I will not lament the loss of Weaver D's. Everytime I've been the food was fine. I think people liked it for the connection to R.E.M. I was in town on business and was highly recommend this place for some soul food. The parking lot is small but street parking is always readily available. This is definitely a hole in the wall spot. Dining area is super small so you definitely need to catch them on a non busy time. I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken and my 2 sides were green beans and Mac and cheese. I got to say, the fried chicken was the best I have ever had in my life. The skin was crispy. The flavoring and seasoning was perfect on the inside. The the temperature of the chicken was sooo hot that it was amazing. The green beans and Mac and cheese was awesome as well. I had sweet tea and lemonade mixed and was just amazing! I was taking a walk along the greenway for the first time and just looking for a place to buy a drink. Never heard of Weaver D's before, but I was expecting it to be some hole-in-the-wall classy restaurant with the sign out front that says "delicious fine foods". Then on closer inspection, found out it was it was "soul food". I wasn't hungry, but with all the great reviews here, thought I'd give it a try. It was really crowded when I arrived at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon. There are two lines inside, the one on the right to order the food and the one on the left to pick it up. There is no indoor dining, but there are a lot of tables outside, esp next to the river. I ordered the steak and gravy with collard greens and broccoli casserole. Food was OK, but they sure did not hold back on the serving portions. Drinks are in a giant cup as well. Love the down-home atmosphere inside. Others would open the door as people left with an armful of food. I also chatted with a nice old black lady around 90 years old. When you pick up the food, they have no idea what you ordered, so you have to tell them what you ordered. Next time walking the greenway, stop by for a huge lunch and have a relaxing time eating next to the river. read more

Always looking for great fried chicken. Well this one didn't disappoint. It's a mom and pop shop that seems to be strictly local. Only the owner and his wife were working. Very friendly but not the fastest but moved as fast as they could. You order at the register and then stand in line to get your food. Bring cash or there is a service charge. I got the 2 piece mixed chicken lunch with 2 sides and a drink (lemonade or sweet tea). The sides I chose were buttered potatoes and Mac & cheese. Everything was homemade you could tell. Reminded me of my grandma cooking at her house. Not much room for seating inside and it was very cluttered and messy with everything sitting around. Quite a shock walking if especially if you are expecting a nice sit down place to eat. Definitely get it to go. Aside from the interior the food was excellent. This place is iconic. The owner Dexter has been operating his restaurant out of this bright green house for decades. The menu is simple and the place is down to earth. Come get your fill of southern home cooking. I stopped by on Monday at lunchtime. The parking lot was empty. Unfortunately they weren't open. Apparently the hours are not always consistent, but there was a sign on the door indicating they would be open the next day. I was able to return Tuesday to give them a try. The steak & gravy was tender and moist. I could easily cut each bite with just a fork. It was served on a bed of rice drowning in the same thin white gravy. It was so tasty that I mixed my squash casserole with it because the squash on its own was bland in comparison. It was the one thing I wouldn't get again mainly because of the stringy texture. The broccoli casserole on the other hand was just fine on its own. The cornbread was not sweet or spicy which would have been my preference; however, I think most people would have liked it just the way it was. While you wait for him or one of the ladies to cook and serve your meal, you can walk around and admire the many R.E.M. paraphernalia on the walls. Did you know the band saw the words "Automatic for the People" on the sign outside, and ended up using the line on the cover art of one of their albums? If you want to learn more, you can buy a CD of Owner Dexter telling the backstory. Weaver D's does a lot of good for the community. He is featured in a 2020 Census poster encouraging people to get counted. He also has a fundraiser going. I overheard the owner talking about serving a turkey dinner tomorrow, so I might return in my stretchy pants to get my Thanksgiving fix. Oh, and this time, I'll probably break down and try one of the amazing desserts he has like the bread pudding. I recommend you give this home grown cook a chance to fill your belly too. read more

