Any establishment in which the staff sport t-shirts with the phrase 'If there are no hot dogs in heaven, I'm not going' emblazoned across their backs, is bound to catch my attention. A new addition to the ever growing Corn Exchange, I knew when their official opening day was and decided to sample a Primo's gourmet hot dog for myself. The location of the cafe complements the magnitude and architectural beauty of the Corn Exchange. Situated on the middle floor at ground level, seating spills out onto the balcony area, creating a feel of being openly invited to visit. After experiencing so many poor quality and insipid versions of the hot dog, I was curious to discover what precisely gave their offerings that gourmet status. A friend and I ordered the Classic Chicago (all beef frankfurter with chopped white onions, pickles, tomato wedges, celery salt, ball park mustard and a dill pickle spear) and the Dodge City (bockwurst sausage topped with Primo's chilli, West Virginia coleslaw and Monterey Jack cheese.) What a hot dog-based revelation! The bread was delicious, unrecognisable from the soggy, doughy monstrosities that inferior outlets serve. As the sandwiches were made to order, tailoring the contents to your own individual preference was possible. The ingredients were extremely fresh, full of flavour and contributed to making the best hot dog creation I have ever tasted. The staff were charming and friendly, clearly a little apprehensive with regards to their opening, but I had arrived after giving them only 10 minutes to settle in. The constant flow of customers was proof of how the residents of Leeds have been awaiting their city centre presence. Primo's offers a full menu of substantial salads, sumptuous smoothies and delicious cakes. I can attest to the Pecan Pie being devilishly fantastic. I really enjoyed my first experience of this local business, and am looking forward to devouring my way through the entire menu. The perfect hot dog? You'd be barking if you missed out. read more

If you've not been to the dog pound, where the hell have you been? In the dog house? Even if you're an old dog, you can learn new tricks. Anyway - enough of that nonsense. Primos. You should all know by now that this is the place in Leeds to grab a gourmet hotdog. My personal favourite is the Classic Chicago, only with cheese instead of the hot pickle, since I'm a spice wuss. It's just meltingly delicious and so affordable for a quick lunch. Get some extras and you'll be sorted well into tea time. The temptation of 241 on a Thursday is also an added bonus; those of us more inclined to be piggy can simply gorge two of these delicious meat lengths for the price of one, or those of us more romantic can take a date for a special treat. (Just an idea.) However, I have new information. Not only can you partake of their main fare, and the many quirky oddities on display (such as Fluff and Peanut M&Ms) but you can now also get beer. Winner! Millers, amongst other decent bottles, now stand proud in the fridge of drinkable delights and they're even starting a regular live music evening. Sound awesome? Yes it does. This, though, is not my biggest news. Banana. Latte. It's changed my life. Who knew a wee shot of that magic nectar could make what was once a tasty caffeine fuelled necessity into an elongated pleasurable moment in time? Not me, but I do now. Essentially, I don't even know how it works. Should those two combinations of taste even work? I daren't question it lest it disappear in a puff of wonder. But banana in latte is flippin' awesome. I don't get down to the Corn Exchange very often, but when I do it's highly possible that I try to time it around a mealtime so I can visit Primo's. Consistently good quality food that always feels fresh and full of flavour. Their big broad menu (with a make-your-own combo option) makes choosing what I want a nightmare of delicious indecision but after the initial self-inflicted hold-up, the service is always speedy. You could call it 'fast food', but it feels far from it. The staff are always really pleasant and treat you like a person rather than a 'valued customer' on a conveyor belt and the food feels like it's made from real ingredients. Gourmet service as well as gourmet hot dogs. What more could you want? The next question is can I think up a suitable excuse to visit the Corn Exchange any time soon? read more

Just fallen in love with this place again after more than a little while of being completely apathetic towards it. In truth I think that I was just going in 3 times a week and it became a little boring, but with a little time off it's just as good as I remember it the first few times I went in. The dawgs are great, the onion rings are different, but good, and the chilli fries are astonishingly brilliant! Add to all this the imported American sweets and drinks and Primo's is one of my favourite fast food eating spots in Leeds. And the staff are all ace too. read more

