As someone who has never taken a Barre class before, I decided to go with the starter pack of three classes. I've tried pilates before but I actually think I prefer Barre. These Barre classes are more upbeat and are "fun". I actually look forward to the classes and I plan on buying a pack of classes once my "starter pack" runs out. Also, I definitely felt the effects of the workout both during and after the class. The muscle shakes are REAL!! I've been working out here for about 8-9 years now. I've tried many other fitness studios & types of workouts, but nothing so far can replace this for me. It is a total body workout which includes brief stretching before transitioning to the next muscle group. I love how Sweat+Soul barre really targets the smaller muscles to help me feel strong and toned. I can attest that the workouts WILL stay challenging, even after working out here several times per week for years. Instead of getting "easier" with time, your form will slowly improve (which I think also helps to improve your posture!). If it's starting to feel easy, you're not properly engaging your muscles :) The teachers and the owner are all so friendly and know how to kick your ass in the best way. I also love how CLEAN it feels in the studio. Pretty much all other fitness studios I've tried out feel noticeably grosser compared to here. (I can understand that it's also probably due to the nature of the workout for other studios though.) The studio recently moved to Ward Village Center (Genki sushi, Kids City, etc.), on the side of the structure where Roger Dunn Golf is located. I can't recommend Sweat + Soul enough. This barre class is essential for overall health and to build muscle and core strength. The instructors are very clear about important elements of the exercises, particularly keeping form. I love every instructor. They show that they care about you personally as you aim for your goals. I respect every one of them. My body composition is better after taking classes regularly -- more muscle tone and strength. I look great in jeans and halter tops, and if I keep this up, I'll be super woman well into my 90s! Located in Keahou Place, next to The Ultimate Foot Store and across of the new Down to Earth. The studio is brand spanking new, clean, and super nice! Water, towels, mats, all equipment needed for class are all available. Parking is located in the Keahou Place building and one hour validations are given on your way out of class. All instructors are awesome. I've taken classes from Melissa, Leanne, Rebecca, Mark, and Nicole. Although they all have very different personalities, the structure of the barre classes are very similar. By structure, I mean you will always be focusing on arms, legs, butt, and core. Each class I've experienced had different moves with different routines, so I can never get bored for sure. This review is long overdue, but I would give this place 10 stars if I could!! I took my first barre class ever here back in 2018 and I immediately fell in love with the studio and with barre! The workout: Barre is a challenging & technical practice, but it is so so so beneficial for your body! You focus on small targeted movements at a time that strengthen your total body & improve your posture/flexibility/balance. I used to do heavy-weight workouts at the gym, but gave that up to do barre. My body has never looked and FELT so good! The staff: Sweat + Soul is a local + female owned studio. The owner Melissa is so friendly and personable to all of her clients. She is also an amazing barre instructor! I also love the instructor Brandy, who leads upbeat classes and always pushes me to my edge in order to improve. The studio: Recently S+S opened a Kahala location and both that one and the Kakaako one are very clean and chic :) parking is easy and only $1 with validation cards at Kakaako and FREE at Kahala. The pricing: Barre classes here and anywhere will be more expensive than a gym membership, however I fully believe that the cost is worth the quality of instruction and practice that you will receive. I finally tried a barre class at Sweat + Soul this week. It was so fun!!! The class is an hour long and there is no time wasted jumping right in. The instructor had us doing all sorts of arm exercises with light weights. My arms were immediately noodles, but if the instructor is any indication of results, I'll keep going. I too want arms like that. Next we did a bunch of ballet like motions and extensions. My legs were shaking like crazy! The class wound down with abs, which of course were harder than expected. I wouldn't have believed that such small movements would be so tiring. The class finished with glute bridges, push-ups and a nice little stretch. The class was fun, a good workout, and didn't leave me so smoked I couldn't go finish my day. I'll definitely be back for more!! read more