An Athens icon. 35 yrs in service. Me ya changes and is called out to you when you walk in front door. "Today I have fried pork chops, bbq chicken, catfish , steak and gravy." The sides are posted on the board and you tell Dorothy what sides you want as she fixes your plate. It's not the best fried pork chop I've had but the chicken is good. Not what I was expecting. I certainly don't want to wear out Automatic for the People (or show my age) but being in the place and eating great southern inspired and prepared added to the yumminess. I came in late in the afternoon way past the lunch rush and ordered what Mr. Weaver exclaimed "the last wings in the building". I am so glad I did! The dining area is set up with a long communal table and some smaller tables. The end of the long table-closest to the counter- had several freshly made red velvet cakes on it. The conversation and community of the restaurant was just as rich as those cakes. I ordered my meal- the chicken- and people came and went from the place. Comments on church, the fish, and the weather peppered the air. Most the discussions started like this "WEAVER!..." Again, I was fascinated by even the tiniest of details of the restaurant. The chicken was just about out of the fryer when Mr. Weaver called my back up to the counter. At that point, a sweet woman asked me what sides I wanted and handed me my box. I think this so smart because there wasn't any gum up in writing this down or filling out the details of the order at the cash register. I hate leaving bad reviews but I didn't have a great experience with this place today. The food was really good but the service wasn't. I'd much rather to go Food for the Soul on Broad that always has a ton of choices, super nice folks who run the place, and they get you in and out quick. Just a much friendlier, easier experience overall for good southern comfort food. It took about half an hour to get my food after ordering, as my toddler was melting down hungry. Their delay also upset our nap time. I would expect a restauraunt to be ready to serve food when they open as like...a basic part of operating a business. I stopped in to grab takeout for the family about ten minutes after they opened and they weren't even ready to serve the meal at this time. Which wasn't really communicated clearly to anyone in the line. If I had known it would take so long to receive the food, I would have left. Many of the sides weren't ready so the things I wanted to get I couldn't order. I was told quite brusquely to order fast and really didn't feel like there was a welcoming atmosphere. Almost like me being there to buy their food was an imposition on them? I wasn't informed I couldn't order from all of their listed sides until after I paid and was already stuck as well. The dressing was excellent, the Mac n Cheese was also good. Greenbeans were too salty and so was the cornbread. Chicken was good as well. Decent food just not worth the hassle. Stopped for lunch on a Saturday to get our veggie fix satisfied. My wife and I both got the four veggie platter with sweet tea. I got dressing with gravy and cranberry sauce, collard greens, broccoli casserole, and green beans. Enjoyed the dressing and green beans. The collards were so-so, and the broccoli didn't have much flavor. My wife had the broccoli casserole, squash casserole, green beans, and mac and cheese. She enjoyed the squash and green beans and thought the other two were ok. Our niece got the fried chicken which was good along with another persons fried catfish. My wife and I were taking a walk from the Holiday Inn down Broad Street toward the river when we passed by a bright green restaurant with "Automatic for the People" on the sign. As children of the 1980s in Athens, GA we both automatically thought "R.E.M."! So, knowing only that we stopped in for lunch. And so glad we did. Weaver D himself takes the orders and cooks the chicken. Well, he half takes your order and half tells you what to get to keep the line moving. Which was fine by me. I got the fried chicken, collards, and mac-n-cheese. My wife got a four vegetable plate. Everything was delicious. The fried chicken some of the best I've had. The whole area around this restaurant is gentrifying, which I would hope means the place is going to be making money hand over fist for years to come. But they are also trying to raise $50,000 to keep the place going, so hopefully the community steps up to support this unique institution. read more

Automatic indeed. For the people, absolutely. Walking into the bright green building you immediately feel comfortable in Mr. Weaver's homey and welcoming restaurant. It's takes just a moment to realize the menu is posted and you can walk right up and order. They have a variety of protein items, pork chops, fish, steak, but you know you are here for the chicken. I opted for the white meat and was served a breast and thigh which was perfect and a generous portion. Crunchy, with a good garlic, seasoned coating, it's just perfectly done fried chicken. With the meal you get two sides and can choose from and they will ask you at the window when you roll up to grab your plate. You can make pick from broccoli and squash casserole, rice, collards, mac and chee, buttered beans (Lima), string beans, potato salad or peas. Challenging decisions, but I opted for the collards and mac. The collards were perfect, torn into bite size pieces, not over done and flavorful, full of onion and porky goodness. The mac and cheese was also excellent. We could have a whole aside on varieties and expectations for mac and cheese, but this was just my style and most bodacious on flavor. You also get a corn bread roll. A golden brown and delicious roll that is not too sweet - the normal state of cornbread. Pair it with the squeeze parkay and you have a perfect combination. Drinks are from a five gallon pale of lemonade or tea (sweet) of course. The whole thing is delightful and cheap for the price. Recommend you try this place! Automatic for the people! read more

