While It is fun to just drop stuff on the ground and leave, it's always so busy because they make their hours of operation so ridiculous that everybody shows up at the same time and it gets constipated in that big building. And they limit the kind of things you can throw away there, while also wanting you to gently put it on a soft pile of crap in order to remove all fun from the experience while they wobble their hard hats on the top of their heads with glee at your disappointment. You will leave covered in dust, dirt, and a gnarly stench... like you're a damn zombie or something! You can also smell the place from miles up the road. Reminds me of my house.

Whether you've got some household hazardous waste, used motor oil or just a bunch of trash to get…read morerid of, it's convenient to just load it in your truck and head to the SPSA Transfer Station. The transfer station receives waste from the city's municipal haulers as well as private waste haulers so depending on when you show up with your load of waste you may have to wait in line to dump it. The wait is usually not too long, about twenty minutes is the longest I've had to wait. You just pull up to the scale house window and tell the employee what you've got then get in line to dump it. There is signage to guide you. Make sure you wait to drive in to the drop off area until another employee gives you the signal to do so. You just throw your stuff out and an employee will use the wheel loader to push it where it needs to go. Be careful because the area can get slippery and of course the place smells like garbage so be ready for that too. The employees are polite and helpful so don't hesitate to ask for help if you're not sure how to proceed. Be sure to check out their website too because it's full of helpful information.

This venue is obviously much nicer - climate controlled, cleaner with modern upgrades and facilities, and even a snack room (with vending machines only). I visited this facility 7 times in August/September for jury duty - even the jury waiting room is nice. It's roomier than the old courthouse's jury waiting room and the city employees I've encountered there are pleasant and helpful. If there's one complaint I have, it's the "no cellphones allowed" rule. I understand the reasons why, but maybe restricting them from just the courtrooms (this is coming from a juror's perspective, mind you) would hold better value. As a potential juror, waiting around with only HGTV on the tv is a drag. At the least, I can use my phone to read, listen to music (or podcasts), and even get some work done. I know I can bring my own reading material (which I did), but who wants to carry extra stuff to a venue when there's no immediate parking? The closest garage is MacArthur Center - the walk isn't bad at all. But I don't want to carry any more than is necessary. I ended up doing so only because I couldn't bring in my cell. There are lockers at the first floor lobby, but I never carry change. And security is inconsistent when it comes to the metal detector and what you can and cannot bring in (i.e., medication and types of water bottles). Oh well, I will chalk up my jury duty as a learning experience. I learned plenty about our justice system as well as the Norfolk General District Court. The facility is fantastic, but getting inside is an inconvenience. Luckily for me, it's not an everyday thing. JV

They offer free classes for high school or college students needing to learn PowerPoint and other work or school related programs. Copy & printers available, private study rooms, computers, this little library seems to have it all. They have a dedicated children's area in a separate area that has plenty of learning activities, toys, books, DVDs & computers. You can rent several books and DVDs at a time which we take full advantage of. They offer free classes for all children ages at different times throughout the year- my toddler loved attending where they read stories and had fun learning activities. Register online for the free toddler classes. Bathrooms are clean and have baby changing stations. This month they will be having the "Teeny Tiny Farm's Baby Zoo" which we are excited to atrend !

The does offer the usual with fiction, non-fiction and a large children's section. A bunch of computers are available for use, though I think you do need to be a resident to use those. As well, do you really want to be touching the keyboard that all sorts of people have been using? I found a table with power and used this library as my afternoon office. The wifi worked well and it was mostly quiet enough that I could get some emails done and such. Because of the size of the library, quiet Zoom meetings weren't going to work from inside but the wifi reached to the van where I was able to complete my last call of the day and then depart. Overall, a great library for quiet study and reading that has a good selection of books available to be borrowed by residents. There are three branches to the city of Suffolk's library system: the Morgan Memorial Library in…read morethe downtown area, the North Suffolk Library, and the Chuckatuck Branch Library. I had already visited the first two branches numerous times but had never quite made it to the Chuckatuck Branch. I decided it was time to remedy that and made my way there recently to check it out. The Chuckatuck Branch is small and located on the outskirts of town, which -combined with their limited hours- is why I hadn't managed a visit yet. As you near the library situated next to Saunders Supply Company, you spot the sign, which screams, "We have internet!" Only in rural towns will you find libraries needing to broadcast this fact. The "parking lot" is small and not marked but trust me when I say you won't have any trouble finding a spot. Upon entering, a librarian looked up to greet me. She explained that the library has been recently refurbished. A little history on the place: back in the 1920s, a group of women wanted to open a library for the community. They began working at it, but sadly, it failed. Their dream was realized in 1983 thanks in great part to Saunders Supply Company who donated the site and building where the current Chuckatuck Library stands. This was definitely a group effort and brought to fruition in order to serve the more rural part of Suffolk. I spent a few minutes walking around to see what they had to offer; it didn't take me long. They have all of the usual genres--just not a large selection. However, you can always request books through the online catalogue and they will be sent over from other locations. There were a few computers being utilized as well and a room towards the back that perhaps holds small events. The biggest surprise was the shopping carts that are also over at the North Suffolk branch; it was somewhat humorous to see them in such a small library. It's difficult to give a rating to a place such at this. While it is extremely small and underequipped compared to the other branches--who am I to judge its value to the community it serves? If you decide to check it out, I recommend also combining the trip with a visit to Lone Star Lakes Park just around the corner. Books to ignite the mind; nature to soothe the soul.

This location still offers library events for kids, adults and families. There are programs available at various times and days. The staff is friendly and helpful. I have often seen my familiar staff from different locations at this spot. There is also a couple computers for use as well as a nice seating room in the back perfect for story time. The parking is small and limited. A busy program like the Eclipse viewing had me parking across the street at the store. Otherwise I have been able to park fairly close to the door.
