They were super accommodating and found time for an appointment with very short notice, and even called to let me move my time up as a chair had opened early. I often have issues with people cutting off more than I wanted, but Sarah listened to what I wanted, talked me through her plan, and I walked out looking exactly how I wanted. I can't praise Lala's talent and professionalism enough! After a last-minute injury left me unable to do my hair for a wedding, I called the salon in a panic. Thankfully, they squeezed me in for a Saturday appointment. Lala was an absolute gem, patient and understanding as I fumbled through describing what I wanted. She worked her magic, crafting a stunning half-up, half-down curled style that not only looked amazing but also held up flawlessly through windy strolls and hours of dancing. Scheduled an appointment with Ashley. I came in with shoulder-length hair and told her I wanted to keep as much length as possible before she cut 6 INCHES off the crown. My hair is now two completely different lengths and the layers are short and choppy. The stylist rushed through the process and didn't explain what she was going to do beforehand--if she had, I would've said no. Just got home and had to trim an inch off the front because it was uneven. I will not be returning. read more

Poor experience Went in for a hair trim to make my layers more visible. My hair ends were quite dry because I have had my hair dyed in the past. The stylist in charge told me she would take half inch off, then she said one inch because she moved on to another layer. When I went in, I had hair half-way down my back, and when i left I saw that my hair does not go even past my shoulders. Instead of the one inch, she took off at least 3-4 inches. Even while cutting my hair, she suggested that she dye my hair to get rid of the dryness which was caused by dyeing my hair in the first place again. All in all I am quite disappointed, I never got the trim I asked for, and my hair will take at least 3 months to grow the length it was at before. The problem is not the fact that she cut it, the problem is she said she will stick to 0.5-1 inches, but didn't do so. Edit: changed my review to one star because of horrendous customer service. The service isn't that bad. They just might not listen to your needs and could do something else. Its fine. Hair grows back. But If you express the fact that you are not satisfied, they might shame you on your character, and tell you that you are wrong, rather than just apologizing. Before I found Puccini's I would often go to Sports Clips and Super Cuts. Being a guy I wasn't asking for super intricate haircuts but they somehow always seemed to mess it up. Finding out about Puccini's was a breath of fresh air. Firstly, they are very professional. When you walk in you tell them you either have a reservation or just ask to be the next seated and almost every time I get asked if I would like a bottle of water or even a glass of wine (after showing ID of course). I've only ever waited a max of about 15 minutes to get seated with a stylist but the cuts are worth every minute. I don't usually have a preference for stylists as they are all amazing at what they do, but you can put in requests to get cut by the stylist of your choice. Every time I go I feel at home and am warmly welcomed by whichever stylist is ready to seat me. I used to be super picky about how my hair was cut but after frequenting Puccini's as many times as I have, I feel confident in letting the stylist take over and I have always been very satisfied with my cuts. I would say that the customers are more males than females but the stylists do specialize in females hair as well. Overall, I would highly recommend Puccini's to anyone who wants a quality cut for around $20 (for men). The stylists seem to love working there and the customers seem to love it equally as much. read more

I was feeling impulsive and my hair was gross and breaking and i haven't gotten it cut in a year, so I walked in and Sandra cut my hair, and did SUCH a fabulous job. After a few months in quarantine, my hair was a mess and I needed to get a cut. I figured that every hair salon would be booked, and understood that I would still probably have to wait a while. I called Puccini, and they worked with me to get their quickest availability (only two days wait). However, they were really flexible and offered to try and get me in even sooner for a day-of appointment (despite being totally swamped and having to run at half capacity). Within thirty minutes, they had an opening and got me in. Mary Beth was awesome, she was very casual and great to talk with, but obviously professional with the haircut. I told her exactly what I wanted, but ended up changing my mind mid-way through the cut. That was no problem for her, and she took some extra time to make sure that the details for the fade and undercut looked exactly the way I wanted. Overall, Puccini is a really great hair salon. It's the first salon I've felt really good about going to since coming to college and leaving my hometown hairstylist. My only regret is not going there sooner as a Pitt student. For a price which is comparable to SuperCuts and SportsClips nearby in Oakland, the treatment that I got was amazing! I'll be coming back in the future. read more

I got my hair dyed and cut here last week. I had a very specific image of what I wanted so I called ahead and sent them the pictures before coming to make sure they could do exactly what I wanted. When I got there, I also showed my stylist the video of how I wanted my hair to look. I attached pictures of the inspo pictures I showed them and then what I got. To be honest I'm kind of upset with what I got because I payed $175 plus tip and it's nowhere near what I asked for. Everyone was super kind and welcoming and prices seemed fair so if you're just getting a cut I'd recommend this place but I wasn't very happy with what I got. read more