HAPPY HOUR at the BARRE! Are you bored with your current workout routine? I was. Do you want to increase your core strength and improve your posture? I do. Do you want a flatter stomach and longer leaner muscles? Who wouldn't? Try a Barre class at Sweat and Soul. Sweat + Soul is a boutique studio specializing in Barre and yoga. I never took a yoga class here, so this review is only for the Barre classes. I bought the $40 for 2 weeks unlimited deal just to try it out. After my first class I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. After my second class I was still on the fence. Somewhere after the third class it kicked in and I ended up going to six barre classes in 12 days, to feel the full benefit of going to Barre classes regularly. 2015 is the year of the BARRE I would describe a Barre class as a mixture of yoga, Pilates, core strength isometric exercises, and ballet *inspired* leg and arm exercises (note the *inspired* part..because this is nothing like ballet). I've belonged to various gyms for over 20 years and have tried it all. I started my exercise fascination with the "20 minute workout" on TV (now how many of you remember THAT show??), hi impact, lo impact, step, kickboxing, cycle, Zumba, yoga, Pilates, strength training, boot camp...you name it, I've done it all. But I had never taken a Barre class before. I go to the gym a few times a week, which includes weight training, yoga, and some cardio. How hard could it be, right? WELL. Let me tell you. Apparently I was not training my core. My core was weak. I thought my legs were strong but they were SHAKING after some of the Barre leg raises. By eliminating the glute involvement, the quadriceps do all the work and I was dying during the fold over section. The elevated plie death squats (my official name for them, not theirs) causes tremendous amount of shaking each time. I love balls but when I have to squeeze the ball in-between my thigh while squatting on tip toe...it's KILLER. There is even one move where I felt like I was learning to TWERK! I am still a work in progress but now I'm more aware of where my hips, shoulders and ears are. I have to tell myself to pull my shoulders back and down, square my hips and tuck my tailbone in to stand in the correct position. It is easy to fall out of the correct posture/position and not work the muscle you're supposed to be working. This is where having a great instructor/trainer like Melissa comes in. She is the sweetest person but don't let that fool you. She kicks my ass. Every. Single. Time. She makes sure that I don't "cheat". Just when I think "omg I can't do another one", she says "okay just a little bit higher Lori! Squeeze it past my hand. Just 4 more!" and sometimes I look at her and think "uh no way". Today Melissa decided to make me into a "pretzel". No problem there until she said "ok now lift the back knee, and pulse". (ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?) I didn't even think it was possible to lift that back leg! With proper alignment and a strong core lock, it happened. Even though I don't sweat as much in a Barre class as I do in hot yoga, or classes like kickboxing, I definitely feel it the next day. I am sitting here typing because I can't really do much else since the rest of my body is sore. It's not all torture, though. The deep stretches are awesome, with the strap or bar assist. I feel longer, stronger, leaner, meaner(!), and my legs and butt have gotten a huge wake up call. This has helped me lift more weight at the gym, and has increased my flexibility in yoga, so these Barre classes are a great addition to my current workout routine. The price for monthly membership is a little bit much for me, and my schedule is erratic, so pay-per-class works better for me. I found a deal on Amazon Local this week: $45 for 5 classes or $80 for 10 classes, which is a HUGE STEAL. Go get it now. Now who wants to meet me at the BARRE? LOGISTICS Parking: Daytime--Street METER parking ($0.75/hr)--Pohukaina is 2hrs, Cooke St is 1hr only (so you can not park on Cooke, as you will be gone longer than an hour!). Free after 6pm. Do not leave your car over the time limit and put more quarters. I got a ticket on Pohukaina when I left my car there for 2.5hrs (I had put more quarters in the meter, but they marked my tires). There are some free spaces on the surrounding streets but I've never been able to find an open spot. Oh my goodness! What can I say, Sweat + Soul kicked my butt! I came here because my sister told me they were running a special. Deals?! What?! Of course I was interested. I bought a 10 class package and went for my first class last night. They are located near the new Down to Earth in Kakaako with validated parking, so that's a plus. I arrived a bit early because I knew there was a