Got no insurance, but in dire need of medical care? This is your place. My fiance has no insurance. He's also a sickly boy. His lungs beef up at the first sign of dust in the air. Homeboy can't breathe without an inhaler! So, what are we to do? Well, once we went to the emergency room because he was wheezing and we were too new to the area to really know any better. He was much better after the visit, but our wallets were not. We knew it would be a matter of time before he would need another inhaler, but we didn't want to cough up another $2,000 just so he could breathe. We found Pro Med instead. It's Austin's answer for those who aren't fortunate enough to work at a place with benefits. We have only been to the place on Lamar (down south; there are three Austin locations). Not only did they get us in pretty quickly on a busy afternoon, they also got us out pretty quickly too. Well, that was the first time, anyhow. The second time it took more time, but I blame all the middle and high schoolers who kept coming in for their sports physicals. total cost each time wasn't more than $90. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet! So, my fiance got his prescriptions and we were in and out. And it wasn't, like a million dollars. How much better does it get for those without health insurance? Not much. And it's not too bad. Fiance wants health insurance. But until then, we'll be popping in for our every-three months visits. And just a warning, it's not for the faint of heart. It's basically a clinic for those with a little more money than the indigents. Don't expect the equipment to shine enough that you can see your reflection in it. Just expect some good care. The husband woke up with an ear infection this morning, so off to an urgent care center he went! He chose Pro Med because it's close to our house, but he should have checked yelp before. Here we go. He left the house before 9:30, and checked in at Pro Med before 10. The nurses gave him a ballpark wait time of an hour to an hour and a half, which is kind of a long wait at 9 am on Monday with no option to make an appointment ahead of time. But hey, it's a simple ear infection, so he figures antibiotics wouldn't be hard to get a hold of in a decent amount of time. All the while, his hearing is getting worse and he's in growing pain. But he waited. And waited. And waited. Until a few people who checked in hours after him started to get called in before him. Husband goes back up to the nurses station to check and see what the hold up might be. They assure him that it was getting close to "an hour and a half wait", and that they would get to him asap. Almost three (yes, 3!) hours go by before they finally call him in to see the doctor. While he's in the room waiting for the doctor (mind you, for a SIMPLE ear infection that he already pretty much diagnosed himself this morning), and still, no sign of the doctor. 45 minutes go by before the assistant comes in to check his ear, and decides that he can't see in his ear because it was so swollen. Gee, yeah, YA THINK? So they still can't just write him the prescription for anti-biotics at that point, and he ends up having to get his ear flushed out before the doctor plans to come in to see him. At this point, some nurse's assistant comes in to douse my husband in hydrogen peroxide in attempts to clean out his ear for the doctor. Needless to say, at this point, my husband was tired, in pain, sick, and now covered in peroxide. No doctor, no prescription. In the meantime, the young assistant kept pestering him about how frequently he cleans his ears, even though he said he didn't see anything in his ear to make him ask that? Finally, the doc comes in, says it's a an ear infection, and writes him his much awaited-for prescription for ta-DAH! Generic anti-biotics. Half a day later... The nurses asked him to come back this week for a check up! Yeah right! And take the whole day off work to sit in a stuffy waiting room with sick people? I think next time we will try the ER. read more

So here is the deal with Pro Health Medical. My doctor closes on the day before thanksgiving, which is of course the day that my minor cold turns into a full blown ear ache. I call this place. Apparently they were open till 10, which is a plus, and the waits were relatively short. I showed up at 8 O'Clock, was in within 15 minutes, saw the doctor, got the diagnosis ..and was out like 5 minutes later. All that- good. The problem, over the phone they told me that they took my insurance. When I arrived they informed me that they took only one form of my insurance company and not the other! Aghast but ear aching, I decided to suck it up and pay the actual price for the 5 minute visit ( 86 dollars!!!!!) Yeah. They said I could file a claim to get some of it back, but all of it was pretty annoying. If these antibiotics work, and my insurance gives me some money back, Ill probably be feeling a little better about Pro Med. When your doctors office is closed ( like on weekends or late nights) and you either have the right insurance,( I would call to find out what they accept) or no insurance ( then it doesn't matter) come here. Service was quick, the place was clean and centrally located. But the bill...was huge. read more

