This place is horrible. Please go somewhere else they lost my film and have the worst customer service.

My go2 place for all 8mm film needs! I ship to them and it's always been swift turnaround time for film processing. 10/10 would recommend.

I deleted my previous review as I finally spoke to a sales manager who said that she would speak to the owner about the mix up with my scans. 1 week later still nothing. If you are looking for a lab to get anything meaningful scanned, for a job or client please take your film elsewhere. There are a lot of other competent labs in LA. If you are scanning film of your significant other on vacation or anything of a personal nature pro8 will do. Scanned 24 rolls of film here, the first job we completed since covid. Lab tech took it upon himself to scan it how he saw fit for the project without consulting us before making the decision. We have received no help trying to rectify this and had to move on. I've been using this company for over 5years and will never do business here again. @pro8, you need to remove the section under values on your website: "Every frame matters, every client matters." Sent out my film 3 weeks ago and within a few days they sent out an email saying they received my film and that the turn around days were 5-7 business days. Still haven't gotten updates after 3 weeks and now I'm trying to call them to contact them but I get put on hold for 20 minutes and once it starts to actually ring after the automated messages, they hang up. I called back again and immediately it rings and they pick up the phone, but hang up again. Third time calling, I get put back on the automated message, and after 10 minutes they bring me back to the beginning saying "press 1 for this info, press 2 for this info etc". Finally when I get into contact with them, they say my film can't be scanned bc only the first few feet were shot and the rest came out blank. Understandable that how the film came out wasn't their fault and is probably a problem within the camera but they could've notified me somehow, through email or phone that my film couldn't be scanned. They offered to refund for the scanning portion of the order but if I haven't called I would've lost like $40-50 and would still be waiting for my film to come back read more

A couple of years ago I bought their most expensive Super8 camera. Since then, I have used their services throughout the years with mixed results. (Once they just never sent my order, it just sat on their dock). Over the last 6 months I attempted to get questions answered on 3 different topics. I used their online question form. Two were questions about cameras they discussed in their blogs. The third was about that expensive camera I purchased from them. I have never received a response. So I called and talked to someone, let them know I never got responses from previous questions, and they said they would have someone get back to me. Of course nobody got back. I'm not sure how they stay in business treating customers like this. You can go anywhere else and get better service and better prices. read more

Their website is extremely confusing! It should be completely revamped and made more user friendly. I have had them processing and scan 6 rolls of Super-8 on 5 order. Everyone one has had issues from mistakes I during the extremely confusing ordering process. But they also scanned color film as B&W. And there's a lot of dust on the film. But they seem to have a monopoly on the market, So don't know who else to use read more

