Thank goodness for the Protein Bar, or I would've been stuck eating unhealthy conference food for three days straight. The "One El of an Oatmeal" with the whey protein and 2% milk options was my favorite out of all the oatmeal bowls I tried. Topped with sliced bananas, strawberries, and golden raisins, it wasn't only visually appealing, but it was delicious and filling. The raw juices here are legit. No sugars and artificial flavors added; one sip and you'll know that they aren't fibbing. I tried the Beetbox, which was fine, but each sip towards the end of my cup gradually became bitter. The Hi-5 on the other hand was sweeter and more tolerable for me. Their blended drinks aren't bad. The Pier-nut Butter & Jelly is a choice if you need to fill up on protein and antioxidants in the morning. It's a blend of peanut butter, blueberries, and strawberries. Eating healthy does come with a price tag. I felt like I spent a small fortune here each day during my stay, but I'd rather spend my cash on food that's not going to leave me full of regrets. read more

First off, the food and service at Protein Bar is superb for a fast food chain. Friendly staff, easy to decipher menu, clean space, good food, etc. Every single person I ever order from at the counter has a smile on their face and a great attitude. 5 stars to the staff. This single star is for one of their managers. The manager who spoke to her staff like they were subhumans. The manager who barked orders to everyone and no-one at the same time, you know, real loud but not directly at anyone as if all the staff were supposed to jump at her every screech. The manager who, on a busy Saturday morning, had her head so far up her bum that she didn't realize I (and every other guest) could hear her speak to her staff with such disrespect. This treatment is no way to train, grow, or keep employees. Not to mention that she was white and almost all of her staff were not. To see such a large corporation open a chain establishment in a predominantly rich, white neighborhood and then to see the manager speak down to her predominantly NOT rich or white staff in front of guests is disgusting. It's rude, unprofessional, and only encourages such heinous societal habits. Every single adult and child in Protein Bar on Saturday morning heard how this woman was treating her staff. Whether they recognize it or not, that memory will influence them in the future. Those children will remember this woman's demonstration of how to act towards others. Protein Bar as a chain is kind of amazing. I have enjoyed several meals at many different chain locations all fresh, healthy, and delicious. However, this location has not impressed me. In fact, it totally destroyed my day. I had ordered the Vegan Original Bar-rito on my lunch break from work. As I took my first bite, I thought it tasted a little strange. As it turns out, I had shredded chicken in my bar-rito and had downed meat for the first time in 12 years. So disappointed. One, I came to find out that quinoa chili bowls are now being charged separately. So the quinoa is a price, the chili is another price, cheese is extra and the yogurt is also extra. Totaling to almost $12 as opposed to the $7.72 price it used to be. Fine I understand things change but the bowl I was served was a little over halfway full. Before it would be fuller which made me even more upset because I'm paying a significant amount of money for less product? The chicken chili also only had 3 pieces of chicken in it and the rest is just liquid. Makes no sense, not only that but I make the trip out there to specifically buy my lunch. I wish Protein Bars were as common as McDonalds. We'd all be better off! Why? Because it's fast food, but it's also healthy-and-fresh food. Options include made-to-order juice, salads, bar-ritos (glorified wraps), bowls and chili. I had the marinated tofu bar-rito, with black beans, quinoa, vegan cheese, and cilantro in a whole-wheat flax tortilla (plus added avocado). I'm kind of in love with Protein Bar right now. I've been trying to make better (aka healthier) decisions when it comes to the food I eat, and Protein Bar has made that a lot easier when I'm away from home looking for a quick meal or snack. Not only is the food healthy, but it is also extremely tasty. Prices are pretty reasonable and the food is extremely filling. I was super excited when the Clybourn location opened, as it is a short walk from the Armitage Brown Line and is reasonably close to where I work. I love the quinoa bowls (the Black Bean Bowl is one of my favorite lunches - quinoa topped with seasoned black beans and shredded cheese) and the chili is delicious. For breakfast, I love to order One El of an Oatmeal (organic steel-cut oats with chocolate protein, milk, organic agave nectar, and spices, topped with fresh fruit) or one of the many protein shakes. They also have burritos, salads, soup, and a variety of other items from which to choose. Are you a meat eater? They have chicken. Delicious chicken. Want chicken but the menu item you are eyeing doesn't include it? You can add it for an additional charge. Vegetarian or vegan? Never fear. They have plenty of meat free options, too. Want a protein shake but worried about the dairy? You can choose from cow milk, almond milk, or soy milk. For the protein powder, you have the choice of whey, soy, or egg. Service has been great so far. The staff is friendly and more than willing to answer questions. I stopped in because my friend randomly decided to fill her protein needs here. She had a very tough, grueling workout and was in some serious need of protein. This woman really hits the gym, believe me, so this little place was the only feasible option to recuperate her amazing muscles. Being a weakling and wanting to impress my friend, I decided to accompany her because I hear this rumor that you need protein to build muscles. Anyways, I walked in and was immediately overwhelmed with the variety of delicious options, never a bad thing, those first impressions count! So I asked my man Emerson at the register what his favorite dish was and boy o' boy I'm so glad I did. Best decision of the day! I got the Saigon bowl, with his ringing endorsement, because you can never, ever go wrong with a Thai peanut sauce. This salad hit the spot! It was a manmeal cleverly disguised, pretending to be a salad. I could already feel my muscular attractiveness rising from the first bite. I'm gonna have to start showering in that God-awful axe body spray to repel women. Also, I'm one of those horrible people that needs to change/alter dishes because of my finicky palate and the good news is that everything on the menu is customizable. So Emerson hooked me up and added delicious protein-filled black beans and the delectable, nutritious hemp mix to my meal. He is also the man because I forgot about the amazingness of my deity, the all powerful Avocado and set me up with a free side when I asked him. Upon remembering my said God, I also ordered the Avo-Matcha smoothie and it is the bomb.com amazing. I nearly forgot my Neanderthal need to impress the opposite sex because the pure ecstasy obtained from this smoothie was going to satisfy me for the rest of my days. Anyways make sure you come here because dear lord, all hail the great Avocado, I know I've found a new favorite. P.S. Holy Sh*t they have Cholula and Sriracha on tap. Love the option for a quick meal with my son between school and sports. Many kid-friendly options on the menu too. I have always experienced friendly and quick service. Atmosphere is very clean, though a bit noisy. Portion sizes are very generous. I also like the posted nutritional info, and always leave very full and satisfied, especially considering those posted calorie counts! The quinoa bowls are especially satisfying. Tried the buffalo and the healthy parm- both very flavorful. Raw juices are great too. For breakfast I really like the Santa Fe bar-rito. All in- I anticipate I will be a regular here! read more

