Cue "Thriller." This tour was one of the highlights of our recent trip through New England. And by "highlight" I mean a fun thing I remember, but in no way am I implying there are garish, bright lights. Nay. This tour is dark, spooky, creepy, icky, moody, morbid, annnnd fun. We started at Prospect Terrace Park with some facts about poor Roger Williams and his unfortunate original burial place, then walked through some residential blocks and over to Brown's campus. As a walking tour of historic Providence, I think this route was very good (and sometimes steep - work those glutes). We encountered a little traffic here and there, but really not much, which helped preserve the mood. Our guide, whose name escapes me (but who is in David R.'s photo) was very good. She knew her stuff and provided a lot of information but wasn't hurried, and, importantly, wasn't cheesy. I say this in part because we did a second ghost tour in another New England city and that guide was super corny, bless her heart. Providence is a city with a higher ghost-per-capita rate than average, apparently. The tour capitalizes on this, and is full of legit sites with a variety of scaaawee stories - creepy happenings, mysteries, unexplained accidents, unhappy souls, hauntings, etc. We definitely got our money's worth and would recommend it. I'm kind of sad to be giving Providence Ghost Tour two stars. I really don't want to, but I was seriously hoping to be way more spooked than I was. I had high expectations, and I was a bit let down. Chalk it up to slightly misleading advertising. This would have been better billed as a historic tour of Providence's sordid past, or something like that. The tour, led by Dylan -- an animated young college chap -- was certainly interesting, informative and entertaining... ok, and some of the buildings were a little creepy. I didn't see any orbs, apparitions, specters or poltergeists though, and I heard better storytelling on the lantern ghost tour in Colonial Williamsburg. You begin in Prospect Terrace Park and head towards Brown University's quad (where you learn the interesting past behind several of Brown's buildings), down along Benefit Street, up the scary Meeting Street hill and back to the park. There are certainly sites that I would like to visit in the daytime when they are open and I can go inside. I also felt that the size of this tour was prohibitive. It might be time to grow the operation, offer more scattered tour times and cap the number of people on each tour to a dozen or so. A more intimate tour may lend more to a paranormal experience. I was happy with the value since i purchased a Living Social deal for the tour. I am not trying to deter people from going by any means, because it was interesting. Just go into it expecting the History channel rather than Ghost Hunters on the Discovery channel. read more

Fun! Three of us went on the Providence Ghost Tour last night and it was a pretty good time. We walked all over the gorgeous east side of town, enjoyed the cool evening breeze (that was unexpected, after night after night of 85 degree misery. Think twice about a summer ghost walk - it's HOT out there) and learned some of the history of Providence. This tour felt a lot more like a history tour than a ghost walk, however, I think mostly because some of the other guests steered the conversation in that direction and our guide was knowledgable enough to veer off on non-ghostly tangents. I was disappointed that our guide was a "skeptic", mostly because it meant she refused to talk about any ghosts other than those on our tour. I asked about the RI haunted house that the recent movie The Conjuring is about and she flatly said, "We can only discuss the ghosts on our tour, that have been verified by the tour owners." I get that the company wants to retain a good reputation in the ghost-hunting community (...um...assuming there is one) but I was hoping to hear a little more about the other house, considering it's currently a RI ghostly claim to fame. I attribute her unwillingness to stray from the script more to her own disbelief in ghosts than a company concern. This was a fun night and a great way to hang out with friends and visit downtown. Went on a Ghost Tour Halloween Weekend. Our Guides were Erin and Dillion. They took us around Prospect Terrace Park/College Hill area showing the group areas of historical value and possibly of paranormal prominence. Both took turns telling us about each location. They were very informed about each event and location including what may have caused the possible haunting and stories of such paranormal events. They kept everyone entertained, happy and delightfully spooked. Being it was around Halloween they also provided candy treats for all. Whether you are a paranormal buff, a history junkie or just want to have a good night in Providence doing something different Providence Ghost tours is a worthwhile experience. Had a great night on our tour tonight! Alora was our guide and she was fun and informative. We did not see any ghosts during our walk, but it was a great way to learn more about the history of Providence, some of its older buildings and former residents. You do walk up and down hills with sidewalks that are in need of repair so walking shoes are a MUST, a few in our group did not and were holding onto friends to get up the down the hills safely. Also bring cash for a tip, I forgot and felt really bad because our guide was amazing and totally deserved a tip. read more

