He and his workers did an excellent job installing flooring and painting in some rooms, redid a fireplace, and finished my garage. Michael and his team completed a gut renovation of my Manhattan Co-op. Specifically, this included…read morecompletely redone kitchen, bathroom, closets, living space, etc. I performed an exhaustive search for the right contractor and Michael exceeded all the others by far. Here is why: 1. He has a background as an engineer and is keenly focused on precision, taking immense pride in his projects. This means everything is measured to the T and the work is tastefully done. You really want someone with a sharp eye for the details and that was evident throughout the project. For example, Michael spent an entire day taking me on tours of his other projects (with permission from his other clients of course). This way I could see his work up close and also gather ideas for my own project. I particularly liked a radiator cover I saw at one place, and Michael custom designed two for me as well. (Pics attached) 2. He has integrity and remains accountable even after the last bill is paid - also every additional cost is communicated in advance so you can approve or discuss. No surprises with Michael. For example, after the project was over, I had moved in, and Michael had moved onto another project, I noticed a small crack in the crown molding that Michael and his team had installed. This was due to the intense heat in the apartment as the radiators cranked up for the winter months, with temps exceeding 80 degrees. As soon as I let Michael know, he came back within the same week and addressed the problem at no extra charge. I thanked him for coming and he said "no need to thank me, it is our obligation." There are so many more examples and to me, that is an impressive level of integrity in a tough business, and shows how much Michael cares deeply about the outcome of his projects. 3. He is in constant communication. I am very hands-on and used WhatsApp to communicate with Michael and his team on a daily basis. For example, I couldn't be there to pick out the grout to be used in the bathroom tiling, but had an idea that I wanted it to match with the grey tile on the bathroom floor. Before purchasing and applying, Dan (Michael's son) sent me a WhatsApp message with a picture of the grout they suggested for purchase next to a sample of the tile that was used for the bathroom floor. I was able to make the decision while from my desk at work. Depending on how involved you want to be, the team definitely accommodates. This way you can view the progress on a daily basis and be involved in as many decisions as you want to be. 4. It's a family business. Michael has brought his wife (Jenny) and his son (Dan) into the business. They are a close knit team and tirelessly together to make sure the job gets done. Each of them have unique strengths that they bring to the table and, to me, this personal touch just made the experience that much better because I had the assurance that everyone was always on the same page and always communicating. 5. He takes you shopping. One Saturday, Michael took me shopping to help me decide on all of the materials. I did not have to buy on that day, but I ended up picking out almost everything because the prices at the places he brought me could not be beat, not to mention the options were plentiful. I had used Pinterest to build a concept and this helped guide me throughout the day. With Michael's help, I ended up selecting: all bathroom and kitchen tiles, subway tiles, granite countertops, kitchen sink, kitchen appliances (fridge, range, microwave, dishwasher), air conditioner, kitchen cabinets, bathroom sink and mirror). Some other things like the toilet, light fixtures and door handles I purchased off Wayfair. But it was such a relief to get the main things done. In August 2017 we hired Whitestone Contracting to do a complete renovation of our kitchen and…read moremaster bathroom. Our COOP required a number of permits and insurances to do the work in the building and Rene was able to provide all of them. Upon completion of the project we experienced a problem with the construction of the bathroom floor. The tile floor was put in a full inch and a half below the toilet flange. This gross oversight that made it impossible to install a toilet. It cost me an additional $700 to bring in a plumber to repair their mishap! A year and a half later in February 2019 we began to experience a number of problems with the tiles that were installed in the bathroom. The tiles in the shower wall where the fixtures are located began sinking into the wall. There were also a number of tiles on the adjoining walls that were becoming loose. The grout in between these tiles began falling out. I was concerned that the water from the shower would get behind the tiles and we would experience mold! I contacted Rene and he came to inspect the work that was done in the shower. He had no explanation of how this could have happened. It was quite obvious though, the workers didn't use nearly enough cement to adhere the tiles to the newly constructed walls. A cost cutting short cut for sure! A date was set to make the repairs. Since I did not have any leftover tiles he asked me to procure some more tiles and he would reimburse me. I stayed home from work while they made the repairs. It was a good thing I did because I found the workers trying to reattach tiles that were chipped. I pointed this out to them and they recut them before being installed. About 7 months later we began finding a whole new batch of tiles in the bathroom coming loose. After several weeks of reaching out to Whitestone I received a number of excuses why they were unavailable to come back again to do more repairs. I remained persistent and continued to call, in order to hold them to task. We finally set a date and they were actually very helpful. They even took it upon themselves to pick up the tiles and provided all supplies. I regret not being able to be home that day from work to oversee what was going on. Even though the tiles seemed firmly affixed several of the tiles installed are chipped and uneven. At the end of the day we are stuck with a job that shows a complete lack of attention to detail and workmanship. In the days that followed I sent a number of texts and emails to try to get an explanation of the unsatisfactory work. I only received a text from Rob saying how he was sorry and would address it with his guys on Monday and that he would call me. I never received any call. In addition, I was never reimbursed for the tiles I had to pick up from the first repair. After two years of living with Whitestone's lack of professionalism I am left feeling like my only recourse would be to pursue this in small claims court. As the pictures show for the thousands of dollars we paid for our bathroom this is not an example of a professional installation. Based on my terrible experience it would behoove you to stay away from these guys.
