This place was a great find! My friend hadn't been to a Salvadorean place before so we were excited to introduce him to the tamales cooked in banana leaves. They were smaller than the ones we have gotten before but just as tender. Hubby ended up getting a second one. They had a lot of pupusas options so we opted to try different ones of those. I didn't really like what I got but what my husband got was great. The dessert nuegados we got were not my thing but I was glad to at least try them and my friend liked them so it all worked out. Again, I stumbled upon this restaurant by shear luck. It is a trove of good foods. The server, her name was Edith, she was most helpful. I was immediately greeted and seated upon my arrival. Actually, I was able to choose which table that I wanted to dine at. I started off with a fresh cup of coffee. It was piping hot, which is the only way that I like it. After placing my order I enjoyed seeing the interactions between the diners and their family. Also, the people that came into the restaurant after I was seated were greeted with such warmth and genuine love from the staff that it took me back in time when life was less complicated. When life was a simple time for everyone. A time when the cellphone wasn't even an idea in the minds of our great innovators. This establishment is not located on the main streets, it's located around the corner of a major road but obscured from view. So surprise number one is that....... They had a revolving door of clientele during my dining experience there. More visitors came and went than I see in main stream restaurant facilities. That in itself should tell you something about not only the food but about the people that work there. After I ordered I must be truthful, the food was not brought out immediately but that was truly a good thing which I will share why that is soon. First, the observation from an old man saw every occupied table with friends and family visiting with each other. Not a cell phone in sight, no disruption from a ringing phone. No inconsiderate cell phone man talking at a noise decibel that makes one feel they are sitting with you in a small enclosure. It was beautiful, nobody hurrying, nobody uptight and most importantly, No one ignored in favor of a cell phone texter or talker. It was undivided attention across the entire spectrum. That's good old day memories for me. When my meal arrived it was well worth the wait and now I will share with you why I don't mind waiting a little longer for a meal while dining in a small restaurant. It's because the order is not pre-made sitting under heat-lamps or inside of stainless steel containers placed over a heating source. Oh no, my breakfast was being made after I placed the order. That my friends adds a whole new dimension to good, quality, well prepared menu items. I have become obsessed with the Salvadorean culinary wonder known as the papusa. Papuseria Salvadorena is a humble papuseria located in not the best part of Nashville, Tennessee, but I recall a meme that offered the sage statement that the best tacos are found in neighborhoods that will never be considered a "desirable address." I believe the actual quote was more akin to the worse the neighborhood, the better the taco. Judging by my visit to Papuseria Salvadorena, I guess the same can be said about papusas. I ordered two papusas (pork and cheese) and since the walls were rather thin and the place is very small, I could hear the kitchen performing their magic. I was anticipating a grand lunch and would soon discover that I was not to be disappointed. My papusas were brought in a timely manner and with my first bite, I knew that I stumbled upon a great culinary find. The papusas were wonderful and proof that a meal can be both humble and fantastic. These papusas were very good and the accompanying cabbage in vinegar (I liken it to a Salvadorean coleslaw) enhanced the papusas. It took a little longer for food to come Steak was rather thin than what we expected and little dry. Soup was nice. It had whole one leg inside the bowl and vegetable. Vegetables and chicken were cooked very well and all of them were so soft and tasty. This place is good! For starters, like most ethnic places, it is insanely cheap. My entire meal of two queso con loroco pupusas cost a meager $4.92, after tax. About $2 seems average for most of the pupuseria spots around town, which is mind blowing considering how filling they are. I will say that unlike La Usuluteca, which is still my favorite, they do not give you chips and salsa with your meal. In all fairness, you really don't need those chips because two pupusas are more than enough to put anyone of moderate hunger down for the count. The pupusas here are slightly thicker, lighter, and fluffier than the ones of which I am accustom. They get bonus points for having loroco, which I hear other spots don't have. I was given a large bowl of curtido with my pupusas, which I can never get enough of. It wasn't as fresh or as crisp as I like but even mentioning that is probably being overly critical. Minor tidbits: They don't take cards, so it is cash only. English speaking staff seems non-existent so there was a bit of a language barrier but who cares, just point at what you want and grunt. I met a colleague for a lunch and wanted to try something different and something authentic. Pupuseria Salvadorena fit the bill. The service was friendly and patient, even though we were the only non-fluent Spanish speakers in the restaurant. We ordered several pupusas (cheese with chicken and vegetable) and a chicken dish. They accidentally brought me a beef dish and then apologized profusely. I stuck with the adventure and enjoyed it. The the ingredients were fresh and the flavors and textures were a delight. My colleague enjoyed the pupusas and was stuffed after two. I washed my food down with a large horchata and my colleague with a sugary but addictive grape Tropical soda. "What the hell's that" I quizzed, fearing we were about to run over an obscure breed of small native animal. Well, it turns out a pupuseria is a place that makes pupusas...and that is not something you swaddle a new baby in, nor is it the aforementioned inhabitant of the animal world. It's food, and, they are good. So, you see, there is always something new to learn about the culinary