I like this place myself--7 indoor courts in the winter bubble--6 full and 1 on end that's just singles size. Website is easy for booking (high demand admittedly) and courts are in good shape. Front desk can be a bit lackadaisical, but I mean most everything is automated and straightforward. I've taken a couple of lessons and they were fine. Not life changing but not bad. Prices are not cheap, but to be honest that just seems competitive with and comparable to other city tennis options. if there's something to complain about here, I guess it's a certain segment of the clientele. It's a mix of amateur enthusiasts just having a good time like myself and, you know...some people who think they're one lesson away from topping Roger or Serena and stalk around in a Johnny Mc mood. So while many are friendly people sharing the court with you, may have to deal with some snarling if a ball goes awry into another court or there's a second delay in court changeover. Don't really think that's McCarren's fault though--I just roll my eyes and go back to enjoying my fun little tennis hobby. read more

Buyers beware! $600+ of bought credits went down the drain. Bought a package of 5 private lessons last year (worth $600+), but was unable to use those credits because they migrated to a new IT system, and they did not transfer those credits to the new system. Contacted them to transfer those credits over to the new system, but they did not respond to either email or phone calls. Now those $600+ worth of credits are going to expire, so paid them for nothing. read more

I am a tennis expert, and that includes everything there is to discuss about tennis, in fact I am the host of a tennis podcast (underreviewtennis.com) where I talk with the most interesting people in the sport. With that, I am a tennis club expert, whether it be private, semi private, or public. I taught tennis in New York in the 90's, and have played on virtually every court in New York. I am only reviewing the indoor operation that runs from October til April/May. They only get 4 stars because the bubble is great, lighting is good, 7 courts are clean, there is water and benches and chairs on each court, the people that work there are not completely clueless, and the court time during the day during the week is a semi-affordable 40 bucks an hour. The other part of this equation is New York is the absolute worst major city that I can think of in which to play tennis. There are barely any courts and they mostly all suck balls, are exorbitantly priced, and virtually impossible to book. So the bubble at McCarren Park is a great option. read more

Guys its not fair way processing payments! You charging my cards 1 week before reservations and even I canceled 48 hours before reservations i need keep calling you about refund! Come on why don't you just allow us to pay at the spot and if no show then charge the card! Last time I canceled 24 hours before! Front desk said okay no problem! So after 4 days checking my bank statements i see they still haven't refund me. Again I called them and need waste my time explaining again Whats going on. they like ohh we gave you credit. Wtf I don't need damn credit just give me the Refund! Overall its took me Almost 2 weeks and calling them several times to get refund! Before my son got home from college, I signed him up (or so I thought) summer group lessons. He played the first week no problem however, there's nothing on their site indicating you have to sign up for each session each week. It's not a given you can play every week. So, of course, the rest of the summer is completely booked and according to reviews, it'll be tough getting my money back. These people are crooks. Thankfully, my husband is an attorney. read more

They are terrible at doing business. I spent thousands of dollars with them over last 2 yrs and last winter I had just bought a 10 clinic package before I injured my back. All I asked was that my package was transferred to the next Winter season and they refused to do it. I spoke to Sunny who was not only useless but algo rude and a tried contacting Jeff (who I believe is the manager), asking if they could do that "favor" but I was simply ignored. I love tennis so I was thrilled to find these Tennis courts in the winter time to take some good lessons despite the hefty rates. Last winter an adult course was $60 for 1.5 of exercise, for a group lesson of maximal 5 players. There were usually 4-5 players - if there are indeed 5 people, we would have to warm benches one at a time for a few minutes. Now summer has arrived and the container facilities that were open during the winter are not open to the players, meaning if you need to use the bathroom or change - there is nothing available - unless you are courageous enough to face McCarren Park's public loo. With summer a lot of things have changed for the negative: - Adult classes only last for 1 hour now versus the 1.5 during the winter - I just received a phone call informing me that rates will be going up even further - by 10-15% - Don't expect any announcements. After the bubble came down (winter to summer transition) i signed up for another clinic only to find the entire courts and facility completely locked up. No email. No phone call. Not even a sign. I thought someone was playing a trick on me. I had hauled my tennis equipment throughout the city and left work to make my class in time but no one showed up. No one answered a phone call or an email the day of. Unacceptable. On a day when it was supposed to rain, I emailed asking if the class will be cancelled. The response I got:"We will let you know an hour prior to the class if we are continuing or cancelling it." First of all this is telling me that I will get notified either way if the class takes place. Secondly an hour prior doesn't leave much travel time if you work in Manhattan. I never received the promised email telling me if the class takes place... In addition in all the classes I have taken during the summer, the Tennis balls for use are mostly completely dead. I mean paying these high rates should at the minimum provide you with new to semi new balls that would allow for enough bounce to enjoy the clinic. Hopefully the management will get their act together and work on customer satisfaction as the coaches are great! - read more

Kind of like anarchy. Nobody seems to honor this "one-hour" code. I think I even witnessed an attempted uprising from an impatient mob of eager players. When they have an attendant there, chances of getting on a court are raised about 40%., and I'm pretty sure court 7 has ceded to Poland. read more

Beware of trying to ask for a refund for legitimate reasons, for a mistake that the Tennis Center made! I signed up for a Tiny Tot class package and listed the dates and times I could attend. They signed me up for a Saturday 11 am class. They charged my card. Fine. I assumed that I would be attending a Tiny Tot class. We attended the class and I was surprised to find that the children seemed older than my child. I asked one child how old he was and he said 5, meaning he was two years older than my child. This meant my child was NOT in a Tiny Tot class as discussed, they had put him in the older Pee Wee class. I discussed this with the front desk receptionist Alejandra after the class was over and she admitted that there were not enough enrollments for the Tiny Tot class at the times I requested so they just put him in the older class. I think out of courtesy they should've admitted that a tiny Tot class was unavailable and either offered me a refund or asked if I wanted to just join the older class. Of course they didn't reveal any of this until I brought it up. Were they hoping I would just never notice and keep attending class? Customers are not that stupid. She said she would give me a refund after speaking to her manager but of course nobody followed through on this. They never pick up their phone or answer their emails. Funny how they are so nice and responsive by email when you are not asking for a refund but once you do it is radio silent. read more

