The spacious counter is conveniently located in the center of the store. It's staffed with a plentiful number of knowledgeable employees who are both friendly & helpful. Our quest for the day was for a Norfolk City Permit for my sister's new kayak. Although the Lake Smith/Lake Lawson Natural Area is in & maintained by Virginia Beach, the waterway winding through it is owned by Norfolk & requires a permit. It's far more convenient than applying for one on line & having to wait for the stickers to come. The second purchase was to buy a new CG approved life jacket since my friend in CG reserves told me they were monitoring kayakers after recent accidents. Her previous use of my life jackets from the boat I sold was to use them as back rests. No can do anymore!! They had a supply but none that fit my sister. So we left with only the City of Norfolk boat (kayak) license & sticker. It's a convenient & a valuable resource for us to be able to obtain the permit quickly and close. The same can also be said for fishermen & those who frequent the nearby waterways, inlets & the Chesapeake Bay.

I did not know they have an archery range here!! Otherwise, I might have invested in a compound bow years ago! Check-in was easy. I had to fill out a waiver since it was my first time shooting here at this range. You just go to the kiosks to the far left of the check-in counter. Be sure to have your Driver's license/ID with you because you will need it to type in the number when you check into the kiosk for the waiver. Plus you will need to turn it in at the check-in desk while you're in the range. You must have safety glasses and ear protection before entering the range. If you don't own any you can purchase safety glasses for $4. My brother loaned me his ear protection and he brought his own guns and ammo. You can purchase from a variety of targets that are against the wall to the right of the counters. Just state which number to the staff. They will give you a stapler to attach to the board in the range. Holy cow! Gunfire can get EXTREMELY LOUD and jolting in there depending upon who is firing what in there. Some dude was firing a weapon that felt like it shook the range and jolted my body. My brother told me what it was they were firing but I forgot. Me and this teenager laughed and looked at each other because MY GAWD, the sound and pressure of that weapon felt like a sonic boom. LOL. They have staff inside the range to change out the back boards if needed and to sweep up the shells to prevent tripping as well. Restrooms are available as well with many multiple stalls and were very clean.

This was a first for this sole purpose. Mainly boots, but also packs. They compete with REI no doubt. But they have an edge in my opinion on service. My service with Chase was phenomenal from entering the store to showing me every aspect of technical gear I would need on a two week European hike, or even local in the Appalachian. I walked out knowing much more and still researching. They did not have the specific hard to locate Lowa boots I wanted to try on. They are rarely retail, closest is NC. No purchases yet, but soon.

We laugh, challenge each other, and somehow sneak in a pretty serious upper-body and core workout while we're having fun. Customer support if you are shipping is hit or miss, we ordered online and went to pick up only to find it was canceled. They had a similar backpack there and we ended up just getting that one. I also really appreciate the special sports camps they host. We recently participated in one with Coach Dupe from Play Your Position, and that experience actually led us to enroll my son in the program. He's now thriving there, which makes the connection even more meaningful. A big thank-you to Dick's House of Sport for not only offering great athletic gear, but also giving local families a chance to discover some of the awesome sports programs available right here in Virginia Beach.

However, this is more than a retail store! It offers merchandise for every sport, and there was an exercise class in session, along with several sets of parents watching their children climb the rock wall that's conveniently situated in the center of the building. Wow! My first thought was, I need to tell my niece about this rock wall opportunity for her adventurous kids! There's a cost for the climb, but a quick glance at the pricing seemed reasonable. Here's a fun place to shop and spend time exploring for the whole family. The staff was very friendly in directing us and our cashier, Curtis was helpful, too. I bought a pair of sunglasses that I still have to this day. I miss the location in VB Town Center. It was one of the best, especially when it had the Rockwall. An employee named Darren ran the Rockwall almost 20 years ago and he works at the Lynnhaven Dicks store in the shoe department. My daughter needed new shoes for a camping trip and Darren, as usual was awesome! Lots of great knowledge and advice and patience. She found some New Balance that was perfect and the right price. Darren's customer service skills are unmatched and I'm so glad that he was there to help us. The chain carries a lot of name brands like Adidas, Nike and Hoka's. The overall store in my opinion has not been as strong, but the selection has been every bit as good. They like others have cut back on staff and it can be challenging to get help when shopping. Customer service is not nearly what it used to be. When checking out the cashier was downright not friendly. So this four-star is much more about a single experience with Darren than the overall store experience through the years. If you need some shoes, ask for Darren.