Jesus Pro Med, it's like you want me to feel shitty about my life. From the hour wait for THE SIMPLEST ISSUE EVER (poison ivy, just give me steroids, dammit), to the shoddy everything (toilet paper holder dangling off wall, peeling paint), the signs indicating that they can no longer accept Medicare or Medicaid (and cannot allow Medicare patients to pay privately!?)... This place makes it clear that you are poor and they don't give a damn about your time. The doctor would not give me what I asked for (an injection) and instead gave me a prescription that I could have had my uncle write for me. Reason for not giving the cortisone injection? "Because it could leave a dent in my cute little tush" I kid you not. I hate you, Pro Med. Thanks for wasting my time and money. Avoid this place like the plague if you can. Addendum- After pulling into the parking lot of a pharmacy, I decided, "No, fuck this, this customer is RIGHT," and I went back to the clinic, insisted on a shot, paid a little more, and got what I wanted. I sliced open my hand at my job, it was bad enough to get some stitching done. I had never before been to Pro Med, but a friend suggested it and it was close to where I was. The staff and doctor I saw were Great! I was in the medical field myself for 25 yrs and I'm kind of a snob about the level of care i expect. Came here urgently and received care quickly. I've been here on multiple occasions in the past and they are pretty good about getting you in and out within the hour if you come early. They have a lab onsite so they could give you quick results and prescriptions as needed. You will get called into a private room and meet with a doctor who reviews your lab results and symptom description. I found the care to be affordable in comparison to other places with and without insurance, but they did a pretty good job when working with my insurance. This is the first place I would come when needing quick care for the smoothest experience possible. read more

I got a weird skin condition right before I was supposed to go out of town, and didn't have time to get in with a primary care doc. I went in and got diagnosed with shingles and put on Valtrex. Unfortunately, the Valtrex had bad side effects and didn't seem to help much. So I followed up with my regular doctor a few days after the Valtrex ran out. Turns out I did not have shingles. I had something else entirely, something that Valtrex wouldn't help. So I spent a week on drugs that made me feel sick and didn't address the problem. I spent time being miserable because the doctor was incompetent. read more

I chose pro med urgent care because of its location to get what seemed like a cold checked out..just in case. There were two people in front of me and waited one hour in the waiting room and after taken into a patient room, another hour, just sitting there without any heads up on what was going to happen. The admin staff weren't bad but there was nothing "urgent" about this place. I was asked to pay beforehand and was charged $40 copay(specialist) instead of the $20 copay(Dr. visit) since I was seeing a "specialist." I kept wishing I had not prepaid since I would've gladly left during the long wait. The person who ended up coming in after the 2-hour wait was a PA(aka "specialist") and after some questions(this part took 2mins) prescribed me to some antibiotics(another 30mins to wait for the prescription). I rarely(this was my first other than knee surgery, car accident...etc.) visit any doctors or clinics for really anything but I would seriously consider looking into a primary care physician just to avoid something like what I experienced here. To rate this place one-star without any previous experience in this type of facility might be too critical... but I just really didn't like it. Go to a primary care physician. This has been the worst year for me having allergies. After all that my body has said no mas. This past week I started feeling worse and it was at the wrong time. The insurance on my new job has about 2 1/2 weeks to kick in but I couldn't take it any longer. Went here on a Friday night at about 8:00 (they close at 10) and got in and out before they closed. Dr. Saeed was very helpful. He told me that for allergies around Austin Zyrtec is the best OTC medicine to take rather than Claritin. Turned out I had an upper respiratory infection. He prescribed what I need and told me what home remedies to take. I left off one star because when I checked out the girl behind the counter mumbled a lot and snapped at me when I asked her to repeat my total. It was AWFUL. Equipment was old and outdated. I came in as a result of hrowing out my back which I do every year. Doctor says that promed does not prescribe vicodin and I would need to go to ER for that. My assumption (perhaps incorrect) is that this is a bad neighborhood and promed does not want to be the neighbhorhood dealer. Dcotor gave me a shot (muscle relaxant) which he said would not make me woozy. I ended up stopping the car because the shot made me dizzy. Quack! Quack! Went there today with an eye injury. Diagnosed as a scratched cornea. Couldnt find anything in my eye. I left the place exactly the same way I got there, with a rag over my eye and in great discomfort. A couple hours later, I was sitting there and I felt some tiny object fall out of my eye. I was gouged 200 bucks for nothing. This isnt the first time either. But it will be the last. When I walked in the door, there wasnt a soul in there. Now I know why. read more

