I made an appointment with Kathy on a previous day, confirmed it, then showed up at the time. She was busy with three separate clients and I ended up being led to have my hair cut by someone else. Don't know his name, but he proceeded to perform a series of baffling actions such as giving me a bowl cut and then spending half an hour cosmetically trimming about a third of an inch of hair from random locations. I've had better haircuts from COVID era garages. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Kathy is a nice lady who knows her stuff, but I'm never going back again. I ended up doing walk in instead, and she wasn't in the salon for 20+ minutes while I waited, and the other employee who was manning the shop also left me in the hair washing chair mid-wash. When she finally came in, she was complaining about customers at her nail salon. Then the boss tried to charge me $87 (the price hidden on the wall, which I didn't see and no one told me) for my haircut and claimed the prices online are inaccurate. It's hard to find a hair salon that's mastered men's hair, unless you pay through the nose. Zoe and friends will give you a haircut to match any hair studio in the world (speaking from some experience!), and at a remarkably good price. For my money, this is the best salon in Boston, and Zoe, and her cozy shop, are sweet as can be. Not to mention, you get a *proper* scalp massage with your shampoo!!! read more

Scheduled an appointment with Kathy because of the reviews on Yelp, but I left the appointment with mixed--mostly negative--feelings about my hair. When I booked the appointment online, I asked for partial highlights and slight thinning for medium length hair (I have pretty thick/heavy hair). Everything went fine at first, but things started getting worse after the highlights. She told me that because I had previously box dyed my hair black, my highlights came out orange instead of blonde. Granted, I should've told her that before I came to the hair salon, but it was fixable and I take full accountability for these results. She started panicking, and as a client, this is not a good look for her professionalism. At this point, she was also trying to take care of a walk-in client and directed all her attention to this individual. I understand that Kathy is busy trying to run the studio based on appointments and a walk-in policy, but what confused me is that she had TWO OTHER workers doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING or doing the bare minimum amount of work. If they were not sweeping the floor, washing hair, or attempting to blow dry my hair, they were standing around and watching Kathy do her job. They would do a men's haircut once in a while, but other than that, they were getting paid to watch Kathy do her job. I felt as though my hair was put in incapable hands and immediately knew I would walk out of the studio needing to get my hair fixed elsewhere. And it only got worse from here. After Kathy dyed my hair to a lighter brown, the other two workers attempted to blow dry my hair, but it was going absolutely nowhere. Kathy stepped in to do it but the resulting haircut was absolutely ridiculous. In an attempt to thin my hair, she chopped up random pieces of my hair from the top of my head. It's been about a month and these strands of hair just stick straight out and look awful. I have no clue how to style this ugly haircut. I feel absolutely let down; this is not what I was expecting despite the positive reviews for Zoe Hair Studio. At the end of this appointment, I think Kathy was trying to convince HERSELF that she had saved my hair. She cut my bangs extra short and thinned out random pieces of hair at the top of my head. I take the blame for the botched highlights because I should've let her know about my hair condition in advance, but that doesn't excuse the haircut or the lack of expertise from her coworkers. She charged me around $400 for this disappointing hair treatment. I find it hard to look in the mirror at my own reflection these days. I will DEFINITELY not come back and I recommend being careful about when and who you make your appointment when you come to Zoe Hair Studio. read more

