Please someone help this place modernize or open the concession to an outside organization like Sportime. It's impossible to book a court and no one answers the phone at the front desk. How about switching to an app like Court Reserve? My son was in their Junior program but after 2 years of a mediocre program we moved him to JMTA and wish we had done that from the start. read more

I just started tennis lessons and this is the only place I've been to so I have nothing to compare it to, but I really liked it. The instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable. I learned six different stories and new Tennis vocabulary during a one hour session, and we were given plenty of time to drill and practice what we learned. I think the biggest drawback is that there isn't really a good hour to rent the courts. Seems like a very popular tennis spot and it's pretty much always full and booked. That aside, I'll be back for more lessons and because I love 5 minutes away it's a short walk for an early morning or late evening tennis session. read more

Do you love tennis and not overcrowded courts? Prospect Park was a great option for anyone living in Brooklyn. This tennis center has approximately twice as many well maintained Har-Tru (clay courts) as hard courts. Reading the Yelp reviews, I learned to: 1) Be nice the the elderly gentleman. 2) Pay per hour during the summer. 3) Its possible to book online. After that, everything worked out great! One of my tennis days, I got to rally with a semi pro for 2.5 hours. I won't tell you who won that game. Another day I got to play baseball with our tennis rackets with my beginner friends. This is among the worst-run public resources in New York City. It's a scandal how poorly and indifferently it is managed. The potential of the facility is limitless, based on the size and location. Unfortunately the management has been letting it rot for a decade and the community has sort of just given up and assumed it "has to be this way." The clay courts are horribly maintained - if it rains for a couple hours, the courts are shut down for days. The tennis pros on staff are friendly but aging and (sorry) just not qualified to teach juniors to become high-level players with modern strokes. Parents of kids with any ambition are forced to travel an hour to JMCTC Physically, the tennis center structure is a neglected relic. In fact, they never really bothered to finish it. The website for booking courts is ancient and unusable. The director is actually almost never there - he shows up to hit once in a while with his buddies. It all feels like urban cronyism and politics at its worst. read more

BEST $30 I HAVE EVER SPENT! This was my 1st lesson as an adult. Was only $30 and they have racquets you can borrow for free! Group size was perfect. I learned an incredible amount from Alex in just 1 hour! He is excellent and even though you are in a group I am confident in what I learned and the quality of the lesson. I have played at the Prospect Park Tennis Center for the past 24 years (since I was 8). The center has gone through a massively positive transformation in that time, in large part thanks to the Prospect Park Alliance's stewardship and management. While the courts suffer a bit in the summer (but to play on outdoor exposed clay courts for city permit prices, who can complain?), the center has great value, a nice center and really top notch people and environment. When I first started the courts were convenient and close to home, but they were in bad condition, got little to no maintenance and the clubhouse was just a gross portable trailer that was permanently parked on site. Years ago, the Parks Department kicked out the old operator and brought on the Prospect Park Alliance, who built the new clubhouse and have run the courts since. Since that time the center has been more fun to play at and has launched better programming as well (while still keeping a lot of the old tyme Brooklyn feel, and even many of the longtime coaches). I love this place, its a second home and hopefully always will be. read more

There are, I think, 12 total courts here (10 Har-Tru and two hard). The Har-Tru, or clay, surface feels more forgiving and seems to lend itself to longer rallies. My favorite feature of this tennis center is that you can make court reservations online once you get a user ID after showing your ID at the desk. You can also sidestep buying single-play tickets at the Arsenal or Paragon during the tennis season by purchasing directly at the desk... a nice change from the East River courts and others. read more

Tennis in New York City. Well maintained courts, 11 in all - 9 Har-Tru, 2 hardcourt with a comfortable clubhouse that is open to all. In the summer, the courts are part of the city's system that uses seasonal tennis permit or single-play coupons. In the winter, the Prospect Park Alliance, a nonprofit that helps operate the park, bubbles over the courts and runs the indoor tennis facility with court fees that are very competitive for the city. If you play on weekend mornings, you'll get some complimentary caffeine and bagels to get you ready to play. Year round, Paul Campbell, director fo the Tennis Center, along with the team of tennis pros and staff make this facility a great place to play and learn the game. A great addition is the Special Aces program for kids with disabilities. And if you're not staring at others playing on the courts, look at the clubhouse walls and see some of Paul's art hanging on them - he's an accomplished artist and tennis player. read more

