Great food! I got the ribs and they were dry rub, but I had the option to have them with bbq sauce (which I would do next time). The Mac n cheese was delicious, as was the smoked cauliflower! Burnt ends were also amazing!!! The brisket was a little dry for my liking, but it was still good with the barbecue sauce added. Also the sweet tea was fantastic, not too sweet, just right! PHBBQ catered our wedding party and we couldn't have been happier with our choice. Our guests raved about the food for weeks. The catering prices were super reasonable for such high quality grub. We had the pulled pork, smoked chicken, slaw, mac n cheese, baked beans and banana pudding. The bread was great (local from Luna Bakery) and I am still dreaming about those pickles... The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. They even helped us out by adding a vegetarian option at the last minute (also delicious - enjoyed even by the meat-eaters!). Pulaski Heights surprised me in the best way possible. It's located in a very quiet part of town, and you might not even notice it from the road if you don't know what you're looking for. The innocuous exterior is hardly representative of what awaits you inside, however. We ordered the half rack of ribs, burnt ends, and sides galore--mac n' cheese, collard greens, baked beans, and potato salad. The meat was delicious and frankly didn't even need sauce; the flavor spoke for itself. The mac n' cheese was remarkably good (in my opinion, this is the true hallmark of a good BBQ joint). The collard greens and beans were perfect complements; both flavorful and well-made. The potato salad was underwhelming in all honesty, but we were so pleased with the rest of the meal that it hardly mattered. Service was prompt and very friendly, and our glasses of water and sweet tea never ran dry. If you're looking for good BBQ in the Athens area, Pulaski Heights is a guaranteed winner! read more

I've been here twice. I've tried the chicken, the ribs, the vinegar-based slaw, and the greens. The chicken has been slightly on the dry side each time, but still flavorful. The ribs are probably among the better quality you can get within a five-mile radius of Athens. The smoky, flavorful, and the meat comes off with just a bit of a tug. It's a subtler flavor of meat that some might like, but it's good. My wife and I also enjoyed the greens and the bananas pudding for dessert. When I can't make the drive out to Chub's (which seriously has the best brisket I have ever eaten and I probably think about that stuff twice a week) and need some `cue, I'll keep Pulaski Heights on my short list of options. read more

Just had the smoked chicken wings, only they weren't. They were cold, undercooked, fatty, tasteless, and tough. Swimming in some messy tasteless "sauce" to add to the insult. To top it off, an unheard of $13/for 6! Who ever heard of including the wing tip with their smoked wings - who eats that part? Had to ask for a bag and utensils. Big disappointment. I'm a vegetarian who loves BBQ and rich, cheesy foods and this is the place I go to to satisfy these cravings. I always order the tofu sandwich with two sides; my favorites are the squash casserole--cheesy and flavored just right with onions--and the mac and cheese. I love my mac and cheese with a thick flour roux and quite dense and Pulaski Heights' is my favorite in town. I've tasted sides that my friends have ordered--the smoked cauliflower, baked beans, and greens--which are all quite good--but I'll stick with my regular stand-by's. It's worth mentioning their delicious homemade pickles that top off the meal just perfectly. The restaurant is BYOB so you have the freedom to bring your own beverage of choice or order one of their tasty choices: iced tea, orange Nehi, koolaid, grape Faygo, bottled root beer, and more. Yeah, it stinks when they're out of something you had your heart set on but that's the way of some smaller businesses. It's worth the heartache for what they offer the majority of the time. One other thing worth mentioning--their homemade BBQ sauces are delicious. I'm especially partial to the sweet tomato sauce. (The other is more vinegar-based.) read more

I had baked beans and coleslaw on the side, the beans were yummy but the coleslaw was bland. Too much cabbage water flavor, not enough salt. I normally pick up BBQ from Dawg Gone Good BBQ, but I was feeling lazy tonight and decided to have this place delivered to me. I will never make that mistake again and recommend that anyone hunting BBQ in the Athens area head over to Dawg Gone as this place was a total disappointment. The pulled pork was extremely dry and poorly chopped which made eating it on a sandwich a bit of a challenge while the family for 4 meal we ordered came with just 4 buns and a very small cup of sauce for 1.5 pounds of meat. We ordered baked beans, mac 'n' cheese and cole slaw as our sides but received squash casserole instead of mac 'n' cheese which ended up being a good thing given that it was the only one of the three that was edible. The beans had a canned flavor that would have been ok from Hormel but is completely unacceptable given that I paid $7 for a pint of them. The vinegar cole slaw, something I was looking forward to as someone who doesn't like mayo based cole slaw, was extremely overly sour to the point that it was inedible. I have no idea how this place as so many positive reviews as I've eaten at nearly 100 BBQ joints in my life all over the country and this is one of the worst I've ever had. read more