I recently came down with a virus that hit me much harder than I had expected it to at the start. Sore throat, swollen tonsils, fatigue. I tried to power through it after a few days and the work day just kept adding on the pressure. Knowing that I had a busy weekend ahead of me at work, I decided I should go to an urgent care facility that night just to see if this was something more serious like strep. I quickly googled the nearest urgent care and saw that PRO MED was nestled perfectly between work and home. I began to get a little distressed upon seeing the reviews but decided that my need outweighed my apprehension. Since I was going to be walking in an hour before closing I decided to go online and print out my forms before going in as to expedite the process. I came in with a smile on my face and hope in my heart. If I put out good vibes, good things will happen for me. My smile was returned by every member of the staff. Polite and direct, they attended to me quickly and with a great attitude. I was lucky in that I was the first to arrive before the closing rush and was able to get in within 5 minutes. Everyone was very friendly to me and thorough in their questions. I was expecting it to be a dingy place based off of the reviews but it seemed like a normal office to me. It didn't have the bells and whistles and updated aesthetics, but the equipment was fine and the staff presentable. My doctor was quick and to the point and prescribed me medicine that absolutely helped with the discomfort I was feeling. With my comfort level rising, I was able to get a full day of peaceful rest and was much better after. I felt totally comfortable at PRO MED and my illness was correctly diagnosed and resolved. That is all I can really ask for. I paid out of pocket, a little more than I was expecting. They do charge the same as some "nicer" facilities I have been to. But all in all, it only mattered to me that I was cured and treated with respect and I got exactly what I asked for. Thank you! read more

My son had an accident jumping around and acting stupid, he wound up spraining his ankle fairly bad and was in a lot of pain, fortunately it wasn't a break. This was way faster than the emergency room would have been and 100 bucks cheaper co-pay . Nothing was bad, nothing was stellar, a-ok indeed. Went there after a pretty major bike wreck - no broken bones, but abrasions all over my body. Of course the Dr. was closed and I didn't want to wait 12 hours and be charged exhorbitant fees at the ER. They took my insurance (United Healthcare) and I was seen in under 15 minutes. Staff was very friendly, attentive, knowledgeable gave us more gauze, etc. to take home, got the prescriptions I needed, and all for less than $100. What more could you ask? read more

I went to ProMed with a work related injury. I knew better than to choose this place for my primary care, I mean, I have read the reviews. First rattle out of the bag, I was lead to the drug testing area. There is a small bar with two techs on one side, handing out pee cups. All of the patients just rotate in and out of the waterless bathroom and line their urine cups on the patient's side of the bar. The waterless bathroom had urine from floor to ceiling. It smelled like death and I had to touch the doorknob to exit. Yuck! The two techs were somewhat robotic in their interactions with the patients, but they cussed and giggled inappropriately among themselves. After using our sample, they pour the leftover urine in the sink at the bar where we are allowed to wash our hands. There was no attempt to rinse the area or be dainty about it, just urine everywhere. On my paperwork, I noted that I was having some tingling in my leg and foot. This was never addressed nor was I given the opportunity to elaborate on this. I was diagnosed with a broken tailbone from X-rays that I had already gotten, and told to go on light duty. I told the MD that the Motrin that I had been taking was not sufficient. He said, and I quote: 'I'll check the DPS website and if you don't have 20 pages of Vicodin prescriptions, I have no problems prescribing that to you'. Basically he said, if you aren't a drug addict, I don't mind taking care of you. I already felt like doodoo and wanted to run screaming in the opposite direction of this place. Now I felt like a druggie too. Anyway, I was told to sit in the waiting area while he Googled me, or whatever. I let with two follow up dates, walk-in dates of course, and a RX for Vicodin. I am not an addict after all. This place is patient factory. They herd people in and really seem to take advantage of work related injuries. There is no reason that was made evident during my appointment that I should have 2 follow ups. I have a broken tailbone and only time can heal that. Had he addressed my tingling extremity, a follow may have made more sense. Please avoid this place. You will leave feeling terrible about yourself and your life choices. I am not exaggerating. read more

I visited with a small foreign object in my eye I knew to be ferrous metal. Before I finshed filling my form out they had me in a room. A doctor came in immediately, administered pain reliever drops and very deftly removed a metal splinter from the center of my eye. I then finished filling my personal information form, paid and left. I was there for less than 30 minutes, most of the time taken filling forms. The bill was $116, I think very reasonable for the thorough and professional job they did. read more

Husband went here with severe back pain. As soon as he walked in, the staff seeing his pain called him immediately to be examined. Turned out to be kidney stones, they gave him a shot which immediately stopped the pain, took x-rays, and gave him the diagnosis. They gave him pain pills and pills to prevent infection. The bill was $320, much less than a visit to the emergency room. They even called a few days later to see his progress. The place is not fancy, the equipment looks outdated, the exam room needed painting. But the staff and doctor really cared. Thank you Pro-Med for being there when we needed you! read more