I've been doing weekly drills/doubles matchups here under a program called "Learn and Play" Doubles. It's pretty good. Around 1 hour of forehand, backhand and other skill sharpening drills followed by doubles (occasionally singles) matchups. I've definitely sharpened my skills a lot and the price, $300 for 6 sessions is not unreasonable given the prices to book a court here during the non-outdoor season. The pros/coaches are helpful and fun to work with. The clay courts were a little different than what I'm used to but are well maintained. read more

Love the PP Tennis Center. I have been playing here for much of my life. The staff is excellent and there is a great sense of community there. It's a bit of an oasis, a respite from the wildness of Brooklyn and City living. The fees are quite reasonable and the courts are solid. read more

Not recommended for NYC tennis permit holders who do not want to incur additional fees to be able to play. I went there recently and, after being kicked off an open court, was told the next available time was 8:30-9PM but that my permit would not be enough so I was asked to pay an additional $20 for a half-hour of court time. Apparently the "Prospect Park Alliance" has assumed control of these courts under the guise of "serving the public" when in reality these courts have become a means of earning a living for over 20 tennis pros giving regular lessons on what are supposed to be NYC courts. With 11 courts and 20 pros running the show, I probably should have guessed that my odds of getting onto a court without paying for a lesson or being connected with the "Alliance" were slim. When I challenged the fact that a pro had been using the courts for more than one consecutive hour in violation of the NYC tennis rules & regs, I was told by the head-pro, Paul, how much that pro contributes to the "Alliance" and that, anyway, my permit was only valid during daylight hours, which apparently does not include any time after 7PM during the summer! If you want to play tennis, hold a permit, and don't want to get shaken down to pay for extra fees or lessons, you should probably go elsewhere. read more

The tennis center is a great place for adults to plan tennis. The courts are well maintained and the instructors and very knowledgeable and friendly. For those ten and under, there are better alternatives that are more catered toward kids. It's one of the few places to place tennis in park slope. It is one of the few places to play tennis in Brooklyn. read more

The courts are outside but well maintained. The kids at the front desk are young and courteous. Good guys. The bathrooms and locker rooms are clean and organized. Vending machines are always fully stocked. Great location next to the park. I like this place. I try to come here every time I'm in the city. read more

I am a big fan of PPTC and have been for years. I play there at least once a week and have for years so I've watched it change and become a positive part of Brooklyn. The coaching staff is really special as they really care and take an interest in teaching. My son is involved in the Junior Development program and its the only sport he wants to play. read more

These should not be listed as public courts. The ones available for permit holders (only half of all the courts) are not well maintained with sand and dents on the service line. It is very hard to get courts here because they are taken up by trainers or large groups. Everytime I've tried, I've had to play at 9:00pm. Someone should really review what goes on with parks department and how they run this! I've lived 5 minutes from these courts for 12 years and haven't been able to use them as an avid tennis player should! Shame on them! read more

I have played at PPTC since the "old" days. It has been a pleasure in the last decade as it is now so well run and the facilities have been upgraded. I am able to get on the courts up to 3 times/ week and have used three different instructors all of whom were excellent. My kids learned to play here as well. The staff are hard-working and the space is well maintained. I appreciate that there are lots of different programs as well including one for children with special needs. read more

I'm not sure why these courts are listed on the nyc dept of parks and rec site as being available to nyc tennis permit holders. Went here to play tennis and there were literally no people on any of the 11 courts save for one guy giving a tennis lesson. We were told by someone in a white t-shirt that we could not play on the courts because they were wet and 'unsafe', when we asked why another person was allowed to profit off of a court in the same exact condition we were given some bullshit reason. These are not public courts, they are controlled by something called the Prospect Park Alliance which seems to have the mission of denying permit holders the right to play tennis on public courts. My friend and I have spent 400 dollars combined to obtain permits and were turned away from a virtually empty tennis facility by a very rude man in a white t-shirt. what the fuck? Avoid at all costs, these people are not worth your time and energy. read more

Anyhoo, I dig the adult lessons on Wednesday nights taught by my man Alex - an older gentleman who used to be second seed in Haiti back in the day. He's really nice, he's a good teacher and sometimes you have to just improvise because you don't know what he's saying due to that Haitian accent and street noise. I don't mind - learning from Alex is fun. There are other teachers who are not nice, Mr. Johnson is one of them. I saw 2 people walk out on his lesson because he was so abrasive. No thanks man. Anyway, Tennis is hard to come by in NYC so I'll take what I can get at Prospect Park. I kind of think it's worth the hassle and the BS. read more