My roommate and I bought groupons for this tour when we first moved to Providence. Seemed like a good way to get to know our new city. The tour was pretty crowded (probably due to the influx of groupon holders). We went on a walk around Benefit street and up to Brown. It was pretty interesting, but seemed like more history than ghosty. The only paranormal type stuff was when the tour guide showed us that he was carrying a K2 (some sort of signal receiver that supposedly picked up on paranormal energy). Kind of cheesy, but it was a good value at $10 a tour. Why only 2 stars? I'm grading it in relation to the other ghost tours in the area. Yes, I have been on 4 ghost tours in New England (Providence, Boston, Plymouth, and Salem). Providence probably ranks 3rd out of the 4. read more

Boyfriend and I had a little downtime one night and were looking for something a little out of the ordinary to do. Prov Ghost Tour to the rescue! If you'd like to enjoy a beautiful evening walk about the stunning historical college hill area of providence, with a charming guide to all things ghastly, this is the thing to do. The tour spans about an hour and a half to two hours, and even a resident of the area may learn something new or see something exciting! If you're lucky, a little something spooky may happen along the way, as it did for us. ;) Photography is encouraged, as is linking to and hashtagging the ghost tour if you happen to catch any unexplained phenomena. For the price, it was a very pleasant evening diversion. I might actually take the tour again some night! read more

I've lived in RI for 34yrs and this was my first time on this tour. It was great!!! Our guide Alaura was fantastic. My husband and I learned a lot more about Providence and it's history. I took a bunch of pictures and captured a few things. I will download them to the website. Some of my pictures mysteriously disappeared. I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are about, but we LOVED this tour. Maybe the low expectations helped, but I've been on dozens of ghost tours around the country, and none were overtly better...then again none were really scary either... Tour started with a beautiful view of providence, and walked through all the most architecturally and otherwise amazing parts of the city, and talked about ghosts. That's what we wanted, and that's what we got. Tour guide was delightfully hokey and made the tour a blast. Will definitely repeat any time people come to visit. read more

This is a great way to start your trip in Providence. We learned so much history of the town that we followed up on the rest of the weekend. Our guide, Stephanie was spectacular. She was lively and kept the whole night entertaining. I did not expect to see any ghosts, so do not do this if that is all you care about, as it is more of an educational trip. Very informative. Alora was our guide and she was quite engaging, knowledgeable and friendly. We had a group of 43 but as we walked at one point we had an additional 15 people who joined and did not pay. I found that to be so ghetto.. The path was dark and a bit scary due to cars who flew past us in a hurry to get nowhere. I did enjoy it but wanted to suggest that the tour pass out large glow in the dark circles for the ones who paid to wear so the ones who did not can be easily seen and perhaps a few lanterns for safety. read more

This tour is very scary. There were lots of ghosts outside the historic buildings. One was a scary face, Another one was a spectre of an old colonial soldier riding a horse. I could even hear the horses footsteps. I saw a ghost of a man with a bullet through his eye. It was really gruesome. I am so scared. There was even a bear in the park that we had to run away from!! I did not believe in ghosts before this tour but now I see them all the time. They follow me everywhere I go. I see Edgar Allan Poe under the street lamps sometimes. He even gives me a swig of his whiskey. This tour is a must do for anyone who is a sceptic. Believers will most definitely have their beliefs proven. This tour was great, my first time in Providence and I really enjoyed seeing the town from a spooky view.. Caught it on Halloween which was even better :) Our guide was very animated and knew her historical facts. Max was a great tour guide. His loud, theatrical voice carried over the crowd of 35 people. He was very knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy his job. It was a nice, quiet walk through the east side of Providence at night where you could fully enjoy all of the buildings and history of the area. read more

Took a group of 8 on this tour a couple nights ago. Two of them were my cousins from Canada and were interested in the history of providence. The tour guide was awesome. We walked for about 2 hours. Interesting stories, but my was not as spooky as I had hoped. Very informative tour though. It would get a higher rating from me if we got to go into at least one of the buildings. You need a lot of imagination for this history walk around the East side of Providence. I kept an open mind, ready for some story to give me chills. I did not feel it. Our tour guide was a book of knowledge overfilled with stories. She talked about apparitions that has been seen in the past. We walked up and down hills on sidewalks that needed repair so be prepared. We had a group of at least 15 people show up. We were 3, so it is popular enough i'm just not sure if I would go again. Went last night with my husband on the tour... I learned a lot about my new city's history & was thrilled to see where HP Lovecraft lived & Edgar Allan Poe's mistress too! We had a knowledgeable tour guide & she was wonderful! Think I was the only one out of our group of 7 that took over 100 photos (I lagged behind now & then & had to hustle to catch up to the group as they walked off) but I'm glad I did. I got some of the finest photos I've caught...TONS of orbs & the places with what seemed to be the creepiest stories, well they just GLOWED in my shots! I was disappointed with the fact that our guide's "meter" of some sort broke & she didn't have it with her, AND the fact that the last big hill we climbed I could hardly make it all the way up! Just wish it was a bit scarier, too...not too sure if it's really for kids, so why not make it a little richer with the creep factor? Other than that...it was a good night, an hour & a half of entertainment for $15 a person...what can be better than that? read more

