One area of improvement would be to give potential customers a detailed breakdown of what services are included in the initial assessment (includes one fungal swab, site visit inspection, and a report) and the additional costs for each sample, swab, etc. beforehand. I called two mold specialists in the area in a panic because my husband was asthmatic and unable to breathe well in our home. Michelle responded first, and she was able to fit us in for a visit 48 hours later. Listed below are the pros/cons of her visit. Pros: 1. She is thorough. Her price is steep (somewhere around $350 which includes one lab test, and an extra $60 for each additional mold swab) but she turned over every corner of our home and located legitimate water sources and mold growth. We would never have noticed some of the spots had she not been so astoundingly thorough. Cons: 1. She found quite a few things that were NOT mold. She insisted a paint streak was mold and strongly urged us to cut exploratory panels out of our ceiling to get the mold treated. A second mold specialist we called in later confirmed that it was indeed paint. 2. Her remediation suggestions were excessive and overwhelming. It was difficult in the days following to sort through her numerous suggestions, which would have amounted to $100k or more. These included patching tiny cracks in the bricks of our entire condo building; tearing up our maple floors and replacing them with Home Depot vinyl; rearranging our washer and dryer setup and boring a hole into our outside wall to accommodate a shorter dryer vent; and replacing all of our cabinets with IKEA cabinets that are easier to clean. We had our dryer vents cleaned that same day (I did appreciate that she had a guy at Dapper Ducts on speed dial and he that came over quickly), then purchased a dehumidifier, replaced furniture that had mold growth, scrubbed and treated walls and floors with concrobium, and dry cleaned our clothes/threw out what couldn't be cleaned. It was still a lot but much less expensive and destructive to our home than what Michelle recommended. 3. She brought someone into our home who we didn't know. After finishing her mold search she called in a friend to go through our home and look for areas to remediate. This was in addition to calling someone from Dapper Ducts to come clean our vents. So her visit turned into three separate home improvement visits. After the DD guy left, her remediation friend came over, walked through very quickly, and left without saying a word. Because I was still processing the mountain of information she was throwing our way, I didn't stop to question why she brought a stranger in to look at our home. I tried to follow up with him by phone but did not get a response. Several weeks later he called and said the remediations (including treating the paint stains that he said were mold) would cost several thousand dollars. I have no idea who this person was, who he works for, or his qualifications; I only know his name was Elvis. It was very unprofessional of Michelle to overload us with information and panic and then call in this random person to look over our home. 4. She may have texted me about ~60 times following her visit, with suggestions for flooring and cabinets. Why she gets 3 stars: In terms of finding mold, she is a maestro. We never would have noticed the things she pointed out, and I'm truly glad she helped us locate the main causes (for us, a backed up dryer vent and not using a dehumidifier, which every basement in DC needs). But she is not a remediation professional, and I thought she crossed some boundaries when trying to "help" us. read more

Giving Michelle a 5 star review is like giving Michael Jordan 5 stars for being a good basketball player. She's extremely thorough and well educated about home water intrusion, among other issues for which she can provide testing. But that's just the start. We've had moisture in our basement for a dozen years or more and had had 3-4 'professionals' out over the years. Two or three were basement waterproofing guys who walked in with their iPad sales presentations and were going to sell me a $15,000 french drain no matter what my problem was. They didn't care about mold. The last guy was a mold inspector who looked at my water-damaged baseboards and carpet tack strips, saying, "it doesn't look too bad." I wasted a lot of years with spores growing in my house because I thought I was overreacting to my concerns about mold. Michelle looked at every aspect of my home that could have been susceptible to water intrusion, from attic to basement ... she thought my damage DID look bad. Her lab results showed several strains of mold on the walls and in the air. During the inspection, she gave numerous actionable fixes we could make to our roof, siding, door molding, outdoor ducts, etc. These weren't even in the places we suspected a mold issue, they were in addition to them, and some did have active mold. We had a roof leak, which led to me seeing some mold on the wet insulation in our attic. Our house was built in 1940 and to be safe I wanted to have a full inspection done. Michelle was the 1st person I called after seeing her reviews. She was able to come the same day.