Went in to have a doc look at a dog bite. Asked over the phone whether they were busy and was told "no." Got there and waited almost an hour. Then was moved to a waiting room where I sat for another 15 minutes. Doc was nice, helpful...wrote a prescription for antiobiotic if I needed it. Physician's assistant cleaned and wrapped my injury. Returned later for a tetanus shot and had to wait another 45 minutes even though there were only 5 other people in the office. I may try another clinic next time... read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had with medical care. I was prescribed a medication called Aldara for genital warts a couple weeks ago and after three uses I had a horrible reaction to the medication. The medication gave me a chemical burn and broke out in open sores and ulcers, everything was swollen and tender and I couldn't use the restroom without serious pain. I went to Pro Med in order to seek help and relief from this reaction, instead I met Dr. Bruce Patterson. He came in and asked my symptoms and then left abruptly after I explained them. A couple minutes later a nurse came in and wanted to do a herpes test. I explained that I do not have herpes, I was tested a month ago and that this is an extreme reaction to medication I was taking. She went out and brought old Bruce back in. He took a cursory glance at my genitals and said,"Yep, that's herpes." I explained one more time that this is a reaction to the medication, he was not listening. He said. " I've seen a lot of herpes in my day and that is herpes." Then left the room again abruptly but this time slammed the door. When he came back in the room he had a prescription for herpes medication and that was it. I told him that I am not taking medication that I don't need and I am in serious pain and would like treatment for my problem rather than assuming it's a different problem. At that point he started to get up and say, "well perhaps you need a different doctor." I didn't argue with him on that, but at this point it is Saturday and you are the one I've got. He said he would write me a prescription for painkillers and asked if I had ever taken them before. I said no. He told me he was prescribing me Vicotin, then went on to say, "which I'm sure you know is a very strong painkiller." (I just told you I don't take painkillers!) At this point I asked him, " I don't really understand why I am being treated in this manner. I feel like you are not even listening to anything I've said." He said," I don't know why you are refusing to take the herpes test, but I guess you can live in denial all you want. " At that point I was soooo angry I told him fine I will take your fucking test, it's going to come back negative and then what. My test came back NEGATIVE and I am still in pain. Dr. Bruce Patterson is unprofessional and neglected to treat my symptoms or even treat me with an ounce of respect. Here's the thing, I'm appalled by my treatment and I knew I didn't have herpes, but what if I had, this is the way a doctor tells you that you have an incurable STD. I am seeking legal recourse so hopefully the next patient doesn't have to deal with the same unprofessionalism and neglect. read more

Dr. Saeed was working the Thanksgiving weekend shift in the evening--not the best time slot I'm sure--and the waiting room had 20 plus people in it--apparently everyone gets sick or breaks an arm at all those holiday family get-togethers, but he was most polite, courteous, and just darn funny. Horrible. Do not go. Too many rude secretaries who only acknowledge guys they wanted to flirt with and are always just talking amongst themselves. I waited a long time to be seen for a sore throat, fever symptoms. In the waiting room- which is pretty bad- I saw a lady that came with a bleeding nose.After a couple of hours I was finally seen by this "doctor". She ordered the blood test which was performed by a very inexperienced woman who could not get a vein-which is always very easy with me. She kept poking me, finally a little blood came out and she obviously did not get it right I waited about 3 minutes for the vile to be filled to about 1/10. I almost found my own vein to make this easier. I thought she is new let me be her guinea pig as taking blood is not a big deal for me. I did however inquire if that would be enough blood and she stated that would be plenty. Finally the rude lady "doctor " comes back with the results, saying well you probably have a viral infection but your platelet count is extremely low you should see a doctor.I thought I was seeing one. I inquired how serious it was. She stated you can started bleeding internally and if you hit your head or something like it you can die. Now you can go home. Well, I wondered if it was low after the adventure the phlebotomist had with my arm would it not keep bleeding? I asked for a copy of the results as I come from a family of doctors to ask my dad about it. I was very tired of waiting and concerned. Once at home I called my father but I could not reach him. I searched online for the count and its meaning and it was pretty scary the recommendation being to get a blood transfusion.I remembered the nose bleeding lady and I called the clinic to make sure I was given the correct results. She rudely stated : did the results have your name on it? I said yes but the low platelet count would have made my arm keep bleeding after the blood drawn and there was a lady in the waiting room with a nose bleed that would not stop. She stated those are your results. I could not reach my father so I called my cousin who is also a doctor and he said go to the hospital right now, this is pretty serious. I went to Saint Davis, there they retested everything and everything was normal- besides the flu. They had given me the wrong results. I wondered about the other poor lady. I called the clinic the next day -as it was already 4 am by the time I got out of Saint Davis.- I was rudely treated . They called me a liar, once they found out I had both results and I was willing to get retested then- platelets would not be at normal levels in such a short period of time, they finally told me to speak with the clinic's manager who was never available. After trying to speak with her for a while I was finally able to explain the situation and in the beginning she stated Saint Davis was wrong but finally said she would refund my copay. this is a very serious issue with private medical records and misdiagnosis. She never admitted they were wrong and I insisted to know if the correct patient had received the correct diagnosis being such a serious issue, she never confirmed it. I had gone to this clinic before the doctors are horrible- besides Dr Paterson- the older gentleman who is a very good doctor and the only reason I went to this horrible clinic.The place is dirty- walls are dirty, the cheap vinyl on the beds are dirty, the waiting room is dirty. I don't know why with the abundance of secretaries that just sit and gossip why not have someone clean the place.The other experiences I had with other doctors were pretty bad, they just look at you and say well you have this or that. Now doctor Patterson is a responsible and ethical doctor, but I had a doctor who looked at my urine and said you are fine. Dr Patterson is the only good doctor in the clinic. But besides him, STAY AWAY. I have an excellent health care plan and only went there because it is close and they were open late and I know it is hard when you don't have health insurance to find a clinic without having to go to the ER, but there are other clinics in Austin that charge less than they do and are better. read more

