Over the years the BHOC's movie nights have varied widely (Aug thru Oct). Check their website around July next year for next season's updates: number of films, screening venues, etc. This annual event is different from other SF outdoors cinema events. First, because it's not strictly outdoors, with a few indoor venues. Secondly, it's much smaller, the crowd includes all ages but most are older adults, and the movies are usually documentaries (a few stop motion animation too) - all are less than 30 min long (1 or 2 exceptions in previous years), some are less than 5 min. No commercial movies here, all are independent films, with many made by Bernal Heights residents. It's like the academy awards for local film makers. As you enter from the bottom floor, you can either stand in line to buy tickets from the box office or go to the kiosk on the side. Its actually pretty quick to just get your tickets from the kiosk, its the same price. There are several levels of theaters so double check how many levels you have to go up. There are escalators in the center to bring you up. If your theater is near the top, remember to buy your snacks from the counters on the first couple levels, All levels have a food counter, but the ones near the top aren't always open. The place is very clean and very busy. They have great service and the food line goes by really quick. i will definitely come back here to watch more movies. The also have a current deal on ICEEs and Popcorn. It was buy one Large ICEE and Large PopCorn and get another Large ICEE for FREE. Not sure how often their promos change.

It breaks my heart. San Francisco is losing too many of the historic gems that give this city its personality and character, and among the most important of these are our neighborhood movie houses. I joined this group when it first started, happily signing petitions, sending e-mails and writing letters to help save historic, beautiful and architecturally significant San Francisco neighborhood theaters from the wrecking ball. I'm thrilled with the many victories that SFNTF has been a part of, most specifically the Cinema 21 and the Vogue theaters. They are still working hard on salvaging what can be saved of the Metro theater on Union Street. I applaud all that they do, and if you would like to keep history alive and not turned into more soulless condos or unnecessary Walgreens, you should as well! Sign up at their website!

The only movie theater that it's actually worthwhile to get there early for. As much as I love the place, I can't rightfully give it five stars anymore. I'm not sure if corporate buyout is the sole reason or if things were trending this way anyways for theaters, but some of the small touches that made the place so special seemed to have changed. First, the ordering structure has changed. Previously, you would write your order down on a little piece of pen and paper that are provided to you and press a call button. A server would come, take your paper order and be off quickly. Now, with the remodeled recliner chairs, that option has gone away. Ordering has to now be done via your phone, which means you have to take out your phone in the middle of the movie and go through that process if you want. It's cumbersome, more distracting from the movie experience and honestly causing me to order.MUCH less. I recognize the money saved by hiring less people to serve the theater, but there has to be a significant loss in revenue from food and drinks. The older method was a lot more fun, and the tables had a more classic wooden vibe as opposed to the more plastic feel currently. On top of that, it feels like the drink options have gone down with less beers on tap and less food specials. All in all, I still love the majesty of the place, but I'm a little less eager to go.

These trailers would end with a stern warning to keep your phone silent and out of sight during the movie, to avoid distracting fellow moviegoers. A human being would greet you, check your ticket, tell you about the menu tucked under your seat's tray table (with a subtle light to help you read it during the movie without disturbing others), take your food and drink order, and instruct you how to place additional orders during the show. At the end, they'd bring you the bill. All in all, you felt like you were getting an experience curated by and operated by movie fans, for movie fans; and that someone at the business actually cared that you had a good experience. Fast forward to tonight. The menus are gone: now you scan a QR code, and laboriously type your credit card number into your phone. (Gone is the admonition to put away your phone during the movie - how else can you order more stuff?) Now of course everyone has phones out during the movie, because if it's the only way to order stuff, the temptation to also check your whatsapp, shein offers, insta, telegram, and other alerts is simply too great to resist. At the end of the movie you get...another text, saying that if you don't manually use your phone's web browser to close out your tab, it will close automatically with a 20% tip (computed, of course, not on the subtotal but on the total including taxes and mandatory SF city surcharges). At no time did I interact with a human being. The usually lively Bulls & Bears bar downstairs was nearly deserted. I now see why. To use Cory Doctorow's term, the ens****ification of Alamo Drafthouse has begun. After the movie I asked a lobby employee if there was a way to give feedback. Long story short, they said the chain had recently been acquired by Sony™©® Global Empire Of Intergalactic Entertainment Co. Inc. Ltd. (I'm embellishing) and they had made a number of decisions that were beyond the control of the individual locations. I Am Gladdened To Hear That Sony™©® Has Expanded Its Global Entertainment Reach With This Acquisition And I Hope They Manage To Seriously Extract A Flick Ton Of Shareholder Value From It Before They Completely Destroy A Great Brand. Movie Night @The Yard at Mission Rock is the latest addition to my list of free outdoor cinema…read moresites in SF, it debuted in Aug 2015 with the movie Jaws. This gathering spot (corner of SF Giants Parking Lot A) is made of shipping containers similar to the Proxy on Hayes Valley. The 20'x40' giant inflatable screen is setup on the street (Terry Francois Blvd will be closed to traffic) facing the Yard's grand staircase (aka. Giants Steps & Upper Deck), so unlike other outdoor cinema events setup on park lawns, people seated on the staircase will have unobstructed views of the movie screen. Or u can also seat on the wooden parklet on the street closest to the screen. Those dining at the food trucks section on the left side, can get a side view of the screen. The staircase space is modest (about 100 people), so get here early to get a seat. Movie starts at 8pm. Bring a blanket to sit or keep warm on windy nights. Best of all, there's food and beer available at the enclosed beer garden on the right side, until 11pm (Anchor Brewing, Creperie St. Germain, Belcampo burgers), or dine at the food trucks until 8pm (3 trucks, organized by OTG) parked on the left side (parking lot corner). 2016 movie schedule - starts @ 8pm: Sat. There's a fabulous collection of horses. Divert, the theater has slighted seats. Love sitting on the side with nobody in front blocking. Chairs are still comfortable. Cup holder. The sound system is not deafening. The newer theaters blast you with sound. You go away deaf. Wine and beer sold. Drinks galore. Women's restroom -There's always a line but kept clean. Close to japantown so when you finish there's so many places to eat.