Hands down, probably the worst service I've ever received. I'm actually so shocked by how unprofessional this person who was working the front desk was. Here's what happened: I went to go open the door and, like an idiot, I pulled instead of pushed. It was my fault for not trying the other way, but I was having an off day and somehow didn't even try the other way. I tried it twice and then stood there for a good 45 seconds like an idiot. So I called and said the door was locked, and the guy on the phone said "did you try pushing it". I immediately went in and laughed about it. The guy had no reaction and went back to his work.I notice that the front door is see through reflective glass. So he basically sat at his desk, and watched me outside trying to come in and not being able to figure it out. Keep in mind, the front desk is 5 feet from the front door with a clear view. Instead of opening the door and offering to help, he sat there and watched me outside trying to get in. Now, I don't know much about how the film works, so I just wanted to ask how much a roll of film would be and how it would work with my super 8. I genuinely believe he did not make eye contact with me during my entire encounter with him. When I was asking him questions, he would barely answer and was too busy doing something else and writing stuff down. He didn't even give me the time of day. The only time he helped at all was when he showed me something on the camera, which I appreciated. But when I was obviously trying to figure out what to do and how it works, he was no help and didn't try to offer his knowledge. In fact, sometimes I would ask him a simple question and his response would be delayed since his eyes were glued to a computer screen. 0/10 do not recommend this place, he basically made me never wanna shoot on my camera. I don't care how unfamiliar I am with this whole film process, it's the employees job to help any customer. I am so upset with how I was treated and I left feeling very stupid and discouraged. I mean it REALLY sucks that this place is the premiere last surviving, 8mm place in town. If anyone has any other good recommendations, PLEASE let me know. Let me just start by saying I LOVE film, so any time we get to shoot on it, I'm so happy. From the very beginning this place seemed awesome, and almost every person I worked with was super helpful. I purchased my film from here, shot what we needed, had our telecine and was about to leave a happy customer when, I met the dragon lady. I just want to say that I think the dragon lady is the boss so I want to first tell her how lucky she is for having such wonderful, loyal employees. It's really the only thing you have going for you: Miss (I'll go ahead and assume you aren't married) Dragon. One of her color timers and I were just finishing a session. I told him that I had recently purchased a great looking 8mm camera on Ebay and wondered if he could take a look at it. I bring the camera in, and flames appeared from the back of the room. This slithery tongue and pointy tail swiftly intervened my interaction with the colorist. Just imagine the SNL character, Sherry O'Terri (as a dragon) Dragon: "What is this?! We don't support these cameras here, so thank you, and goodbye" Me: (thinking she must think I am a "walk-in" certainly not a client) Oh I'm sorry, your colorist told me he could take a look at this for me. We just finished our session, (all smiles)" Dragon: "Well we don't support those here, and this guy isn't a technician. So I'm really sorry. We can't help you." (Granted I had just shelled up - over a grand on services and stock from this company.) Me: uh... oookkaaayyy.. (At this time another very nice man, comes to the rescue. He must have seen her gnarly flames exploding rom the back of the room.) Nice Man: "I am so sorry, I am the technician here. How can I help you." Here's were things get nuts: Dragon lady starts freaking out, that they would be helping me with a camera THAT THEY DON'T SELL. She kept saying over and over, we don't sell this, we can't support this, on and on. THEN, She dumps it upside down and takes out the batteries and slams them on the table, saying to Nice Man, "See YOU don't even know where the batteries are!" Not just as a client, but as a human being, I have never been treated like this. The service from everyone else was excellent and I feel sorry for them. If anyone out there needs GREAT employees at a processing, transfer house, stock, etc. You should come in and steal some of these guys from Dragon Lady. Sorry Dragon Lady. I don't care if you guys are one of the last standing 8mm processing houses in LA. I'll ship it to NY next time, if I have to. I am NEVER coming here again. read more

I was curious about shooting on 8mm, Pro8mm was extremely helpful diagnosing the issue with my camera. When i decided to shoot a film, they helped me pick the best stock to shoot in, walked me through the processing options and made the whole thing extremely easy. Poor customer service. Use at your own risk. I produced & shot a promo for a client who requested super8. I'm a fan of shooting film and was very excited to shoot super8 with Pro8mm's 16x9 camera and use both reversal and negative film stocks. When a friend tried to convince me to just shoot digital and add a super8 look in post, I responded with all the artistic arguments for shooting film and specifically super8. We shot 12 rolls of an event with a package from Pro8mm that we cannot reshoot and almost all of the footage is no good due to a mechanical problem that Pro8mm can't explain. The camera prepped and returned in working order, and the problem only appeared in the transfer. Phil says he's never seen this problem before, but was able to duplicate the issue at the shop. One of those things I guess, but hard to swallow when it's your project. Needless to say my client is furious. Sh*t happens as they say, but good companies define themselves by how they fix problems. Pro8mm refunded the cost of the package, but were unwilling to offer anything beyond that to make things right. When I suggested that a credit towards a future project would bring me back to hopefully have a positive experience, Phil gave me the "if I do this for you I would have to do this for everyone" line. Of course they can't be liable for production costs and random mishaps, but when a problem is so clearly their fault it's surprising that they don't care to go beyond the bare minimum. So unfortunately I'm here to warn anyone to use Pro8mm at your own risk. When things go well, it's great. When things go wrong, it's your problem. Pro8mm does as good a job scanning your movie film to digital as anyone in the country, and maybe world-wide. If you have any special need, just write to Rhonda Vigeant or Phil Vigeant, or talk to them by phone. They can walk you through whatever you are trying to do and help you get the results you want. They have shown themselves to be extremely personable and patient, even with someone as picky about image quality as I am! SUGGESTION: If you request a "flat" scan, be sure you do color correct it, or have someone help you do this with your editing program. Then you MUST be sure to use a modest amount of a "Sharpen" feature. If you do this, all the details will burst out. But ... you have to actually DO it! If you think some of the Online movie samples by Pro8 look flat and fuzzy, it's because most people do not do this final image refinement. Prom8mm = Recommended! read more

