They do have some long-term residents, but they limit the number, so most of the sites are for short-term stays. The owner is super friendly and welcoming. The gift shop has a surprisingly nice selection of gifts, along with camping essentials. The laundry and showers were clean, and there are two buildings with laundry and showers, which was really convenient since our site was toward the back of the park. We were also near the fenced dog park. The pool was a great way to cool off. They really embrace the USA theme, with a flag painted on the bottom of the pool, a Statue of Liberty, and even a pond shaped like the USA. Active military stay free, which is a nice touch. The rates were reasonable, and we took advantage of pretty much everything the park had to offer. The only thing we missed was the Cowboy Cookout/Texas BBQ. Unfortunately, we arrived on Sunday--the one day they don't offer the BBQ dinner. This was our second stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

They also put us in the last row, site 108 so our view is of the Desert scrub, it's very quiet back here. They did offer a barbecue dinner. I will post that menu, but we did not partake as we're trying to finish the food in the camper before we get home. We paid $66 per night for full hook up pull through site. This park is just a few miles from downtown Gallup and there are plenty of little restaurants and art galleries and such. There is also an Anytime Fitness about 5 1/2 miles away that will do a day pass. I did a separate review on that. I noted two different laundry areas and the price is very reasonable at $1.50 for a wash and $.75 for the dry. We did not need to do laundry while here so I cannot come on the effectiveness of the machine I noted that they have refreshed the pool very nicely! As well as I don't recall the water feature being there last time, but they have a cute bear fountain. There is also a dog park in the back corner. Our utilities worked great, staff was friendly, and we will always request a private site.

I wont go into details, but it is worth the trip to come see this place at-least once in your lifetime and feel the energy that is here. We came in through the south rim off the 57. It is about a good 20 mile drive on a rough dirt road. I would not recommend driving here in any low profile vehicles or when it is raining because you will get stuck in the mud. Make sure your tires are good. Some patches are very rough and you will literally need to drive around 15mph. Once you reach near the visitor center there is paved road again. The loop is all paved and individual parking sites with restrooms are located in every site and will lead you on the trails. The hikes are moderate, but look out for snakes. The visiting section has a gift shop, really nice restrooms and they will provide all the info you may need. Entrance fee was only $25.

I did not expect it would be snow covered fields and roads…read more The road leading up to this place no matter where you're coming from Highway 40 or Highway 25, eventually turns into a dirt road. Because it was frozen with snow on top our drive was pretty slow - 35 mph. I cannot imagine if it was a rainy day, all that mud. Don't come here if you don't have high suspension or at least an all-wheel-drive vehicle. We came here and had less than an hour left. The Ranger said we can drive the loop and see as many buildings as we can but we weren't able to see the large Pueblo. Still, it was worth it. Pictures turned out amazing. I did the junior ranger program booklet as fast as I could and I have to say it's one of the harder ones I've encountered if you were to finish the whole entire thing. I would come back here again, except when there's no snow that way you get to see way more of the architecture.

I visited here a few times in high school when I did volunteer trips to the reservation. We would…read morevisit Canyon de Chelly on our free day after a long week of work. Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a huge canyon park on tribal lands that was habited by several Native American peoples many years ago. There are many areas that you can explore that have overlooks, hiking trails and remains of ancient Pueblo villages. The biggest attractions are the 800-feet tall Spider Rock spire and the White House ruin. Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-SHAY) is located near Chinle in Northeastern Arizona. Even though it is a National Monument, the Navajo Nation entirely owns it. Around forty Navajo families live in the park. Other than the White House Trail, access to the canyon floor is restricted unless you book a tour guide. There are roads on both the North and South Rim where you can see ancient ruins and geologic structures. Canyon De Chelly has a visitor center with park rangers on hand and a gift shop. I was here recently and did the South Rim Drive. You can see ruins from the overlooks on South Rim Drive if you have binoculars. They are a little hard to see without them. This drive is the more popular side of the canyon because you can see Spider Rock and the White House ruin while on this road. On this drive are the Tunnel, Tsegi, Junction, White House, Sliding House, Face Rock and Spider Rock overlooks. Each overlook offers a unique perspective of the canyon floor and Navajo farmlands. We were able to do the White House Trail while here. It is the only trail that allows you to visit the bottom of the canyon without a guide. The hike is 2.5-miles round trip and descends nearly 600 feet to the canyon floor and back up. There are a few spots that can be a little slippery when raining. The end of the trail allows you to get up close to the White House ruin. This famous 1,000-year-old cliff dwelling was built by Ancestral Puebloans around 1060 AD. The White House has around 80 rooms and is named for the white plaster still visible on the walls. The hike itself isn't bad and worth it if you have some time. We had a nice time here at Canyon de Chelly. It brought back many memories of when I came here as a teenager. There are vendors at some of the overlooks that sell jewelry and other items. I wish we had more time to do the North Rim Drive to see the Massacre Cave Overlook. A sad event occurred here in 1805 when over a hundred Navajo people were murdered by the Spanish military while hiding in a cave.

