And my hair grows amazing and stays healthy while going to this salon. I highly recommend for naturalistas! Call ahead to make an appointment and arrive early. I dont get all the positive reviews. The mom and daughter who own this place are wonderful......until......or if their is a problem. Long story short I had really long relaxed hair. I wanted a break from taking care of it (washing it every 3 days) so I got a weave. I did moisturize and wash my hair every seven days with the weave. I had it taken out at the same salon after a month. When the woman took it out ( different girl) I had about 25% of my hair left. Went from mid back to shoulder. I had a panic attack in the bathroom. I sat back in the chair and started to, borderline cry. The owner and her daughter came over. I said look at my hair, do you know what it looked like before? The daughter replied, yup. I told them of the hard work and years I put in to growing my hair. While I was talking I used the word damn. And the mother got in my face and was like, "Dont you curse at me." And the daughter was like, "Dont you know what happens after you get a weave?" I just picked up my stuff and left. I went here a few times before without incident. I guess it just depends on what beauty treatment your getting and your standards. All I know is, i won't ever go back and they're glad i didn't sue them, AND that I'm a Christian, because when the owner (who is a pastor) stepped in my face, it was too much, like a scene from Love and Hip Hop. She should've just apologized and tried to make it right, instead she got aggressive and said I cursed at her because I used the word damn? They should have their license REVOKED. Never trust people who have weaves, and Bad Weaves at that, to take care of your hair. Fyi I went natural shortly after. First experience (June20th $75 plus $15 tip) was good, my daughter gets her natural hair twisted . Second visit (June 27th $85 plus $15 tip) I come back for myself get a "silk press" it puffs that same night , ok whatever they took me in kinda last minute and I'm natural so kind of expected. Third visit (July5th $165 plus $10 tip) I get lemonade braids, she does not wash or blow my hair, (she knows I got it washed the week before, I really didn't wanna wash my moisture out anyway, but could still conflict with the braid quality by already having product in my hair, but whatever it's a "professional" salon who knows what's best). Takes about five hours for medium size feed-ins. As I'm leaving the stylists asked if I wanted a towel because the hair was still dripping wet, I didn't have time to sit under the dryer, I had another appointment, but not before another stylist objects "we can't give out towels" in my head I've spent almost $400 in 3 weeks and your complaining about a 50 cent towel? But w/e irritated and ready to go at this point I paid and left. My sister notices my braids are not flat, my hair is not tucked properly in the braid, and the braids are not uniformed in size. 4th and absolute last visit today July 9th $89 (not sure if tipped her dad paid) granted my daughter was out of town (without me to maintain), she swam a few days, took her twist out on her own, so her hair was very dry and tangled of which I warned, asked for simple cornrows, and ok'd 6 braids but these 6 braids were horrible looked like a 12 year old did them. Moral of my long story is don't charge people celebrity prices for amateur work. This is unexceptable and needs to stop! Salons and stylist need to be held accountable! No more hush hush support local businesses bull crap! I'm tired of "stylists" saying they can meet expectations and do not follow through! I'm tired of paying for crappy work and or sitting in someone's salon/chair for unnecessary hours at a time! Have to do better! read more

For a few weeks I've been calling trying to schedule an appointment for a simple wash and set. Every call has either been completely ignored or sent to voicemail. Even after leaving several messages I gave up. Decided to call another salon and ended up getting my service done that same day. Princess Palace is very unprofessional. I love this place, the ambiance, the workers, and the result. They will get 5 stars if the wait wasn't so long, but have to admit it's usually worth it. Aside from the wait and lack of central air, I really have no other complaints. The results are addicting, I usually go every week when I'm wearing it my hair short, and once it grows out (they specialize in hair care), I usually go every two weeks. The prices are like any other black hair salon, but you do get your conditioner free if you go every week and on your 1st visit. Sam is my stylist and she is the best in the city to me. I'm not even exaggerating when I say people are always complementing me on my hair to the point where it gets tiring (sike! I love it). Although it's a black hair salon, she has clients from all races and ethnicities . I highly recommend her for cuts, better and cheaper than any Newbury St. stylist. SOOO I've been going to Princess Hair Palace since my junior year in high school. 