universe. A papusa is a Salvadorean tortilla stuffed with goodies of the edible kind. This is a delightful, small local eatery patronized mainly, it seems, by happy, hungry Salvadoreans...who, apparently, know a good feed when they spot it. The cafe itself is neat, though well worn, comfortable, and staffed by a friendly, partially pregnant bunch of women from El Salvador who happily let me know all about the local food...and when the new Bub arrives. We stopped only for lunch. The portions were enormous. The taste was exceptional and the bill was very low indeed. This pupuseria is a godsend. I moved to Nashville from LA a few months ago, something I wouldn't have been able to do had I not found a solid pupusa spot prior to moving here. My family is from El Salvador and pupusas are our lifeblood, we make them from scratch at home and have a solid restaurant we've been going to for over a decade. The quality at this location is on par with my family's favorite pupusa spot. So far I've had their pupusas (duh), desayuno tipico with chorizo (standard salvi breakfast with veggies and chorizo scrambled into eggs), tamales de maiz and some of their fruit juices. The service is good, prices are reasonable and the food tastes authentic and is well made. You seat yourself and pay at the cashier on the way out. They have 2 small TVs in the corners (good for world cup watching) and sell desserts to go. If you've never had Salvadoran food I'd reccomend giving this spot a try. The restaurant is right off Nolensville Rd, on Welch. In a stand-alone building with limited parking. There are plenty of seating, and the restaurant is old and out-dated, but for the most part clean. We ordered a variety of pupusas including the pork, beans, and cheese and the cheese and loroco as well as the steak plate. The food came out in a reasonable time. The pupusas was served with salsa and slaw. The were pretty good, flavorful, and dough was crispy on the outside, and tender in the inside. However, the steak plate was not good. From the first time I ate here I've been a huge fan and it is definitely my go-to place for pupusas now. The pork & cheese pupusas are to die for, and the 'slaw' they give you to top them with actually has a bit of a spicy bite to it, unlike a lot of places that serve the same thing. It's absolutely delicious. They have a pretty nice assortment of menu items, and so far everything I've tried has been quite delicious, but I keep going back to the pupusas. The prices are very low (2 pupusas will fill you up and cost just a bit more than $4) and the staff is quite friendly. Just to clarify a couple of things, a few previous reviews for this place mention not taking cards and also a bit of a "language barrier". For the record, they DO take cards (including AmEx), and the servers I've had when I've been there have had no problem speaking english perfectly fine. I definitely recommend this place for a delicious cheap lunch, excellent pupusas, and some of the best horchata you'll ever have! read more

Delicious! Two carne asada tacos! Revuelta pupusa (beans, cheese, pork)! (My first experience with pupusas. Man, I have been missing out for 35+ years...) Refreshing curtido (like cole slaw with a kick)! Cinnamon-y sweet horchata! Free entertainment via telenovela! Everything came to less than $7 before tip. (Others have said cash only. I didn't try a credit card, but I'm going to assume that greenbacks rule here.) Reasonably crowded. Seems popular with a demographic that should be able to judge the authenticity of the cooking. I hope to go back soon and often. Why not 5-stars? - The benches are comfortable, but the metal chairs are a little...industrial. On the other hand, they do look indestructible. - I was not blown away by either the verde or rojo salsa. But maybe El Salvadorean salsas are supposed to taste different than Mexican salsas? This is my favorite pupusaria, hands down. It's just luck of the draw as to whether or not you get someone there who speaks English very well but don't let that hold you back. They have pupusas with your choice of cheese, beans, or pork or any combination of those or they have cheese and loroco. They serve it with a bowl of curtido and the typical red sauce. Their curtido has a little heat unlike most versions I have had but it's good. They also have great carne asada tacos. The carne asada plate is also great. They have a great really hot salsa verde but it's really more of a creamy hot jalepeno sauce. And talk about cheap! One pupusa with everything, one carne asada taco, and an imported coke is around $5. read more

This dish ($6) was big enough to be a full meal. Had two papusas at $2.50 a pop. One mixed (beans, pork, cheese) and one pork and cheese. They were fantastic. Looking for a good, filling ethnic meal for $10 or less? This is your place. Pupusas are popular in Central America, particularly El Salvador. Pupusas are round, flat, fat pancake - like items made from masa de maiz. They are stuffed with a variety of things including cheese, beans and cheese, pork and so on. They are lightly fried and served with a cole slaw type mixture that you put over the pupusa. You can also add a little hot sauce. I had two bean and cheese pupusas and one chicken taco for less than $6. The pupusas were wonderful and not greasy. The refried beans were very tasty and not from a can. The chicken taco was authentic - on two small corn tortialls and a little onion. The chicken was full of flavor. One of the best I've had in town. My dining companion had three pupusas, a Coke with sugar (not corn syrup) and a pastry for $10. I will definatly return as the food is wonderful and the price is right. The atmosphere is typical of so many ethnic places with plain tables and chairs and a TV playing Spanish language soap operas. The folks were very nice. We had no problem overcoming the language barriers. The menu is in Spanish, so is you are very uncertain, take a friend that can read the menu. A couple months ago my husband and I had really good pupusas while in Belize. We were craving some and found this restaurant, which we loved. The pupusas were great! Our favorite was the cheese and pork. So good! And only $2.50 each. We also had quesadillas (its what our kids always get and they said they were good) and the carne asada (really yummy!!).
