Made my first visit to the new(ish) location of Purchase Street Records today and it's pretty awesome. It's like the classic 80's record stores that are all long gone! Tons of vinyl, CD's, Cassettes, pins, patches, posters and lots of other odds and ends. A great selection of music in all genres and formats. Originals and reissues, live stuff, imports, picture discs, 7"s and more. If you can't find something you want in this store than you're not a music fan! Roger and the staff know their stuff and know what they have. They can also make recommendations based on what you're into. They have high end collectible records, new releases, classic and even a section of $2 records. Check out purchase street and tell them I sent you!! Been wanting to come forever, finally had a chance to get there just a few days after they opened up the new location. Excellent all the way around. I'm mostly after punk (specifically 90s to current). While they didn't have a specific section for it I found stuff that I was interested in several different areas of the store. I could have dropped $500 without thinking about it if I had it. Strongly recommend stoping here if your a rock vinyl collector. read more

Dope record shop. Prices are very fair. I Visited family for the week and stopped in 3 times. A small shop loaded to the brim with vinyl, cassettes, cds, and all kinds of memorabilia. They had pressings that I couldn't find anywhere else except for double the price (or more) on eBay. Roger buys in bulk, to ensure he gets enough for his customers so they don't miss out. Visit this place and support your local record shop. You are lucky to have this gem in your backyard. The guy that wanted bluegrass sounds like he wanted a blue eye. read more

I found this shop a few years ago when it was it it's original location. It was a tight fit but homey place. Roger always made you feel like you were his special guest. I thought it was easy because of the size. It wasn't the place, it is him. This new location is huge and roomy and with 20 other people in there Roger still is welcoming and makes you feel like his shop is yours too. The records and everything else are so easy to access. There is just so much to poke through. Rap, indie, pop, punk, 80s and classic rock, heavy metal, black metal... plus so much more! This WILL be your favorite record store!! read more

This is one of the best record stores I have ever been to. There's so much merchandise and 3 walls full of rare first or limited edition pressing. They mainly specialize in Classic Rock, Metal genres, and punk, but they have some goth rock, new wave, post-punk, hip-hop, Jazz, and soul too. They also have these awesome metal themed garden gnomes on a shelf. Sometimes the price doesn't always match with what it's worth. But that's something that any relatively new store can run into, especially if the owners and people pricing aren't enthusiasts about certain genres that they are pricing. And even if you're not 100% sure about the price, the staff is always willing to talk to you about your concerns and are very honest about how they price (they do not price higher on purpose). Overall this store is great, the people are wicked nice, and are always there to help. The store's clean and they have an old gaming system where you can play Pac-Man (for the non-vinyl lovers who don't want to stand around for hours). I'm really glad that Purchase St Records has made New Bedford its home. So if you're in the New England area looking to buy Metal, rare Death Metal records, or even some UK New Wave imports, this is definitely the place to go! read more

Roger Chouinard has created a vinyl paradise on busy Purchase Street. Walk in and be surrounded by an amazing collection of records from all genres. There are collectables as well. I think it's so hip and cool to play vinyl. My daughter recently stayed at the Redbury on South Beach and each room had a record player and record collection. I hope to get back to vinyl. Until then, it's fun to explore the collection here at Purchase Street Records. read more

Purchase Street Records is AMAZING!!!! It is the gem of record stores for Massachusetts. The selection is great, the owner is incredibly helpful, and the store is well organized! The store specializes in Heavy Metal, but it has a terrific selection of classic rock. I found a first printing of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" in NM condition for a more than reasonable price. They have a great selection of Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc. Do yourself a favor and spend some time there!!! read more

Heard about this place by listening to WHJY, took the 45 min drive and decided to check it out. Hands down the BEST place to find music of all genre's. Personally, i listen to everything and whenever i visit, i FIND stuff. LOTS of rare and first pressing records, you will also find cd's,posters,patches and shirts. The owner Roger is awesome,helpful and loves to talk music. For me, thats important,because it makes me feel like i'm hanging out with a friend, instead of just being a "customer". The second time i came in, he introduced me to some other regular customers and to another friend of his, we all said hi to each other, then to me it felt like eveyone was old friends...Thats the power of music and how it can bring people together. I might have gone off track, its my first ever review, but i love this place, and hope everyone will stop by and check it out. Thank You. read more

He even has a classic arcade game that's free for my kids while I browse his extensive collection. The selection is pretty good but the prices in the store are so high it might as be extortion. I'm pretty sure the owner actually prices things by seeing what the highest price any given record has ever sold for on discogs. I've seen at least one record selling used for ten times the retail price for a brand new copy. It makes me sad that this is the first record store in New Bedford in years. Apparently he's doing alright though because I guess he knows how to fleece people who don't have the sense to look around at other stores or just check discogs. Either that or he doesn't need the money. I really don't know but in any case I can't believe the praise this shop gets. Cheap records that should be priced anywhere from 5-15 bucks start at around 20-25. There's hardly anything in the shop below that price. I've been collecting records for well over a decade and going into a place like this and seeing what they think are fair prices is insulting to my intelligence. Stick with Sunset Records in Somerset or the Armageddon Shop in Providence, they both have great selections and fair prices. Hell you'd be better off at a half way decent flea market booth than this rip off joint. read more
