I've been to meeting here sponsored by Tech Networks of Boston, Women in Development (fundraising), The Communications Network, Public Relations Society of America, and Third Sector New England. The event space is great, but my one warning is to triple check the microphones with the nonprofit center events staff if you have speakers. About half the times I've been to events there, audio problems occurred, so I always sit in the front to be sure I can hear. I'm jealous of the employees of the nonprofits in this building! Then I came across The NonProfit Center - after my initial inquiry I was contacted by Faisal and literally everything was smooth sailing from there! I took a look at the space and it was perfect, they were available the date I needed, and the price was right. Faisal answered all of my (many) questions and kept in touch to make sure there was nothing else I needed. FFF solicits surplus or leftover food from local restaurants and farmers that would otherwise go to waste. FFF daily delivers this food to the needy people that need it usually within 24 hours of it being donated. FFF is a great nonprofit that does great things. I volunteered here once and helped them build a huge walk in refrigerator. Bravo to this fine local charity.

I can't remember who said it but on the back of all their trucks reads: "When I feed the poor, they call me a saint; When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." More Than Words is a nonprofit bookstore that sells new and used books while supporting young…read morepeople ages 16-24 who are system-involved, including youth from foster care, court-involved backgrounds, housing insecurity, and more. The young people help run the store, learn job skills, and work toward personal and career goals--and it truly shows in the care and pride behind the space. The shop itself is small but mighty. I walked out with four excellent-condition used books (three of which had already been on my TBR list) and somehow also added two cookbooks because... no regrets. Everything was very affordable, and it felt good knowing my purchase was directly supporting youth in the local community. If you're near one of their locations (I believe there's another in the Boston area), I highly recommend stopping in or checking out their online storefront. I stopped into The Well Coffeehouse for an iced coffee, and it was one of the best I've had in a long time. Just enough cream to smooth out the coffee without burying the flavor. No sugar needed. Their house blend had a richness that made me think it would've been just as good served piping hot in a heavy ceramic mug on a rainy morning. The kids ordered hot chocolates and a frozen mocha latte, and all three had the exact same reaction: "This is delicious." That's about as close to a unanimous family endorsement as you're going to get. One thing that really stood out was the young woman working the register. She was incredibly kind and patient while an older gentleman ahead of us got a little overwhelmed by all the modern coffee options. Not once did she rush him or make him feel like he was holding up the line. It's such a small thing, but it says a lot about a place. I also appreciated the mission behind the coffee. The focus on supporting nonprofits and the subtle faith-based atmosphere never felt preachy or performative. It simply gave the shop a warmth that's hard to explain until you're sitting there with a good cup of coffee in your hands. It's tucked away just enough to feel like you've discovered something. A quiet little oasis in a city that's equally famous for lovable cranks and tourists who stop walking the second they hit the sidewalk. Even though I've lived about five miles outside Boston for the past two years, coming into the city still feels like a little vacation. Places like this are a reminder why I keep coming back. I was previously a member of the Junior League of Greenwich, CT and upon relocation to Boston I transferred membership to the JLB; the Boston-based League has a fantastic transfer committee who welcomes new members with open arms. All of the women I've met so far have been kind, open-minded and genuinely passionate about the mission of the Junior League to meaningfully contribute to the Boston community. I would recommend the Junior League to anyone new to Boston who wants to engage in the community and give back through involvement with an organized, effective and well-functioning nonprofit organization.
