Originally why I stopped coming was due to how crowded and unorganized it was which was such a deterrent! After the recent remodel with up to 18-20 Squat Racks, additional benches/dumbbells, and more Leg Machines, I started coming here over my favored UTC, but now that UTC downgraded from 11 Racks to 6 and removed the outdoor area in favor of potential Pickleball Courts I will not be going back unless they can bring back what they had before or even better as it's not a great place to go anymore for a Powerbuilding workout. For a Push Pull Leg workout between 3-5 days a week Balboa really hits better now and my only gripes are if they had more of the nice water bottle refill stations and cleaned the bathroom more since people come in from the pool and leave the ground wet, but the plumbing and cleanliness here is still better than at UTC which seemed to not make any changes on that front. If the dumbbells were organized as well that would be great but I can see how hard it is to manage. Overall this is my new home for now and definitely would recommend as it's not as seemingly as crowded before with more equipment availability. 3 stars but I would put 4 if the place itself was more organized and bathroom was always clean and dry!

He refuses to answer the Balboa phone at night, and when I brought it up to him, he literally told me, "I don't make enough." He completely blows off parking lot issues, and he didn't care at all when I told him members were horseplaying in the pool. On top of that, he constantly wears inappropriate, politically charged hoodies with aggressive messages on the back. For example, one reads: "I IDENTIFY AS A THREAT. MY PRONOUNS ARE TRY / ME." Is that really appropriate for a professional super sport gym?

So I decided to work with a personal trainer for a month, for a total of 8 one-hour sessions. Toya, spent a lot of time during our initial meeting gathering background information on my medical history and asking insightful questions that helped her formulate a plan. She focused on my limitations, balance concerns, posture, and strength. Instead of immediately turning to machines, she had me work on exercises aimed at improving activities of daily living such as getting up from a chair, carrying groceries, maintaining good balance, and what to do if I start to feel unsteady. Throughout our sessions, Toya closely monitored me, corrected my form, and inquired about how I was feeling that day, adjusting my workout accordingly. She stressed the importance of modifying an activity if it caused pain. Upon learning that I had trouble remembering exercises, she printed out and emailed me a list of activities with instructions on reps, weights, rests, etc. She explained the purpose of each exercise and guided me on how to progress as I gained strength. Toya also underscored the significance of stretching my muscles, especially at the end of each session, and demonstrated the proper techniques. I thoroughly enjoyed our sessions as Toya is personable and positive. As time passed, she highlighted my progress and has made a significant impact on my life. I now feel stronger, steadier, and confident that I can continue to work out independently.

But, the decided to take advantage of my membership and have the opportunity to visit the ones that benefited my list of "Things to Do" for the day. Since my doctor's appointment for today is a few blocks away from Toby Wells- it was ideal to come here. At least this location opens at 5:30am (including the indoor pool). My regular location opens at 6am. And the extra half hour really makes a difference. Although the spa area was closed this morning- the overhead music was playing at a decent volume, then decreased by the end of my hour aquatic walking & exercises. Since I tend to dedicate my hour to aquatic walking- I noticed the entire pool has depths of 3 1/2 ft to 5 Ft to 3 1/2 feet in length. Which I thought was interesting. And I liked it! Compared to Oceanside & Rancho San Diego- I like how the pool depth is lined up. Although I can swim- I prefer 5 feet being the deepest for my aquatic routine. Lifeguard staff is friendly and didn't seem bothered when I had simple questions about the facility. For the 3 YMCA locations that I've been to- the pool is the primary reason I got membership. If it's any other location that I'll visit- I make a habit to call the evening before to inquire if the pool will be open. But, I do bring a change of clothes, a n case there's a last minute pool closure. This location has a hallway leading from the men's & women's locker rooms leading to the indoor pool. The women's locker room is updated in renovations compared to the other locations. There are combo locks installed with the lockers- which is a cool feature. I asked a regular member to show me how to use it. The women's lockers are all half sized- which makes it very convenient. Plenty of makeup/ mirror stations w/ blow dryers. New shower heads and a wet suit extractor, which is also a bonus. I like how the pool area offers mini foam boards and dumbbells for your aquatic fitness regimen. Just make sure to put equipment back where you got them from

By the time I was done exercising, they spent a total of $2,000 at Nordstrom. I spent weeks dealing with the bank to get my money back. The LA Fitness staff didn't seem to care. They just said that they don't have cameras in the locker rooms, so there's not much to be done about it. There is something the staff could do to prevent theft: greet members when they come in the door! When I come in and scan my barcode, the person at the desk is usually scrolling on their phone, and they don't even look up to acknowledge me. If the staff greeted every person who came in the door, then it would give people the idea that the staff are attentive, and they would be less likely to burglarize lockers. Since this incident, I stopped leaving valuables in my locker and got a different combo lock. Nevertheless, someone got into my locked locker again (I could tell because my bag was rearranged, as if someone had gone through it). On the plus side, this is a huge gym with a ton of equipment. I can usually get onto whatever equipment I need without much of a wait. There's also plenty of parking, and it's a convenient location.

Fast forward a few months later and I am still here because it has become way more than just a gym to me. What makes this place different is how personal everything feels. Sean genuinely takes the time to understand your goals, your habits, and why you are trying to make a change. It never felt like I was just another membership or being thrown into some generic workout plan. I am someone who likes understanding the data and reasoning behind things, so the detailed scans, movement analysis, and check ins were a huge plus for me. Sean always took the time to walk me through the results in a way that actually made sense and helped me understand what needed improvement, not just physically, but with recovery, consistency, and overall lifestyle habits too. The culture at The Fit Lab is also something special. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and there is zero ego. You get honest feedback, accountability, and a team that genuinely wants to see you succeed. I originally came in wanting to improve my fitness, but I ended up learning a lot more about how to train properly, recover better, and build habits that actually feel sustainable long term. If you are looking for more than just workouts and want a place that truly cares about helping people improve their lives, I highly recommend Sean and The Fit Lab.

If you're someone who's motivated by data, feedback, and understanding the why behind what you're doing, this gym is an incredible fit. Sean, the owner, genuinely takes the time to listen, ask the right questions, and dig deeper into your goals and motivations--not just what you want to achieve, but why it matters to you. Some of my favorite highlights include: * A supportive, welcoming culture with both the team and other members * Curated workout plans tailored to your individual goals * In-depth data analysis and consultations to ensure you're on track * Flexible scheduling * Honest, real feedback--no fluff, just what you need to hear What I appreciated most was how Sean consistently walked me through my data, clearly explaining what was working and what needed adjustment, always backed by evidence. Beyond changing my physique, The Fit Lab helped me build better lifestyle habits and truly understand how to train correctly--and what that consistency can lead to long term. If you're looking for more than just workouts and want education, accountability, and real results, I can't recommend The Fit Lab enough.