2002. Samantha is the absolute BEST IN THE BIZ. She and I are former Westie alumni so I love her even more!! But honestly Samantha is a force to be heard. Everyone there is TALENTED and I love the fact that Princess will not let you leave unless you are 100% satisfied. I have never been dissatisfied leaving this salon as you can see I've been loyal to them and they me for 11 years!!!! They are expensive but you have to pay to play and believe me with them your in the big leagues! I would definitely like if I could be seen at the exact time of my appointment but honestly I wait anyway because I won't go anywhere else. Here hair is their passion. For first timers they conduct a consulation just like the doctors office. They make it so you completely understand your hair and they explain the best way to get it its best. Because I don't really like reading endless paragraphs of prose (apologies, reviewers), I'm going to try to capture the awesomeness of this place in easier-to-digest bullet format. Here goes: -As a first-time customer, I appreciated the ease with which the receptionist fit me in for a busy Saturday. -The convenience of this place can't be denied. Just a short walk from the Ashmont T station. It's even on the same side of the street! -You walk into a clean, friendly, peaceful oasis. You're greeted with a smile and you realize that the hum across the shop is that of music that lifts your spirits and the occasional laughter of the stylists and customers. There is no loud, obnoxious yelling across the customers' heads here. -Crystal, my stylist, came over to introduce herself and to touch my hair so she could get a sense of what it needed. She then gave the assistant instructions on what to do in order to give my bushy, thick and incredibly parched afro the care it needed. -The assistant, God forgive me for not catching her name, had no problem asking other stylists for advice regarding what to do next. She told me she had just started in August and was still learning a lot. From the looks of things, she's well on her way to being a fantastic stylist. -My hair is fly! Here I am three days later with incredible body and shine and every intention of telling everyone I know about Princess. Crystal worked with my hair and gently coaxed it into submission. Even though I asked for it to be straightened, she did not force it to be straightened, but was incredibly gentle with my hair and gave me advice on how to take care of it at home. P.S: It must be noted that they do everything here- hair, facials, manicures, pedicures, eyelashes. But trust- it's not a jack of all trades kind of place. I can't stand those places that boast a smorgasboard of services but do a bootleg job on them all. I've been coming to this Salon for the last few years since my stylist Tristina has made this her home! The shop is very clean, spacious and for the most part everyone's customer service is great. I can't speak for the other stylist quality of work because only Tristina does my hair! (As she has for the last 10 years) Tristina has growing hands and really prides herself in hair care! I am a person who loves to try new styles; hair cuts, full sew-ins, quick weaves, bleaches you name it I've had it! Through it all my hair has never become damaged or broken off! Tristina stays on top of my hair to make sure I receive the proper trims and treatments when needed. Been coming here since June of 2011, and each time I come and receive the treatment I pay for. I'm still continually greeted with smiles from the employees and patrons waiting on services. I've been to more than my fair share of salons (ghetto to the ultra chic) and this salon falls right in the spot of the upper salons. Every technician knows what they are doing and if you listen and pay attention they tell you eaxctly what you need to know about your hair. I have never left disappointed with my color or my style. I had my hair done here for my rehearsal dinner last year. I have natural hair and haven't been to a salon for a couple years, but making the appointment and the whole process of having my hair straightened, trimmed, and styled here was just fantastic. My appointment was at about 11 on a Friday mining and my stylist (Crystal, I think) managed time well. The salon had a steady stream of clients but everyone was taken care of well and the salon had a positive and upbeat atmosphere. I would definitely come back to Princess Hair Palace when I'm in need of beautification. The prices were reasonable as well. read more

