I can't understand why they want to bleed you dry here. I brought my camera in because a button had come off when I dropped it. After a $25 diagnostic fee, they called me back, asking for $180 to buy the same camera and scrap it for parts. Funnily enough, I found the exact part I needed on eBay for $15. I said no thanks and did the repair myself. I was also not given any of the "diagnostics" I had paid to be told when I picked up the camera. read more

My experience was not positive and after 7 weeks asked for my camera back I took my Lumix into the store on March 22. The viewfinder needed to be replaced. The rest of the camera worked. I was told the part was on back order until April 5th. I said while I would like to have it back by April 15, the date I really was hoping to have it back by was May 4. I was told by the technician April 15 would be a 'maybe' but for sure by May 4th. Both deadlines came and went. Over the next few weeks I both called and sent a friend to ask about the repair. Both times same 'waiting for the part'. On May 16th I went back to the store myself, 7 weeks after I originally drooped off the camera. I asked for a status update and the clerk offered to check with the technician who is upstairs. And checking in meant yelling upstairs: "There is a (my name) asking about his camera. It has been with us for a while." To which I heard a reply: "Oh yeah, I really need to call and see about that part." That was enough and I asked for my camera back. Very bad customer service. At what point were they going to call and inquire about the part? After week 5? After I called the first time? After I had my friend stop by? They had multiple opportunities to check. They also had several opportunities to reach out to me as the customer and say "There has been a delay. We are working on finding out why." The "I should really check on that" to my interpretation meant it was just gathering dust on a shelf while they prioritized other work. Adding insult to injury, as I took my camera back, I was asked if I wanted a call when the part ever did arrive. Again, the camera itself worked. So I was left without my camera for 7 weeks when I could have still had and been using it, albeit without the benefit of the larger screen of the viewfinder? I declined and left. When I look back on this experience, it shall not be with a positive view. read more

The staff do not make one feel important. It's as if they have no interest in selling, which is bizarre. They don't make eye contact, smile, or help you. It's just an unfriendly place. After repeated attempts at getting a label so I could return an item, I give up. With the one exception, I got nothing but the runaround. The exception is Sally, who tried her best to get a return for me and I thank her for her effort. It's a small spot and it's located inside this weird little food court mall arcade thing, so you have to go inside the building first. We came here to procure a weird part (3.5mm to XLR for a Røde mic, not exactly a common audio adapter) and they happened to have one in stock! Staff were very helpful and it was great to be able to call and quickly talk to a human to verify the inventory (in the age of "please hold for a customer service representative" and labyrinthine phone menus). read more

I thought I had ruined my Film Camera, Canon AE-1 Program while one vacation in DC, so I took it to Pro Photo Inc, expecting the worst. It's a family owned business and one can tell they love what they do and the family dynamic seems lovely. I ended up getting my camera fixed (I had unscrewed something) at no charge, was shown how to deal with the problem on my own next time and I was NOT CHARGED a dime. My biggest concern was the pictures I had already taken but they used extreme caution and managed to fix it all without ruining any of my memories. Ironically, the next day I came back with another problem I had caused myself and AGAIN, they fixed the problem WITHOUT charging me a dime. I typically do not post reviews but they dealt with me honestly and fairly. I wish they could clone themselves and open up a store in Los Angeles, closer to me (o: A business that could've easily taken advantage of the fact I had no idea what was going on and charge me for things not needed is worth having as neighbors. On top of that, a business that doesn't charge for the small things they do even though they have the right to do so, is a second reason why is recommend them to anyone living close by. I needed a digital passport photo for applying visa. This is the closest location near me to get one as cvs does not provide digital version of passport photo. The staff here are very friendly. The service was very quick as I also got two physical copies on top of the digital copy. The digital photo got sent to me within 30 mins, and very thankful for the quick turnaround. I am very pleased with the service I received at this store. They were all great, I brought in my camera with my flash and trigger because I couldn't figure out how to make it work together for the life in me. Turns out I had to reset the entire settings on the camera but as they helped me figure the problem out, they insisted in fixing my issue although we couldn't figure out what was wrong with it at first. Great service. Was in a rush to get some passport photos done, and all the places in the area I wandered into weren't providing the service because their cameras were broken. Glad I came across this place--really nice and helpful staff, no line even though I came during lunch, and was even offered the chance to retake the photo. Definitely referring all my colleagues at work. They charge $15 for US passport photos, $19 for international. There's one place down the street that charges $30, so I consider this a real bargain! read more

