A couple issues with this place. But the biggest is their elevators. They are horrible, the slowest and least responsive elevators I've ever experienced. Got locked in BEFORE closing time, neither gate would open. Called and left 10 messages begging for them to let me out. They have yet to call me back. Oh yeah, there is a pedestrian walkout gate, but it's wrapped in chains and cannot be opened. I'm pretty sure that's a fire code violation. I have pictures with GPS and timestamps confirming this. Public Storage is a complete racket. The give you a price and then jack it up every month until you are paying double or triple what they first quoted. Also, they are never on property when you go buy. And lastly, no live person ever answers and they take forever to return a call. The truly suck. read more

I reserved a unit online, and it allows you to choose your move-in date, which I did. Since then, I've received multiple emails and a phone call saying I have to call them back and confirm the reservation or they'll cancel it. I've called back twice and can't get anyone on the phone. Not a good sign. read more

I had rented out a storage unit for the summer and when I got back to take back the items from the unit, I noticed that the one of the furniture pieces had water damage and also there were a lot of cockroaches as well inside my furniture. Not sure if maintenance is done at this place at all. I called customer service and they basically said that we are not responsible for all these issues. really disappointed read more

I went to inform that I was going to move my things and I was told I would still be charged the entire month even though I was moving out the day my auto pay would be processed. Not cool!!!!! My experience with Public Storage in Austin has been subpar since day one. Lots of rules and very little concern for the individual. In comparison, I also rent from AllStorage in Fort Worth and have had a helpful and personable experience. The Challenge -- Public Storage recently bought AllStorage. It has been two months since the changeover, and the issues and challenges are already mounting -- such as billing mistakes, lack of phone call follow-up ("let me talk to my manager"), nonworking bathrooms on-site for two weeks, etc. My poor Public Storage experience of before has followed me! Moving is never easy and there are many complications associated with it. For example, for me it was finding as storage facility that was convenient, clean, and customer service oriented. Deborah here at Public storage was amazing. Easy to deal with, very kind and personable. She had me in and out of signing the lease within minutes. Very dissatisfied that my storage monthly cost went up about 20% after my first 6 months there. There was no mention of that at all when I secured the storage unit. In fact they were very vague when I asked them about price increases. It seems this company is running a bait and switch type of business. They start with a reasonable price but quickly raise it once you're moved in. I would not recommend this company unless you only plan for a very short stay. read more

Careful if your uses are time sensitive. April/Public Storage breached their contract today and changed access times without notice. When asked to explain why our access hours were being changed, April said there was a break in & the gate needed to be closed manually. Rather than pay someone to stay on site until 9pm (the end of guaranteed access), April was closing at 5p, and insisted we be out by 5p as well. She would not give us a minute longer after we plead for more time while trying to rush-finish our job. We had to leave the job halfway done & will have to come back tomorrow, and now have to pay 4 laborers for 2 days instead of 1 day, and for 2 days of box truck rental instead of 1, plus twice the gas and twice the time off of work where I could be making money instead of spending it. Things happen, but it's a matter of how it's handled that determines if a customer is happy. Well, I'm not happy. This cost to me could have been avoided with advanced notice that my contracted access times had been changed. It was a breach of contract that saved Public Storage 4 hours of labor and costs me over $500. I have left messages with customer service, so we'll see if public storage offers concessions. I'll revise my review if they do what is right. read more

I moved my things into my storage unit in February of this year. At the time the unit was renting for $59 per month. That was the regular rate not a short term discounted rate. Five months later they increased the rate to $98 per month. While the agreement allows them to increase the rental rate, a 70% increase in 5 months is ridiculous. That is nothing short of bate and switch. When I questioned the increase I was told that they were within their rights to increase the rent as much as they want when the want. Now that's great customer service isn't it? The facility is in fairly good shape, the storage unit was clean, and the people there are helpful. Just watch out for the bait and switch on rental rates. read more

