I'm a founding member, left for a year due to work. However returned when I came back home because I missed it soooooo much. Instructors are full of energy, classes always challenging. Gretchen is awesome, has a great OHANA of instructors. All are different but fun personalities, pushing you in their barre loving ways. #barrealoha

Left photo - I was super unhappy/uncomfortable, but started Pure Barre two days later. Right photo - happy, confident, and inspired!

I have always wanted to take barre classes, but have always been intimidated to do so. However, I recently got engaged and my work sent me out to Hawaii for three months, so I figured it was the perfect time to get back on track and in shape for the wedding. After researching the local barre studios, I signed up for the "Bride to Be" three month package at Pure Barre Kahala and showed up for my first class ridiculously nervous. Luckily, I had nothing to worry about. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you are made to feel like you belong. Everyone is nice, helpful, and encouraging - from the girls at the front counter that greet you and check you in, to your instructor (I haven't had a bad one yet!), to the owner, Gretchen, and even your fellow classmates. I've never been very coordinated or extroverted, so I usually avoid group exercise classes like this, but I am so glad I gave it a try. The way class is set up, everyone is working up their own sweat that you aren't anyone's focus, except when the instructors come and kindly correct your form. I now see muscles in my arms that I haven't seen in years, I feel amazing, and I am much more confident and happy now. My three months is almost up and I am about to go back to the mainland, but I have to say that finding Pure Barre and Gretchen, Lia, Leah, Holly, Talaya, and everyone else at PB Kahala, was probably my favorite thing about my stay here in Hawaii. If you are on the fence about trying it out, you should definitely give it a shot - you won't regret it!

Interested in trying a barre class? Now is the time to do with Pure Barre Honolulu. All classes are currently online (due to Covid-19), giving you the opportunity to try something new in the comfort of your home. You don't even need to be seen if you don't feel comfortable leaving your camera on. The instructors are the best! They always greet you and make you feel welcomed. And they're always willing to help. But don't let their sweet persona deceive you, they make you work during class! Classes are challenging no matter how long you've been going. I was very reluctant to try barre because I thought it was a joke of a work out. Then I went to my first class with Lindsey and could barely keep up. I had to prove to myself that I could do it and I quickly became addicted. So what are you waiting for? Sign up for a class with Pure Barre Honolulu today!

I originally discovered The Bar Method back in 2017. Barre is deceptively challenging, and I was quickly humbled by the workout. I remember grabbing heavy hand weights when I first walked into the barre studio, since I was accustomed to throwing around a lot of weight in CrossFit...and then wasn't even able to make it through warm up! Since that day, I religiously attended barre four times per week, and it became my sanity amidst the chaos of being a business owner, mom, boss, wife, etc. When I found out I was pregnant with my second child, the instructors were supportive, initially maintaining confidence while privately demonstrating modifications. I was blessed with an easy pregnancy, and I attribute a large part of that to barre keeping me disciplined and strong. I continued taking classes throughout my entire pregnancy until my daughter decided to make a quick entrance into the world...and I gave birth in the car on our way to the hospital! I again think the mental toughness that comes from getting through your third set of thigh work helped me through that amazing delivery. I'd highly encourage everyone to check out The Bar Method! It's a safe yet tough workout that really does help you stay healthy - both physically and mentally.

I'm three months postpartum, and the classes offered provide the perfect workout and challenge for me, as modifications are also provided. The studio is clean and inviting. Not only did the workout catch my eye after several classes, but the owner Melissa is extremely welcoming and knowledgeable to barre. It is a total body workout which includes brief stretching before transitioning to the next muscle group. I love how Sweat+Soul barre really targets the smaller muscles to help me feel strong and toned. I can attest that the workouts WILL stay challenging, even after working out here several times per week for years. Instead of getting "easier" with time, your form will slowly improve (which I think also helps to improve your posture!). If it's starting to feel easy, you're not properly engaging your muscles :) The teachers and the owner are all so friendly and know how to kick your ass in the best way. I also love how CLEAN it feels in the studio. Pretty much all other fitness studios I've tried out feel noticeably grosser compared to here. (I can understand that it's also probably due to the nature of the workout for other studios though.) The studio recently moved to Ward Village Center (Genki sushi, Kids City, etc.), on the side of the structure where Roger Dunn Golf is located. This new location doesn't have a water refill station yet, so be sure to fill up your flask before heading here.

After visiting my family in Thailand, I took private Pilates classes to improve my form and strengthen my body--because let's face it, I'm not getting any younger! When I returned home, I wanted to find a studio that offered quality instruction at an affordable price. After searching online, I stumbled across Firm Pilates, and I'm so glad I did. From my very first visit, Lauren was incredibly helpful. She guided me through the basics, making the class both enjoyable and educational. Now, I see her every week, and she continues to help me refine my form and build strength. Lauren is a great instructor--she not only makes the sessions fun but also focuses on targeting areas that need more improvement. She even provides tips and techniques I can practice at home, which has been a game changer. I still have a long way to go, but I can feel myself improving with each session. :)

Although I have now abandoned my effort to run the marathon, I have obtained enough L&L "frequent visitor" points to earn a free plate lunch!

Some classes fill up quickly and they have a waitlist. You form a line outside of their door and wait to enter when the instructor lets you in. Moani recognized that I was a new student and quickly helped me to grab weights, resistance bands, and ankle weights. There is ample equipment for everyone. The studio is very small and the provided mats were so close to each other. I ended up in the back row in a corner near the door. I only had 1/2 a mirror in front of me as there was some obstruction on the bottom. The class was very fast paced HIIT, with heavy and light weights, some cardio, and core. This class also used Red Light and Infrared Heat so you are constantly sweating. They require you to bring your own towel. The reps were intense and I had to stop several times to shake out my arms/legs. Most others looked like regulars and were able to keep up with the instructor. There are no modifications for different fitness abilities and no corrections on form. She does offer verbal motivation, great energy, and kept switching up the music to keep it fresh. At one point in the class, it was so hot that the emergency door was opened for a bit. There are very few, very quick breaks to take a sip of water. At the end, we were instructed to wipe down the equipment we used and rushed out as the next class was coming in late. Moani helped to swifer the floors. As a first timer, most exercises were pretty easy to follow along to. It's an exhilarating and challenging class. My dri-fits were soaked and my cheeks were flushed. The heat, intensity/pacing, and tight quarters made this a quite uncomfortable workout experience. The girls next to me have been going for a year and said it doesn't get any easier!

Normally a workout studio will have some instructors that provide harder workouts than others, but ALL of the instructors here know how to get you sweating & burning :) There is a $20 late cancellation fee, which is a bit steep, but it is within a reasonable time period and since space is very limited in the studio - the fee is understandable. It also helps to motivate you to make it to your workout and not make excuses! The monthly membership price is on par with other workout classes. Always believed that your health is the most important investment anyways. Only thing I would want are more class times so I could go more often.