Nostalgia. This was one of the first places I visited when I moved to California. A literal one stop shop, for amateurs and industry professionals alike, for any 8mm and Super 8mm film needs. They have a wide selection of super 8mm stocks, including their own super 8mm film stock cut down from color 35mm negative. Amazing image quality, for super 8. Their developing times and costs are very reasonable and last time I was there they offered me a student discount! Very cool. I think they also offer telecine transfer services of your footage from 8mm to whatever format you want (DV, beta, etc.) for a price, but you're better off going to Yale Labs and getting their prices. The markup on Kodak film stock is a little high, when compared to picking it up directly at the Kodak factory in Hollywood, but I think the drive alone evens out the price difference. Ask the staff anything. They're all on point with their knowledge and will be more than happy to help you out. Put down that DV camera, dig that old Super 8 camera out of the attic, and spend a few bucks on a great film making experience. You'll never forget it. read more

COVID-19 protocols kept me from browsing on-site as long as I would have, because I plan to buy my next Super 8 cartridges with their pre-paid process/scan package. Before developing our Super 8 film i specifically called to check that we would receive it within 15 days, as after that we had flights back home to New Zealand. I received confirmation that it would be there within 15 days, but it wasn´t. We were hugely disapointed, so i contacted Rhonda and explained that since the order had arrived too late, we would need the film sent to us digitally. She said that since it was thanksgiving she would not be able to do it immediately (which was fine with me!) but she also stated that we would have to pay full price for it, even though it was their fault that we didn´t receive it. (Keeping in mind that this is one of the more expensive places to develop Super 8 footage in the US, so i was absolutely not happy to pay another extortionate amount on top of that). When i requested that they send it to us digitally free of charge, i simply never heard back from her again. It´s been 2 months now, and still no word. Absolutely terrible service, so i would advise you NOT to use this company. Hugely disapointing service, and disrespectful people. read more

What's with all of these haters? I'm just a regular customer, and I'd recommend them any day. I don't know anybody who works here, I came to them because they are one of the few (if only) vendors in world who offer HD transfers of 8mm film to a variety of media and codecs. I was amazed at how good the film looks at 1080p! Save some money and buy their film, process, telecine packages (I wish we had done that). Yes, it was SUPER expensive, but the transfer was on a different level than what we had gotten from Yale. Nothing against them, but SD cannot compete with HD! They were also kind enough to dissuade us from spending the extra money on Uncompressed HD and convinced me that ProRes was the way to go... Philip Vigeant did a wonderful job and was a pleasure to spend some time getting to know. We did a supervised transfer straight to hard drive at ProRes422 @ 1080/24p. I can't wait to shoot some more Super 8! read more

I paid $250 dollars per roll (Yes you heard that right) to have two super 8 rolls same day processed in order to meet a client deadline. That is $500 just to have the film expedited. I dropped off both rolls on a Thursday and only received one roll back on Friday. It is now Monday afternoon and still have not received the second roll. I called the store and they said that ektachrome can take a bit longer to process, but it blows my mind that they advertise one day expected services for ektachrome if that is not the case. Super unhappy with their misleading advertising and price surcharges. They will nickel and dime you for everything, including an internet upload surcharge of 80 dollars for a Prores 422 file....a Prores 422 HQ file is double that price. Don't even bother getting your film scanned there, as they will charge you a RIDICULOUS fee of $126 to do a 4K scan. Don't even bother, have them send your processed film to Nicholas Coyle in Colorado who does same day, 6K scans for $20 per roll with a free Prores 422 HQ internet upload. Absolutely outraged that its cost me $960 to have two super 8 rolls "same day" expedited processed, a 4K scan, and an internet Prores 422 upload. Avoid at all costs. read more