Just what medical care should be. Everyone from reception to the great nurse was terrific. The nurse was friendly and sympathetic while being professional and super competent. Dr Esparza took the time to ask details about symptoms and described the pathology of what was happening. He offered treatment choices and options and clearly explained them. I took a terrible fall off of a horse and was in a terrible amount of pain. I really wanted to avoid the wait and the cost of an ER so we decided to head to pro med. The visit was actually quite nice and the staff was wonderful. Honestly, I would probably go back if I was in need of urgent but non-emergency care. That night we were told everything on the X-Rays looked okay and I was prescribed pain killers. However, Two weeks after my initial visit, they called me to tell me that they had intended to call me earlier (for a patient wellness-check) but my file had been placed aside and no one touched it for over a week. Then, the lady asked me if I was aware that I had fractures in my back - which I was not. I then scheduled an appointment with a specialist and he required my X-Rays from Pro med. We had called them and verified that we needed them, however we were later informed that they had misplaced my X-Rays and they had no idea where they were. They did eventually locate the X-Rays, however they did not call to tell us this, we had to call them and ask ourselves. So, if you go to Pro-Med, do expect a nice staff a quick, cheap visit. However, they may get sloppy with your medical papers. If you get an X-Ray, don't be surprised if they call you back a few days later and change your diagnosis when a specialist takes a look at it. I really do believe that this was a freak incident that happened with my case. read more

Never ever will I go back to this place! Spent a major part of my day - 4 and a half hour for a simple issue. We were made to wait 3 hours just to be seen by a doctor. The doctor spent no more than 60 seconds with us and recommended a pain killer. Waited another hour for someone else to come and finish off the appointment. Slowest possible service, not enough doctors (basically one very slow doctor) and they do not tell you upfront that it's going to be long, long wait. Had a skin irritation from some chemicals at the manicurist. I heard tons of horror stories from friends that it might be some sort of dangerous infection so I went to the Pro Med Care to have it checked out. I filled out the papers and waited for a 10 minutes before I was called back, which I thought was great. The nurse quickly came in to assess the issues and take my stats very nice lady about to have a baby. Shortly after that Dr. Saeed came in to figure what was going on. Naturally, I was in a bit of a panic and rambled an intense hypocandriac story of how I don't want my fingers to fall off. Well maybe not that much of a panic but I was nervous. The Doctor was calm reassuring and very attentive. He was a great listener and really heard me, Wow sounds unbeliveable ,but true. Well it turns out that I just had an allergic reaction and I'm fine. Friendly staff, plan to wait and my experience with a workers comp doctor, should be called a ducktor, quack quack quack, was simply ridiculous. He didn't even examine my injury and tried to tell me I had a pre-existing condition. I wouldn't trust him to put air in a paper bag. I think his name was Peggy, like in the TV commercial, actually I'm still so incensed I can't remember but something like Valentin in his last name. Bottom line is their might be a decent Dr. here but I didn't meet one and I won't go back to find out since Texas Med Clinic is just as close and maybe just as bad but you can't get any worse than a ducktor who doesn't care. read more
