Great BBQ! Definitely not your typical bbq joint but the food is really good. Definitely a go to spot when in Athens.

As huge BBQ as well as ramen enthusiasts, the group I went with was excited about Ramen Night after seeing the video about it. Let's start with the positives. The service was great. Our drinks were quickly brought out to us, filled frequently throughout our stay, and our order was taken quickly. Despite its location a little further out in town, the restaurant setting itself is nice and also clean. The wait for the food was pretty long, but expected since others were also probably eager to try the ramen. Now for the negatives. I hate giving this place such a negative review since it appears that nearly everyone else has enjoyed it, but there was unanimous disappointment from the group regarding the food. The price for what you get is on the pricier end compared to any ramen place you go to. I guess you can expect this since it is a more unique food option and since it's one of the few places outside of Duluth/Norcross where you can find ramen. Two of us got the pulled pork, two others opted for the pulled ribs, and the meat itself was decent, but wasn't any better than the meat in any ramen I've had before. What was especially disappointing though is how salty the food was. I read that the owner commented that some of his customers mentioned there wasn't enough salt in his food. We found that there was so much that the food was just about inedible and the broth undrinkable. It was like taking in a mouthful of seawater. We were also excited about trying the BBQ after hearing other friends comment on it. We had the $20 rack of ribs, and this was also overly salted and overpriced. In addition, the meat was very tough. I might give this place another shot someday since I've heard positive things about the other options on their menu, and I'm hoping that these options aren't overly salted as well. read more

So I'll divide this review into 2 parts: ramen and general BBQ fare. As for the Wednesday night ramen: if you happen to be a ramen enthusiast, do yourself a favor and skip this dish. The broth doesn't have much flavor, and the noodles are overdone. I went with my friend that had never had ramen before, and he thought it was really good. So if you're uninitiated, you might like this. The BBQ elements in the ramen were delicious, though. The collard greens were soft (but not too soft) and flavorful, and the brisket was smoky and tender, and I wanted more. Because of this, I got a plate to go to heat up for lunch the next day, which brings me to the next part of my review. The BBQ was great! I got the pulled pork sandwich and I loved it and so did my mom. What really stood out to me was the banana pudding. It's made from scratch, and has almost a cheesecake like consistency, with fresh banana slices on top. It was a fresh take on a southern favorite. They offer truer own version of some Sandwiches-like a BBQ nest version of a Cuban sandwich and a BBQ Reuben sandwich with collard greens. The potato salad is house-made & on the day we were there the potatoes were quite firm & could have used a little longer cooking time with a little more mustard , eggs, or onion for to give more flavor. Use your GPS to reach the restaurant from the city or the perimeter road. It's a small city so it's not unreasonably hard. Facility 3/5: a well-done job of reuse of an older -it's a rustic but clean building., in an older more industrial side of the city. Trains pass by, so rail enthusiasts and kids will enjoy. I ate here yesterday and it was amazing. Everything on the menu looked good so I got a little bit of everything. The brisket and ribs were perfectly smoked and the baked beans and macaroni definitely satisfied my cravings..also got collard greens and some banana pudding for desert. This is the best BBQ place in town. The meat is pulled pork, ribs, and brisket are amazing. They sometimes do a ramen night, which is awesome. Their sides are delicious. And they have kimchee (for some reason). But that's pretty good as well if you like it salty. They didn't serve alcohol here the last time I came, but you can BYO. There's a great wine and beer store called Shiraz Fine Wines on the other side of the building that has very delicious, high quality brands. You can buy alcohol there and bring it into Pulaski Heights BBQ. read more

The ribs are really good, a little on the lean side, as far as meat goes, but very good smokey flavor, they have the smoker right outside and you can smell the flavor. The staff has always been very nice and make sure that you have everything you need. read more

I read the Flagpole write up an couldn't wait to go. We stopped by on Sunday for an early lunch. The atmosphere, decor, etc... Was top notch. Really cool atmosphere. I read the menu and all the right staples and sides were there to make this a great place. This is the point where you separate the great from the mediocre. The four of us ordered the pulled pork each with slightly different sides. Pulled pork with macaroni and cheese, baked beans, smoked potato salad, and squash casserole. The food arrived promptly enough, but went south from there. First lets talk about the positives. The pulled pork was pretty good. I am particular and was pleased. The small buns to eat in on were a nice touch to. We all ordered this because we were told the chicken and ribs would not be done for another 20 minutes. The presentation of all the food and sides was great, but at the end of the day were here for the food. Now the negatives. The first bite of my "smoked" potato salad immediately told me mistake. The potato I the salad was severely under done. It was crunchy bland and tasteless. I asked my wife for a taste of her baked beans, again severely underdone and lacking taste. Beans were also crunchy. I then took a bite of my squash casserole. Underdone, bland and tasteless. My daughter offered up a taste of her Mac and cheese. Obviously they used a flour/roux thickening technique, but failed here also. The result was a gritty tasteless macaroni and cheese lacking the taste of cheese. We received the bill and realized with gratuity we were paying roughly $16 each for a meal we did not really enjoy. The bottom line is it is a great atmosphere, excellent presentation of over priced poorly executed food. read more