The actual BBQ itself isn't my favorite, but it was quite good, and BBQ is such a personal taste that no one place can ever claim to really have "the best" according to everyone. Everything else on the menu that my wife and I tried was incredible, though. On the day we went there, my wife and I tried a few snacks first: the homemade pickles, smoked pecans, and deviled eggs. The pickles and pecans were both amazing (I love fresh pickles like those, especially when they aren't too sour or too sweet... just the right mix of flavors). We also tried the Brunswick Stew, which I thought was very good, though it was little too heavy on the black pepper for my wife's taste. (My wife isn't a big fan of very spicy or peppery foods, though... and I am!) I had the redneck reuben with sides of squash casserole and smoked cauliflower, and the pork belly on the sandwich was so perfect that I actually picked half of it off the sandwich and ate it by itself. The rest of the sandwich was pretty good, too. :-) The squash casserole had a delightful, unique flavor that I enjoyed very much (probably the sage and oregano, as listed on the menu), and I would have it again every time I go there. The texture of the smoked cauliflower was perfect, but the flavor itself was too strongly smoky for me to eat more than 2 or 3 pieces. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich with sides of mac & cheese side and the special of that day, which was stewed crowder peas. The crowder peas were extremely well done, and while my wife reallly liked the mac and cheese, I found it to be a little bland for my taste. (To be fair, though, I'm not generally a "mac and cheese person" unless it has a stronger flavor than most M&C does.) Overall, we had ordered a huge lunch, and we couldn't eat even half of it, and the staff happily bagged up all the leftovers for us in their own separate containers, which we took home to eat for dinner! This is a very good restaurant, and while the price range might seem a little steep to people used to Athens price ranges, it's very reasonable for a restaurant of its quality compared to places like metro Atlanta. It is a shame when one employee can make you leave the restaurant but that is exactly what happened. Me and my friend arrived at the hostess stand and we asked if we could sit at the bar the bar The bar had no one but two other people sitting there that were just sat before us They did not have to wait and went straight to the bar with another hostess seating them Our hostess told us we would have to wait 15 minutes to sit at the bar where there were about 10 empty chairs. The waiting list was about 15 minutes but no one wanted to sit at the bar everyone was waiting on a table When I questioned her why we could not sit at the bar when everyone else did without reservation, we got no response She muttered something and simply walked away and never came back We saw her go outside and that is when we decided to leave We could have just gone up to the bar and sat down and ordered but based on her attitude and unfriendliness, we left Most likely I will not return to this establishment. Positives: The food is great and you get a large portion size. I have had the pulled pork sandwich both times I went and really enjoyed it. It is also a great place for a date, especially if you sit on the top floor next to the window. It is not like a typical BBQ place with paper plates and cups, instead the food is nicely presented. Hipster barbecue. Great if you like your barbecue with a side of pretentiousness. Don't get me wrong, the meat's decent, and some of the sides are good. The last time I went, however, my squash casserole was cooked on top and not just "under-cooked" but completely raw and runny on the inside. It was nasty and inedible. The waiter was pretty aloof and inattentive, not noticing the sorry state of the squash or checking in regularly for refills and such. I also didn't enjoy the ten minutes of freight train right in the middle of dinner. Not terrible, but all in all a pretty "meh" experience. read more

I had really looked forward to trying this place after hearing some good comments, and I really wanted to like it once I arrived. The atmosphere is very cool, the service is friendly, and when you read the menu, everything sounds good. Unfortunately, then you get the food, and it all seems vacuous. My barbecue chicken had absolutely no smoke flavor, or flavor at all. I'm not convinced they even have a smoker, and if they do, they don't know how to use it. I opted for the vinegar sauce, which I normally enjoy, but there was no distinguishing it from straight cider vinegar. If I had been blindfolded I would have had no idea that what I was eating was intended to be BBQ. The beans were one dimensional..the way too sweet dimension, and undercooked. Potato salad was blah. The best part of the meal was the Luna roll. All in all, the place seemed all style and no substance. read more

Honestly some of the best pulled pork I have tried in the area....they definitely know how to smoke some pork. BUT....just having tried it for the third time...we went in for the $5 special at 10 (a sammie and a beer)....never have I felt like such an interloper in a bar/restaurant that was about to close. We were treated like second class citizens as soon as we walked in and our waiter's demeanor was shit**y to say the least. I have eaten there twice, and I have worked in the restaurant industry many times so I know it's generally not cool to go into a place too late. However, if you offer a special at 10....don't act like the people who come in are a nuisance or don't tell them that you "just ran out of food" when they can clearly see the staff getting plates of bbq at the bar after you pass along the news. We got a to go order and I decided to try a number of the sides with the pulled pork. Again the pork was excellent and the tomato sauce was a good compliment. The sides were a HUGE disappointment. The smoked potato salad was BY FAR the worst...and I can't even believe I am saying this....WORST potato anything I have ever been served ANYWHERE....PERIOD. My last experience there...and I mean the last time I will ever go there as a patron because of the bad experience, I asked the waiter who prepared the bbq and he pointed out a silver haired guy near the bar and said that this place was his "baby"....I was shocked because as soon as we walked in at 9:45 he gave us the same shit**y look as the rest of the staff. If you offer a late night special and advertise all over the damn town, in a COLLEGE TOWN where people stay up late (the waiter even made the excuse that they weren't used to late business being that they were "off the beaten path") then at least encourage business if you expect to stay open. I'm really sad to see a great town like Athens go without great restaurants because some dumbass, hipster owner won't get over himself to offer the basics that you need to stay open....even if you did work/own part of 5+10....1) GOOD FOOD at a decent price 2) GOOD STAFF that care enough to keep your "baby" open 3)BASIC F**ING CLEANLINESS For GOD's sake people ATHENS can do better....TRY AT LEAST.... read more

We loved everything we ordered! We are vegetarian, which was not a problem here- it's both meat-eater and veg-friendly. We each ordered the smoked tofu tacos with two sides- cauliflower, collards, black eyed peas, and baked beans. Everything was amazing! All of the dishes were really flavorful and, although we ate entirely too much, it felt pretty healthy. Considering how much food we got, and how good the quality was, the price is very fair. This was our first visit here and we were very pleased with this pet-friendly restaurant. The aroma when you walk in just makes you hungry! Great staff, asked if we needed water for our fur-babies, gave us great service. The smoke ring on the meat ...mmmmm yum. The pulled pork was delicious, as were the sides. The b&b pickles had a nice crunch to them, reminded me of my grandmothers pickles. Will stop in again when we are in town. You won't be disappointed! read more
