I attended for ~7yrs and suffer nightmares years later. It's a cutthroat environment. There are some good instructors (ex. Ms. Hiromi), but also some very unkind ones. The culture between dancers is not very good either, I suspect because of the students mirroring what is said to them by certain instructors. Bullying runs rampant and was, in some circumstances, pretty extreme. Outside of comments about technique and jealousy over roles, there were also a lot of damaging things said regarding weight, both by students and, rarely (but still enough to leave scars), instructors.

It is one of the premier dance academies in the area with amazing dance teachers! My daughter started in the little girls class, progressed to intermediate, went on pointe when she was 11, and has been enrolled in the pre-professional program. Not only has she learned a beautiful art form, but the classes also keep her in great physical shape, giving her a drive and a goal to strive towards. She's also made some amazing friendships along the way. Even in the young 4/5/6 year old classes, she was learning ballet but in a fun way. IBA encourages even the youngest dancers to have good technique and a good foundation, but also making dance fun and enjoyable. IBA even has a children's production every year to ensure even the youngest dancers have a chance to get on stage and experience that magic under the stage lights. Yes, IBA does have expectations for ALL their girls including the younger ones - simple expectations of having a neat bun, appropriate attire and a good attitude. Expectations that are something the girls will need to be prepared for later on as they get older whether in dance (at any academy!) or simply in life. Some expectations also include volunteering in the shows if your child is in it, even the older girls, us parents are required to put in our time. The expectations for both the children and adults are laid out explicitly ahead of time and its not the fault of IBA should someone not adhere to those. I highly recommend IBA - smaller class size so more individualized attention and teaching, solid foundation for classical Vaganova style dance with emphasis on encouraging a well-rounded dance background so they offer classes in other dance disciplines like jazz, contemporary, character, flamenco, modern.

We ran to the dentist immediately hoping that they could fix the baby tooth back in place but unfortunately we have no choice but wait until the adult tooth comes in and that takes another 5-7 years. We parents send our kids to daycare entrusting the caretakers on safety and when they get hurt especially in cases of permanent damages its disheartening for parents to go thru such an incident and our loss is simply cannot be matched with whatever losses that the caretaker must or will incur. We visited her daycare post incident to retrospect on the situation. She showed complete lack of confidence to continue care for our son, recommended to pull our son out and would return our deposit. After few days she comes back saying its purely an accident and showed us a completely new attitude, which heavily shocked us as we have never seen that side of her. She was constantly talking about money, business and her losses. She doesn't realize that the losses that she must or will incur is merely nothing compared to what we have and are going thru in terms of pain and suffering. After a detailed analysis on the pre/post incident situations and her behavior, we simply think its purely due to her negligence and a bad judgment call that this permanent damage had happened. 1. The train table was not age appropriate 2. It lacked safety and had hard edges including objects with sharp edges on the table 3. She crowded the small area (basement) by placing it as an obstacle knowing clearly that he is a WADDLE+ER 4. The train table wasn't there when we first saw the facility as we would have completely advised against having it there (for example we mentioned about smoke alarm and absence of gate which took care eventually) 5. She clearly violated her own policy from her hand book - Page 26 Section 'Injury Prevention' - "I will check daily to make certain that both the indoor and outdoor play areas are safe for children and families - free from broken glass, toys and equipment are safe and the area is free from hazards...." In the end, we ended up walking out with a loss and were unfairly treated.

My 1st grader has been here for a few break camps and has loved it and asked to go back again. The staff is very nice and the kids seem to learn a lot yet have fun at the same time. I only wish the space was a little bigger and that for the camps esp the longer ones in the summer that they would take the kids out for some outdoor time (i.e. for lunch or a quick break) since they are inside for the whole time in a classroom-like setting. The kids were a little slow to warm up for the first class but after 20 minutes, there was no looking back. They loved all the classes and had so much fun. The performance was very enjoyable too. My older son has been in a couple of other mini-plays with other groups and, as an audience member, the SLP performance was the easiest to follow. Which is saying something since I had read the scripts and knew the stories of the other shows but SLP put on an original play I had never seen before. My boys don't need summer camps just yet but SLP is definitely on my list of camps to sign up for when we do need them.