I'm a recovering food slut, and every now and then I have a relapse! THE SCENE I drove out to Athens to have lunch with my oldest son. We were enjoying some delicious Shrimp & Grits at Chops & Hops when he reminded me of Weaver D's. You see, he went to school here @ UGA and several times we made plans to go to Weaver D's for lunch, but something always got in the way. Mostly it was because they didn't seem to keep to the scheduled hours they posted . Often they would be closed during hours they were supposed to be open and for a while they appeared to be closed for business permanently. Already bulging with a full belly, I walked into Weaver D's with the intention of getting something to take home for dinner. I decided on three chicken wings with a side of macaroni & cheese and dressing with gravy. The gentlemen owner was very nice and had a melodious tone to his voice. I didn't ask if he was a singer, but I am certain he has vocal skills just from his tone. He was very proper and polite and didn't hesitate when I asked if I could take a picture with him. It's just my thing, I like taking pics with owners of places like this, particularly when I don't think I will ever have opportunity to come back. Who knows, he may be featured on 'Diners, Drive-in's & Dives' someday. The exterior is an eye catching lime green sure to cause an accident if you focus on it too hard while driving! THE FOOD The interior is simple and almost feels like a backroom break area. All kinds of memorabilia and pics dress the walls along with several happy college students getting their grub on. Prior to leaving, I sampled a taste of each of my food items while they was still hot and fresh and would rate them as follows: * FRIED CHICKEN WINGS - 3 stars Not bad, but I could taste the grease (which probably means they need to change or better filter their cooking oil). * MACARONI & CHEESE - 1 star Not very cheese, more like noodles with a light cheese sauce. * DRESSING w/gravy - 4 stars This was really very good. I wouldn't mind ordering a pan of this next Thanksgiving. I LOVE the fact they put celery in their dressing and also that it was moist and not dry. Very well seasoned. * SWEET TEA - 3 stars The tea tasted a little watery and wasn't very sweet. Big props that they use crushed ice here. FINAL THOUGHTS It's the kind of place you want to do well. Nice folks just trying to make their dreams come true. However, I wish the food was better tasting, especially taking into consideration the price. My meal with an extra side of macaroni & cheese for my son (whom also didn't like it) totaled just over $13. Geeez Louise! Five stars on G.P. Dexter Weaver, the legend himself, greeted me at 20 till closing with a friendly "all I have left is catfish, crowder peas and greens. Is that ok for you?" When I said "sure!" He replied with "Automatic". For those of us that r.e.m.ember buying most of R.E.M.'s albums as they were first released, this is somewhat of a hajj, akin to visiting the St. Mary's episcopal church steeple (btw, reconstruction started on that earlier this year on the 35th anniversary of r.e.m.'s first concert there). But I don't want this to be the nerdy band fan's review. Dexter Weaver has an exceptional thing going in Weaver D's and the congenial service along with clearly fresh and delicious foods underscores a well deserved and hard earned reputation. One can have any beverage they wish, provided it's from the 5 gallon container on the counter. It contained pink lemonade today - maybe it's that every day. The decor, expectedly, includes images of the band (after all, they named their most highly acclaimed studio album after Dexter's exclamation "Automatic!"), along with reviews from newspapers near and far. Been to Athens multiple times, this was our second time here. You order your meat/entree with the cook and move down to the cashier for you sides. Very efficient and nice people. The first time my man got an "Automatic" for the people. Very memorable. I got the country fried steak, which I normally do not like...It was great. My got the chicken, awesome. On this second trip we friends in time for the annual concert at the 40 Watt. I got the smothered (with gravy) chicken with greens and mach and cheese. Again I usually do not dig on dark meat but again it was awesome. My got the chicken again with green beans and potatoes, he loved it.