I have never left a bad review before but this place deserves it. THIS PLACE IS SCAMMING PEOPLE! $875 for what this woman did to me is robbery. She charged me double for her mistake after telling me she could fix it! I went in and asked for "full blonde". I got Kathy and she said she could do it but once she started on the back, I noticed it looked like she was doing highlights so I stopped her and confirmed that I wanted fully blonde and she said yes full blonde. So I continued. When she got around to the side I could see that she was in fact doing highlights so I stopped her again and grabbed the pieces she didn't dye and explained that I wanted it all to be blonde. She said don't worry it will be mostly blonde and it will look good. I reluctantly let her finish because the foils in the back had been sitting for a while now. After it was washed I explained that I didn't like it because it was not what I wanted or what I had asked for and tried multiple times to explain that to her while she was doing it. She said don't worry I can fix it. Her first attempt at fixing it was putting peroxide in my hair with the toner which turned all the blonde white and the brown orange and it was burning my scalp pretty painfully. She said the burning was normal. At this point I was almost in tears and she was trying to convince me it looked good. But I was even more unhappy this time around so again she said she could fix it. I trusted her because she is supposedly a professional. She went back through and bleached the parts she had skipped the first time. After the wash, my hair was in pretty bad shape and I was literally pulling chunks from the bottom of it because it was fried. I'm lucky I have thick hair and only some fell out instead of all of it. Then after all of this chaos, Kathy proceeded to charge me for TWO DYES, plus the cut and thick hair fee. Even though she would not have had to do anything extra if she had just listened to what I had asked for in the first place or stopped the first time I tried to stop her. She charged me $875. I have never not paid for a service and I didn't know what to do because she would not budge on the price so I felt forced to pay it. Everyone I have talked to said I should have called the police because they would have laughed in her face trying to charge me that. I didn't know that was an option at the time unfortunately or I would have done so. I cried in my car for over an hour after I left because I was so unhappy with my hair and on top of it I was robbed of almost two weeks pay for it. It's so uneven all throughout and is like 3 different colors when I just wanted a single color. Also she didn't even dye my roots so it already looks grown out even though it just got done last weekend on 6/10. read more

Eeek never again. Kim cut my hair and it did not turn out well; I asked for long layers even showing an inspiration photo and ended up leaving with a choppy uneven haircut. I was charged $77 for my mid length hair (I guess cause my hair is thick?). She rapidly blew dry and curled my hair to cover up how uneven the hair was. She uses this knife that I've never seen before, where it cuts, thins, and creates a lot of texture at the same time, though it does tug at your scalp quite a bit. But damn if she isn't efficient. I was in and out within 20 minutes, and while not the best haircut I've ever had, it was good. However, for a mens haircut, 50 dollars plus tip is pretty outrageous. Came in for a trim and had one of the worst haircuts ever. She spent less than 10 minutes on the cut. I asked for layers and she did not even cut my hair in sections - she basically took all of my hair and cut it straight across. When she was finished, I had to ask to see the back of my hair. Kathy is a hardworking lady. I was pleased with the service. She appears to be a superwoman who loves her work. The haircut place is constantly busy with customers wandering in, but I think she should limit it to appointments only since she does the majority of the work. Kathy is the best!! I have mixed-race hair that tricks people with how thick it is and have spent many agonizingly long hours in Salons for haircuts that took 2+ hours from wash to blow dry. Not only is Kathy is a master of her craft but she is FAST!!! I got my second haircut with her after I came in with a Groupon and she fixed my previous "haircut" when I had attempted to trim my bangs myself. The cut grew out really well (looked great straight and wavy) and so I decided to go back. Both times I was in and out within half an hour (wash, cut, and blowdry!), I really appreciate this respect for my time. She is sweet, easy to chat with, and really listens to what you want. She even remembered me from my previous haircut a few months prior. You know a stylist is skilled when most of the haircut is done dry. It's a tiny little shop right on the ground floor in the middle of Chinatown, not where I would expect to see a salon, but perfectly placed. I called for a last minute appointment to see if I could fit in a haircut before starting school and Kathy told me to come on over! I showed up and was welcomed to a small clean studio in Chinatown. I did not wait long for someone to come out and ask me to sit down and start shampooing my hair which was an amazing scalp massage. After the shampoo Kathy asked what I was looking for and knew that I was trying to keep my hair long, so when she began cutting she would ask me repeatedly if the length she was cutting off was okay, which was very reassuring. She was very quick and efficient with her scissoring and with the help of another stylist blow dried my hair, styled it and walked out in less than an hour! If I could give her a zero I would. Kathy was the person we usually go to for a hair cut since we are not from the area. My sisters and I scheduled an appointment and as soon as we walked in, she stopped us and said that since we inquire about the price last time, she wanted to let us know that her price increases. It's fine that she let us know that but the way she came out was rude and belittling. She did it in front of all the other customers which was inappropriate and unprofessional. She could have mentioned it when my sister made the appointment either via text or phone. She said that due to tariff (what does that got to do with cutting hair?) and inflation, she's charging $85 for long hair and $75 for medium. Granted that we usually get is just a trim and she usually cut it in 10-15 minutes each. We traveled an hour for a haircut so we would have paid for it. But it's her demeanor and tone that turns us off. She even commented that it's the same as us paying for a $15 bubbletea (I was holding one in my hand).
