I got so much more out of the tour than expected, with guest questions leading us into discussion of a variety of extra topics. The house and grounds are well-preserved and arranged with true historical pieces and covered nearly the whole of the property. The price was very fair and if you have interest in visiting their other site - Gallier - you can get a discount on admission (works in reverse as well). Just show your receipt when you purchase admission to the other one. Katie also generously offered me a little extra of her time after the tour to discuss additional perspectives and have an excellent local food recommendation. You read a lot about plantation slaves but not really about urban slaves, so that part was fascinating to us. The docent took us through various areas of the estate and gave us a good history of the property and its evolution throughout the decades. Definitely for history buffs but I think kids might not be interested in it. Since it was part of our tour, I can't comment on what the admission price is.

You meet at the 1850 house (you can also tour it when the walking has ended). They have a small restroom there, and they provided us with bottled water and fans on that hot afternoon. We were fortunate enough to have Carolyn as our tour guide. Her love for her home was apparent, and she spent time telling us about the gumbo that is New Orleans - from the indigenous tribes through the French/Spanish, and onwards into the American era. We did a bit of walking, but most of our stories were at stops in the shade. Very knowledgeable and accurate as we worked our way around the river side of the French Quarter. We learned about the people, the architecture, and all the parts that made the French Quarter what it is today. A great way to spend two hours and a wonderful way to help a nonprofit organization.

While we personally found the Garden District a bit less interesting than the French Quarter, that was absolutely no fault of the tour guide. You want to be told some trite stories that make for tourist sound bites that any guide can learn in a brochure But, if you really want the "low down" on how things happened in New Orleans history due to greed, human nature, culture/religion, etc then Tree is your man. He is more than a local history buff, I'd say a fanatic with in depth knowledge in wide ranging areas from architecture and symbolism to "following the money". As a result, he can put together a fascinating tale of the people and places you visit under his guidance as well as answer any question that you might wonder about during the tour. To top it off, we finished with a memorable lunch at Commander's Palace where the wait staff treated Tree and our group as if we were dignitaries. A very civilized ending to our tour! If you have any interest in learning about raised cemeteries and the place where many of the…read morewealthy locals and former politicians are laid to rest, this is a must see. Each cemetery is unique in its own way and has special history. Of them all, I have always wanted to tour this form a race track turn cemetery because I've passed it as a child over the years. What's rather interesting is, very few companies offer tours of the Metairie cemetery. Most are focused on Lafayette or St. Louis. Lucky for us, New Orleans tours offers tours of the cemetery on a daily basis. Shelia went out of her way to accommodate our schedule, and even was nice enough to bring us cold bottles of water which was just what we needed on a rather hot day. We spent some time reviewing several tombstones including the one of the former owner of the cemetery. It should come as no surprise that former N.O. Saints owner Tom Benson is buried there along with the likes of Al Copeland, Anne Rice's husband, WCC Claiborne and heirs of Dowman, Dwyer and Kiefer. I also have the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful fallen angel sculptures and some pretty amazing stained glass. I highly recommend New Orleans tours and will most definitely take another with Shelia during another visit.

We were able to walk down every street and she could not only tell us about the building design, she was also able to tell us a story of every house we asked about. She could answer any question we had about anything on every street we walked down. She has a background as a former architect. This really showed as she could point out small details I feel most tour guides would not be able to do. We had a absolutely wonderful time with Sheila. I hear she also gives tours of some of the local cemeteries so we will be looking and requesting for specifically her.