I was very impressed with Puccini! I had been growing out my hair for a considerable amount of time, but wanted to return to short hair with style. After doing extensive research, I decided on Puccini, and I was not disappointed. I contacted them about setting up an appointment and they were able to take me that same day. Once I arrived I was greeted by some of the nicest people I've ever met at a haircutting place. Cali was my cutter and she did a fantastic job. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she was able to match it with tremendous ease. Horribly disappointed at our first visit to this salon. My boyfriend went in for a cut and showed the stylist (woman with long hair, tattoos on hands and arms), a photo and she cut his hair WAY short - not asking his opinion before going very short. She then made a comment about his "cow-lick" explaining that that's why his hair was sticking up following her cut like she was making an excuse for the appearance of his hair. She didn't fade his neckline or even ask how he wanted it to look, and she gave him an incredibly boxy looking cut. The stylist seemed nervous and uncomfortable, and when she finished she didn't show him his hair with a mirror and could most likely tell he was upset by his cut. He should have spoken up more, and the cut was only $25, but we were still incredibly disappointment and won't be visiting this salon again. read more

Tammy did a fabulous job on my 13 year old daughter's hair. It went from medium brown to the most vibrant green and pink. My daughter is thrilled with her first dye job and I credit Tammy with being incredibly patient, thorough, and knowledgeable. I was worried that her hair would be fried but it feels and looks great. i came in just wanting to get around an inch and a half trimmed of my hair (mostly the ends since they were pretty dead) but then ended up getting around 3 inches cut off without any warning. The stylist (lindsay i think) said she'd only cut a little off. she started cutting my hair dry and then washed it and just kept on cutting. i wasn't able to see how much she was cutting after she had washed it and she said she was going to cut less before starting, but after she was done my hair was so much shorter than i wanted and i completely hated it. i'm not one to cause a scene, especially when there's no point (in this case there was no point since the hair had already been cut), so i just said thank you and left. i had to stop myself from crying and walk out with a smile even though i absolutely hated the haircut. i have naturally curly hair, so when i get it cut i know that it'll be even shorter when it's curly. i told her this before she started in order to stress how important it was to me to not have it too short (since i know it'd get even shorter when i wear it natural). i even showed her a picture to demonstrate how short it gets. i wasn't able to see how much she was cutting in the back, so when she moved all my hair to the front after she was done cutting, i was shocked. i've never had my hair cut this short and have never wanted to because i straighten it somewhat frequently so it doesn't grow as fast. i was completely devastated leaving the salon, but again i refrained from causing a scene. i still am very upset about the haircut and hate looking at myself now because of it. i just wish she had cut only an inch and a half off like i had asked her to but she cut off so much more and now it's way too short. i won't ever be returning to puccinis because of this. i really wanted to like this place as one of my friend's went here and told me to go, but i can't say i was satisfied at all with the haircut. i wish i had never gone and just trimmed my hair myself. atleast now i know. this is my first time ever writing a review for anywhere because i'm not one to complain online, but i've also never been this unhappy with a service in my entire life so i feel as though i need to write one. read more

Actually the worst (men's) haircut I have ever received to date, and I've received some bad haircuts in Oakland. Stylist took 7 minutes to do the entire cut and didn't ask if I wanted her to touch anything up. She didn't taper the sides, which is what I asked, cut the top way too short, and butchered my part. She left hair that was too long below the part and also chopped hair short above the part. Not sure if she was just a bad stylist or didn't care about the quality of haircut she was giving, but I guess that's the same thing. I won't be coming back. read more

