The theater #1 is so big. There's a balcony section. I've never been up there. This is big-Toy Story 5! Conan's voice is the poop machine. I didnt know till the credits. Everyone becomes a kid again. Ok, only those before Gen Z. I recognize all the familiar toys because in the olden days, there was Toys R US and you just go through the store, like a museum, admiring things you can't buy but want to buy. There's a fabulous collection of horses. Divert, the theater has slighted seats. Love sitting on the side with nobody in front blocking. Chairs are still comfortable. Cup holder. The sound system is not deafening. The newer theaters blast you with sound. You go away deaf. Wine and beer sold. Drinks galore. Women's restroom -There's always a line but kept clean. Close to japantown so when you finish there's so many places to eat. read more

Watched "Wicked: For Good" here. The parking garage just below the theater was a convenient place to park. Note: they no longer validate parking. However, $11 for a few hours or parking wasn't bad considering the ease of finding a space and proximity to the theater. It was nice to see security (SFPD) at the front door. The theater's facilities feel outdated compared to other venues out there. Its age is very apparent. The old, creaky cloth seats were a quite distracting when anyone around you moved a bit. The movie screen and sound system were fine though. Consessions - the popcorn was just OK. 1/2 of our large container was just crumbs. Perhaps they scooped from the bottom? The sugar-free ginger ale was empty at one of the self-serve soda machines. Despite all this, it was still good to be at the historic AMC Kabuki 8 theater which has been around for over 50-60 years. Got the opportunity to watch the Eternity movie premiere two weeks before it is released in theaters and it was so good! I cried twice. It was so heartfelt and sad/happy at the same time. We luckily got to sit on the balcony in theater 1 which had the best seats. The theater is so clean and has reclining seats and the staff is super nice too. I love the location of this theater because it is in the heart of Jtown and surrounded by yummy food and fun stores. There is also street parking around the neighborhood and a decent parking garage. read more

This was my first time ever going to this theater and wow what a great impression! Friday night we got a late show at 10:30 PM of The Smashing Machine, then Saturday we saw One Battle After Another, Friday night's showing was in a smaller theater, I want to say number 8, but every seat in the house had a good view! Saturday night movie was on a much bigger screen, and we had great seats as well! I truly love their updated seats and the way their larger seats with more room to move around in. We already ate before we went to the movies, but the popcorn, as well as the bar looked very appetizing! Lol popcorn smelled amazing and I really thought it was cute. They had a bunch of retail items for kids! Well, kids at heart as well! Hee. The only thing I would say that was somewhat, I only found one set of women's restroom on the left side of the theater with four bathrooms inside. As our Saturday night movie got out I was lucky enough to get into the bathroom before the Line reached out and around the corner! Meh, this place could use an upgrade. Escalators are broken. Seats are creaky. Bathrooms could use a scrub. I can get past all this. But what is th most egregious part of our experience?!?!? They won't sell me a side of nacho cheese. I don't want nachos, I just want a side of cheese for my popcorn (leave me alone, it's delicious). I had to buy nachos and leave the chips. First time here as I was really waiting for a good movie to come out before I came here to view it :) Inside was quiet and clean. Easy check-in through my phone. Food/drinks were upstairs on the other side of my theater but easily accessible. Bathrooms also everywhere so you can go close to your theater and not all the way on the other side. Inside the theater was clean, small, and intimate. I would much rather prefer a smaller theater with 20-30 spacious seats with gaps in between as opposed to a bigger one with hundreds that are corralled like cattle. The floor wasn't sticky and the room didn't reek of soda and popcorn, which is something I'm grateful for. The movie screen was the perfect size for the room we were in, and I had an amazing experience. Because I have sciatica, I appreciated being able to comfortably move around in my seat without bothering anyone next to me (the seats were vacant anyway). The seats had good armrests and plenty of space for your food. Would definitely return again if a movie I really wanna see comes to theaters. The price was also reasonable for both the movie and the food/drinks. Cheaper than Cinemark and better quality/taste. read more