Here's my fun little story about my experience with Public Storage. Late this summer, my roommate and I were storing some furniture here between move out and move in dates from our old apartment to our new one. the night before our movers came, I took some stuff over to PS to put in our unit, just to have it all out of the way. I was running close to their closing time, so I schlepped my stuff into the space, and went for the exit. I entered my exit code, and I got a message that said it was past the 9 pm exit deadline, access denied. I looked at my phone: 8:57. Frantic, I called the 1-800 on their sign, and got in contact with a representative. She sounded like she could get me out of this mess, I just needed get some information from the name on the account, my roommate. She said she would wait while I called my roommate on the other line. I called her, got the information I needed, and switched back over to the rep. She had hung up. I called back, only to get another rep. I explained to him my situation, that I had already talked to someone, that she had asked me to get authorization to access the account, and that I had all the info. I gave to him, and he put me on hold. He came several minutes later, and told me to drive to the exit gate and try a certain code. I did. Nothing. He told me to hold again, that he was going to try and call the regional manager. A moment later he returned, telling me that the manager had not answered "So," he said, "I guess I'm going to recommend that you call the police and see if they can get you out." ARE. YOU. JOKING?! I questioned him as to how the company doesn't have an emergency code for these circumstances. Every question I threw at him he would respond first with "Right...", and then with some convoluted, bullshit answer. these customer service people are really lowest common denominator. I hung up the phone, and called the police. I explained my situation, gave them my location, and asked if they could get me out. "Yep. An officer will be there soon." It was, in total, a three minute conversation. So I drove around to the front gate to wait for the officer. I had been waiting for around twenty minutes when a truck, followed by a U-Haul pulls up to the code pad at the entrance gate. "Poor guys," I thought, "they're about to be disappointed." I watched as they punched in their code, and then, shocked and infuriated, I watched as the gate opened for them. I looked at the clock: 10:28. Nearly an hour and a half after their entrance/exit gates are supposed to close, these guys drove in, no problem. I jumped at the opportunity, and sped out the open entrance gate. I called the police to cancel my officer request. They asked the reason I no longer needed assistance, and I explained what happened to them, to which the dispatcher responded, "Are you kidding me?" I was willing to accept that perhaps my phone was wrong, and I was trying to leave past the designated time. However, that flew out the window the minute I watched someone gain entrance well past the designated gate-lock time. I will absolutely never be using this, or any other Public Storage facility again. Thanks for the ridiculousness. read more

Tried to reserve a unit on-line as my crazy work schedule doesn't really allow for dropping by to do this. I received a message around 6:30 PM stating I need to call them back by 9:30 AM to keep my reservation. I called at 9:32 AM the next day and the girl that answered was quite rude and advised the reservation was cancelled the night before (so why tell me I have until 9:30 AM to call?). I have been a customer with another Public Storage location since May of 2011. Trying to coordinate getting a new unit with this location has not been pleasant. Did I mention they will also call you three times a day once you make an-online reservation? Looking at the other reviews posted here I shouldn't be surprised by the service I received. read more

Moving from another public storage and the manager Alice refuses to either transfer my balance from a much higher rent unit over, or possibly waive the $25 set up fee since I'm an existing customer or give me the new customer promo. So which is it? Am I a new customer, or a valued customer transferring units. Well because of Alice I will be neither. My total cost to move to a $44 unit from a $157 one? $99. Which would be ok if I had a few more days to do it, if I can't make it today because I have school work I'm behind on since I had to rearrange my life to hide from a stalker, it will be $247. Had the worst experience every. I think the guys name is Nathan. I filled out a reservation online. I showed up at 5.00 pm along with a dozen other customers. Most customers were waiting out by the door. After 45 minutes he finally walks up. He was not on the property. Some customers got tired of waiting and left. We all lined up waiting for him to wait on us because of his tardiness. As we are waiting, he is talking to someone. He tells this lady that he needs help. They are short 4 people. 1 former employee who had a young child had a baby and couldn't find any babysitters so she didn't work out. The other 3 were complete dummies and didn't work out. I didn't know it was ethical or legal to spread that type of company information out in the open. When it became my time for him to take care of me, after he realized I was a reservation, he told me to step aside because he needed to help everyone else. I have been there close to an hour. When he had me walked in the rain to view the unit, I asked do I have to see the unit, he said it is mandatory. The unit was the furthest in the rear that they had. As I am walking, I noticed how dirty the place is. I asked him if the property is always this dirty and he said most of the time. Debris blows in was his excuse. I saw a lot of debris, cigarette butts, mattresses couches and large items. I do not know how several matresses that were laying around could have been blown in. I thought to myself, what rodents and bugs live and feed off the debris? Do I want to rent there and have them find a home in my storage unit? I decided to walk away. He didn't care. I would not rent from this place. If they do not take care of the facility or the clients, then your items that you place in their units will not be safe. read more

There was a huge pile of trash blocking the exit drive as if somebody just dumped a giant unit out. Had to move stuff to get big truck through. Still clean inside building, Update: After the first year giant piles of trash, furniture and junk were always around the corner you had to use to get to the exit. There was usually trash in front of the sliding doors to the building. read more