Saturday night October 22 was cold and blustery, perfect conditions for a ghost tour. It was nice to walk around historic Providence, Prospect Terrace Park has a beautiful view of Providence, esp. at night. My husband and I decided to do a ghost tour for date night. Such a great idea. Our tour guide Max dressed in costume and put on a great performance. It was great! Learned a lot about College Hill, both historically and (of course) ghostly. It was really interesting and the guides. The only thing that could have been better is that I wish the guides would have been a little more theatrical (and that I would have gotten to see a ghost). Spooky fun on a walking tour of areas reputed to be haunted in the university area of Providence. Our guide, Allura, was knowledgeable, friendly, knew her material, and shared personal anecdotes. The pace was good, she managed to keep a large tour group organized, and she had a good theatrical presence. Did I see a ghost? I am not sure, although I have a few photos with inexplicable orbs. I highly recommend comfortable walking shoes, no heels, as this is a walking tour that traverses the uneven hilly streets of Providence. read more

I loved this tour!! Our guide, Courtney, was amazing and so enchanting! No matter what was happening in the world around us, the whole group was totally enamored with her. I went w a large group and we all felt engaged and part of her world. We learned some of Providence's darkest stories and the dirty little secrets that still haunt the city. At the beginning of the tour, my battery on my camera was fully charged. Within the first few stops, my battery was totally drained so I had to use my cell phone for pictures. I got amazing pics w orbs dancing across the screen. I even took a short, muted video of one orb literally moving across the house and sky. At one stop, I was lucky enough to hold the EDT and it was going crazy!! At another stop, it was so active that the person holding it got spooked and handed it off as soon as possible . It was truly an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone that likes to learn about the factual history of the ghosts that still haunt Providence! read more

This tour was great. The stories were interesting,the neighborhood with its mid 19th century houses everywhere made for great ambiance for the stories and enhanced them to a great extent. Max our tour guide 1. You could tell he truly loved his and if you love your job you don't work a day in your life. 2. He had over 4 years of experience with just this tour and some years experience giving trolley tours in Boston most tour guides are there for a few months and then they're gone and you can tell what ones are there just for a paycheck. 3. He was a an amazing story teller he interacted with the crowd he did not do any campy, cheesy theatrics he told it like it was in an entertaining way. All tours come down the person giving the tour if the person is not good at telling story's the tour is going to suck. I loved Poe poem at the end it capped off everything nicely. If this tour had been given by any less of a storyteller I would be writing a totally different review. read more

It was a fun and informative walking tour. But our guide, bless her heart, kind of ruined it. The whole time she seemed out of breath and nervous in front of people. She was trying to recite a script from memory in this really awkward way. I think it would have been more effective if she had just been herself instead of the bad acting. read more

Based on the directions I downloaded off their website, I map quested what I thought would get me close enough to Roger Williams Statue since they gave no numeric addresses to punch in my GPS. There were no telephone numbers to call to double check. Hoping it would save time I prepaid on PAYPAL the $30 for the tour (it was a birthday tour for my husband who mentioned he would be interested in it upon returning from Iraq) I found in many parks, near many statues, none of which were the Roger Williams Statue where the tour was to commence. After driving around aimlessly for a good 30 min. I decided to call the number listed on my PAYPAL receipt, hoping that someone would answer and we could get directions to where the tour was at that time. I said, we are lost, please call us back so we can join you, let me know if we can reschedule for another time or if a refund can be issued. Did I hear back from them? No, I did not. Finally, I emailed the Providence Ghost Tour via an email page on their site 2 weeks later. I was pretty upset because not only did someone not call me back that night or even the next day, I found myself contacting them AGAIN. I told them I wanted a refund, and that I was disappointed that they did not respond to my call, and that if they didn't refund my money, I would be forced to write a bad review or contact the paper. The guy who called me back, oh, here is the phone number for any questions you might have (don't expect a response) 401-742-6671- asked me to retrieve the mapquest directions so that we could go over them (mind you, he called me at work, 2 weeks later) and that he thought the directions on the website were very specific. He even went as far as to ask me to read over the directions on his site with him together over the phone and when I told him I thought that was a tad condescending, he proceeded to offshoot into a tale about how a police officer knows by the reaction of the driver he pulls over whether or not he will issue a ticket within the first 5 minutes. I couldn't believe what I was hearing... he then told me the fault of getting lost was my own and that he would only extend to me tickets for another time. In any case, it was a no win battle on either side and I thought his demeanor was far less than professional and the website was vague.
