I have no sense of what pricing is supposed to be so I continued my shop and bought what I needed (nothing fancy) as I just arrived and it was open. I found the checkout folks very helpful as I was unable to read the check out machines. I will say, the food was outstanding - the La Pinte milk was great, fresh strawberries and corn (very good!). Not knowing what food shopping is like in Quebec I found the place to be large enough and had what I needed when I needed it.

Of course I reached in from the other side and grabbed what I wanted. They charged us for something that wasn't lobster tails and I'm pretty sure the rest of the bill was a bit weird as well. Pretty big store I would suggest coming 8 pm don't go at 10 like us unless you're only going to pick up basic things.

It has a bakery in the store and you can get some nice pies, breads and cakes. Since the store changed names, the selection of beer has increased dramatically. They now have beer from many of the microbreweries in Montreal. I even found (and bought) a bottle of Kissmeyer beer from Odense, Denmark but brewed in Ontario. We visited the Kissmeyer brewery last month when we were in Denmark. Other parts of the store include the dairy section where you can buy Quebec butter, milk and other products. Quebec milk is better than US milk for cappuccino frothing. They have a small meat department and produce area. If you are American, stop by US Customs on your way to Canada and become familiar with the produce you can and can't bring back to the US. There are lots of rules with produce.

If I'm going to be anywhere near the Eastern Townships, I detour to La Rumeur. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They know everything about the products they sell, and they go above and beyond to be helpful. It's also really cute! The whole space has a country store look and feel. You get the sense that you are in a family store (even if it probably isn't) where everyone takes pride in what they sell. If you are near either one of their two locations, don't miss the opportunity to grab a cookie!

A beautiful working monastery in the heart of the rural Eastern Townships, the Abbaye de…read moreSaint-Benoit-du-Lac was well worth the visit. It is a relatively modern monastery, built over the course of the early to mid 1900s. We went on a Sunday morning for mass and found the sanctuary full of parishioners and tourists. The Gregorian chant was beautiful to hear, although we weren't able to stay for the whole liturgy due to a very impatient infant. We weren't there for a tour, but did stop to read some of the displays describing the history of the monastery and the rhythms of monastic life. The colored brickwork and overall architecture is beautiful. There aren't a lot of spaces open to the public, but we still enjoyed walking around and seeing some of the snow-covered grounds. The monastery is known for its cheeses and jams, so a visit to the store was on our agenda. The store, however, was located in the basement, and the only access we could find was a flight of stairs. We had a stroller, though, and couldn't find an elevator. We ended up taking turns walking the baby outside while the other person explored the store. The grounds at this time (April) were mostly not open to the public, but I've read that they have some walking trails. When it was my turn, I didn't have much time to look. But it looked like they had a large selection of abbey-made items as well as a bookstore with a good sized children's section. I bought some postcards and a French-language children's missel for a friend, but would have looked longer if I could. The Tall Man picked up a four pack of cheeses for a Swiss friend, who loved it, plus some other goodies, but we wished we had some jam! They didn't have larger bags at the register, but they did have some empty boxes. There are a couple parking lots that quickly filled up for mass. I would love to know if they have an accessible entrance to the store. By the time I found some of the store staff, though, I didn't ask since I needed to go. We noticed others who either left strollers outside or turned back from the abbey entrance.