They will force you to buy things like boxes and damp check even though you tell them you don't need.These people will steal your money and will not give you a refund. They charged me for a lock without asking me and gave me a higher insurance price than the one I ask for. Terrible business place!!! read more

Storage Unit Broken Into Here's the quick points - STORAGE UNIT WAS BROKEN INTO AND ITEMS WERE STOLEN - No security cameras inside the buildings. - This location adds a lock to your reservation and charges you $20 for it. Then you have to go into the office to get a refund. - Public storage will charge you on the 1st of the month even if you have already paid your initial reservation fee. - You have to talk to the office manager and potentially a district manager to get refunds on the monthly dues. - Employees are unhelpful if you use your own lock or don't buy liability insurance from them. I reserved a unit at this Public Storage location for about a month in July and August. Reserving my unit was extremely easy and painless. I was able to reserve my unit, pay, and get my access code all online without having to talk to or see anyone. One thing to be aware of is that they will include a lock on your reservation and charge you around $20 for the lock, you have to go to the office to return the lock and get a refund if you are using your own lock. Another thing to be aware of is that rent is due on the 1st of the month even if you don't move in on the 1st. Your initial reservation fee covers the first 30 days of your rental unit but they will still charge you on the 1st of the month. I moved in on the 22nd of July and my reservation covered me from July 22nd to August 21st but I was charged on August 1st for rent from August 22nd to August 30th. This is in the lease but I don't think it was clearly spelled out. When I talked to the office, they were at least helpful enough to get me a refund. Here's where things get bad. I moved my stuff and left it there for about 14 days. When I went back to my unit someone had cut the lock that I put on and put their own lock on. The office was not very helpful and didn't believe me at first when I told them. I had to convince one of them to walk to my unit with me to see that it was not my lock. They also said they could not help because I didn't use the lock that they charged me for in my initial reservation. They said I would need to go to Home Depot and rent bolt cutters to be able to get access to my unit because they don't have bolt cutters. I don't believe that because they are able to cut locks off of units that have not paid for months. When I was finally able to cut the lock and get access to my unit, all of my stuff in the unit was rummaged through and my bike was stolen. Again, the office was unhelpful, they don't have any security cameras inside the building and were unwilling to help because I didn't buy liability insurance through them. I moved out the same day because I didn't want to risk it getting broken into again and losing more stuff. read more

POOR SECURITY. Public Storage at 8101 N Lamar, Austin Tx. Outside Unit broken into & items stolen within 2-days of being stored. Police report filed. Public Storage would not even replace the lock broken on their facility--I had to buy another lock from them. I tried to submit a review on the website for that Public Storage storage facility & the first 2 times it wiped out all or most of the review & after that it would not move the review document beyond the first section. **I stored items Thursday afternoon & Saturday afternoon someone called me and asked if I had forgotten to lock the unit. (I had not forgotten. Thieves had broken the lock off and stolen items.) Lock was missing but the damaged metal lock slider looked as if it had been at least partially beaten off., which should have caused a lot of noise. The thieves were selective; they unstacked & opened boxes as if they had no concern about being interrupted. **If security of your stored items is even a minimal concern, don't use this facility. read more

There are three Public Storage facilities within a few blocks of each other on Lamar north of 183. This review is of the one furthest north, on the east side. The neighborhood is pretty sketchy, and the unit is correspondingly cheap; if you don't mind this it's an okay storage facility. Their policy toward late fees, which is something I assume is a corporate decision, borders on a scam. For years I have paid all my bills through an online service. Public Storage waits until the 8th of the month to post my payment and charges a $20 late fee. When I went in to discuss it in person with the manager, he was arguing with a woman who had missed a payment. They have some weird compounding late fee, plus a separate fee which is a percentage of the monthly rent for the unit, plus bounced check fees, and some other charge that made no sense to me, putting this woman hopelessly in the hole. I realized I was lucky to just get docked $20. If I had any kind of financial crisis that rendered me unable to pay my bills they would be right there to make it worse. Apparently the old manager was too nice to stick it to the customers, so they got rid of him and brought in some enforcer-type guy to milk the maximum amount of fees from their customers. It must be some recession business strategy. I will probably move my stuff out, at great inconvenience to myself, and into a more expensive facility that is easier to do business with. read more

I am a return customer to this particular public Storage site. It's convenient and I appreciate the ease of renting and closing my account when needed. Aaliyah helped me get my climate controlled unit and IN THIS GOSH AWFUL TEXAS HEAT, she maintained a very personable, professional, intelligent and frankly just downright friendly personality, which is a major rarity these days.