I went to Princess Hair Salon after seeing how many great reviews it had on Yelp. I've had a salon I loved back at home but I haven't found a new one I really liked since I moved out to Boston so I decided to give this place a try. The first time I went was a few months ago for a touch up relaxer & roller set. I went in on a busy friday with an appt. and was there about 5 hours. It was an okay experience, cost around a $100, no one particularly stood out to me for giving great customer service... basically nothing to write home about. My second experience however was the one worth sharing. If you don't feel like reading ahead here's the short version: THIS PLACE IS AWFUL. I called and made an appt. for later this week but after finishing work early I called back to see if they had any spots for that evening, they said "Sure, come right in." I said I'd be there at 5pm and they said I was all set. I showed up a little after 5pm and signed in and told the receptionist my name and the time of my appointment to which I received a blank stare. So I sit down in the waiting area, which was pretty empty seeing it was a Monday evening, and an hour passes by. Sam, who I was scheduled with, didn't seem even close to being finished with her clients so I checked in at the front desk where two girls were. I asked who I was seeing and when i'd be taken - One girl seems confused and asked who I am and if I have an appt. The other girl (who I assume is the actual receptionist) tells her my name and confirms I'm seeing Sam. They tell me they don't know when she'll be done but they can start basing me now. So they base me and five min. later I'm back in the waiting area. ANOTHER HOUR GOES BY... I walk to the desk and ask them what's up. This time Sam pipes up and says that Princess will be taking care of me which I believe is her mom. She should be done in 5 min. Another 30 MINUTES go by. Princess finishes her client, talks to her friends, sits down and checks her Facebook on her iPad for awhile till she finally waltzes over to start my relaxer. I ask her does she keep all her clients waiting TWO AND A HALF HOURS before starting them to which she starts apologizing over and over. You know what's the worst? When all you want is an apology and all you get is excuses. For the next 15 minutes I had to listen to her say "I'm sorry BUT I've had a bad day, i'm sorry BUT no one told me I was working on you, I'm sorry BUT its the girl at the desk's fault, i'm sorry BUT i'm going through some family problems and there's a lot of Facebook drama. Really? Facebook drama? More bullsh*t, more excuses. It was everyone else's fault but the owner's. Another girl rinsed me out, shampooed and conditioned me and I didn't deal with Princess again. So since I've already been at the salon forever I decided to forgo the roller set/ blow-dry or style. I figured they wasted enough of my time. I left with wet hair, got my things and stopped by the desk before I left. You'd think that with an unhappy customer the manager would step in to take care of them when they checked out (especially when it was their mistake) but NO, her daughter rang me out and when I asked Princess who sitting in the other room chit chatting with a friend to ring me out she gave me a confused look and said someone else would do it. So last time I payed $95 for the FULL service. This time they decided to be generous and charge me $45. When I said that was pretty steep for the service I received they said it was half of what I paid last time. Duh! What they're forgetting is that I got a FULL service last time and this time they only did HALF of what I asked and they made me wait 2.5 hours for them to do it. Again, bullsh*t. What an awful experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. This place is outdated, messy, expensive, the staff is incompetent and most of all its a HUGE waste of your time. The hair they do is GREAT. The problem isn't the hair.... its whether or not they can get to you on time. I USED to go to them, not often (cause my schedule barely permitted me to get time off). But whenever I would go get my hair done, they did a great job. Yes, they do have healing hands. I've get my weaves done by them and ONLY them. But the problem is they DON'T stick to your appointment times. Straw that broke the camels back: I remember having an appointment for a 4pm corporate even on a Saturday. I got to them at 830am. Shop wasn't even open yet. Samantha was my stylist and I was the only one there. My appointment was for 9am. I got settled in and waited... and waited. Other customers came in and waited right along side me. I finally got up and asked if I was going to be seen? They had put other people to wash when the other employees came and I was still in my pony tail holder. I hadn't even got a relaxer started and I was first in line. I started researching other hair salons on my phone because it was 1045 and no one had even put me on the chair. Princess showed up at NOON (thank God) and finally things began to move. Just as I had gotten another salon on the phone... is when they finally decided I was worth the wait to get my hair done. I left the salon at 2pm.... I spent a work day at that salon. I was going to get a weave from them in 2014...but now they have a $50 sitting fee.... because a lot of people didn't show up for their appointments. WHATS THE POINT if your stylist doesn't show up on time even if they do, they don't take you at the time scheduled. They do good work, but they take their sweet jesus time getting to said work. I come here for brows and Kimesha is ahh-mazing! Due to a freak accident at age two, my brows are "special." Kimesha always tames them - whether