We stumbled upon this BBQ place after a bit of kayaking during the 4th of July weekend. One person in our group was craving BBQ so I called all of the BBQ places I could find on the Yelp app. This was the only one open on July 3 so we trekked over here after leaving the river. I was actually not in the mood for BBQ, because I had just had BBQ the day before and was BBQ'd out. So I opted for the pimento grilled cheese sandwich. I couldn't decide on the side item I wanted, when a dining companion pointed out the daily specials. One was a brisket chili with sour cream, cheese and green onions. It sounded pretty tasty so I decided to get a small order of that as my side item. The pimento grilled cheese was really, really good. It came to the table piping hot and oozing cheese off of the sides. I ate half of the sandwich as is and then decided to dip the other half in their sweet BBQ sauce. That combo is amazingly good. The brisket chili was just as good. It was mostly meat with enough sauce to call it a chili. Thank you, Pulaski Heights BBQ, for not putting any beans in your chili. I adore you for that. All these places have to ruin chili by putting in tons of beans. It was the perfect side to my pimento grilled cheese. The chili was served in a disposable paper boat. Not a big deal, except it kind of didn't hold up the entire time my chili was in it. The edges started to get a bit droopy causing my chili to fall out of the container. Maybe something a little more substantial for your soup/chili? I also got to sample a table-mate's frito pie made with the brisket chili. It was pretty delicious. The koolade was perfectly decanted. The banana pudding was cool and full of fruit. Flavor was detected, experienced, and enjoyed. They fill pork with carcinogens and it is delightful. The Brunswick stew was clearly an afterthought and as such should be avoided. The train passed and I felt like I was pony boy hopping the rails out of town after stabbing that kid. This is not great BBQ. The meats are pretty fatty (I ate with a napkin handy to discreetly make do with the grisly bits) - and we had a ton left over that nobody wanted to eat. We had the collard greens which were flat, and th slaw which was just odd (both not vinegary for a vinegar slaw and now creamy enough for a creamy slaw). You can get much better BBQ in Athens. I'm changing my review (see below) ... I went back recently and had a BBQ sandwich that was -not- mostly burnt ends and I thought it was great! I was not charged for sauce this time-- the owner contacted me after my previous review and told me this must've been a mistake. Also I tried the Brunswick stew and it was just incredible --- super spicy and chunky and maybe the best I've ever had. I'm going to disregard my previous bad experience and hope it was just a fluke. Really- the location is the coolest and the staff is so great! I'm glad i gave it another try! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Past review: In short: any BBQ place that charges extra for sauce needs to rethink pretty much everything. Very sweet little place. The workers were kind and efficient. They were helpful at making suggestions when I was debating my to go order. The sammies are $4.50 and they go up to $9 with sides. Let me start off saying.... I LOVE BBQ and will road trip for the good stuff. Since moving to the area, I have tried EVERY BBQ joint in the metro area. I was disappointed at every single one. But not here. Wow, this was good. Now I finally have a local place for good BBQ. I ate ribs and burnt ends. The burnt ends were the star of the show! The ribs were a good solid 8 on a 10 scale. Cooked perfectly and not over done. Biting the rib requires the perfect amount of effort, which is very little. The meat does not "fall off the bone" which is an indicator of an over cooked rib. When you pick it up, the meat stays on the bone, but once in your mouth it comes off with almost no effort. Re: sides. The squash casserole was great. Mac and cheese was good. The "vinegar lime slaw" was odd. There was a hint of lime and a hint of vinegar- neither were very noticeable. There was no sweetness present. It wasn't bad. I just didn't enjoy it and was unsure what the chef was trying to say here. The kimchee was good, but too spicy for my wife. I tried three sauces. All were fine but I only tasted them. I generally prefer my meat to stand on its own and wont use sauce on well season smoked meat. If you are a sauce person, I'm sure you will find one you like unless you prefer a non vinegar ketchup/molasses type as this was not present. To sum it up : eat here! read more

This review is purely based on my one and only experience while at Pulaski Heights BBQ and based one of their off the menu items that is only served on Wednesdays, the ramen. So, if at all interested in the normal menu items, unfortunately I an unable to speak about those or provide any insight into what's worth trying. The ramen though is definitely worth a trip. I don't think a better marriage of BBQ and ramen is possible. The salty soy broth along with the noodles was paired quite excellently with the traditional BBQ elements that were atop this delicious soup. The collard greens, pulled pork, bacon and soft boiled egg were all delicious and all made sense with the broth, noodles, and one another. The elements of salty, and sour and sweet all danced around this dish and made it a complex but enjoyable experience. I'm not sure how many more successful asian/southern BBQ fusion concepts are achievable, but this is definitely one. read more

