I attended Product School's Product Management Course in NYC and really enjoyed it. I come from a consulting background where I have had some experience working as a Product Owner for clients and wanted to figure out how to transition into a true Product Manager role. The course covered every aspect of Product Management from understanding a company's context and goals, identifying new product opportunities and validating them using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, how to bring ideas to life via the product development lifecycle, and how to effectively market a product. The course goes into the right level of detail for you to understand all the potential responsibilities of a Product Manager at different companies. The last week also focuses on the PM Job search process, which I found to be super helpful. Throughout the course you pick a company of interest to you and propose a new product feature or idea. All of the homework assignments build on each other and help you with your final project of presenting the product idea to the class. Outside of class, I would estimate that the homework assignments took me about 6 hours (on average). Alex V., my instructor, was incredibly helpful and professional throughout the entire course. She offered a unique perspective on Product Management, as she has experience as a PM at a large company as well as an early stage start-up. She made herself available outside of class to answer any questions about homework assignments, final project ideas, and the job-search process. This is definitely a great course to take if you are looking to understand the role of a PM better, get a feel for what it takes to be a successful PM, meet a lot of smart, like-minded people, and eventually transition into Product Management! read more

I absolutely loved this course. I joined this course in May 2020 and in this last two months period I got one new perspective for Product Management career. Even though I have not attempted any interviews yet but now I know how to prepare for the interviews, what all materials I should read, a new angle of preparation. The take away for me from this course was to see if I can transition to Product Management career. I was able to get a good gauge what it takes to be a product manager from the structured curriculum. My instructor was Teesh Yalamanchili who was very involved during the class session right from the first class. He made the class more like a dialogue between the students and him. He was detailed in giving feedback for the in-class assignments or explaining the industry standards which are current. I enjoyed his class and did not mind coming at 9am on a Saturday morning. As a lead Business Analyst in a cross-functional team at an Insurance firm, I believe lot of my daily job duties are that of a Product Manager. I listen to podcasts about PM to develop some skills and techniques that I can apply within the team and Product School is one of the content creators I follow. This summer, as I was looking to transition into a PM role, I was looking around for resources and a 2-month course just for that sounded too good to be true. As a natural skeptic I followed up with couple of alumni of the course who only had positive feedback for the course and I enrolled to the June-July Silicon Valley product management course. What did I want from the course? - Frameworks and applications - How to go about job search and interviews And that is exactly what I got out of the course! Sameer Mehta, Sr. Director PM at Citrix was the instructor and he did a wonderful job during this 8-week period. As a person who transitioned from engineering to product, his personal experience resonated with a lot of us. He shared lot of his personal experiences both during his transition days, how he initially handled the PM role and what he does now. He set the right expectation of what we should expect from the class and what we can get out of the class. The course syllabus was well structured - go through different stages of a product development lifecycle from Identify to Plan, Design and Develop through Launch and growth. Sameer had his personal experience to draw from and explain in-depth what the general framework is and how he/ his team applies these concepts on the job. One of the things I think PS can do better is to structure the classes with more time to work on some of the class activities. The class activities were good to understand the concepts of product management, collaboration and presentation. As a bonus, Sameer was also able to bring some of his PM friends as guest speakers and it was interesting and inspirational to listen to each one of their journeys and get a sense of what worked and what didn't. Overall, I have a very positive feedback of the course and Sameer and to anyone looking to transition into PM, this course will be a good start with a caveat that have the right (reasonable) expectation from the course. I attended Product School at Silicon Valley from 03/03/2020 - 04/23/2020. I am a Product Manager (PM) currently in a medical device company that has a suite of digital products. Through Product School, I was looking to learn two things - 1. Tools and methodologies that can be applied to manage the development of software products 2. Soft skills that are critical for a PM's success Syllabus - The syllabus covered everything I was expecting to learn with respect to tools and methodologies, which was great! However, I was struggling to find content related to soft skills especially around leadership skills, negotiating skills and strategic thinking. The first 5 weeks of the course was dense and thorough - lots to learn! However, the last 3 weeks with respect to content itself was disappointing. A lot of time was spent on presentations and public speaking which wasn't necessarily what I was looking for, but I understand that it may have been important to others. Instructor - Our instructor's name was Varun Bakhru. Varun has had over 10 years of Product Management experience at eBay and Salesforce which clearly reflected in his teaching. Varun made sure he covered the Product School content but also added in his own examples and exercises that made the course so much more fun and interesting! All his examples were from personal experiences and all his exercises were real life situations that PMs go through on a daily basis - which was what got me excited to go to class every week! After I mentioned to Varun about my interest in learning more about soft skills, he made us go through some exercises that required us to reflect upon those skills - I really appreciated that. Overall Varun's knowledge, energy and teaching methodology elevated my experience at Product School. Recommendation I would recommend Product School to folks who know that they want to be a PM (currently in a different function) or who want to learn how product