I picked up the GSP from where it meets I-80 in Saddle Brook north to the New York border and becomes the Garden State Parkway Connector to I-287, the New York State Thruway. Only 11 miles of superhighway and for the privilege of driving on it, I was charged $1.90 for my out of state toll transponder. $0.17 per mile seems like a lot considering it was over in 10 minutes. Traffic was moving swiftly - I was going 70ish and getting passed by others consistently. The roadway is smooth and the toll plaza was easy to negotiate. One thing they seem to do well is take money. There are service areas along the way - I stopped at Montvale - so that you don't have to get off the roadway and search around for food or fuel. I'd choose the GSP again to drive through New Jersey. The Garden State Parkway for the most part is a decent highway for those who want to travel conveniently with no trucks along with commercial vehicles. I have not traveled on the entire parkway leaving me with a lot of info to share, but expect most traffic to occur from the Thruway (the northern terminus) until reaching Hockhockson, mainly due to connections with NYC. I have not experienced any problems, but anyone who has limited knowledge of this area, pull up Google Maps and have it in handy when needed. Be prepared for tollage along the stretch, and the costs. Along the whole parkway, there are service areas to stop to eat and rest. Drive safely and carefully on this parkway. read more

Updated Review: Still a great way to get around the state of NJ. The roads are well maintained, cleaned and upgraded often compared to other states. The sides and medians of the highway are lush green and often filled with wildlife. The sunsets as you drive can be beautiful in this open area parkway. It is a relaxing way to go if the traffic is not bumper to bumper. The only caveats are the tolls, the speedsters that pass you at a high rate of speed as you are going 75 mph, and the times when there is heavy traffic. The tolls have skyrocketed in recent years so the EZ pass is boss if you don't want to have a bag of change in your car. It gets you where you need to go read more

I like the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey because it takes me down the Jersey Shore every summer. Sometimes, there are accidents on the parkway because cars can cause accidents/crashes. It's time to replace my old, short review. It also looks like I'm throwing a star over a bridge from my old review. Ready? Here we go. Ahh, the Garden State Parkway. Before, the farthest that I ever traveled was up to NJ-17 in Paramus, and Cape May in South Jersey. In regards to today's long distance travel, I always utilize this toll road whenever I have to visit relatives in South Jersey, crossover to the NJ Turnpike, and attend the enjoyable, once-in-a-while G.Y.E.'s in Paramus (NJ-4). Whenever there aren't any traffic or weather-related issues, then it's a really smooth ride with the activation of "Sport" mode (the only reason why I give one extra star). Having the satellite radio on to Today's Dance Hits with remixes of Today's Hit Music makes the drive even more enjoyable, even when I have to drive into issues that arise during the utilization of this toll road. Whenever there are traffic issues, then the trip gets delayed. It's annoying to everyone who's eager to get to where they need to be at. During rush hour (between 4PM and 7PM), much of the traffic moves either slowly or in a "stop and go" movement. This always happens every single time I drive up to the Union Toll Booth, and in and around the Irvington area. If there were accidents around there (which obviously causes delays too), I would have understand, but the fact that there wasn't any always left me wondering on why this usually happens. Weather can also delay traffic here too, but there's nothing we can do about that besides slowing down and driving carefully. There was one time when I was driving in the night, and there was a cop driving in a "swerving" way on every lane of the toll road to prevent other drivers from driving past. Every time someone tried to drive past a cop, the cop would immediately swerve over to make that driver slow down. In fact, it made everyone slow down significantly, which also caused some delays right up to a toll booth. This was in favor of some construction vehicles picking up cones across the general area. Speaking of construction, that also led to delays, especially when they blocked the lanes. There were even some parts of the parkway when they didn't do a good job of blocking out the old road decals in favor of the new ones. Even though the new ones were clear, some old ones were still visible. That was quite confusing, and could have led to accidents. This was somewhere in South Jersey. Let's not forget about the toll booths. They are really pricey, especially when you drive through more than one. There was even one time when a toll collector closed out a lane at the last minute, which made people waiting in line drive through the EZ Pass lane. One of the drivers screamed at the person for doing so. I can't believe a toll collector would do something like that. Even toll booths can be the cause for traffic-related delays, just like the Union Toll Booth right at the I-78 interchange. Look out for the cops who like to run radar there. Also, watch out for the lunatic drivers as well. Sure they are in a rush to get somewhere, but that doesn't mean they should cause some hazardous driving conditions. Well, if we have to go someplace that is down the shore, or located somewhere up North, then we have to do what we must in order to get there. We may not enjoy utilizing this toll road, but we may enjoy being at the place where we need to be at! read more

Meh. It's a toll road. I get mugged all the way down while heading to the Jersey Shore spots of Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights, Atlantic City, etc, or wherever I am going. At times I can fly all the way down when traffic is light, but when traffic is heavy it becomes a horrible crawl. Also, what is up with all the speed limit changes? At some areas it's 65 then at some points it's 55. It's such a pain and seems to be set up as one long speed trap for the sole purpose of the state troopers to hand out speeding tickets. Also, paying tolls sucks. At least they have express lanes for EZ pass, and rest/food plazas along the way. I will give it credit as it is well maintained, has some nice scenery along the sides, and you can pretty much take it all the way from the northern part of Jersey to Cape May. Just keep an eye out for the state troopers hiding out along the way as you are doing 75 while just passing a 55mph speed sign. I haven't been caught yet and hopefully never will. read more