little bit of paper work to fill out. You need to have grippy socks, but never fear, if you've forgotten yours you can buy a pair there. The room is clean, you grab your yoga mat, weights and a towel and choose your spot. Our instructor was fantastic giving positive feedback to this non-bendy reviewer and offering help to adjust my position so that I was doing things correctly. The workout, complete with warm up and cool down is intense! At the end of class, you get a wipe, wipe down your equipment and put it away. They have lockers to store your valuables and a bathroom, but no showers. As challenging as this workout was (I'm already stiff and sore, but in a good way), I plan to be back in a couple of days to try the cardio barre class! read more

Even as an avid HIIT athlete, the 1 hour barre (beginner's) class still gave me something to sweat for. Sweat + Soul is at the epicenter of the revitalization of Kaka'ako. This is NOT a sissy workout that ballet dancers do. I am a straight guy who is married, a surfer, and a working professional and let me tell you, barre is a great workout for all genders, ages, and body types. Mark, who is one of the instructors, is a friend of mine and had suggested I come check it out. Given that I lived and worked in Kaka'ako, I figured I would take him up and check it out. Their former located was on Pohukaina Street, located across from the UFC Gym. Parking had always been a challenge competing with the UFC Gym and other users of businesses. Their new location in Keauhou Place is brand new and the vision of Melissa Rota, the owner. She is a former software engineer who took the plunge to share barre with others. Barre is a group exercise class, created by former ballet dancer Lotte Berk in London in 1959. She brought it back to the U.S. and operated Lotte Berk Method studio in New York City in 1971, where it operated until 2005. Instructors from the studio went on to found some of the major chains providing barre classes, including Physique 57, The Bar Method,and Exhale Spa. Melissa and her instructors are protege's of Exhale Spa and use their method. It is a combination of Pilates and yoga with lots of isometric exercises using small weights. At Sweat + Soul, all you need is a set of grippy socks....everything else you need is provided, including a towel. While the workouts follow the same format, warm-up, weights, glutes, stretching, cool down, they are always different. All the instructors have their own style but are all encouraging and provide individual attention and support. Trust me, you will never look at 6 lbs weight again when you feel like your arm is going to fall off. It has resulted in me having a stronger core and back, while also having lean muscles. As I am now in my 30's I don't really care about being bulky, I want to have lean muscles that allow me to function while in my sedentary office job while also allowing me to get in the water to surf, walk my dog, and do home projects, barre has helped me achieve this! I have been waiting and waiting for this adorable studio to open up in Kaka'ako and the day has finally come! I spied Sweat + Soul when I took at class at the Hang Out next door and three months later the doors opened for barre and yoga classes. I had signed up for their email list and got an invite for their free weekend of Grand Opening classes. Yes, oh yes! I wanted to try their barre class but was only able to fit in their candlelight Yin yoga. I always believe that the Universe always delivers exactly what you need and a relaxing hour of yoga was just what my body was yearning for. Located across from the BJ Penn UFC gym, Sweat & Soul is hidden on the second floor. When you walk in there's an assortment of yoga gear for sale and a check-in area. The studio itself is tiny but it was a great place for our candlelit yoga session. I'm not a candle person but the Yin yoga class has totally changed my mind! I practice hot yoga about 3-4 times a week but the addition of candles created the most relaxing environment. The class was interesting because I've never taken a Yin yoga class and we held each pose for much longer than regular yoga. I'm consider myself to be very flexible but found certain poses very intense because of the length of the hold. At the end of class our instructor talked to each guest to get feedback which I thought was great! I was lucky enough to meet Melissa (the owner) afterwards and she was such a lovely person. Sweat+Soul is an adorable studio located across from UFC gym on Pohukaina Street. The studio is incredibly clean and has brand new equipment. They offer two types of classes here: Barre, a ballet-inspired workout, and Yin Yoga. The brand new fitness studio is run by Melissa, who also teaches many of the Barre classes. Most people come in thinking the studio is so cute and