I unfortunately didn't have time to go on a guided tour of Canyon de Chelly (it's located in the…read moreNavajo Nation, so you need to have a licensed tour guide to enter the majority of the Canyon), but I visited the welcome center, both the north and south rim drives, and hiked the White House Trail. The welcome center is staffed with NPS rangers and volunteers. There's a small gift shop and museum area with exhibits. There's also a hogan outside and you can ask the ranger to give a hogan talk and even enter it. The rim drives are gorgeous, although dusk and dawn really bring out the colors. The canyon rims are quite sheer which is different from a lot of other canyons. Pueblos can be seen from several lookouts, so bring binoculars. There tends to be people selling artwork and jewelry at the lookouts, so if you're interested, bring cash. The White House Trail is the only publicly accessible trail without a guide. It starts at the lookout, and you can see the structure from the parking lot, or decide to hike down to get a closer look (it's fenced off with a chain link fence to avoid people not respecting it). The hike is 2.5 miles round trip with little shade (although does have two cool tunnels), so bring water.

We had made reservations for 2 nights at El Morro, confirmed by an e-mail, and stating that we would receive an e-mail AND a text with the the code to our cabin several days before our arrival. We received NOTHING!! Attempts to reach anyone that could confirm that we had a place to stay by phone on the day of our arrival were fruitless. It took over an hour to finally receive a call from the owner. By That time we had made other plans, as the drive to El Morro without a confirmation that we had a place to stay was just too big of a risk. El Morro's failure to follow through on our reservation as they said that they would, along with the total inability to contact someone at the site that had a clue as to what was going on caused us to miss spending time with friends that we had not seen in over 30 years. There is nothing that can be done to replace that.....

We also got horse and cow noises, which I consider a bonus. The people here were SUPER friendly, sweet and helpful, and everything was so clean! The bathrooms and showers were spotless, spacious and felt very private. There's also a clean 24-hour laundry room, which is always appreciated on a road trip. The walking path through the lava fields was really cool and such a fun little extra. Friendly people, great facilities, very clean and a fun place to stay. I'd absolutely stay here again!

The gal said she could only put me in site six which was not close because nothing else was open and there were only 50 amp sites close to the building. We told her that we had a converter and that was not a problem. When we arrived and we saw where the site was, I walked back and asked the gentleman inside who accommodated us immediately. A fifth wheel pulled up next to us and unhooked everything only to find out that the sites in actuality only have 30 amp, not 50 amp so they had to hook everything back up and move to a different location. They were not happy. This stuff is pretty basic - it's important to know what sites can accommodate what type of vehicles. The park seems to be next to what looks like a stockyard. Not very appealing. On the upside, they have very nicely marked trails that you can walk with signs describing the various lava formations and we enjoyed that. The other upside is that they serve free pancake breakfast in the morning, which we did not go to, but it was nice offering and also have a kitchen at night so you can order food and they'll deliver it to your site. they have two dog sites. One is very small and the other is a little larger, both without grass. Just gravel. There's no shade and it's incredibly dusty. And people go through the park fairly quickly creating a lot more dust. Not sure what they could do about it. It's just the situation to be aware of. The restrooms were clean.

We really had no idea where they actually were. Each campsite was sold with electric and water, but while there were two electrical hookups there was only one water and one picnic table between the two sites. Crews picked up trash and cleaned bathrooms. Feral dogs were noted several times and prairie dogs had their holes everywhere. With that said, I would stay there again. Do not miss going to the Red Rock Museum. Alayna, the curate, was wonderful and very knowledgeable. The displays were great.

Imagine being in the grossest outhouse trying to do YOUR business. We took the dog off property and down the street. If you go here, do not open your windows at night. You will smell that sewage odor all night. Lastly, the wireless internet didn't work even though we were fairly close to the office. One plus: the bathrooms were spotless and THEY smelled just fine. That's why I added an extra star.
