A small place
in the middle
of nowhere
with a lot to teach
The Prudence Island Learning Center is part of the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve and is located in South Island Park. Just a just small building but one that has various education and entertaining exhibitions. Lots of different indigenous animals like foxes, deer, hawks, herons and ospreys are shown in natural poses and habitats and tanks of fish, crustaceans and other marine critters are also present. Of course none of the animals were intentionally harmed for the displays, the animals shown all died of natural causes.
The center is open during the summer during the week from 9-3 and and welcomes people to come in and learn about the island and Narragansett Bay. Occasional lectures and classes are given and continual research ensures that the displays and exhibits are changed. Outside is a is a flutterfly garden that you can walk through and observed the flowers and flutterflies.
Just a small building but there is no admission charge. A pleasant place to stop, take a break and learn something about ecology or oceanology. Besides, they are the only place on the entire island that has cold water and bathrooms, which is probably why most people end up stopping in the first place. read more