charming, that the classes must be a light aerobic workout to match the atmosphere (I am one of those unfortunate people). A word of caution: Do not be fooled by the soothing music and friendly instructors, the classes are NOT EASY. Your legs, glutes and abs come here...to die. Barre is an amazing workout that strengthens your entire body, with emphasis on your lower half. From variations of ballet stances to pushups to incredibly intense ab workouts, Barre heavily focuses on small-muscle, isometric movements to build up strength and endurance. Melissa and the gang are very friendly and helpful. They will walk around during class to correct your form or push you to hold a little longer. And they learned my name so quickly! A difficult feat for many people! They are very open to questions and feedback and take the time to explain what they do before and after a session. A few helpful suggestions for your first session: 1) Bring a pair of socks with grips (or you can buy a cute pair for $10 at the studio) If you forget to bring this, you'll slide around and have trouble performing the holds. 2) Bring water. You might not be moving around a lot, but the burn will leave you thirsting for some hydration. 3) Only street parking is available. You can park for free after 5:30pm on weekdays. Overall, a really positive experience. I would recommend this studio for anyone. The classes seem to draw primarily women, but I think the classes are also a great opportunity for men to develop their lower body and improve their flexibility. I've been coming here every morning for the past 4-5 months, and I've seen my body change so much! I've always been an active person, and besides my typical activities, such as soccer and running, I've never been able to keep interest in anything else. I've tried the gym, but never found the motivation to go, so I ended up canceling my membership. I've tried zumba, and as much as it was fun, I didn't feel I was making any progress in my weight and body, so I quit going. I've tried workout videos, but lost interest quickly. Their encouragement and assistance in making me better is one of the reasons why I find myself committed to attending class everyday! Love it! I've never heard of barre until I attended this yelp event. Since then.....it is my FAVORITE workout to do!!!!!!!!! The studio is located right across the UFC Honolulu gym... There's lots of metered parking around and it's located upstairs in this clean, quiet studio. Melissa and the girls are awesome! I always feel so welcomed when I walk in. I've been to a few of Melissa's classes. She has this soothing voice that keeps you motivated to push through the pain. (Good pain of course) As much as it hurts so good and my legs are shaking uncontrollably, Melissa makes every move worthwhile. Barre..... Is like ballet, Pilates and yoga put together without the dancing. It's a low impact workout that makes you sweat sweat sweat. Every time I come to barre, I can really feel my muscles engaging. If you come to barre thinking it's just an easy class that's all stretches, I'm afraid you'd be in over your head! I was very excited to be introduced to Sweat and Soul through a Yelp Kicks Butt event! Well, I was so smitten (and so sore the next day), that I just had to come again! In fact, I've been going 3 times a week for two weeks! ;D Barre is a low impact class, in that you aren't running around and jumping up and down like a maniac (not that I don't enjoy that from time to time), but I guarantee you will feel that burn in your muscles that you yearn for to tell you how great of a workout you got! It isolates muscle groups and with various small movements and light weight, works them to fatigue. I swear I shake from the thigh exercises every single time! All of my weaknesses, this class focuses on- training my core, strengthening my upper body, and toning me from head to toe! It is a very challenging class, but they offer modifications to make it easier or harder depending on where you are at. The teachers are very aware of each individual, and will help you with positioning and encourage you to do your best! Every time I leave I feel energized and stronger, and I love it! The phrase "I'm going to barre this week!" yields me interesting looks from my friends who think I'm going drinking at a bar. I've always wanted to take a barre class and took the opportunity with Sweat and Soul's 2 for 1 guest pack. I took the barre and barre cardio class on two separate occasions and needless to say, it was so intense! It was a full body workout that worked muscles I didn't even know existed. Class is fast-paced so you're constantly moving. The hour goes by very quickly. It's repetition of small movements, but you definitely feel your muscles working, burning, and quivering. As someone who rarely works out, I was so