Service was friendly and speedy, but I had gone for passport photos for a European country and the photos turned out not to be the right format so I had to have them retaken elsewhere. Just keep in mind - if you're getting photos for something international, make sure you know ALL the constraints and make sure those are followed if you get them taken here. read more

Friendly staff and good cross selection of most known camera brands. They were very helpful with helping me look for a ND filter, giving me a few options instead of just plunking down the most expensive piece of glass they had in the store and telling me "this is the one you want". They were fairly busy when I went in, but i was helped pretty quickly. The store is clean and laid out in a way that doesn't feel too cluttered. They do sell some Leia gear which is my favorite brand, but they didn't have too much in stock. Overall, good place. I would certainly give them a thumbs up! read more

A few months ago I imported an Olympus Pen W, a fairly rare 1960s camera, from Japan, and to my dismay it was broken on arrival (film advance completely locked and shutter button didn't do anything). I tried everything to get the parts moving on my own, but as this is a pretty obscure and fiddly camera, I didn't have high hopes that I could get it fixed. I brought it to Pro Photo to see if anything could be done, they accepted the repair immediately, and after a couple weeks I was told to pick it up. I was told that the mechanical issues were fixed, light seals were replaced, and parts lubricated. After running a couple rolls through, I can confirm that it works perfectly! The repair cost was not cheap and it did take a while, but for me it was worth it to have what is essentially a professionally refurbished Pen W to use. I will definitely go back should I have any future issues with this or other cameras. read more

I was looking for a shop to develop my 35mm film and pro photo is one of the few in Washington DC. Along with repairing cameras and having lots of photo gear in the store, the quality of the prints were amazing. Better than anything Walmart or CVS could do. Only complaint was it cost a little over $26 to have ONE roll of film developed. Other than a very friendly neighborhood photo store! Would recommend! Turn around time was 8 days! read more

Liars. Liars. Liars. I went there with a self-photographed visa photo and showed it to the staff. I asked him to print a book of photos for me. He said "your photo looks weird. Your head is tilted forward. What did you shoot the photo with?" Huh? I do have a spinal problem. But does that "damage" the photo? After I explained it to him it's my neck problem, he appeared speechless. He went inside with the photo and came back shortly (apparently after discussing with somebody inside. "We can print the photos for $20, but I can't promise the photos will be ready after three days. Or I can shoot your photo now and print them for $20. You can get them today." That was the most incredulous thing I heard for the longest time! The cost to print photos in CVS is as low as $.29 per photo! Here it costs $20! And it's the same as photoshoot! That's like forcing me to pay $20 in either case! Then the funniest thing happened. A lady's voice came from behind the wall "the picture is not pixelated!" Huh! The first time I heard "pixelated"! The staff added "We can't promise that you photo won't be rejected by the Embassy." Huh! Guess what. I went to CVS, printed the visa photo and was accepted by the French embassy. I don't think you can trust these liars with anything you want to purchase here. There's nothing wrong with making money, but lying to make money shouldn't be tolerated. read more

I took a chance with Pro Photo recently to have both my bodies sensors cleaned. I wanted to like Pro Photo because they're a small local camera shop, which tends to be a dying breed these days. And in all fairness, they do employ a few really great people who know their stuff. But let's get real here. They charged me $250 to have both sensors cleaned. I used to pay $60 per camera at Penn Camera. What in the world costs $250 when cleaning a sensor? They also changed all my settings. I expect some exposure settings changed. But I didn't realize they would change the file type. I got the cameras back and quickly ran off to photograph a concert. Once home and uploading the photos into Lightroom, I realized the file size was far smaller than normal. That's when I realized everything was shot in .jpg. Now, why would a professional camera store cleaning my image sensor switch the file type over to .jpg? Wouldn't they want all available data within the image? Nope, they switched mine and failed to tell me. Sure, I suppose it's my fault for not checking. I haven't shot .jpg in years, so I didn't even think to look at that. It certainly won't happen again. But I certainly won't be shopping at Pro Photo again. There is no excuse that could make up for a total lost series of images. It was lazy on their part to switch to the smaller file type and failing to tell me. On top of that, they charged me far more than I would ever consider paying. Nope, I won't go back. And I wouldn't ever recommend Pro Photo to anyone who is serious about their gear. read more