management is done in a tech industry. If you're not sure about being a PM, I wouldn't spend $5k on this course. Go figure that out, and then enroll here to learn more! Overall a great experience! I took PS during the Summer this year from June to August. I had previous experience working with product and had experience working in a tech startup prior to this experience. What I found to be most helpful about this school was it gave me a way to formalize my experience with Product, pick the brain of my teacher (Jeremy who was AMAZING) and make a few friends along the way. All in all my major takeaways are this: If you have had no prior experience in product or a product facing role, and would like a chance to have a program walk you through the steps of what it takes to become a succesfull PM, this course is for you. If you have had experience and are instead looking for something a little more technical and in-depth, this may not be a fit for you. I took the PM course at Product School and our instructor was Mala Rajendran. She brings with her an immense energy and lot of professional experience as a PM. She gave us lot of real world examples and how to deal with obstacles and keep the engine running as a PM. The cohort was amazing and everyone took part in discussions and showed great passion with the presentations. It was a mix of various levels of experienced students with few already working as a PM. This is a good course for those who want to venture into PM roles. 1 star less for PS to work on their shortcoming (course materials, more case studies). Some Qualitative KPIs from my experience: Instructor (5 Star): I had a really good instructor, Yenyi Fu a Director from a top tech travel company. She was very approachable to get feedbacks and was honest with her reviews. She had a deep product experience and sense. Curriculum (4 Star): I believe a real data for PRDs and presentation were missing. It may be helpful if the course has some tie-ups with startups for live projects. By this way, students will also feel motivated to see their projects are making an impact. There should be more deep dive into framework etc. Mock Interviews (4 Star): 1 session is too less if you have 12 students in a class. If you are planning to enroll for PS, it's really important to understand the background of your instructors. I completed the Accelerated Product Management course through Product School over a 5 day period. Prior to applying to product school, I had no practical knowledge of the best practices of the product management discipline. Through most touch points, Product School provides great customer service. My representative was very diligent about following up with me and making the process less intimidating than I expected. Over the actual product of Product School is great. The Accelerated Product Management course load is a lot to digest. But, my instructor was very helpful in explaining concepts and breaking the information into chewable pieces. In the course you cover the gamut of topics! I recently completed the 8-hour Software Product Management course at Product School (Silicon Valley campus). My instructor was Vivek Sundaram. Prior to this course, I have completed reading two product management books. Coming from a non-tech background, even though I'm fast in learning, a lot of the concepts I learned from the books stayed in the book. Attending the Product School gave me 3 things: (1) contexts of how to apply the concepts, (2) lots of great examples shared by the instructor and classmates (mostly from tech background), and (3) in-class exercises (small group project) that enable to practice the techniques we learned with peers and learn from each other. We ended the course with resume review and mock interviews on a variety of questions. It was very helpful. The Product Book published by Product School was a very good read as well. It is precise and clear with concrete examples. The book itself surely guided me for leading my tech startup. Special thanks to my instructor Vivek Sundaram. He has many years of solid experience in product management from big tech companies. He was friendly, helpful, fast in thinking, and keen on sharing. Value for money: 80% The course started with vigorously teaching a lot of materials for the first couple weeks. It felt great and I thought it was a great value for money! But then it went slower after the first few weeks and not much knowledge that was covered later required classroom teaching specifically. I didn't feel it as value-added as it appeared at the beginning. Glad the last class ended on a high note with career-focused advice and practice. Value for money: 80%. It will be a 100% if I land a PM job. I'll report that later ;) Area of improvement: Product School could definitely do better with their administration, organization, and logistics. E.g. Make sure the classroom is ready and on time. / One comment for their event and/or Facebook team: It'd be great if you can improve the quality of your Facebook Live video (e.g. provide SlideShare in advance because people commented every time about slides were blurry) Lastly, access to the events online can definitely be easier and more straight-forward. Information is all over the place on Slack, Facebook page, Youtube, Product School website... I had a hard time to locate the event every single time. Perhaps that is to quiz my PM skill. I first stumbled upon Product School when I attended a Lean Product & Lean UX Silicon Valley meetup. Carlos, the CEO of Product School, was one of the speakers at the session. During the informative session, he told us the first 10 people to email him will get a free resume review. Of course, I obliged and that's when my interest for the school began. I'm currently a Product Manager, but I felt there were some skill sets I was lacking and wanted to get professional instruction on. The only option at the time was General Assembly, but we're talking about a $10,000 course. Waaaaaaaaay out of my price range. Being a natural skeptic, I did my own homework on the school by attending the info session and happy hours where I pretty much grilled the instructors and current students. All gave generally positive and real answers so I decided to give it a shot. In fact, I also learned that Carlos used to be a Lead Instructor at General Assembly. So I gave it a shot, I won't give you full on details, but I give a high-level synopsis of what to expect. It's an 8 week course that meets on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:30-9pm. The first couple of classes are general overviews of what Product Management is, for those that aren't as familiar. Then it starts ramping up. Rather than just sitting thru lectures, you're forced into group exercises that test your knowledge of the frameworks and processes you learn each week. Homework is due every week so you also have accountability to get