I'm in the mood for thick or thin...and she keeps my high arch in tact. It's easy-peasy to make an appointment, and when I've walked in the wait hasn't been too bad. Labor Day weekend 2013 my daughter had a hair crisis just days before the start of her senior year of high school just days away. She used an excess amount of Wen products which caused her hair to 'lock' and in a panic she cut it all off. We walked into the Palace, on a Saturday, and my girl experienced the 'Princess' effect! I have incredibly curly hair, and for special occasions I like to straighten it. I got my hair straightened here for New Year's, and while the product was great, they didn't do enough to protect my curls from the heat. After a few washes and deep conditioning, my curls will not return to normal! Heat damage on hair is irreversible, and I had hoped getting it done by professionals would prevent that from happening. Clearly the salon used heat that was way too high to rush to straighten it, and now I'm dealing with the long-term repercussions. Cannot recommend this place. read more

These women know how to handle and cut hair. I have never found another salon that did my hair to perfection like Sam did. I suppose that's why I tipped so generously and put up with so much disrespect of my time for so long. First, let me qualify what I am about to write by emphasizing that I went to Princess regularly (once-every two weeks) for MONTHS. I arrived on time for my appointments, and always tipped at least 20% on top of their already too high charges. - Time: even if I arrive early for an appointment (and I usually made them for ~8 AM), I spent no less than 8 hrs there. Approx. 6 hours waiting time (before and during service) and 2 hrs of actual service. This is absolutely unacceptable. Despite any appointment I make, I saw several later arrived patrons come and leave before me. And this is even though I usually just went for a touch up or wash and set. It's pretty insulting to see other people come in and get the same service you've been waiting 2 hours for. Once, I only got service after being there 6 hours and politely announcing that I was leaving to flat iron my own hair at home. - Pricing: I am willing to spend money on my hair so that it's healthy and looks professional- not a cheapskin at all. The last time I went to Princess for a touch up, I paid over $100. For someone to slap some relaxer on my roots. No additional service. That's ridiculous, even by Boston standards. I am not sure if that was an error, but I was in such a haste to leave (because I had been there for 9 hours) that I did think about what I actually paid until later. - Product pushing: Admittedly, I was so desperate for healthy hair that I may have been a little gullible. They took full advantage of this an pushed extra/unnecessary products and services on me until I learnt to say no. My last experience (the final straw) went something like this: - paid over $100 for a touch up - got ridiculously burned (as in bald spot in the front of my head) because the stylist disregarded my request to be washed out when the pain got to be too much - told to come back in a week to wash out the burn - thought they would offer the wash for free (since it was their error), but being told that I would get it at the DISCOUNTED price of $30 - paid over $100 for a touch up (needs mentioning twice). Yea, so after that burnt scalp, over $1,000, and many hours of wasted time, I decided to find other salons in Boston. I meant to write this review a while ago. I want to start by saying the people here are extremely nice and the customer service is wonderful. However, I do wish I had picked Princess or Samantha to do my hair. My hair dresser was Tristina and while she is very nice and seemed to know what she was doing she damaged my hair I first went to her I told her my hair was completely natural no perms or anything and to prove it I showed her pictures where I cut off my hair three times extremely short. The first two times she did my hair it was amazing. About the 3rd time she told me I needed a conditioner. I told her to be very careful because my hair holds moisture bad and that conditioning sometimes hurts my hair if it is not the right one. After about the second time using the conditioner my hair came out very flat and oily. So she decided to use a clarifying and stripping shampoo and conditioner. My ends looked very dead. She told me they should be okay after a few more washes. Mind you I was coming to her every two weeks. Well, my hair still did not improve so I asked for a sew in weave. She agreed. I did not realize until she was doing my hair that she was not experienced in weave. When the owner tried to help her out she would caught an attitude. She recommended that I dye my hair to be the same color as the weave. Well now I know that does not work because the whole time I had the weave my red was clearly still there, and I paid for the color change smh. Needless to say it looked nice only a week later I had to call her and tell her I could see my braids. So then she asked me to come back in. While I