I lived in New Jersey for several years during my early and mid-twenties. One day, my father was driving his BMW M5 on the Garden State Parkway while I was riding in the passenger seat. Earlier in the day he had the tires replaced. While we were driving on the parkway, one of the new tires came off the BMW and my father lost control of the vehicle. The car swerved to the right and hit a guardrail. We went airborne. My side of the windshield exploded, sending broken glass everywhere. The airbag went off in my face, smashing my glasses and sending even more glass into my face. When the car finally came back down to earth it flipped over several times before landing some branches. The car was totaled from the accident, though the worst damage was on my side of vehicle. My father and I survived, but if we weren't in such a well-built car it would have probably been a different story. Surprisingly enough, a police cruiser was riding right behind us on the parkway and witnessed the entire accident. "I can't believe anyone came out of that car alive!" the police officer exclaimed while helping us out of the wreckage. He radioed an ambulance and it arrived within minutes. My accident happened around the same time that our then governor, Jon Corzine, was also involved in a car crash on the Garden State Parkway. read more

People who live in Jersey and travel this roadway often, will get this. It can feel very long to get to where your going. Meaning other than a few rest stops, there's basically nothing. It can get scenic the more south you head. When you reach the Pine Barrens, where the infamous episode of the Sopranos was filmed in the winter is nice. If you want to hit the ''shore" this is the road to get you there. As a kid a bunch of us would travel to Wildwood for all the major summer holidays. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. At one point nothing but smooth sailing, then all of sudden bumper to bumper traffic. There are express lanes but only for 22 miles, which is where I'd enter off the NJ Turnpike Exit 11. With E-Z Pass I don't know what the toll charge is, used to be 35 cents. At least I can see that toll money and our taxes are being used, the roadway is in good shape. Bottom line it's a road that if your traveling to a particular place on the coast, you would have to use. Make sure your well caffeinated, before you head out. read more

Well, I was on this road, when driving to West Orange on Saturday, and I was driving on this parkway. I guess its nice, but very crowded, and near dangerous areas. Old, faded, barely visible road signs, even when I'm wearing my glasses or contacts. Poor, or in most cases, nonexistent lighting. Random toll stops throughout, including $1.50 going northbound toward Paramus, even if I'm not going to Paramus. Insane drivers with minimal policing. Speed limit fluctuates between 55 and 65. Opportunistic for hydroplaning when it rains due to uneven road surfaces, and occasional lane closures when the state takes its time to conduct construction. I only use this road to get to/from home. Otherwise, I would prefer the turnpike. read more

Well maintained toll highway with the usual speed traps. Certain sections are toll free (depending on where you hop on/off and exit). The pace is fast and furious - unless you're stuck in traffic then it's a torturous crawl. Good: - Lanes are plentiful - canyonero! Ehhh: - Lanes feel a shade narrower somehow ... - Watch out for the Local vs Express exits south of the Driscoll! Don't miss yours! - Traffic: NB (131 northward), SB (142-135, Driscoll, shore), all around. Uggh. Tips: -Get EZ Pass - the cash lane lines snarl up the other lanes! -The left lane is not always the fastest, the right lane tends to get hit with merging traffic from on ramps. read more

As a born-and-bred NJ resident, I live by the "GSP." Minus the frequent tolls, it's a great road that spans the entire state. Since I grew up in southern NJ (Exit 36), and I now live in the northern half (Exit 140-ish), I drive it often to visit the parents. Although the tolls are a pain in the ass, most toll plazas have ez-pass express lanes so you don't even have to slow down. Also as a result of the tolls, there is often lane repair and expansion which really helps to alleviate traffic problems and keep the roads pleasant to drive on. There are two major arteries in NJ. The turnpike and the GSP. It seems like no matter where in NJ you are, there are signs to either one. I'll usually take the GSP when I am heading to the shore. Plenty of lanes and it splits into Express and Local lanes at some point. It is a toll road, although it's cheaper than the turnpike. Most of the tolls are once you enter or exit the Parkway. I think it's $1.50 now. It used to be $.35 cents but that was when I was a kid. You can get to all of the NY crossings(Holland,GW,Lincoln and Vertazanno) via GSP. There are plenty of troopers watching though so be wary of speeding. read more

The Parkway, I love this road. It's my gateway back home. Exit 63 for me. This is a very clean road, no advertising, well kept. The addition of rapid easypass has made the road more efficient. They are expanding lanes in the Southern portion hoping to alleviate AC traffic. This road is wonderful. read more

The new paving on the parkway from exit 98 to 38 is terrible .when you drive on a newly paved road you shouldn't feel like you're on a roller coaster.I have a brand-new truck and when I was driving I thought I needed shocks very dangerous I don't know what company paved this road but we shouldn't be paying for it terrible !!!!! read more

One of the main highways in NJ and one of the best. Taking this will bring you down to the shore, AC, and beyond! However, it is always congested during rush hour (heavier in some parts than others) and if you are going to the beach, make sure you're on the road by 7:30 am the latest. Decent road system. Lived in NJ for a while and used to drive this route often. Wish tools in NY and NJ were a bit more reasonable though.

Parkway is out of date. Instead of tolls at exit they have them about every 20 miles. Really slows down traffic. Avoid the parkway south on Fri afternoon, Sat morning, Sun morning and avoid parkway north Sunday afternoon. Plus side of this highway they keep road clear during inclement weather. read more

Very rarely do I run into a major traffic jam on when on the GSP. This highway has many lanes, plus express and local lanes. It is a real pleasure, mostly because 18 Wheelers are not allowed on it. It is also the preferred route to go to Atantic City :) read more