First things first. Philip Vigeant, the owner is an amazing guy with heaps of knowledge about all things super-8 and beyond. I just wish the workers there were nicer and more passionate about super 8. They seem to care less. It's a shame. That said, the positives: amazing transfers! one of the only places that widens super 8 gates (exorbitantly expensive with no student discounts!), they have amazing stocks of film, film includes great processing, it's an all in one shop, they work with Hollywood studios, unique services & research, they're always ahead of the curve with new stocks and feautures, and they DON'T CENSOR FILM like Yale does.. NEGS: Prices HIGH, no discount sales, bored sales staff, and they close at 5 and no weekend hours. read more

Been a while since I've been here, but the last time I took a daylight load of 16mm to have them process and it was fine. The price was great. It's $20 for 100' now, at the time I only paid $15. Still cheap though. I can only review for film processing. read more

They always develop my film in a nice and timely manner. However I recently dropped off film that I marked to be recycled (my fault), I changed my mind and called and asked for them to instead ship it back to me. They said they could and sent me the invoice for shipping which I paid for, I was told it would be shipped back to me, they got my address and info and all that. Fast forward three weeks and I have no updates on the shipping. I call and am put on hold for 25 minutes before the call is dropped. I call back and they say "oh we must've recycled it so we're looking for it right now, we'll ship it out as soon as we find it." I week and a half goes by with no updates and no contact. I call again, get put on hold for another 15 minutes and when they pick up they say, "we're still looking for it, once we've looked I'll call you back in 5 minutes" 40 minutes later, no phone call, just an email that basically says "we recycled your film like it originally said so looks like you can't have it sorry!" look I get what I originally said and that's totally on me but why waste my time and money when you could've just told me off the bat. Honestly would they have even told me or refunded me if I didn't call several times? Who knows. read more

Look, I won't lie, we had our differences in the customer service department here as other reviews mentioned, so I can't deny that I understand those reviewers, but at the end of the day when you leave the shop you were there to buy top quality film, cameras, and processing, and their products are incredible; it overshadows the other things other reviewers have mentioned. Hollywood can be a very impersonal place some times with so many fake people who don't mean what they say. But Rhonda and Phil who run Pro 8mm are the complete opposite. Warm, smart, intelligent and caring people who always work their best to educate and help filmmakers. I have created projects there since 2003 for Paris Hilton, Smashbox Cosmetics, Chrome Hearts and Chase Bank. I love this place and keep going back and will continue to. I sent in two rolls of film that contained all of the footage from my wedding and my honeymoon. I prepaid for the processing for both and mailed them in. After 3 weeks of hearing nothing, I received an email from a random man saying he had received one of my film rolls in the mail, in an envelope marked with my email and address. The roll had not been processed, and the second roll was MIA. After calling today, Pro8mm told me they had no record of receiving my film, and that they had no idea where the second roll could have gone. Not only did they lose footage of the most important week of my life, but I wasted my money on processing fees only to receive 1/2 original rolls back after the random man was kind enough to mail it to me. I never received a digital copy. Horrible customer service, rude employees, and extremely disappointing care for film that can never be replaced. One of the best days of my life is forever tainted because this company lost my footage of it. Do not trust them with your business! If you care about your film and memories at all, take them anywhere else to be processed. read more