Although I have never played tennis, I've always imagined myself to be a great player... if given the chance- and a few thousand hours of training. So yesterday, after years of imagining, I decide I'm going to finally begin my tennis career. I run out and pick up some tennis gear and a few friends and we head over to McCarren park... It was a perfect day, I was without hangover, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and we arrive to see the tennis courts empty. We walk up to the gate, open the entry door, and walk halfway in when we hear "Permits Please!!!"... There were 6 parks department employees sitting around a picnic table near the entrance. The leader of the pack tells us that we need a permit to play at these PUBLIC COURTS. We were shocked and appalled. She tells us that we must go to Paragon Sports, in the city, and apply for a permit in order for us to play... So taken aback were we that I immediately pulled out my iphone and conjured up the number to Paragon, while my buddy called up 311. Both confirmed this travesty. In fact, Paragon says that we must apply quickly as the permits are RUNING OUT(!?). Apparently, there are a small number of permits, and you cannot play tennis in any city court without one...: Permits are $7 per person per day, or $100++ per person per season, The courts are locked after hours. And your play seems to be timed as well. This predicament begs a few questions... - Why should we pay for a permit to play at publically funded parks? - Why is a private high-end sporting goods store responsible for this permit distribution? - Why are the fee's so high? (nearby Metropolitan Pool boasts a pool, full gym, lockers, trainers, lifeguards, and a list of other services and their ANNUAL -not seasonal- fee is less that $80!) It seems obvious to me that this system is elitist. What 10 yr. old inner city kid with dreams of being the next Agassi can afford to play at a $7 a day court? And to do so, he'd have to travel into manhattan and find Paragon Sports, file an application, and hope he's accepted, then his partners would all have to do the same. A group of 4 would have to cough up $28 a day to practice, or upwards of $400 for a seasonal permit?! I think that this is just awful... But our own group of former inner city youth are resilient, we ended up playing a faster-paced game of paddleball at a nearby handball court... read more

Tried to sign up my son for lessons. THREE times I called and spoke with someone. Each time they took my info and said they'd call back. They didn't. Then registered for classes online only to find out that the time noted for his age group was actually incorrect. I give up. Apparently they don't need our business. F*ck them. read more

There are 2 separate seasonal scenarios; one is the winter bubble from Nov-May and the other is open air courts May-Nov. Both get one star. In winter you are charged $50-70$ an hour for poorly designed courts with overly slanted bubble ceiling making your area above your head tight and unrealistic, ala balls in play hit the ceiling. AVOID COURT #1, which has no doubles line and thus way too close the court 2 (not discounted though). The advantage to going in winter, despite exorbitant costs, is that you can reserve in advance. The summer system is mind exploding and takes me back to pre school potty monitor days. It involves a usually very angry person with a clipboard who takes your name and tells you if you have a spot. Problem is you never have a spot because there are 6 courts and it's summer and it's Williamsburg. So you cannot call or email anyone to put your name down, you can only come in person to do so up to 2 hours in advance. Basically you need to really really really want to ply tennis and be willing to take 2 hours worth of fun activities to play with as you wait in the grass patch at the gate of the court before you get on the court and play for one hour (maximum you can play)...and then you might get court 1! This is embarrassing. If you have another option, use it. I spend your hours heading to USTA in flushing on professional courts with professional staff and then go eat Indian food after in Astoria. read more

The courts are overcrowded, filled with cracks, worn to the asphalt, the nets have holes, the windscreens are down, windstorms blow off the river, there's tension between the Poles & the hipsters, softball players foul balls onto the courts, there's loud construction in the neighborhood, the attendants are rude and clearly have never held a tennis racket, a lot of players suck and spray balls into nearby courts, and most importantly, the city consciously screws over tennis players by charging them an expensive fee for a public, non-organized activity -- something they only do with tennis. So clearly New York is against tennis players, despite the millions of dollars the US Open brings to the city economy. Despite all those negatives, you know what? I love playing there. I play there nearly every day, weather allowing. in fact, I love it so much that I've joined a non-profit organization that's raising money to improve the courts. Great to have newly-paved hard courts underneath a bubble to play in the winter in north Brooklyn. USTA quality courts.

Usually when you play here there are some kids wearing funny 70's style tennis outfits or neon short shorts and stuff. That's pretty much the best part. The courts are in bad shape, really close together, and the whole place has slants from north to south (play on the north side if you want to win). The attendants are rude but not really that bad. Still, there's a relaxed attitude here and I've generally had a good time. And the wait doesn't seem to be too bad. read more

F the haters on these courts! They're really well-maintained, there are 6 of them plus 2 practice mini-courts. You can even find a pick-up game there What do people expect in terms of crowdedness? I hope other get on yelp to complain about these courts, as of now i think that maybe a couple of courts have been resurfaced. Now the problem with the permit issue. Can we please pay an attendant since jobs are scarce to sit here and monitor the situation for the entire time the courts are available. I'm sure you can create a position for that purpose. Also permits are now $200 dollars so a permit holder i resent when non-holders are arguing to play, well you can't. Also people need to honor the whole one-hour rule, way to many arguments with these Polish guys from Greenpoint who think they own the courts because they secure private funding for resurfacing? If we pay $200, why can't we have new blue courts? It can be anarchy here, and you feel like you have to fight for a court.
