Whaaaatt????? 30 minutes or less, in and out and I got info, new plates and my Jeep in registered. AND the employee that helped me was so friendly and we talked to each other the entire time. They kept thanking me for my patience but they were the patient ones, having to deal with whatever tricky system issues they ran into. Props to them all! Automated check in for online appointments is very easy--you get a text reminder of your appointment when you make it online, you reply to that number with "check in" 15 minutes before your appointment, it texts you back with a ticket number, then you sit and wait til your ticket number comes up. The waiting area got quite cold as they had an industrial a/c running, so wear layers in summer/extreme heat times. The only recommendation I have is that it would be great to have some instructions posted next to the machine that you put your face/eyes on to take your eye test, both for how to do the test/use the machine and to sanitize it after each use. If the person instructing you isn't speaking loudly, it's hard to hear what you're supposed to do.

When I came to make that happen, someone drove into the DMV, so I was forced to go to another office. At the other office they informed me that I didn't have to register my car to VA due to military exemption. My husband registered his car here and retitled his car at this DMV. He was told there was a hold on his title and that he'd receive his title in the mail. After 3 weeks, I made him an appointment at the DMV as we hadn't received his new title and he had already paid for it. The appointment was at a different DMV. They informed him they hadn't correctly processed the title at this location and printed a copy for him on the spot. TL;DR: Avoid this place like the plague, unless you love wasting time!

My wife needed to renew her ID in person because they had to take an updated photo so we stopped in on a Tuesday morning around 9 o'clock without an appointment. Since she needed a new ID anyway we went ahead and upgraded to the new REAL ID which involves a little more documentation and paperwork than the standard ID. Like us, most of the customers didn't have an appointment but things moved along pretty swiftly. The staff was friendly and helpful and very efficient. We were in and out in twenty minutes. My wife was happy with her picture on her ID that she received in the mail about a week later. This is not the DMV we knew many years ago. They have made many improvements over the years and since fully opening back up after the COVID 19 pandemic restrictions.

Visited this DMV twice…read more The very first thing the staff asked me for was my 'green card.' I am a U.S. citizen, and I had my valid U.S. passport with me. They didn't ask me about my citizenship status at all before making that assumption. Being asked for a green card right off the bat, without even being asked if I'm a citizen, made me feel like I was being judged by my appearance and treated as an outsider. It was uncomfortable and felt discriminatory, even if that wasn't their intention. I hope the staff can be trained to ask about citizenship status first, rather than assuming everyone who walks in needs a green card.

She showed me how to skip the no appointment line, which cut my time in half. I approached the security guard and told him I just wanted to give my plates in and he was also kind enough to give me a ticket on the express line. Everything was fast and smooth sailing. The only reason why I took a star away was because there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. Instead, they improvised and replaced it with facial tissue. Walmart is nothing but a 3m drive. For an establishment that oversees hundreds of people a day, toilet paper should always be on hand.

Don't get me wrong, this DMV is teeny in comparison to others nearby, but come early and you can get everything done quickly. Considering when I walked in at 10am this place was heaving and there wasn't a spare seat, I was seen to within 10 minutes of walking through the door, had my documentation uploaded onto the system, had my picture taken, and within the hour I'd taken my theory test and was on my way to getting the road test. I chose Smithfield as the area is a lot more relaxed (and quieter) then taking the road test in town, but also because the customer service experience was far more superior. All desks were occupied, people were seen to in a timely manner, the flow was smooth and people weren't waiting all day for walk ins. I highly recommend this DMV, whether it's to take your theory / road tests, updating your license or documentation, even coming in for a copy of your birth certificate or to sign up for TSA Pre-check, it's worth driving the extra miles than waiting all day.