However, $11 for a few hours or parking wasn't bad considering the ease of finding a space and proximity to the theater. It was nice to see security (SFPD) at the front door. The theater's facilities feel outdated compared to other venues out there. Its age is very apparent. The old, creaky cloth seats were a quite distracting when anyone around you moved a bit. The movie screen and sound system were fine though. Consessions - the popcorn was just OK. 1/2 of our large container was just crumbs. Perhaps they scooped from the bottom? The sugar-free ginger ale was empty at one of the self-serve soda machines. Despite all this, it was still good to be at the historic AMC Kabuki 8 theater which has been around for over 50-60 years. It'a always fun to be in Japantown San Francisco!

The street cinema is close to a bunch of restaurants and shops to explore before the movie (since the film doesn't start until it gets dark anyway). When I went, the event said it would start at 8:30pm, but it didn't start until a bit after that. It's a good idea to bring a blanket or a small camp chair to sit on (but please be mindful of the people behind you). Also good to go early if it's one you really want to see so you can save a good seat. Also also good (lol) to bring a jacket or a blanket since it can get chilly. Street and lot parking nearby.

It is first come, first served. The staff were nice and the concession prices were reasonable. Then we noticed a sign and realized tonight was the second of six Thursday nights of free Waterfront Flicks. The film, which was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty this evening, is shown at the Ferry Lawn area by the ferry terminal. A portable screen is set up at one end of the lawn area with speakers set-up on both sides of the area. People take up there spots on the lawn with blankets or lawn chairs. They have two food booths selling hot dogs, snacks and beverages. Since we were not prepared to watch a movie tonight, we'll be back in a future date to catch a free flick. It was cool this evening and since the location is open to the estuary/bay, dress warmly.

Saw Sinners here a year ago, great experience, friendly and helpful staff, and great atmosphere…read more But I went to see an early screening of Steven Spielberg's "Disclosure Day" on June 20th. Movie started at 4:00pm, something was iffy with the audio, so they had to go through testing, which delayed the start of the movie. First 30 minutes of the movie, everything was going fine. Audio was kinda quiet, but not too bad. And then, as soon as the movie was escalating, and transitioning right into a big car chase set piece, the audio cut out. For a whole 5 minutes, there was no audio. We tried to get help, but every employee outside of the auditorium shrugged and said "someone is probably working on it" PROBABLY???? WHAT???? Not helpful at ALL. Completely incompetent idiots. We tried to get SOMEONE to notify the person in charge of the projector but they stared at us with no help. After that 5 minutes, the audio came back... for 4 seconds. For another 7 minutes, the audio just kept cutting IN AND OUT AND IN AND OUT. We ended up just leaving and getting a refund. I'm guessing the audio remained screwed up because there were about 50-60 other people in that theater who walked out in complete frustration. I even saw someone throw their drink onto the carpet. People walked past me saying "fucking shit show" and "can't fucking believe this" and it was in fact a complete shit show. I would be surprised if they just cancelled the screening after 90% of the crowd left. I'm surprised there are no reviews talking about this disaster considering the amount of people who were in that theater. I don't know what the employees were doing, I don't know if they were high or something, but holy shit were they incompetent. Someone needs to be fired over this whole thing considering the amount of refunds that needed to be processed that day. And it really REALLY hurts to say all of this, because the experience I had with this place a year ago watching Sinners was phenomenal. As a recommendation, they have to be more careful with who they hire. And they should tell their employees that when there is a persistent issue, that they should actually fucking do something or NOTIFY someone about it. Not just stand, stare and say "someone is PROBABLY fixing it." Rant over. At least the popcorn is delicious.