The staff at Pro8mm are rude, unhelpful, and in general not knowledgeable about the products they sell. I understand that film, especially Super8 can be unpredictable. The first time I purchased film from Pro8mm I brought Kodak film I had shot in the past and they sold me what they claimed was the same film packaged with their Pro8mm label. I told them I had shot this film outdoors in the past and they recommended the stock they sold to me for outdoor use. I even brought my camera with me. It's a simple Super8 Minolta. I took the film with me on a special trip and it all came back black. It was expensive, frustrating, and disheartening to have the film come back completely underexposed. I wrote about the issue here on Yelp and was immediately contacted by a staff member at Pro8mm who apologized and gave me some free film and processing. This was nice and generous of them, so I removed my 1 star review and decided to give them a chance. A year later I went back with a new project. I explained to a woman on staff exactly what I was interested in doing. I wanted to purchase all of their color stock for indoor use and test each one to see what I liked the best. I shot the same exact thing with 4 different stocks. When I took the film back for processing, the same woman filled my order. I told her what I was doing again - testing each stock. When I returned to pick up my order I found that they had put all 4 stocks on the SAME single spool, and they gave me ONE file. I couldn't determine which stock was which. They did not label the film they processed or separate each cartridge onto a separate digital file. They were unable to watch the video to help me determine which stock was which. This was a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. I was furious. The woman who had been "helping" me told me I should have thrown up a card at the beginning and end of each film for labeling purposes. She was right. I should have. I would have done this had I known they would spool my rolls together and digitize on 1 file. She was really rude and mean to me when I addressed why this was an issue. This seems like total laziness on their behalf. I can imagine this is a consistent problem. When I lived in NYC, the film processor always processed my cartridges individually and gave me back the plastic cover so I knew what it was. The quality of their processing and color was also far superior to Pro8mm. The company that digitized my film always made separate files for each spool. I have been a member of the Yelp community for many years and I usually give good review (check out my profile). I want to like this family-run business but I really feel like they do not care about what they do here. They are not filmmakers, or artists, or even good technicians, and therefore they will not be able to guide you through the process of buying the right film, shooting Super8, or making decisions about how to process. There aren't many choices left for Super8, so this makes me sad. I would definitely go elsewhere, even take the time to use companies outside of Los Angeles to get the care and quality you need. read more

SUPER DISAPPOINTED. The first time I called to check the status of my order, (they never confirmed that my 8mm tape was received) a guy said that it was received and it should take around a week 1/2 for it to be ready. I said no problem. A week 1/2 later I called to get an update and a lady said "it's developed but you haven't paid for the scanning". That was weird to me because I've sent emails of my receipt stating I paid for everything plus the shipping. I was so excited to get the film back that I paid again to get it scanned. I call the NEXT day and a lady said "it should be there by Friday" (today). I call this morning and a lady said "it's going to be shipped today". 6 hours later I call again to make sure it was shipped and a lady says "oh the film broke when you were recording so there was nothing to scan" I know nothing about developing film BUT AT WHAT POINT DO YOU KNOW THAT IT CANT BE DEVELOPED OR SCANNED AND WHEN WHERE YOU GOING TO LET ME KNOW! Had I not called I don't know when I would have ever heard from them! Thank you guys so much for wasting my time and money. I will never use you again! read more

I returned a call that I had missed and when they found the person that called the lady got on the phone and the very first thing said wasn't "hello" or "how can I help you?" it was "I didn't leave a message to have you call back." We bought a roll of film and processing for $30 at Cinegear 10 days ago. We filled out a form giving them our credit card info and they told us they would send us an invoice via email. They never did. After numerous calls and being given the run around, Kris told us that she had just ran the credit card. It was a lie. As of right now, no charge and no invoice. So now I'm stuck with a roll of film I have to process somewhere else. I'm sure they'll charge us the $30 right after I send it for processing at another place, but eating the cost is a far better option than having to deal with them ever again. Save yourself the headache and go to Yale or some other place. read more

I've never been treated so bad like in this place. I went there to do a simple develop and transfer on dvd of 2 rolls of 8mm film. 270 dollars just for that. I accidentally left my credit card there and I thought I lost it. I called them to know if I left it there, but they were already closed. I blocked my card. They called me the next day to let me know that the footage was ready. I went there and with a big smile they said " By the way you left your card here ". Well... thank you for calling me and letting me know !!! Since it was a camera test and I wasn't sure if the camera would have worked I specified to the guy that if the footage would have been too dark and useless he shouldn't have done the EXPENSIVE transfer to dvd. He didn't give a .... and with his big smile he said " well... the sun came out... you can't see the subject or the location but the sun is clear... by the way I think your camera has a shutter problem". I don't know what you guys would have done in my shoes... but I was about to freak out and I had to leave otherwise I would have got arrested for sure. I don't suggest to go here. I will always talk negative about this place. Sorry but It was the worst service I've ever had. read more