was grateful she could fix it I was irritated that I had to come in because it was a big inconvenience. I kept the weave in for a couple of months. I came back to have the hair removed and my hair straightened again. This time my hair looked horrible. For some reason Tristina said yes your ends are very bad. I told her I was not happy and she said she would work on my ends. However, she was upset with the owner that night and burned my scalp several times. I received a text from her saying she will be at the salon and I could come back another day. I let her know my hair looked horrible and completely breaking off. She then said well don't you have a perm. I text her back and said you have been my hair dresser for the past five months and you are asking me if I have a perm. Isn't your hair dresser suppose to know if you have a perm or not when I clearly told her I did not and that my hair was completely natural. After that I said it was enough and that I did not care to return. I went home to my long time hair dresser and she stated the color damaged my hair greatly and it seemed as if Tristina was using conditioner for relaxed hair. I had to cut all my dead ends off and being that my hair was way passed my shoulders I was highly upset. While I am upset about leaving because I cannot find a better hair salon for natural hair, I do recommended going to Princess or Samantha. . read more

Where should I begin? I came to princess hair palace after my old stylist ( who shall remain nameless) seriously over processed my hair. Sam helped me grow out the awful Rihanna bob my old stylist gave me. I've been going here for four years now. And my hair is past my shoulders. I've done full weaves, pieces, a wedding do and a natural blow out. They do it all. Thank goodness it's not ghetto like other Boston or Dorchester salons. I love the new location as well. Princess always knows when your having a bad day. She lends a helping voice! Thanks Princess! There can be a wait at times but you have to understand the multitude of weaves these two do. If you're looking for your time to be wasted, this place fits the bill. I came here twice out of desperation and will never look back. The staff is friendly but that's about it. I'm not sure why it's called a hair palace when you go inside and see dinginess and disorder. My hair came out OK if I'm being fair, however definitely not lightweight. And it's as if there was too much hair spray in my hair because it was very stiff and crunchy upon unwrapping! I just didn't not like the services provided overall and I do not recommend this place. (I totally meant to review months ago when I visited, oops!) The customer service and ambiance this place offers is 5 star worthy. I was a little disappointed that while I was told one price over the phone I was charged slightly more at the register. It wasn't a significant difference (between a $5 and $10), but it's the principle. I don't believe it was done intentionally or in mean spirit, but it is a pet peeve of mine and something that seems to be too common in servicing industry atmospheres which I do understand happens because there is no definitive price tag. My stylist, Tristin, was amazing!! For reference, I am transitioning and had been post relaxer for about five months at the time of my visit. They were aware as they ask for that information at the time of booking, and so they arranged for me to have a stylist that was familiar with transitioning-natural texture which I really appreciated. I went for an 11am appointment and was seen within minutes of that time (thank goodness!). Just before the wash began, I was asked to fill out a "client profile" sheet which I absolutely loved; the sheet asks that you list products you're currently using and allergies- great safety practice, all salons SHOULD totally be doing this! Although her hair was straightened, the stylist was natural herself which gave me added confidence that I was going to be in good hands. I was in there for a total of about 2.5 hours which is great considering I got a wash, deep condition, blow dry, flat iron and trim. As someone who hasn't had kinky hair since elementary school, I was preparing for the worst, but was genuinely sooo pleased with the result. I don't frequent any salon, but whenever I do decide to pamper myself, I want to call this one home. The hours aren't great so that's difficult to do, but totally worth it if your schedule doesn't conflict. PS, there's a great little shop next door. I am so happy I found this place! I have natural hair and I love it, but I hate doing anything with it because it takes too long to get it under control. This is why I'm happy that I have Princess Hair Palace and my stylist, Admire, to do my hair for me. I always leave happy, with soft, healthy, manageable hair. Admire is a sweetheart who takes the time my hair needs to get shiny and healthy. She has more patience than I had! She's thorough, and gentle with my hair and it hasn't looked this good in years! When it comes to Service they are slow as molasses!!!!! They are great with hair care but they need to