The seats are standard older rockers, and the screens are on the smaller side, giving it a more personal, indie vibe similar to the nearby New People Cinema. read more

It's been a few years since my last review here but they've made some upgrades and most importantly the popcorn has been fixed. It's been warm and fresh the past couple of times I've been here which was a big gripe I had in the past. Since my last review, they got rid of the $6 Tuesdays and now offer 50% off standard tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesday's. You can either go on the amc app or purchase a ticket in person (which is my preference). To get the deal you have to have an amc account, but when purchasing in person, you just need to enter the email address associated with the account. For two people it was around $18 on these discount days. The concessions, while having better popcorn, is still quite expensive. It was over $21 for a large popcorn and large drink. While theater prices have always been high, it's higher than other theaters I've been to recently. As for the theaters. It's really hit or miss, just depends on what theater you get. The main one has comfy seats, so going around the premiere of a blockbuster type movie will most likely land you in theater 1. Better screen and sound for sure. The other theaters are basic at best, with the screens on the smaller side, relative to the size of the theater itself. Overall, with ticket prices being so high and food prices where they are at, Tuesday and Wednesday's is the only time I'd consider going just to grab the discounted price. read more

Conclave was an unexpectedly great thriller, which we enjoyed this past weekend at the AMC Kabuki 8. The lobby decor and setup was absolutely lovely at this theater. The concessions stand had a nice variety of food items on the menu, as well as self-serve butter dispensers for popcorn, and coco cola freestyle machines offering customizable drinks. The grape fanta zero was tasty and satisfying. The seating inside the auditorium was all clustered together, close enough so that heads in front of you could easily block your view if there's a tall person in the next row. And the seats didn't recline and barely leaned back, but at least they were clean and intact. The widescreen presentation had clear sound and picture, which made for a decent viewing experience. read more

I'm really glad the AMC Kabuki 8 is still here. Tonight after having some Japanese food nearby, I saw a preview of " Another Simple Favor " tonight at the theater. The screening was in Theater 2 which was cosy for the select group of attendees to see the May 1 to-be-released AmazonPrime-MGM Studios movie. It was an awesome film! I sat in a Comfy seat. The screen size was just perfect to show off the beauty of Capri, Italy - the movie was set in a stunning hotel on this Amalfi Coast island. The hotel will be THE NEXT Italian destination WEDDING location! Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Allison Janney and other fine actors in this film. Blake's clothing and particularly her wedding dress in the movie were gorgeous! " Another Simple Favor " was a cross between Agatha Christie + Under the Tuscan Sun. Pure eye candy! After the preview screening, attendees also were given a gift! Such a good experience! This AMC is located in Japantown, with eight show rooms spreading across three levels. The largest room across main level and upper level, and there's bar seating outside the balcony level. The room is huge although the screen is relatively too small for such a big space, and the balcony level is very far away from the screen, and views from seats in the front row are partially blocked near the bottom. read more

Love the theater and location, but bizarre experience tonight. Saw the 7:45 movie, which let out around 10:30. Security guard comes in during the credits (my friend and I typically watch through to the very end), shining his flashlight up down the aisles, in the area behind the screen, and slowly walking through the theater as though looking for someone or something (if he was merely looking for people, it was plain to see my friend and I were the only ones there). He clearly saw us but said nothing initially and kept looking around. Then, after standing at the end of our aisle staring at us silently for a minute, he interrupted and ordered us out before the credits ended, saying the theater was closed and "there are no credits" (the credits were playing, so what he clearly meant was there's nothing after the credits). It was very odd - have never had this happen at a theater, and given he had what looked to be a visible gun or taser on his hip, it really soured the mood. Also, when we left, we saw him in the lobby where people were loitering and talking (despite the theater supposedly being so closed that we had to be escorted out by armed guard before the credits ended) and he didn't say anything to them whatsoever. Just a really bizarre and uncomfortable end to the night. To be clear, if a theater employee came in and clearly wanted to get a head start on cleaning, that would be one thing. But this was an utterly bizarre occurrence. read more

AMC is simply the best theatre to experience a movie in. The environment and value are second to none.