relieved that I survived albeit much struggle. Without a doubt, it's a really great workout. The instructors I had (Leanne and Nicole) were very supportive and motivating. I really appreciate that they correct your form and keep encouraging you throughout the class. Went to a yelp event for a barre class. The studio is in the heart of Kaka'ako. We were fortunate to find street parking but I believe parking is available in the bldg because I heard them ask if people needed validation. The studio is nice, clean with lockers to use for free and no need to bring your own lock. The class itself was great. I literally have nothing negative to say about this place. My friend first invited me to try barre classes for the first time sometime last year. Since then, we've made it a habit (or at least are attempting to) to come once a week. So far, we have been to classes taught by about three different instructors. We've found that each instructor, obviously, has a different teaching style/personality and may focus slightly more on a different part of the barre experience--but you honestly can't go wrong with anyone because you're 100% guaranteed to get the workout you signed up for. Ha! The atmosphere of every class is always positive and encouraging. Really, nobody cares how you look or at what "level" you are. It doesn't matter what gender you are, either, because you'll find a way to be challenged no matter what. You can start with a Basic Barre class, or try for regular Barre or Barre Advanced (but for the latter, you're required to previously have taken a certain number of Barre classes). You can also try Cardio class if you want to mix it up. Every instructor will also describe options to intensify certain moves during any class. By the way, I believe this is currently the only independent barre studio in Hawaii. I love that about Sweat + Soul, because the instructors know us by name the moment we walk in. They walk around during class to ensure we are engaging the targeted muscles rather than flailing around. In fact, Melissa noticed how much better our form had gotten a few months into our classes, compared to our first few classes. :) The bottom line is, I am learning so much more than just what the barre movements look like--I'm also gaining a better understanding of why we do them, and how to ensure I'm doing them correctly and safely. Learning the foundation of these exercises is so much more important than just learning how to do them, so I'm grateful that it's emphasized here. Barre has become the perfect strength/stretching/everything workout for me that I didn't know I needed until I tried. I think I'll be coming here for as long and often as I can. Ooooookay... let me first start of by saying that I had NO idea what this class was about. Ballet? Dance? Yoga? mixtures? I had no idea what to expect. I am very active. I run 5-8 miles 3x per week and I work out with a trainer 2x per week for weightlifting. I am always having issues with tight hips, quads and hamstrings. My physical therapist recommended this class instead of yoga classes. I reviewed the YELP reviews and chose Sweat and Soul to try out. Here's how my first experience went.... 1) Signed up online and got 2 classes for the price of 1. 2) Used their online class schedule to book my slot for the next morning. 3) They are located across the street from BJPenn so if you know the area, street parking is very tight and cars are always being towed. However, I read the reviews and it said metered parking 1 block up. Sure enough, super easy metered parking, was 75 cents for 1 hour, I put enough in for 1.5 hours. Coins only-quarters, dimes and nickles. 4) Walked the short block to their facility, up the stairs and arrived at a very cute, clean, modern studio. 5) Melissa (geez, I hope that is her name) was at the counter and helped me get set up. I filled out a short form and purchased my $12 pair of socks with stickies on the bottom. You don't have to buy their socks, you can use your own but I didn't have the type that has the sticky dots on the bottom. 6) They have an area for you to put your purse, bag or whatever else you bring. It is IN the studio you will be so make sure you phone is on airplane mode. 7) She told me to grab a strap, ball and 2 sets of small weights. 3lb and 1lb. Which I thought would be WAY too easy since I work out all the time. (boy was I wrong) 8) Class size at 10AM was 6 women. 9) Class started right on time and moved very quickly. She speaks through her mic on her headset and each movement goes right into the next. I could follow along fairly well but can see how some may feel a little lost. 10) It is hard to explain what the class really is. Yoga? no. Pilates? not sure I have never taken that class. Strength training? sort of. All I have to say is I was sweating and my lower body was shaking! Those tiny baby weights were feeling very heavy by the time the class ended! There is no "jumping" around, no hard core cardio type moves, no loud grunting or strenuous movements. Very calm, focused movements with a watchful and helpful teacher. I can see why my physical therapist recommended this. It is all about strengthening your core and tiny stabilizer muscles to have a strong foundation to build on. I do plan on committing to at least 1 month, twice a week, to see how things go. Great company, happy with my first visit for sure! read more