I've used these guys a couple of time for cleanings and repairs of both DSLR bodies and lenses. I was okay with their prices (which are steep) because you can tell that they really have expertise and do a great job. What I'm not okay with is their lack of responsiveness and communication. They've now had a lens of mine (my primary everyday lens) for over three weeks. They called me after about 10 days with an estimate, and I told them to go ahead. Then they called me back a few days later with the same estimate - as if they'd completely forgotten about their earlier call. I stopped in three weeks after I dropped off the lens to check in on it, and no one could find the lens. A man took my phone number and said he'd call me the next day. No one did, so I called back. Now they're saying two or three more days because they're waiting for "parts." As with a previous reviewer, it really pains me to give these guys a negative review. I want to support local businesses, and I want to reward expertise and knowledge. But unless they speed up their workflow and improve their communication with clients, I don't think I can bring anything else in in the future. read more

After being referred to Pro Photo by my photography teacher, I dropped my camera (Nikon D3100) off after dropping it on the cement. I asked them to take a look at everything and call me with a quote. About ten days later, they called and quoted me about $400 and said it would take 2-3 for repairs. I was hesitant because I thought I could almost replace the camera for that cost, but went ahead and approved the cost. Three weeks later, I called and asked for a status update on my camera. They told me that they were unaware that I approved the quote. I then mentioned it had been three weeks since the approval and they told me the parts were on backorder (on obvious lie to cover their tracks). Now, two weeks later, I have called three times asking when my camera will be ready. Each time I am told that someone will return my call yet no one has called me. I just spoke with someone at the store who told me that now (5 weeks later) no one can find my paperwork or my camera and they are asking me how I know what is wrong with my camera. I could have purchased a new camera weeks ago and saved myself this entire headache. I cannot believe the lack of customer service and would never recommend a friend to this place of business. We will see if I ever get my camera back-- working or not. read more

It pains me to write this review. I really wanted to like this place, as they've been around forever and came highly recommended to me. I dropped a rangefinder off in July with a maligned rangefinder patch. I'd read a few how-to's online which illustrate very clearly the procedure of removing the hot shoe cover and tweaking a few small screws under the hood. I decided to save myself the headache and leave it to the pros. I brought my camera in on a Saturday and was told the adjustment would be around $45 and take about a week to turnaround. Totally acceptable. A month goes by before they call and quote me $180 for the adjustment. I'm also quoted $110 to repair my Canon 50mm prime that is 'falling apart.' I thought this odd because the lens had been CLA'd about 18 months prior, and was just fine when I dropped it off. Almost another month goes by and I decide to pop in on a day off to see if any progress has been made. The rangefinder adjustment was made, though the vertical alignment is still off by a hair. My Canon prime is, in fact, falling apart now. It's funny what sitting on a shelf for two months will do to a lens. Additionally, the rubber thumb grip which was provided (and noted on my invoice) for a re-skin estimate was missing. Pro Photos response? "Come back in a few days. We might find it." I should also note that they kept my invoice acknowledging receipt of the thumb grip. To some, that may seem negligible, but this isn't a part that ever comes up on eBay or can be ordered from Voigtlander. So for nearly $200 (after tax) I got: A poor rangefinder alignment, a broken lens, and missing parts from my camera. I've been a devout film shooter since the mid-90's. I primarily shoot Hasselblad and Leica. Shops with the skill and knowledge to maintain this older gear are few and far between. I was elated to find that there was a local shop here with a good reputation. I was happy to pay a premium for face-to-face consultation and quick turnaround times, but my experience with Pro Photo was poor at best. read more

My allegation: Picture Perfect Super nice people who know their stuff. They were helping out a couple of pros both times I was in the store, but they were equally attentive and willing to help a hobbyist. And they helped without the snobbery I have experienced at other places where one's lesser skills, lower budget, and non-fancy equipment makes you feel looked down upon if you are not downright ignored. They made repairs that were done when they said they would be. They let you try stuff out. I will be a returning customer! read more

