I saw Erika when I was trying to get pregnant with my 3rd child and was in my late 30s this go around. Let me begin by saying I was a little wary of having someone poke me with needles (regardless that 50% of my body is tattooed) but I was experiencing lightning like, burning pain from two impinged nerves. One in my lower leg and the other near my elbow on my forearm. I have been to neurologists, physical therapists and even chiropractors, nothing worked and I didn't want to become dependant on pills. A friend suggested I try acupuncture and said I should see Erika. I thought there was nothing to lose so I scheduled an appointment. She was very professional, asked me questions about my pain and health history, my lifestyle, diet and sleeping habits. She probed the areas of my discomfort with her fingers then told me how she was going to proceed. I cringed as the first needle went in but it was painless! A little tiny barely noticeable prick and then nothing. One or two of the needles made my muscles twitch but it was gone instantly. All the while she asked after my comfort and wanted to know if I needed anything adjusted. To be honest I fell asleep for a good half hour! When the session was over she explained that I may feel some residual tightness in the areas for a day and she spent some time actually bothering to educate me, she told me that my ulnar (?) Nerve was being pressed down on in the space between my arm bones near my elbow and that's why I felt pain. She mentioned things about my leg but I can't recall them now. I started working with Erika about 5 months ago to help alleviate the chronic pain I was feeling in my lower back due to a herniated disc. I was already seeing a chiropractor and Pilates trainer to help rehab my injury, but when I was still feeling acute pain in my lower back as well as compensatory tightness and stiffness in other areas of my body, they each recommended that I add acupuncture to my treatment plan. Erika is an extremely kind and caring practitioner who really takes the time to get to know her patients and their bodies. Each one of our sessions starts out with a conversation about how I'm feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally. She asks which parts of my body feel good or don't feel good, asks me to describe where I'm experiencing any pain, stiffness, tightness, compression, or sensitivity, and also asks about other areas of my life like how I'm sleeping and how's my energy level. After this initial check in Erika then takes a "reading" of my body before she starts any needling--she takes my pulse, listens to my breathing, and feels around to identify areas of tightness. With all of that information she then creates a specialized acupuncture session tailored to my specific needs and injury. Depending on the day and how my body is doing, Erika uses a variety of Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities--traditional acupuncture needling, cupping, moxibustion heat therapy, and/or electric stimulation. Her touch is very gentle and precise and she checks in with me multiple times throughout the treatment to make sure that everything feels okay. I feel so comfortable and safe when I'm on her table! Sometimes I drift off into a light sleep and other times I'm consciously focusing on sending breath and healing thoughts to my lower back. Either way, after only 30 minutes of "rest" I feel more relaxed and my body feels more open and free than after a 2-hour massage! My boyfriend and I both went to see Erika...for totally different things. He is recovering from knee surgery and was in a lot of pain. I was having neck tension from stress primarily. He felt so good and energized afterwards as opposed to the pain and tired he felt coming in. He thought it was really awesome. My experience with Prinz Acupuncture could not have been better. I had gotten into a bicycle accident earlier this Summer and I was recovering slowly.