Haven't been here in awhile since it was Sundance cinema like 12 years. It was nice that they had a separate bar away from the popcorn. Came here with mom and we had a strawberry margarita and it was so good the bartender was really sweet and gave us a nice amount of flavor and tequila for our drinks. We saw mission impossible and the escalator was being worked on we were on the 3rd floor and it was either the stairs or the elevator. We took the elevator because the stairs was a bit of a steep hike. The seats were comfortable and the screen was really nice. Got popcorn gourmet cheddar cheese was really good! read more

It's been quite some time since I've been to this theater. Last time it was still a Sundance theater. In that time, it's lost its luster for me. It didn't seem to gleam like it had before. The concessions didn't have the offerings that set it apart before and the "gourmet" popcorn was a flop and I couldn't eat it and took it back after I filled up my drink. They still charged me for a new popcorn when I gave that one back. There is no shortage of movie theaters to go to so I'll stick to the Metreon in the city. read more

This place is convenient and I have no high expectations from a theatre aside from just being there. However, I was there Friday night for a late showing of The Housemaid. A man in front of us complained and yelled out if we were going to talk the entire movie. We were not loud at all and he was overreacting, but I thought my interaction with him would diffuse the situation. Instead he brings the theatre security to come in and "watch" us. I felt like a kid in time out. I was on a date and didn't want to disrupt the rest of the movie and everybody else in the theater but it bothered me A LOT that the security chose to stand at the edge of our aisle and watch us. It was distracting and disrespectful. He took the command from that patron to the extreme. Was he paid to protect the irate man? Who knows? I contacted AMC and nothing was done to fix this but rather I was sent a code of conduct and policies in their auditoriums. Again, I felt criminalized. It really ruined my movie experience. I was so bothered, I don't even know what the hell happened in the movie. read more

Today I came for a movie and the cashier was totally unprofessional . He offended me in many ways . When I was inside the movie theater during the previews I decided to leave it was 20 Minutes before the movie begins . But when I csmeback to this bad employe ,he told me that after calling to the manager that they cannot giveback the refund because I used the reward to buy the ticket ,and of course ,because of all this manipulations and unwelcoming attitude I defused the free pass . I watched Inside Out 2 the Tuesday after release day in the main auditorium in the balcony section. It was the first time I've sat in the balcony section - it's different and kind of nice change of pace to not be looking up at the screen but rather head on. The audience was really engaged and laughing. They even had short bursts of applause in the middle. Popcorn was piping hot. Unfortunately some escalators were down so we had to walk up and down those stairs to the balcony seat. The escalators from the ground level to the concessions was also closed... The bar wasn't open. Bathroom situation after the show took a while - about ten minutes of waiting. I thoroughly enjoyed the theater though and the skyline is gorgeous as you exit from the balcony floor. I really enjoy coming here for their discount Tuesdays for $7 movie. I came here this past week with my friends to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The movie was pretty empty since it was New Year's Eve but we still had a good time enjoying the movies! I'm glad this location is still open even though the Van Ness location closed. read more

Came on a Sunday for the world premiere of Kintsukuroi, a film about the Internment camps. Directed and written by Kevin Berk. First time to this theater in the heart of Japan town. We found parking on the street pretty easily a few blocks away on a Sunday early afternoon. The theater has a concession stand and a seperate bar area. Nice to see Japan town seems to be doing well post Covid. A beautiful sunny day in San Francisco. read more