things done. One thing I will emphasize is, the MORE you put into your homework, the MORE you'll get out of it. I mean, its not as expensive as General Assembly, but you're still paying a decent amount for it so get your moneys worth! Later classes cover UX as well as the best tools to use to be a PM. I've been using Balsamiq this whole time for Wireframing and it wasn't until this class that I built prototypes in Invision. You'll also learn a LOT of frameworks, and you'll start to change how you think about solving problems. Rather than trying to come up with the solution to a problem off the bat, you'll learn a framework as to how to arrive at the answer naturally.I highly suggest setting up a Pinterest page and pinning all the great stuff out there. The overall format is that each topic and exercise you go thru each week, will culminate into your Final Presentation, the representation of all the knowledge retained thru the course. You're tasked with choosing a product or feature, and presenting the whole flow on how you came about identifying the need, research, your wireframe/prototype, key metrics to validate the feature/product and the Go to Market strategy. This presentation can also be added to your portfolio and be used in future job interviews. I enrolled for an 8 week part-time Product Management Certificate and attended the first-week session but decided to withdraw from the course. Just keep in mind, they are very unsupportive (although understandable) when a student wants to withdraw. And it goes against fundamental ethics in Product Management. My advice to anyone wanting to enroll for any of the Product School Courses is Do your research very well before paying the tuition amount. I mean really well. Most of the reviews here are written by students who are made to write reviews after 2nd week and final week class. Topics taught in the course doesn't get you the job, not even a call if you are trying to transition into PM. Knowing concepts and a mock project is just like reading a book on swimming and mock project is your bath-tub. I withdraw from the course because, I strongly feel, this course makes more impact when you just transitioned to APM/PM Role from your current role or from school. Everyone in class got first hand practices with presentations, resumes reviews, participated and evaluated mock interviews, and practiced and evaluated design and estimation assessments. (NETWORKING) This is a great place to network with others who share the same passion. Our instructor Yenyi Fu is the Director of Product Management from Tripadvisor who brought practical industry experience and wisdom. Where else can you spend 40 hours (over 8 weeks) with a PM veteran willing to help you learn? Even in an actual work environment, one may not feel safe or appropriate to freely ask any product or any career questions. She demonstrated many of the great PM qualities: leadership, openness to ideas, and great relationship skills on making everyone feel collaborative but guided. Overall I'm very happy to have spent 8 weeks learning from and making new friends with the same passion. Suggestions for Product School: (1) More "real-life" case studies - It would be great if we can learn from the network of the many instructors real-life experience. If we can try tackling their real-life examples, it would give us more hands-on experience to learn and "fail." (2) B2B vs. B2C product management - There are many nuances with the two disciplines, more information would help guide us choose wisely and understand how to get from B2B to B2C or vice versa. (3) Beyond basics - since everyone has different level of understanding/ experiences in aspects of product management, it would be great to provide "bonus points" questions or exercises and additional references for some of us who want to learn beyond the basics. read more

What do undergraduate/graduate programs teach you about product management? Answer: nothing. So how does one become a product manager? Answer: unless you're already a PM, you have to get lucky, and break into the role with your existing company. Or alternatively, you can start your own company and learn on the fly. A pretty daunting proposition, to say the least. Some companies are getting smarter, and grooming associate/junior PM's early. But for the most part, there is really NO training out there on how to become a product manager. And school doesn't prepare you for it either. Product School is trying to change the game. It's a modern day, mini boot camp style trade school just for product managers. As an entrepreneur, I already had a grasp of how to rapidly prototype a product, spec it out, and launch. But I wanted to take their course to see if I could fill in some knowledge gaps. It was an eye opener, to be sure; we had in-depth conversations ranging anywhere from managing Scrum teams to using PM-centric tools like Trello, Jira and Xtensio. PMing is done differently at every company, and PS's goal is to equip you with the tools to become a solid GENERAL product manager, so you can step into any role and adapt quickly to the job's requirements. Early on, you are forced to reflect on who you are, what you're good at, and weaknesses that you need to shore up if you're to become a competent PM. While there are several mini simulations on things like data analysis and feature ideation, I got the most value out of our individual projects. For your projects, you share your project/work on the big screen with the entire class and explain/defend your thought process. And you're forced to strip down and open yourself up to critical feedback not just from your instructor, but from your peers as well. Definitely humbling, and in a strong way, very indicative of the life of a PM. Overall, I had a blast in the class and met some great people, whom I'll keep in contact with for a long time. Can you learn about many PMing aspects of your own? There are certainly tons of resources out there. But if you're thinking about making the leap into product management, forcing yourself to get into real, simulated work done in an environment with other people, stepping out of your comfort zone, and making some great connections, it's hard to find better value than PS. read more

Projector not working, cables/adapters missing. * Trainers should be trained for training. Initial few weeks, trainer was lost and I was questioning myself - "Am I in right place or did I choose right school"? I was not communicated on trainer till last moment. * More practical sessions need to be added - Make it may be 10 week course. * Quality of training material has to be improved. Still lack of many critical sections. Lastly, consider providing at least water for late evening sessions :-) Folks come directly from work and dont carry water bottles always, it would be nice to have school providing water, light food, notepad-pen to take notes. read more