This review is long over due. I've always wanted to try a Barre class, and at one fitness expo last year, saw Sweat and Soul's booth and picked up one of their promo flyers. That was the first time I met Melissa and I had no idea she was the owner! Fast forward a few months later, I finally made it to one of their Barre classes and was so glad I did. The classes are intense, even if you're already in pretty good shape. The best thing about the place though are the ladies! They are so awesome and encouraging, it's uplifting going to their classes and you feel very empowered after. The only bad thing is that I've since moved to Korea for work, but when I'm back in Honolulu I make it a point to make it to their class. And they always remember my name, I'm always impressed. If that's not good customer service for you I don't know what is. Check them out it's worth it! My abs have never been in such good shape before I tried their workout! Cheers!! read more

Feeeeel the burn! That's exactly what you'll be feeling after every session. Everything hurt. Muscles I didn't even know I had, hurt but hurts so good!!! Love the fact that it uses mostly body weight and resistance to work you out. You will use some small weights and the barre but it's mainly small movements done w your own body weight. The workout is a combo of core targeting exercises, ballet, yoga, pilates, and small, repetitive movements. I love the fact that it really targets your bum bum because I have such a hard time getting a good bum bum workout! Seems like nothing I do will get it to burn but mine feels firm, tight, and sore after every session here. These workouts are suppose to make you build long, lean muscles and I'm built like a mini football player so hoping this is true. Melissa is awesome and her voice is so soothing. I dunno how she works out w her class w a mic on and does it for multiple classes. O_o she is attentive and corrects your positioning during class and is sooo nice! The rest of the staff is super sweet as well. I already have a gym membership but after my first class I knew, this class was gonna be a regular part of my routine so it was a no brainer I was gonna purchase the monthly pass here as well. Get the monthly pass, it's totally worth it and watch yourself turn into a lean, mean, muscle machine. read more

I had been wanting to try barre fitness for some time so I jumped at the opportunity when I saw a Groupon for Sweat + Soul about a year ago. My normal workout routine consists mostly of Bodypump (full-body weight lifting) classes at 24h, which left me tight all the time. I've tried yoga to help me stretch out but it just bore me to death!! Barre classes combines yoga, Pilates, a dancers' leg work out, and some arm work with light free weights. After taking just 5 classes in a month, I noticed I was less tight and so much more flexible...even better, I left every class feeling like I got an awesome workout! The girls who teach these barre classes are really so sweet, they really made an effort to remember my name, welcome me into their intimate classes, and helped this newbie on learning good form. The studio was very clean and this place had an overall good vibe. The only reason why I decided not to continue coming here was that it's far for me as I live in Ewa and work in Kailua, I was killing myself trying to juggle my schedule to accommodate barre. I've tried the new booty barre classes at 24 Kapolei but it's weak sauce compared to Sweat + Soul and the instructors don't help on form at all, which I feel is so important for an effective workout. Please open a spot in Kapolei or something on the westside so I can start up barre again! read more

