The facility still looks new, and it is clean, modern, and well managed and run. Everyone on the staff is extremely helpful. This is particularly important for me, living outside the United States. There is a basic monthly charge that covers rent, meals (3 per day, and healthy), and utilities (excluding phone). The charge varies only due to the size of the apartment chosen; studio, or one and two bedroom options. Then there is a variable charge based on the needs of the resident for the care and assistance they require. That level of care is established after an evaluation by The Gardens staff and then in agreement with the resident's family/representative. This is certainly a fair way to allocate charges since some residents...perhaps the older ones...will require more help and attention than those that are younger. And further along, if and when there is the need, they have a memory care unit in the same building, although separated from the residents not yet needing that level of care. Again, I am extremely pleased with the decision to have my mother living at The Gardens. Not being able to visit her frequently, it gives me great peace of mind to know where she is living and that the staff is taking excellent care of her.

Despite my informing him of my mental health diagnoses--schizophrenia and bipolar disorder--he proceeded with the banding of two internal hemorrhoids, ignored my pain, and demanded a second procedure despite my refusal. Not happy. I had a telehealth visit with my PA Edgar Garcia on Friday regarding blood work. He was…read moresending my prescription into my regular pharmacy however I told him they were closed over the weekend. He informed me I needed the medicine before then and what other pharmacy I would like. I told him Walmart Pharmacy in Edinburg off of 281. i hadn't heard anything else from Mr. Garcia or the pharmacy. On Saturday I called the pharmacy to see if the prescription was ready. The pharmacist proceeded to tell me that he tried calling the doctors office because the prescroption is not covered by my insurance. The out of pocket cost was going to be over 500 dollars. He said if we could call the office as well to help out. Well it's a Saturday and they aren't open so I had to call the answering service. In this case they only send the messages through to the on call doctors if it's a life or death situation or what they consider a medical emergency. Well my case is a medical emergency since my potassium is at a 6 and it needed to be lowered. The answering service sent my message through to the on call doctor, which was supposed to be that I needed a cheaper medication that the insurance would cover. Later on I received a message from the on call doctor which i am assuming was PA Adam Ortega wanting me to review the medication. The medication was the same one that had been sent and it was sent to the pharmacy that was closed for the weekend. In other words he didn't even open or read my chart. I then called back to the answering service and left them another message that I needed a cheaper medicine than what is listed and it was to be sent to the Walmart Pharmacy in Edinburg off of 281. The answering service guy said he would send it through and said if the doctor feels this is an emergency he will contact you back. Well I never received a call back or a message back from PA Adam Ortega. It's now Sunday morning and I am without the medication I was needing to lower my potassium since Friday and before Monday. I am going to have to go to Walmart and purchase this medication that is over 500 dollars out of pocket because someone isn't doing their job by reading the chart correctly or by picking up the phone and calling the patient directly. I've always been happy with VMAC and PA Edgar Garcia however, not this time with PA Adam Ortega.

I've been waiting for my scheduled appt for 2 weeks now. I get a call today from Evelyn who states she has to cancel my appt bc they don't take my insurance. I checked my insurance and Dr. Slavin is in network so I call Evelyn back. She realizes my PCP sent her the wrong info so she sets me up again for tomorrow. A few minutes later she calls and I can tell she doesn't know how to tell me that she has to cx my appt because "we cannot see you according to my manager", and she is very apologetic. She then says that her manager will be calling me, so I ask the name of the person who will be calling me, and she says "Mrs. Slavin". I tell her "I'm sorry you will be hearing me but I know what's going on. She won't let Dr. Slavin see me bc I'm an ex-employee. Mari (Mrs. Slavin) is petty, unethical, and unprofessional. You can tell her I said that. And again, I'm sorry you got caught up in this". I worked for Dr. Slavin for 6 years. I never stole from him nor did I do anything illegal. I took care of his patients and went above and beyond to take care of his patients. And now his petty, unethical, unprofessional wife refuses me services. I need his services as a patient, I'm not there looking for work. What happened to the Hippocratic oath Dr. Slavin took? What happened to "I will treat the sick to the best of my ability", or "I will remember that I do not treat a fever, chart, or cancerous growth (or an ex-employee), I treat a human being", and last but not least, what about "may I long experience the joy of healing those who SEEK MY HELP". I need his help but apparenlty, Dr. Slavin's wife, Mari, threw his Hippocratic oath out the window.
