Guy illustrated his talk with a variety of visuals including the people, the designs, the styles and maps. It was easy to make connections. He gave us a history of the people who occupied the French Quarter over time, the fires and flooding that jeopardized or didn't jeopardize this area and most importantly who saved it from demolition. If you come in the summer, beware of the heat and lack of shade (which is how every cemetary tour is). I came today and it was about 85 degrees, but it felt hot. It's near french quarters and bourbon street. I advise to just pay the $10 for the 10 hours to avoid traffic.

That's when I met Mandela. We struck up a conversation, and he generously began sharing the rich history of the French Quarter, Congo Square, his ancestors, and the vibrant cultural traditions that continue to live on today. What unfolded felt like a private, deeply personal tour. Mandela didn't just tell history--he brought it to life. He sang traditional music, explained the significance of the rhythms, the clothing, and the customs, and even shared a binder filled with images that beautifully illustrated the stories he was telling. If you have any interest in learning about raised cemeteries and the place where many of the…read morewealthy locals and former politicians are laid to rest, this is a must see. Each cemetery is unique in its own way and has special history. Of them all, I have always wanted to tour this form a race track turn cemetery because I've passed it as a child over the years. What's rather interesting is, very few companies offer tours of the Metairie cemetery. Most are focused on Lafayette or St. Louis. Lucky for us, New Orleans tours offers tours of the cemetery on a daily basis. Shelia went out of her way to accommodate our schedule, and even was nice enough to bring us cold bottles of water which was just what we needed on a rather hot day. We spent some time reviewing several tombstones including the one of the former owner of the cemetery. It should come as no surprise that former N.O. Saints owner Tom Benson is buried there along with the likes of Al Copeland, Anne Rice's husband, WCC Claiborne and heirs of Dowman, Dwyer and Kiefer. I also have the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful fallen angel sculptures and some pretty amazing stained glass. I highly recommend New Orleans tours and will most definitely take another with Shelia during another visit.

We were able to walk down every street and she could not only tell us about the building design, she was also able to tell us a story of every house we asked about. She could answer any question we had about anything on every street we walked down. She has a background as a former architect. Date of tour: December 21, 2024…read more After a wonderful food tour in Prague last year, we wanted to replicate the magic stateside while visiting New Orleans, a city with a rich food history and scene. As requested, I will keep the individual location names secret as to not spoil your potential food tour but also because the stops can change and I don't want to have you disappointed if you don't get the same places on your tour. Ty was a great guide, providing us with local history and culture as we ate our way down Magazine Street. The only complaint I have is that they didn't really interact with us during the food portions, standing or sitting off to the side, or running to the next location to make sure we were all set. To me, the guide should be not only the bridge between the locations and food with us, but also a bridge between the different groups on the tour. Ty told us before the tour started that the other folks joining us were from Michigan, but we found out from them later that they were actually from New York. Had these connections been made earlier, it would have enhanced the tour. On to the food, wonderful that it all was! Please note that I may make some errors in the actual names of the food, while I took pictures, I did not write down the names and there wasn't a post-tour recap to assist me! Stop #1: A local sandwich and a seafood side. Both quite good, especially since I don't like olives! Stop #2: An unusual meat that was shockingly good! Stop #3: Seafood options. I've had a different version of one of these items in Asheville, NC. This wasn't quite as good but still tasty. Stop #4: Southern favorites that were so good! I didn't think I would like these but I did. Stop #5: A peppermint fudge cupcake. Sadly, the weakest stop on the tour. Other that tried the gelato came away disappointed and my cupcake was neither overly fudgey or pepperminty. It looked pretty, though!