So, another Living Social voucher which my husband purchased as we were very keen to try this new sensation of lunch cuisine. Went on Saturday lunchtime and it was fairly quiet so the order was taken rather swiftly and we took our seats outside to take in the splendour of the Corn Exchange building. My Mr's coffee came quite quickly followed by my smoothie, both were a good standard and my smoothie (promise me pineapple) was packed with fruit. Being honest, I feel a bit disappointed with the actual food! It arrived quite quick and the chips were nice but the actual hot dogs weren't all I thought they would be. I had the Mexicana which I expected to be a taste sensation but the meat wasn't very hot, the salsa on it was sweet and the Jalapenos were a bit slimy and, as a previous Yelper had mentioned- the bread was a bit 'crispy' The Mr had the Dodge City but there was no trace of the chili and the coleslaw was quite tasteless. The deal itself was good but i won't be rushing back as I wasn't blown away by the Hot dogs. Good chips and smoothie though, nice portion size and it's always a pleasure to sit in the Corn Exchange! read more

Rookie mistake, yelpers. Don't ever do what I did and order a freaking seafood salad from a hot dog place. If I wasn't in such a rush (knowing what a slow eater I am), I'd have taken time to peruse the menu and realised that they serve... tofu dogs. When I saw the size of the gherkins and caramelised onions on offer, as well as melted cheese and all sorts of other trimmings, I felt a complete fool. What on earth was I thinking? However, the seafood salad was indeed nice, but I'm glad I ordered onion rings with it too which are very spicy, so beware if you're sensitive to that which makes one's tongue tingly. I also grabbed a slice of pecan pie as I knew I'd get peckish later, and it was absolutely delicious, although I'm haunted by just how extra lovely it would have been had I popped it in the oven when I got home. No time for that, not a bit! So Primo's specialise in the gourmet hot dog, a rare breed and not one I've seen around Manchester. (Mancunians, feel free to prove me wrong.) This means I basically want these chaps to pop along to our fair city too. They're awesome. Fresh buns, great accouterments, a really wide variety of food to choose from and a massive list of unusual coffees too as well as smoothies and shakes. And what's more? They sell Twizzlers! These, and several other great American snack foods. They'd very adorably bundled some of these up to sell as Christmas gifts too, and that's the third thing I'm kicking myself for - not grabbing one. Gourmet hot dogs, you say? I have to admit, it sounds impossible. I have never been a hot dog fan; I think I was scarred early only by the horrifying tubes of plastic the cinemas customarily pass off as sausages. I suspect they are made from the same substance as the nacho 'cheese'. But I digress. After bravely Folding for Japan last Saturday I was led in the direction of Primo's by a less suspicious soul than I. Having browsed the menu, I was tempted by a bagel but thought, no fool! Have a hot dog! I am wary of all the wursts, so I plumped for a Big Easy (Lincolnshire sausage, pine nuts, crispy bacon and blue cheese, which I cowardly-ly swapped for normal cheese). I had hoped to accompany my food with a smoothie, so as to add some fruit/vegetable to the proceedings, but sadly they had run out of the ingredients so I went for an orange jigger, which is a rare treat. I heart. My cheese was melted, my roll was warm and crispy and the sausage clearly freshly done. It filled a substantial hole, and I was so pleased I have returned today for a second go, this time with the boyfriend who enjoyed himself so much that he wanted to get a second hot dog. I did not permit this. On this occasion I was able to have a smoothie and that too is delightful. You can also get some very sugary looking American 'delicacies' here, my favourite being something called 'Fluff' which apparently marshmallow spread. My stomach turns... My only sadness? No diet drinks. I do not like fat Coke as I don't find it thirst quenching, and would have loved a diet cola, but alas, it was not to be. However, I do think that for under four quid (plus it's buy one get one for a pound (just a pound!) on Thursdays) it's a great alternative to a more expensive eatery, with plenty of seats if you are fatigued from shopping (or Folding). The best thing about Primos? The coffee. Their Italian sandwiches and Cubanos also aren't bad, and I'm a big fan of their chips... However, during a day of shopping in town there is not better place to go for a coffee - it's delicious. Located in the Corn Exchange, you can sit in the courtyard looking up at the beautiful ceiling or watching the people go by. It's so much more relaxing then the busy, rushed coffee shops in town... and you can use the bathrooms in the Corn Exchange - another bonus in my opinion. And the owner is always a delight to talk to - he's spent time in the US where most of his recipes have come from (he also sells sweets and food from the US) and he's always quick to make sure you are enjoying your food. I've been putting off writing a review for Primo's pretty much since it first opened. I've been here countless times and have tried most dogs on the menu (except the tofu dog, that's just not my kinda thing). The one complaint I have to put in is that my wife tends to prefer vegetarian options and she finds Primo's nice but a little difficult at times as all the veg options (aside from the tofu dog) are the same flavour profile. They heavily feature feta, which is tasty, but not for every trip. Anyway, obligatory negative aside, onto the many many positives. First of all, the owner has spent some time in Chicago and I've had many great chats with him about my city. You can tell he's spent some time there by his rock solid commitment to brilliant customer service (often wiping tables and speaking to folks personally) and killer dogs. Seriously, this is the first place I've found in the UK that serves quality dogs and, what's more, serves up a Chicago style offering. It's a match made in meat heaven! So let's get down and dirty on the dogs. They're obviously high quality and the proof is in the pudding. You take one bite and you'll be wanting to know where you can buy a pack of them so you can cook them up on your own BBQ, or maybe that's just me? Fortunately, they also offer a "double-down" option for around £1.50 which allows you to add a second delicious dog into the mix, quickly turning a great hot dog into a filling meal. They offer loads of sides (onion rings, disco fries, etc.) but after a few forays into that realm, I tend to stick to the main meat attraction. It's not that the sides are bad, it's just that the dogs are so good I feel guilty for wasting time on anything else. They've got some breakfast options as well that the missus and I are planning to try sometime but, sadly, I can't comment on. There's also some American beer and sodas to try out, if you're into that, though I feel it my civic duty as an American and a beer lover to recommend avoiding miller's to anyone lucky enough to have missed having one yet. It's like stella artois. If you want something that technically classifies as beer it will do the trick but if you're looking for a quality product then go for an Anchor or Brooklyn brew which are also on offer! Bottom line, Primo's is the place to be and if you've not been your life is not yet complete. read more