If there was an option for no stars I would. I go to a salon to get peace but with the back to back to back booking by the only two good stylists there you get no time to relax. With sal's constant pacing and nonstop talking you get no peace. I love my stylist but this salon sucks. The sinks are old, the bathroom is run down. Puccini's is one of the worst businesses to support in Oakland. Puccini's "proudly" displays an LGBT flag sticker on it's door yet has gender pricing. If, under any circumstances, your stylist makes an error, do not expect the owner to work with you to remedy the situation. The owner only cares about the sale, not your returning service. What causes in the price difference in some cuts when they are similar? Be specific. Quit ripping off the LGBT community & college students. This place deserves zero stars... Yelp needs to make that an option. Little did Salvatore know I was on the phone for the duration of my friend's hair appointment to fix the choppy and uneven haircut she first received. The second stylist tried her best to correct the original cut, but at the end of the day it's not what the CUSTOMER wanted or asked for, all other opinions including the stylists' is irrelevant. Salvatore will try and disregard this by stating how much time it took to FIX the mistake, but won't acknowledge the mistake itself, simply pathetic. In all honesty, I have never heard such horrible customer service prior to that day. I wasn't going to leave a review, but after seeing how he has responded to others who have left negative reviews, it feels necessary. Notice the tone in each of his replies? The arrogant and condescending nature in which he deals with customers? You'll be met with that same attitude in person, truly disgusting. He'll also try and use any legal verbiage he can to intimidate you into rescinding your request for a refund and prevent you from writing a negative review (make sure you understand and use the terms correctly next time you do this to someone, ok?). But don't worry, just remind him what the First Amendment is! I know it's easy to forget when you're busy berating people. I'm well aware times are especially tough during this pandemic, but this is no way to treat ANYONE. Take this to the University of Pittsburgh, the police, or whoever you want! When I was finally fed up with my hair, I spontaneously decided to get cut at Puccini's, the only hair salon on campus. They took me right away when I called in for an appointment and had the best haircut I've ever received by Sarah. She was quiet but quite friendly and did exactly what I asked for. I have very long and thick hair and she was able to layer it to compliment my face, something I was never sure what looked best. I wish I found this place sooner but definitely a go to! He chopped off probably 6-7 inches, so I left stunned and hesitant to like it, but cautiously optimistic. It was a good haircut, even though it was a drastic change for me. I recently moved to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh and as I search for a new salon here, I realize I should review Puccini's, my go-to for the last five years. I have very, very thick medium-length hair that is naturally brown but has been many lovely shades of black, brown, blonde, and red thanks to Josh. He is incredible at giving me the color I want, even though my hair fights at every turn, and he's so patient even though it takes double the time of most clients because of my thick hair. I've had cuts from a handful of the stylists and I've always been pleased. And you really can't beat the price - I believe my color, trim, and styling was usually about 120-140 before tip. I wish more of the reviews I'm looking at would speak to color and women's hair cuts, so hopefully this helps someone! Josh is the BEST! read more

Oh my goodness! I'm obsessed with this place. I waited forever to book an appointment before graduation and they were still able to squeeze me in the week before. I came with a picture of a copper-to-blonde balayage/ombré mix that my stylist completely perfected (yelp won't let me post pictures) but I'm in love! It was exactly what I wanted and that's the only time I've ever felt that way about my hair!!! Also, I paid 1/3 less of what I've paid elsewhere and when I felt like the ends were a little too blonde, she added toner despite having me in her chair for 4 hours just to make sure it felt right to me. I moved from Pittsburgh to California a little over a year ago, and it's been a bit of a process trying to find a new hair salon out here. To get a great cut, you have to a- pay way more than I'm accustomed to and b- deal with a lot of pretense, and I'm just not down with that, man. It's made me appreciate Puccini that much more! I had a haircut there a week ago and it was absolutely horrible. The stylist Amanda left lots of little corners and rogue hair sticking out everywhere. The owner Sal is awkward and doesn't know how to interact with people. Awkward to a point of being uncomfortable. As well as his scampering around the salon is unsettling. Puccini used to be a great place, but after my favorite stylist left two months ago, I've just been getting bad haircuts one after another. 10/10 would NOT recommend. read more

I've been going to Puccini's for now 7-8 years. Even though I've moved across the country, I make it a point to schedule haircuts around my travel and come back to Pittsburgh for my haircuts. I've had Sarah cut my hair for years now and have never been disappointed. Yes, prices have gone up, but it's well worth it having a place you trust to do your hair right. At first I was wary when I heard that the price for a woman's haircut at Puccini's was so low. Under $30? What's the catch? If there is one, I haven't found it yet. The appearance of the salon seems fine to me--I think it's going more for edgy than high-end, but the place and the equipment appear perfectly clean to me. The stylists I've had here were friendly. In other salons, some stylists have come across as condescending when they realize that I'm a student and won't be a frequent customer getting all the bells and whistles--but not at Puccini's. When other stylists have told me I need to come in more frequently to maintain my hairstyle, I don't get that lecture here. One of my stylists here even suggested how she could cut my layers so they didn't grow back so quickly. All the stylists here seem to be young with hip, edgy haircuts--but I've always been happy with the less funky cuts I ask for and receive. read more

Don't let a few bad reviews sway the reality of how awesome of a salon this is. It's affordable and convenient (especially for PITT students). I tried to do a diy ombre and of course it turned out looking terrible. I was afraid the only options I had to fix my hair were to either cut it off or re-dye my hair back. Puccinis is great! It's a very laid back salon, perfect for students especially. This was my first time here, I walked in and Ashley took me immediately. We talked a little about what I wanted and I showed her a few pictures. She washed my hair and then started cutting. My hair looks, feels, and smells fabulous!