Oh. My. Body. This probably was not the best choice in exercise, as I am 2 months post-baby, and i have not done any type of physical activity for the entire 9 months (& then some) of my pregnancy. But holy cow. THE BEST workout i've had. I'm talking aching body as I leave the class best workout. We took the regular barre class on a saturday morning from Melissa. She could tell we were *newbies* as she quickly approached us to introduce herself and help us gather the things we needed. As everyone started walking in, she greeted pretty much everyone by name, and helped make room for all. The class size itself was about maybe (give or take a few) 14 of us, but there was plenty room to get our exercise done comfortably. this was my second class, and i love how the teachers walk around as you're dying.. i mean.. exercising, and help with your positioning & posture. I am totally not a Yogi or ballerina or anything remotely close to being coordinated/flexible, so Melissa helping me to make sure my muscles get its peak soreness, was incredibly helpful! after class, they provide sanitizing wipes to wipe down your mat and weights which was great! I mean, no one wants to use a mat that had puddles of sweat from another gal, right?! eww. the thought just grosses me out. They are located in the Keauhou building, right by Down to Earth. Super easy to find, as the parking entrance is right on Pohukaina. They validate for the hour, but you'll probably end up paying a dollar, since the class is an hour and you'll need time to put your keys and such away in the locker, walk to and from the car, etc. The waiting area is cute and clean- very welcoming. they have a small counter of barre socks and the usual exercise "essentials". They have a few seats/couches for you to sit and wait for your class to begin. This new location now has lockers, big and small, to hold your stuff! They have two single stall bathrooms and a water fountain. So if youre looking for a good, INTENSE, sore-for-the-next-few-days workout, come here. the staff is extremely sweet, the instructors are incredible & uplifting (meaning i never got the feeling like they were thinking of me as a flabby, never-worked-out-in-months, little weakling), and the post work-out feeling is ahhhmazinnnng! read more

Sweat + soul has completely transformed my body and my life. Next month, I will make two years of consistently coming here 3-5x a week. For those who are unfamiliar with barre, barre is an amazing full-body workout that encompasses some elements of ballet, pilates, and yoga. It uses isometric movements to transform your body into a lean, toned physique. Probably one of the hardest, most kick-ass workouts I have ever encountered in my life. I love all of the instructors here, especially Melissa (owner) who is so incredibly sweet, helpful and caring. The instructors here are so talented and really pay attention to safety and your form. I met one of my best friends from attending classes. This studio has become family to me. I look forward to coming here for the years to come! read more

***PARKING*** There is no parking. You will have to find near by street parking. Sometimes, depending on the day and time, street parking can be hard to find - you may end up parking as far over as WARD. ***FACILITY*** Located across the street from the UFC Gym in Kaka'ako, they are upstairs. There is just something comfortable about this studio. Minimalist. Clean. Calming grey and natural wood tones. Love. ***TEACHERS*** I have taken classes from various instructors and they are all really wonderful. Kind, enthusiastic, upbeat, positive and encouraging. High energy, and ensure the time to go around to each student and make sure you are getting it right, no matter how big or small the class may be. ***THE WORKOUT*** Surprisingly, for the little tiny weights you use in the class, and the limited equipment as well, you really do get an incredible full body, low intensity workout. The small repetitive movements really get a good sweat going and can be as little or as intense as you make them. ***CUSTOMER SERVICE*** The owner & staff are always so helpful, when either calling by phone, responding to emails etc. I have absolutely no complaints. They will work with you and have so many great deals to help you get the classes you want. The schedule has so many time options all week, through such a wide range of times. Classes are super easy to book with the mindbody app as well, or call or walk-in a little early to ensure a space in your fave class. ***Suggestions for the owner/room for improvement*** I really enjoyed my dozen or so classes at Sweat + Soul for the facility and teachers, but not sure how often I will return. To be honest, I've had a good share of plantar fasciitis and knee issues (patella rubbing and grinding on other leg bones...), so not only are these classes challenging for me, but can often boarder on painful a day or two later. I would probably return more often if they had continued another replacement yoga class (they used to have an awesome yin yoga class) or some other workshops or stretching. My only other gripe is the lack of buildable/measurable improvement ... and that is why I'm not a 'gym rat'. I like classes I can have a measureable improvement in myself... like yoga, even if so small, or that you can build upon your skills you learn like in aerial silks... I hope they come up with more classes. Really