This is a nice little place. A 'gourmet hotdog' cafe bar that also has a good range in American candy and local ice cream/cakes. While hotdogs have never really been high up on anyone's wish list the range of toppings and types of sausages here really make you give the menu a second glance, there was a few 'ums and errs' at the counter while wondering what the chuff to order, I ended up with something with cheeses and bacon on it which was pretty tasty if a little small. The service is great too, with friendly staff making sure you've got everything you might need, even if you haven't though of it yet! The only complaint is that it can be a little slow, but I guess these sausages don't cook themselves... coffee is only mediocre too. Unless you've got a specific craving for a hot dog I can't imagine you'd want to go here over a good cafe like Mrs Athas or Laynes. read more

I went here in June on my monthly bromance meal with my friend from work, this place is now winning the stakes. On thursdays it does by a hotdog and get another for £1 bargain!! No I havent tried their hot dogs in house yet but I did pop in here and get some pancakes earlier this morning. I couldnt ask for a better fluffy warm fantastic pancake and it was smothered in maple syrup. Prices werent to bac either I think I paid 5.30 for 2 lots of pancakes and there were 5 flapjacks in the take away dish and I was just craving more after I was done. They have many flavours of hotdogs and some take away sandwiches that I fully intend on trying very soon. They also have many many american treats such as peanut butter m and m's which are fantastic. Dixie beer. big red gum, nerds. sugary cereal, and a pick and mix of jelly beans. Overall a good experiance and Im already looking forward to my next visit. read more

Cappuccino and a slice of cake was ok but noughing to write home about had to wait about 5 minutes when no one else was waiting. Based in the corn exchange in Leeds which is a lovely building but the shops are half empty so does noughing to help this place. I visited Primos on a Living Social voucher, which seems to have fast become my way of trying out new places. I love the location. The Corn Exchange is an amazing building and it's the first time I've been back since the refurbishment. Primo's has a small Cafe feel, service was friendly, polite and pretty quick. We ordered 2 of the gourmet hot dogs, 2 fries and 2 smoothies. My hot dog had Chilli, Jack Cheese and Coleslaw. It was delicious, but very messy to eat and I embraced the American way and got it every where. The smoothie was nice, very fresh fruit and not too thick. Fries were a little too crispy for me but my other half loved them and started hoovering up mine. Thursday is a dog for a £1. If you order a hot dog and a drink you get another hot dog for just £1. Would definitely go back, it's a really nice place for a lunch bite, definitely not a date place, don't want your potential next love to see hot dog running down your face. read more

Step into the gorgeous refurbished Corn Exchange and you have the option of a very swanky meal at Antonys, or an excellent hot dog. We are more inclined to cafe's and have enjoyed consistently perfect hot dogs with excellent coffee at Primos. Wonderful combinations of 5 or 6 sausages (inc. bratwurst, beef and chorizo) and all sorts of fillings (cheese, guacamole, salsa and jalapenos). Be warned these are messy hot dogs but superbly delicious. The owners are delightfully attentive and offer some delicious home made ice cream options for afters. I've recently enjoyed rhubarb and custard ice cream there and the apple/raspberry ice cream is superb. read more