Okay my peeps, this location has a parking lot and its conveniently located between Racine and North Ave on Clybourn Ave. We got lucky and pulled into the rock star spot directly in front. There are no handicap spots in this lot. It's first come first serve. Upon entering, we were excited to checkout the menu and order. But, while looking at the menu along the wall, several peeps just walked in front of us without saying excuse me or..hi..you don't mind if I butt in front of you. Of course, being polite We didn't say anything and just chuckled. We got a laugh out of pure ignorance. We ordered the small chicken chilli with the dollap of Greek yogurt, cheddar and scallions. Then, ordered the Ivy (which is awesome) get it, its the bomb. Then, we split the Red Line with Almond Milk. We actually got the wrong drink :( It's very easy to get the wrong drink because there are mega drink makers and no structure in the line. So you order, pay and move to pickup. They shout your name over the loud ass blender jet engines and screaming kids. The seating area is spacious, but, it is way too loud for a conversation. We thought it better to have a wall between the order line and the seating to block some of the jet engine blenders. Be sure to grab napkins and utensils before exiting for take out because they do not stick any in the bag. The Ivy and Chicken Chilli was really tasty and satisfying. read more

Definitely healthy eating! I really enjoy the smoothies, Bucktown green tea and the Red line are my two favorites. I love that you can opt for almond milk instead of milk. I also love the oatmeal (pancake in a bowl?) yummy, so much better than that instant stuff I usually have. The Baja salad is delicious and plentiful, with really good greens. I love how thin they slice the broccoli, it adds a great crunch, the dressing is very light though, almost bland, I like my dressing a little more zesty or spicy but regardless the salad is delicious. It's probably done that way to keep it healthy, something I definitely need more of in my life. So Yeah... I like this place for a quick salad or a healthy smoothie. read more

VEGETARIANS BEWARE!! After several near misses with this location the worst finally happened today. For a chain that purports itself to be healthy and has options for people watching their weight, avoiding gluten, carbs, vegan, etc, the staff does not back up this intention. 2 times ago when I visited I noticed that my buffalo tofu salad looked different. I asked if it was my correct order and was reassured that it was. Upon closer investigation, the salad contained chicken instead of tofu. The counter staff acted like it was no big deal and remade my salad, but to me it was a huge deal. I mentioned something to the manager on the way out and she assured me she would be on top of it. Fast forward to today when I visited this location for a buffalo tofu salad and a veggie chili. The cashier read back my order and said: "you wanted a veggie chicken chili", to which I replied: "veggie chili". She said: oh yeah! that makes sense. I didn't put it together until just now that you ordered the buffalo salad without chicken. When I picked up my order, I asked the girl packing it to confirm it was all vegetarian. Again I got an attitude of "yeah, why are you making a big deal, its vegetarian". So i trusted her and left. I arrived home and ate my meal only to discover it was chicken chili. I discovered this by biting into, chewing and swallowing (part of) a big chunk of chicken. I have been vegetarian for over 20 years and will likely get sick for this oversight. I wouldn't be so furious if this didn't happen every time I go in, and if the staff didn't handle it so nonchalantly. I called and the manager was understanding, but I consider it too little too late. Also - you may think the smoothies are safe, but probably not, especially for vegans. A few times before this I ordered a PBJ smoothie with soy protein. When my smoothie came out it had a giant EGG written on the top (for egg based protein). I asked for clarification because egg protein really grosses me out and the counter staff insisted it was soy... likely so they wouldn't have to remake it and risk getting in trouble. read more

