The building itself is beautiful and just a short stumble from the Sheds in Eastern Market. My favorite night of all my experiences at RBHOA was the Secret Walls live mural competition. It was an amazing night where (4) teams of 3-4 artists painted murals to be judged at the conclusion of the night by the crowd. Amazing to see the artists at work. Being that the building and events are sponsored by Red Bull there is always all you can drink Vodka Redbulls (plus a few other selections, miller light, gin & tonic, etc.) Great experience every visit. This is definitely a spot I like to introduce slowly to friends from outside of the city.

The building is basically a gentrified warehouse and the first floor is where the residents work. If you go on a Saturday, you can hang out with the resident artists and talk with them as they paint, etc. After that, head downstairs to the gallery. There, completed works are displayed next to a tiny number on a thumb tack that you can use to look up each work's price if you are interested. You can browse the whole gallery in about ten minutes, but the art in invariably outstanding and I highly recommend it. It draws from a lot of College of Creative Studies talent in Detroit, and a lot of the art has contemporary and urban undertones. I've heard that they also throw parties about once a month. I can't go to the one in July, but will update this review as soon as I'm able to attend! Stop by the Red Bull House of Art whenever you are in the Eastern Market!

They were featuring a local artist from Detroit at the time. The museum is big on the outside but inside there isn't many pieces of art. It's contemporary which I enjoy. The other portion of the museum is used for shows/events. I went a few weeks ago to see Terri Lyne Carrington and Mickalene Thomas do a collaboration. It was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I did see some junk but I also saw that someone has taken the junk and madenit into art installations which I enjoyed looking at and trying to interpret. I would suggest getting out of the car and walking around. 2 odd things that occurred while visiting: 1. 3 cats circled the car in front of us and refused to move. The driver had to get out of the car and physically move them. They were not afraid of people. 2. A woman was walking around the project wearing a picture frame around her neck like it wasn't odd... It's something to experience.

It's a little bit off the beaten path in the Eastern Market neighborhood, which, to me, adds to its artistic charm. I was happy to spend a little bit of time perusing the rest of the gallery and the staff was very kind and informative. There is a small parking lot just outside the entrance and street parking available on Russell as well. Heads up: if you use an Apple GPS to get there, it'll direct you to the back of the building, so you'll need to be one block over! Anyway, I loved my experience and I can't wait to see what other kind of exhibits rotate through here.

Great art gallery tucked back in a Hamtramck neighborhood near some municipal buildings. In fact,…read moreHatch Art's building used to be a police station; they still have a jail cell that they use to house rotating installations. The current jail cell exhibit is called Take One, Break 1 and is by a guy named Luke MacGilvray. There's a bunch of porcelain tchotchkes painted black with evil red eyes. Guests are encouraged to do just what the name says, shattering one knick knack and pilfering another. And they all have rolled up fortunes a la fortune cookies inside that seem to dwell on the sinister! Very unique, participatory exhibit! The main exhibit space has an old school phonograph and radio that might be playing classical, avant-garde rock or who knows what if you wander through on a Saturday afternoon. Currently, as of September 22 they're showing landscapes and leaf paintings by a pair of Deborahs, Friedman and Sukenic, Much more conventional than the craziness back in cell block 9 but very aesthetically pleasing work. There's generally a nice variety in the rotation here. Hatch Art likes to take chances but not everything is totally off the wall. I like that. They also have a poetry night I've never been to but might check out one of these Fridays and some funky patio chairs out front to chill in. Hatch Art also gets tons of respect from me for buying and working on renovating Hamtramck Disneyland, a wonderfully bizarre folk art installation behind the former home of the late Dmytro Szylak, a Ukrainian immigrant who built it up over 30 years before old age caught up with him and this huge structure with whirligigs and weirdness straddling two garages fell into disrepair. Hatch Art had to dismantle it all and is working on building it back up from the ground up. Hamtramck Disneyland is another review for another day and honestly, it's gone from five stars twenty years ago to two stars now but Hatch Art is working hard to fix that. One day HD will be back to something resembling it's former glory and then I will bang out a review here. Til then Hatch Art is having volunteer days on Sundays to refresh, rehab, repaint, rebuild, what have you. So if the spirit moves you head on down and help! (Maybe check their website first. Winter is coming. Hours may change. Life happens, ya know?) I put in a couple hours one recent Sunday and who knows, may find myself over there again.