Terrible! Terrible! Terrible! I came here, got the brisket. It was the greasiest, most unflavored brisket I have ever ate. I ate it and finished it because I paid for it, however afterwards sat a big spot of grease on my plate, just awful. The beans I order was as salty as the sea and should never be served again. The squash casserole was good but that's about it. I always judge a BBQ place off how it cooks it's brisket because it the hardest to perfect and this place failed miserably. PHBBQ is perhaps one of the best barbecue joints I've ever been to, and it's one of my favorites. It's nestled up in Pulaski Heights next to the train tracks, which makes for a beautiful view while you dine on good food. My absolute favorite thing to order here is the pulled pork sandwich, which is served on a homemade bun with choice of two sides (I usually go for the collards and the mac 'n' cheese). The sauce is great! Nice and flavorful. This restaurant also has the first collard greens I've ever had that were properly seasoned and had flavor. That's major bonus points for me. However, there are pros and cons. The house made pickles are great, but the buns aren't the right bread for the job. The sauces are delicious, but there are only 2. The Mac n cheese was an attempt to make traditional, home style, southern Mac but it was grainy and since it also wasn't hot, the cheese was not melty. Everytime I've been here it has been dead with mostly take out and call ins. That isn't to say this place is bad though. My first visit here I got the side plate, four sides, nothing fancy. The side plate gave me a good feel of what flavors they opted for. I got the smoked cauliflower, since I never see cauliflower on menus often, collards, baked beans, and potato salad. I also tried their mac n cheese and the casserole side. I love collards so without trying to compare them to some I had had recently that were... too good... I'd say PHBBQ's aren't bad at all. Definitely pleased. The baked beans are not sweet... so if you like them sweet then it might be disappointing. They have a vinegar taste to them. Potato salad was standard as was the mac. The smoked cauliflower I think I was expecting too much. Not bad, but it lacked... smoke... or defined taste. The pulled pork was excellent and so are their pickles. A memo on the venue-- The Space is cool, but the patio is bare and right by the tracks. The trains that do come through will have to blow their horns since you're also by a crossing. Needless to say, it does get pretty loud. Inside it's not a big deal though. Anyways, I'm eager to hopefully try more on their menu. We went for an early dinner on the weekend, and they were not crowded (lucky us). Parking was easy. Hostess/waitress seated us right away. They have an outdoor area with picnic tables, which will be great when it's not so hot. The inside is cool, industrial, not a whole lot of seating. They allow you to BYOB. Otherwise, they have cold brew, tea, and specialty sodas. The menu includes a nice variety of bbq entrees that come with 2 sides, and their side offerings are impressive. They also have salads, sandwiches, and tacos. Husband ordered the burnt ends with squash casserole (he loved this) and kimchi (12$), and I had the small pulled pork with smoked cauliflower (tasted indulgent somehow) and more Kimchi (9$)! Their vinegar sauce and sweet tomato are on all tables, but you gotta ask for the Carolina mustard sauce from the menu. That sauce is so delicious. When it comes to BBQ restaurants it just doesn't get any better than PHBBQ. This is not your back alley joint; this is upscale modern yet relaxed refinement in a hipster neighborhood. I'VE NOW HAD THE PULLED PORK and salad no less than 39 times and love it every time. That, the amazing salad with home made pickled okra, and the friendly service is what i base the 5-stars on. There are two sauces. I always go for the North Carolina (vinegar) style; this sauce is tangy and not sweet. it is smokey and seems to have just enough vinegar to give it real zest. The ribs are great too, but I recommend getting the ribs that have "gone back on the grill a second time;" in other words, if you like the meat to fall off the bone, ask for yesterday's ribs. If you like your pork fresh just order straight up. Stick with ribs, pulled pork or the fish tacos and you can do no wrong here. Interest was piqued when I saw a video about their bbq ramen. Ramen night is on Wednesday and starts at 5:30pm. I arrived with a big group around 6pm and the place was already packed. We were told that a wait for an inside table for a group of 7 was about 45 min. The weather was okayish, like 50 to 60F, so we decided to get a table outside. The wait for food was pretty long. We waited for at least 45 min before our food came out. There was another big table next to us, who were there before us, and we overheard them saying that they had been waiting for almost an hour and their bbq ramen still hadn't come out. I got the pulled rib ramen. The ramen comes with an egg, collard greens, a piece of bacon, your choice of protein (in my case pulled ribs), noodles, a sheet of seaweed, and a garnish of scallions. The ramen broth was a bit too salty for my taste. The collard greens in the ramen were a bit vinegary and were a nice refreshing touch. The bacon was fatty and tender. It just melted in my mouth. The pulled ribs were really good. It was smokey and flavorful. Overall, the ramen was okay. However, the bbq meat was really good. I probably won't come again for the ramen, but would come for the bbq meats. read more

Wow, where to start? This restaurant is perfectly located away from busy downtown, in a nice quiet and relaxing neighborhood. It's also "pet-friendly" which is one of the main reasons we came here.