I've had good experiences at Kabuki before, but my most recent visit was not so great. I attended the Goofy Movie 30th Anniversary screening at 12:30. It's been sold out online for weeks. Kabuki should have been fully staffed up, however, they were not. The concessions line was still about 30 folks deep when the movie started and their bar wasn't even open for folks, like me, who just wanted a soda. Seems like a major fail having known that 100's of folks were coming to your theatre for both showings. The actual event Disney put on was great, but Kabuki just doesn't have the staffing capable of handling such a large event. read more

Nice clean cinema right in Japantown, AMC Kabuki 8 Is a great venue for film festivals. I watched Dev Patel's 'Monkey Man' as a matinee and enjoyed the Ranch flavored popcorn. Wow, has AMC proven that they can take a jewel (the Sundance Cinema) and run it completely into the ground. The theaters are pretty disgusting. But let me be clear, the problem isn't the staff. It's an aging infrastructure the AMC is bleeding dry until they run out a lease, I presume. I went to a 5:30 showing with 25 minutes of previews, followed by ads for coke and various branded stuff. Solid half hour after the advertised film start. When AMC first took it over, there was this promise of a similar experience to the Sundance experience. It's clear they will never invest in this venue. So it is perplexing that they continue to charge like they are a premium venue. Heartbreaking. This should be a $2 second-run theater. This theater obviously has declined since Sundance owned it. It has been many years. It just worsens. AMC has now put in 2 different levels of lines for concessions. One line is for specific loyalty members while the other line is for all other customers. Yesterday, a Saturday at 12:00pm,, there was only one cash register open. The loyalty line gets served express. They don't take the regular customers until that line is empty. We were there with many other customers waiting while the other line people showed up with no wait for a long time. They don't value their customers or the customer experience. It's dreadful. I really like this movie theatre because its so dang cute. From the glass ceilings and great views to the single person escalators. I appreciate that the theatres aren't too big so every seat feels "good". Normally, the front seats are too close but we had no problem in the third row. Haven't been to the theater since the pandemic, and since Godzilla, King of the Monsters. That was a different AMC, and even longer since going to the Kabuki. Well, Godzilla Minus One was good, and the Kabuki is in good shape, if nearly deserted at the first showing on a weekday. Popcorn was fresh and not recycled from the previous day, no lines, no annoying people talking, overall a great return to the picture show. read more

I'd probably give 3.5 stars, but who would care. I went there for a French film this weekend. It was well run, but had a cramped interior space. The line for concessions on the second landing, and the drink stations, blocked access to the restrooms. There's only one men's room on that level, and it was blocked off for some reason. I didn't know any alternatives, but I'm sure they must exist either above or below. The theater was comfortable, with no issues for picture or sound. What made the experience bizarre was the very heavy attendance by Swifties, for the New Era tour movie. Girls and young women wearing everything from prom dresses to cowboy jumpers, and cars pulling up out front all evening, disgorging or picking up girls. During the quiet moments of my film, we could easily hear them yelling in an adjacent theater. I didn't mind. I don't understand why, after all the criticism, AMC theaters continue to show that Nicole Kidman short, trying to persuade people to go to the theater they're already sitting in. When it started, I couldn't help myself; I shouted "we're already here!" and got a good laugh. The best thing about this theater is the location, in the middle of J-town, with lots of places to eat and drink nearby, even after a late show. read more

It's been a while since I came to this theatre. Today we watched the first showing of Mission Impossible at 10:45 am and the doors opened at 10:30 am. The theatre was small and cozy, about 5 to 6 rows. Bear in mind, when you reserve seats there are spaces between the seats. Picture the spaces as tables where you can place your popcorn etc and drinks. Note - As it's a smaller theatre , the screen is also smaller. Overall staff were friendly and welcoming. Great Matinee prices for first and second shows. Also, senior discount kicks in at 60+ $11.95. Nice theatre with lunch or dinner conveniently located at the mall. read more

Went here to watch a pre-screening for John Wick 4. Amazing movie btw. The theme of the movie theater matched the movie well. It was actually my first time at this movie theater and it takes me back to japan. There was a balcony but it was closed off that night.
