Wow! I'm addicted! Jacksonville Fitness Academy has to be one of the best kept secrets in the…read moreJacksonville area! If you're serious about growing physically and pressing past your boundaries safely and professionally, this is the place for you! Led by owners Catherine and Patrick Henigan, their passion and dedication set the tone for a phenomenal experience. The atmosphere is welcoming yet you immediately feel a sense of responsibility to put in work - bring your best. The best part? This facility has a smalltown feel with everything you need to bust your ass and breakthrough to the next level. There are no frills or places to hide. In Catherine's words "this is YOUR workout!" Excellent instruction is provided but the rest is up to you. You have to want it and if you do everything you need is there for you to break past what you think you're capable of and exceed your own expectations. I took the Booty Bootcamp class on Friday evening then got all bold and took the Striking and Conditioning class Saturday morning. I can say that both were tough for me but in the best way! I love the one on one attention to form and how I'm allowed to realize my own potential. Sure I was pushed beyond what I thought I could do. However there was a space where I saw that I needed to decide what I desired because that will help my trainers to better assist me in getting there. I showed up wanting to improve my health by improving my body. I left knowing that there's much more to this for me than that. I'm up for the challenge! It's all about smaller classes for a more personalized and individualized approach. There are also semi-private and private training sessions available in addition to Bad Ass Barre. It's been just about 7 months since the doors opened and I know Jax Fitness Academy will be around for decades to come.

Let's begin this saying that as a career long sales person I understand the pressure to make a sale…read moreas an associate. I also can see a sales pitch beginning a mile away and I think the tactics used by likely the entirety of Pure Barre are predatory and it's probably not only this location. But I'll never go to another one, so you'll have to let me know. I took an intro class today and liked the class. When I was first called to book it I was asked if I was ready to make the time and financial commitment which I thought was a little weird of an ask but okay. Upon going to the class, they made it a point to introduce you to everyone which was lovely. Class was pretty standard. The studio was clean, no frills, basic set up. The fact the studio is carpeted is strange and gave me the ick but was willing to look over the intense lighting and that for a good new studio. I previously had a studio I went to 5 times a week so I'm not new to this format of class. After the class, they had us come into a circle and sit on the floor like we were in grade school. They ask everyone how they felt and their goals and if they are ready to make a commitment today to do this and sign up. I mean they literally go around person by person and ask this - which is wildly uncomfortable for many people to talk about that in front of a group of strangers. Then they tell you about their only 2 membership options - mind you, there are more online. When I was leaving everyone was signing up for memberships. Good for them. Pretty hard to feel comfortable leaving that scenario without signing up. When you look both online and in the app they offer a 4 class, 8 class, and unlimited. Heck, they even offer a drop in! I asked about the 4 class pass. I'm new to the area and don't want to commit to a studio at that level. The associate told me they don't offer that any longer because she felt the clients didn't get the results they wanted. To which I pulled up another way to purchase a 4 class pass to which she remarked, "do you feel you can get the results you want with only 4 classes a month?" My reply "I think that's for me to decide." But seriously, don't shame someone into thinking they need to commit to something . When I was clearly uninterested in any other levels than the 4 pass she said she could actually approve that on the back end and it was a special deal they only give existing clients to keep them taking classes. So, it is an option. You would just rather pitch only two in hopes to make a sale. Be aware of this process. The people I met were kind, they seem bought into their culture which is nice, but I think this entire sales process is disgusting and from further research online this is a Pure Barre process, not the employees in particular.

If that wasn't enough, when you leave the heated room and go into the lobby, and happen to be unfortunate enough to make eye contact or strike a "casual" conversation with the staff, they will pour upon you the exact same 10-minute sales pitch you heard just 30 seconds ago. If you are not interested, never, ever tell them it's due to financial reasons, because they have got another 15-minute long sales pitch regarding the sweet sweet payment plans. Usually by now, I've already spent 5 minutes internally begging God for a merciful release. And I haven't yet touched upon the multiple phone calls and emails yet. Let's save that for later. During my time at this place, I must have wasted an aggregate 200 minutes of my life listening to these used car salesmen. That's 200 minutes that I could have spent taking tango lessons, or meditating, or cliff diving.

The room is heated just right and they do not play music, which seems to be rare but I love the silence. You will feel healthy and amazing after a class, and see results! One constructive criticism- maybe have a different class for fresh out of school yoga teachers. One where students can give feedback, maybe costs less. There is sometimes a great discrepancy in the skill of the instructors, but we pay for the same classs.

She is currently working out of an area of her home which is a very large area with 4 Pilates reformer machines ( I am pretty sure that is what they are called) until her brand new location opens at the new area they are building on Roberts Road. I have been having some hip pain - so much so that my last Dr visit my Dr requested an MRI and I was not able to sit on a chair/couch with my leg underneath me with out hip pain and even walking on uneven surface such as even grass would cause my hip to be in pain. I would say my hip pain was about a 4 (out of 1-10 and 10 being worst) - this coupled with me getting "up there" in age, I wanted to make sure that I found something to help with balance and range of motion. All the web searches I did pointed at Pilates. My first time I went here was probably a mess and I am thankful that Haley did not laugh at me. I could not even finish some of the starter moves/exercises/stretch's etc that she asked me to do. But now after a month I am pain free in my hip! I can sit with my leg tucked underneath me without pain and everything else with no hip pain. I notice it is easier for me to get up from a chair, doing a sit up to get out of bed. All is so much easier thanks to Haley and St Johns Pilates. My only regret is not finding her sooner in life, but at least I am back to having pain free and motions that are no longer stiff.