be more considerate of people's time. B/C of this I have scaled back on my visits to this salon. I only go for major services I cannot do on my own. Ladies you have got to do better! Time management is key! Stop overbooking! Also, for time lost, a discount would be nice. This place is ok. I decided to pay a visit because the salon I regularly go to is in Cambridge (I live on the South Shore), and I wanted some place closer (30 minutes away). So I chose Princess, and was not pleased with the experience. It took 3 hours to get my hair done (wash, set, and trim). I changed my mind about getting a roller set because that would have made it 4 hours total, and settled for curls because I could not bear it anymore. It took 50 minutes before they started on my hair, which was a waste of my time! I was ready to bolt out the door. The smiles and decor did not sway me. I've been to a number of salons full of smiles and nice decor :) If you don't mind spending 3-4 hours at a hair salon, then it should be fine. But as for me, never again. I had a 2pm appointment today for a full weave installment. I arrived at 2:10pm but wasn't seen until 4:36pm ( 2 1/2hr wait) not once did they come and apologize for the long wait. I understand things happen I'm also in the business of servicing so I get it. But a 2 1/2hr wait is unacceptable. So they began to wash me to them tell me the stylist is sick and she can not do my weave installment. Now I'm unable to get me hair done and I'm going out of town tomorrow. I'm so upset I cried. I will not be returning back here. My time is precious. read more

The good-They accept cards The bad-service took forever! The salon assistatn did most of the work. The daughter samatha took forever to do my hair because she was deciding what to have for lunch. My hair looked mediocre @ best. I got two tracks put in which fell out about a week and a half after i got my hair done...and i got them sewed in!! I had to sew them in myself. they have been loose since. I have never gotten such horrible work done. I will never go back again. read more

Had a facial and waxing from Kemesha and loved it! She is very professional and offered excellent advice on how to keep my skin moisturized and recommended some quick and easy beauty routines. The place is clean and welcoming in a very central location. The staff is helpful and always quick to smile. It's a gem of a place and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a one-stop shop for hair, nails, and spa services. read more

I have been going to Princess for years. While they do an excellent job on your hair you must be prepared to wait for 2 hours before someone services you. The customer service leaves little to be desired. In addition, they are now requiring you to give them your credit card information over the phone in order to book an appointment. Their systems aren't secure and they don't tell you where they are writing your credit card information down at. Talk about a great way to get your identity stolen. While the overall weaves they provide are great their service SUCKS! read more

I don't know where to begin with place but if you want a weave done, read this first and save yourself! I called 2 weeks in advance after reading great reviews about Princess. Told receptionist I wanted a full head weave with precision cut and I wanted the first appointment in the morning. Friday 9:00 was given and I was there on time. Sat down for 20 minutes and then was greeted by Princess who sat and asked what style I wanted. I showed her a picture and she said no problem, she loves doing weaves and has been cutting hair for over 20 years. Then she sighs and starts telling me about her church and street ministry for another 20 minutes in the waiting area. OK, great. I'll listen but can you start my hair at least because there is no one else here at this time. She finishes her story and says she'll be right with me. And shuffles around the Salon doing nothing. 11/2 hours later, I get washed by shampoo girl. Half hour after that, Princess daughter braids me up and I go back to waiting area. Princess, doing nothing else. Asks her daughter to play the song she likes. I then sit and listen to Break Every Chain for at least 30 times in a row. .SERIOUSLY. I liked the song before entering the salon but hated it when I left. I'll cut to the most important part, when she Finally did my weave, yes, the cut was on point. She hooked it up and I left at 5pm. 8 HOURS that could of been reduced if she cared about her clients time but trust me, she does not. When I took this weave out a couple of months later, I was shocked. 20 years doing hair but she had the thread intricately wrapped around a few strands of My hair!?!? Yes..it was sewn into the braid for the most part. But right in the front this idiot found a way to split the braid and literally wrap and twist this thread ALL THE WAY DOWN MY LONG NATURAL HAIR. The only way to get it out was to cut it out. I have never, ever in all my years of weave, seen anything like that. Paid her $220 for that. Do not go here, Save yourself and your hair! read more