I have to admit that I went to a couple of chain stores first before trying Pro Photo only because they were closer and more convenient to me, but they ended up being a waste of time as none could do anything to help me repair a Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that had gone bad. The best they could do was to sell me a new lens or offer to "send it out for repair" at a cost of $175 when a new lens was $199. If I wanted to send it some place, I'm sure I could have just contacted Sony and done that myself. I found Pro Photo out of frustration with the other stores and while not as convenient, the customer service was much better. They offered to take a look at the camera for free, which shocked me as everyone seems to charge exorbitant fees to diagnosis anything these days, but as I could see they had someone in-house who did this I was fine with that. A day later, they called back to say that the gears were stripped and that the cost of repair wasn't justified, and offered me some replacement options. After doing some research, I was able to find a cheap replacement on eBay, but was able to pick up my camera with no questions asked and better yet no charge. While Pro Photo wasn't able to help me this time beyond confirming that the lens was a lost cause, I would definitely go back to them for any repair needs as they seem to know what they're doing and are more concerned about doing the right thing than scamming you. read more

I dropped off two lenses for a quote, a telephoto lens one for a front-mount repair and a 17-85mm for a cleaning -- I'd taken the lens into sandy Antelope Canyon and after coming back out felt a change in the focusing smoothness (it was a little crunchier and I was worried about sand having gotten in through the focus rings). I told them that I needed the work done as soon as possible as I am going out of town for a year soon. I was told I'd have a quote within 4 business days - one technician I spoke to said he estimated the first repair would be around 70$. I called after 7 business days and was told I'd be contacted later that day. I wasn't. I had to call again the next day and complain about the delay -- lo and behold they called me back within 30 minutes. I was speaking to a different technician than the one I gave the lens to and the first repair turns out will be around $100. The technician said the second lens had nothing wrong with it, although the first technician I spoke to nodded his head and accepted the lens. I haven't decided if I'm going to pay for their work, but I'm frustrated that I don't have time to go find another repair shop because I've sunk so much time waiting for this one, only to have been given an inappropriate quote early and my second repair dismissed. It makes you question if the work will really take "less than a week" like they say now, and also makes you wonder if the price to pay for their customer service is worth it. read more

I told Chloe what kind of camera I had and what I was interested in for a new camera, and she immediately knew what would help me. I highly recommend Pro Photo for DSLR consultation and repair. I took my camera in for a sensor cleaning and lens cleaning today, and the gentleman - I believe the owner - who helped me was friendly, knowledgeable, and really helpful. He diagnosed my problem and offered solutions readily. The repair prices are a bit higher than chain stores, and higher than the manufacturer, so I'll be sending the camera there for this particular cleaning, but after experiences with other "expert" photography stores in the DC metro area, I will only be taking my equipment here! They also have a wide range of new and used lenses, camera bodies, camera lens hoods for all types of lenses, and camera bags. Added bonus that it's within walking distance of the Farragut North and West Metro stops. Impressive! read more

I just couldn't figure out what was wrong with the viewfinder of my Canon 5D. Given my beloved camera is a 13-year old model and Canon won't repair it. I needed to find someone who would. Within 30 seconds, Charles knew what was wrong and the part that was missing (a focusing screen). Of course, he didn't have the part BUT he did find out which one I needed and gave my sensor a little clean. It was easy for me to get the part and put it in all on my own. Very grateful because I do not have $2,700 for the latest 5D model. read more

Very useless shop. I brought my camera here and let them know that canon already told me there was an issue with my shutter. I wanted to know if they would be able to fix it in store so I would not have to send it in to canon. They kept my camera for inspection and told me I just needed a new sd card and charged me for "their time", my camera is still experiencing the same issue. The customer service at this store can't be beat. They are the most knowledgeable staff and will never try to rip you off. In fact, they often offer you tips for saving money or getting money back by selling your equipment to them. I've bought protective gear, a prime lens, and an external flash unit among other things from them. They are a bit pricey compared to online vendors but worth it to get the right information, advice, a chance to see the product up close and personal, and take the product home that day. read more