The Protein Bar is the healthy eater's paradise. Not only is the food unbelievably healthy, it tastes AMAZING. I, personally, would choose a bar-rito over a Chipotle burrito any day. (I know saying that is a travesty, but it's true). The guac and roll bar-rito was astounding. And, the pier-nut butter and jelly smoothie was out of this world. First time trying this place and I already love it! When I first walked in the scenery was so clean and calm, the team members were very welcoming. The menu is very straight forward and shows the name & ingredients that go in the dishes / protein shake which is very useful if you are a first time customer. If you want to know what the food has in case you want the team members leave out an item it'd be very useful or if you're just interested in what items are put in it. I was very indecisive because everything I read sounded great but I decided to go with the Mexicali. This bowl has chicken, corn, black beans, cheddar, salsa, spicy tomatillo lime sauce and chipotle Greek yogurt topped with avocado! The mixture of flavor of all those items really complimented each other. Every bite I had was filled with so many flavors I just couldn't stop eating it. The food felt very pleasurable, enticing and mouthwatering. After finishing this I really wanted to go buy another one ( although I didn't ) I would definitely be returning. I left away feeling happy and fulfilled, not only with the food but the customer service!!! Please go try it out you won't be disappointed. I give Protein Bar (specifically the one on N. Clyborn) 3 stars for a couple reasons.. Firstly, I LOVE protein bar.. I could eat the Baja salad everyday and the chili is sooo good! But this location is the closest to my work so unfortunately I am never satisfied with their performance. I've eaten at the Protien Bar in Schaumburg all the time and their food always looks and tastes the same. That's not the case with the N Clyborn location.. Inconsistent tasting, inconsistent looking.. It's just a mess. I ordered a salad today and it was barely chopped up.. Couldn't even taste the cilantro lime dressing (I think they forgot it). This place isn't cheap, however, I'll pay for healthy convenient food. That's the business model.. But what good is that if you never know if it's going to be a good or bad day for the quality of the food?? read more

Am I the only dumbass who assumed the quinoa bowl was warm? Yes? Just me? I swear I thought it was a hot dish. Anyway. I got the buffalo bowl with tofu subbed for chicken. I think it's funny they specify the buffalo sauce is vegan, but the bowl also has blue cheese. I'm not vegan so I don't care but if you're vegan make sure you mention. Nice that they don't upcharge to sub tofu for chicken. I liked it. I mean the temperature sort of threw me. It wasn't hot. Wasn't cold, either. More... chilled? I don't know. Also at first glance the bowl looked really small. However now that I've eaten it... yeah. Quinoa is filling! I couldn't eat the whole thing, so joke's on me for complaining about portion size. There is an incredible detail to the execution of their menu that I completely appreciate. They are friendly. They know my name. They know my usual order. It's exceptional to begin with. But tonight I arrived 10 minutes after they closed (the door was still unlocked). I was greeted by name, and they actually UNPACKED the food they had put away to make me dinner. Astounded. My fav gym is in Lincoln Park and I just recently discovered Protein Bar when a friend there recommended it. I've stopped in a few times after my workout and I've fallen in love. Their food is a little pricey, so I tend to go more for their smoothies. The pier-nut butter is AMAZING and I always get it with the energy boost to perk me up a bit. The service here goes above and beyond for what I would expect from a fast food joint. The employees are always super happy and even come from around the counter to help you choose something from the menu if you look confused. I'm not sure of names, but I always seem to get the same cashier with green hair. :-) An amazing place to go and refuel. (And for families apparently, because whenever I go there are always alot of kids.) I'll be back. read more

The wraps, particularly the quinoa-tofu-black bean is generally tasteless, like hullo? Can I get some spices up in here. The concept of the conscious whole food meal is admirable. Came to this location one day after not having eaten aaaallllll day. I normally have my green smoothie but I had left it on the counter that morning. I asked the employee working, Paris which smoothie would be most like the one I made at home (after describing it to her). I love this place!!!! Last sunday i tried to order off of grubhub from Protein Bar but sadly they didnt deliver to my location, so i was deeply disappointed since their food sounded amazing. The next day, my boyfriend surprised me with food from here. Enough food to last me for days (literally it did). Everything was sooo amazing and I didn't feel guilty eating it since i knew it was healthy for me:) It also helped since i don't get a lot of protein intake so i was also pleased by that.
