We visited Randall Residence looking for memory care for my Father-In-Law at the suggestion of his…read moreneurologist who had been treating him for Alzheimer's for two years and was in the process of revoking his driving privileges. My FIL was willing to move in. We agreed to go on the waiting list that was at least a month long. Within a couple of days word came that there was an opening that we decided to take. This required an evaluation and we were pressured to do it right away so that there was time for an in person evaluation and to retrieve his medical records! If he was in before next Friday he could even avoid the price increase! My wife had to take off work with an hour's notice - it couldn't be scheduled for tomorrow. If you have ever been in the finance office of a car dealership you will have a pretty good picture of what it was like. Anyway the "evaluation" proceeded. Over the course of about 30 minutes the nurses asked him if he needed help doing a bunch of things like bathing and taking his own medicine. He gave an unwavering no to all of these. He didn't need help doing anything. Of course my wife expressed her concern at these answers after the evaluation. The Randall nurses wanted to get records from the GP and neurologist and they would make their evaluation. My wife called the doctors' offices and prepped them to provide the records - there wasn't time to waste. The evaluation came back in a couple days. Good news! He qualified for Independent Living! It's way cheaper! Of course this was still a concern to my wife but she was reassured by the marketing director that it would be easy to transfer to more care if it proved necessary. And again there was that price increase coming and the $1000 initiation fee doesn't need to be paid again to move to the higher levels of care. So we moved him in. A couple days worth of confusion but he was someplace where he didn't need to drive and he liked the food and activities. My wife continued to take him to doctor appointments visiting both the GP and neurologist in the first week he lived at Randall. When asked about providing the records to Randall neither office had records or recollections of any inquiry besides the heads up they got her. Fast forward a couple weeks and my wife got a call on Monday morning from Randall saying that he needed to go to the hospital. To the psych ward. For memory care we asked? No the psychiatric floor. They were looking into finding him a bed anywhere within an hours drive. He was going to need to be evaluated for at least a couple of weeks. So my wife meets with the marketing director to find out what is going on. Apparently he had taken food off of someone else's plate! And then he tried to open the door to the wrong apartment! He NEEDS memory care and they just couldn't accommodate him. They wanted him in a different facility and the sooner the better. It was that or they were going to send him to the psych ward. We moved him on Thursday. So in less than 30 days he was in and out of Randall. He was out the $1000 initiation fee. We were out the effort to move him twice and he was confused about what he had done wrong. "But I like it here?!" A place that was supposed to help and support us and make dealing with Alzheimer's easier had made it worse. I don't know if it was fraud or incompetence that led him to be evaluated as "independent" but neither is a good look. We did have friends mention to us that the seemingly incongruous psych ward recommendation is a tool used to evict patients. Google "patient dumping psych ward". Another reviewer had the same issue. Finally, you should be cautious of putting much weight on the reviews available here or on Randall's web site. While getting ready to write this review I noticed at least 5 (of about twenty) that were posted by employees from cooks to the executive director. There was even one on Randall's own web site from the marketing director's ex-husband. If they are willing to compromise their integrity for a review how can they be trusted to care for your loved one?

Some of the aides are incompetent and should not be working with anyone that is depending on them for their everyday needs. The person in charge of making doctor appointments puts off making them forever. When she finally does make an appointment, she doesn't tell the resident when it is until it's time to leave. There have also been times when she's had an appointment but transportation wasn't arranged so it had to be cancelled. Residents are allowed to keep their TVs on very loud all night long so it's impossible to sleep! Residents are allowed to air their complaints, but nothing is ever done to make things better. I would rather die than live there.

The staff is unfriendly and not very smart about dealing with insurance companies. My relative was ignored and allowed to not shower for days on end. And then there is the administrator, Jill. You will not deal with a more unpleasant individual. She is very arrogant and demeaning. She has also exploited the COVID nonsense to make our experience even more difficult and unpleasant. Believe me, as soon as we can get our relative out of there, we will have him moved in a heartbeat. Avoid this place at all costs unless you really hate your relative you are thinking about admitting here.

Goal of this review: Save others from the nightmare we went through. My father was d/c from…read morehospital to PT/rehab here after an ortho trauma. First realized something was amiss when staff didn't have a WHEELCHAIR available for transfer from car to facility (they had to rummage in a room off of the dining room to find a wheelchair). Also, staff didn't seem prepared for our arrival; we told told we arrived in the middle of shift change. It wouldn't have mattered when we arrived; this facility would never have been prepared. Father was brought to his "room" and we were greeted along the way by other residents asking to use the toilet and roaming the hall like zombies. Facility was clearly understaffed. His room was filthy and smelled strongly of urine. Our feet were actually sticking to floors, likely from urine. The bathroom was in disrepair and appeared unsafe (peeling paint, etc.)He had a [rude] roomie in the room and I immediately noticed the trash container was overflowing with soiled diapers and other likely soiled paper items. The "bed" was more like a foldable cot, not a hospital bed; think wire springs, camp bed. It appeared more like a dorm room with cobbled together furniture than a facility that likely gets funding from Medicare. My mother and I told the CNA?RN? that we would not be leaving Father here. CNA immediately called the flustered admin/director whom tried to coerce us to stay by citing leaving would be against medical orders (AMA) and may void insurance paying for the ortho trauma hospital stay. We later spoke w/ insurance and learned this is false and a tactic SNF admin use to get you to stay. Father returned home w/PT/OT/home health and is doing well. Lessons learned along the way: 1. SNF/rehab facilities are nursing homes that offer rehab 2. Drop in unexpected to a SNF you plan to send your loved one 3. Have a back up plan/call insurance if the SNF is subpar 4. Should you leave SNF AMA, you do not need to return to ED to get readmitted for new SNF placement; call your insurance to ask for new SNF referral. Learned this hard way after 30 hrs in ED. 5. Google reviews of SNFs mean nothing. Highland has a 4 star review, likely boosted by faux reviews left by incentivized staff members, friend of staff, and admin. Instead google "[name of snf] healthcare center violations" https://projects.propublica.org/nursing-homes/homes/h-145508 and you'll find the list of 42 deficiencies this center has amassed. 5. Hospital case manager also gave us a reviewed list of SNF facilities covered by insurance. Highland got higher reviews than most, according to the list. I still don't understand how. Please do not send a loved one here. I don't know how Father would have fared had we left him; he'd likely have an infection at the very least.

Oh but when State came, you wouldn't believe the people that came out of the woodwork to help and to make sure ice was delivered ice water in the morning. And they were wiping the handrails along the walls off when the State was there. We were there for four months and I've never seen that while we were there. My sister was sick and the agency nurse thought that she just had a little virus because of her vomiting. My sister and I took her to the hospital and her potassium was 7.9. That's not a virus. You're making way too much money to misdiagnose residents. She had Black Lives Matter shit on you should be able to