do love this place and the people there. read more

Ever wonder why ballerinas have such toned bodies? Just attend a barre class and you'll quickly find out. To preface my review, here are a few things about barre in general that are good to know: Number One - Every day is leg day at barre, Two - You will shake during class from the intensity of the exercises and Three - You will be told to EMBRACE the shake. I discovered Sweat + Soul from a Yelp Kicks Butt event back in 2015. They're located in Kaka'ako right across the BJ Penn UFC gym and right next door to The Hang Out (aerial yoga). They have a really tiny space that's easy to miss but if you look up at the really colorful building across the gym, you'll spot them on the 2nd floor. There's a staircase to the left that will lead you right to Sweat + Soul's door. Their lobby and retail area is really spacious and they have a table and some racks for merchandise (grip socks, tank tops, water bottles, etc.) Right outside of the actual studio, there's a shelf for your belongings and some clean towels for the class. The actual studio is pretty tiny and very clean, probably the cleanest workout space I've ever seen in a workout facility. There are additional shelves in the back of the studio for belongings and that back corner also houses the weights, straps, workout balls, mats and disinfectant wipes. The walls are lined with, you guessed it - the barre. Sweat + Soul offers a few different classes (Barre, Cardio and Barre, and Yin Yoga) and their schedule is conveniently posted on their website. Classes begin with a warm up and then a mix of whoop ass is quickly thrown your way and your muscles are definitely worked. I mean, you'll work muscles you never even knew you had. A typical workout is as follows: warm up, arms (with light weights), push ups, legs and glutes (on the barre), core and stretching. You pretty much get a full body workout with every session and the nice surprise for me is that I find out I worked parts of my body without even knowing. Sounds crazy but parts of my body end up aching and I don't remember even working on those particular areas of my body. Yin Yoga is not as intense as barre and the class is much slower but is really helpful because of all the stretching. The poses target tissues, joints and bones that aren't normally exercised. Their entire staff is awesome. All of the lovely ladies are warm and friendly. During class, the instructors are nothing but encouraging and keep an eye out to make sure we're in correct form and also provide modifications to either decrease the intensity or kick it up to make the workout even more intense. Not to mention, their playlists are pretty sweet and help to keep the energy up in the room. There are a bunch of different class times to choose from throughout the day so it's pretty easy to find a class that will fit into your schedule. Your body may hate you during class but when you begin to see and feel the results a few classes later, your body will definitely thank you. read more

This was my first time experience with Barre class and it was wonderful. The instructors are excellent and really know how to push you to get the max benefit. The time flies by and the next day your muscles will feel the effects, in a good way. This is a great workout! This was admittedly the first time I had tried barre and I LOVED IT! Even before trying them out during their grand opening, I was thrilled with the concept. A yoga studio and a barre studio in one- toning and relaxation! The spot is located next to The Hang Out and in a colorful, painted building across from the UFC gym. (Ummm, can you talk about an awesome pairing- the Hang Out, UFC gym and Sweat and Soul?! Maybe one day they will do a joint membership!) Parking is all street parking which is probably problematic for some of the class times. I went to two of their free classes during their grand opening weekend and I was impressed with both. I did 7:30 am barre- a great strengthening workout for the early morning! My favorite part of it is that it had an engaging and upbeat music soundtrack and integrated classical dance moves. Having done ballet as a kid, it was cool to remember those moves! I also did Yin yoga, which is a type of relaxing (yet challenging!) yoga that increases blood flow to your deep tissue and rids your body of toxins. You hold the poses for about three minutes each. This was more of a workout then you might think and I really enjoyed the sensation of new blood flowing throughout my entire body. In addition, the candles made the session beautiful and even more relaxing. Sweat + Soul is a clean space- completely new and clean. They have water, towels, mats, blocks, cleaning wipes for your mat, etc- all for free. They also have a store with workout clothing and accessories- currently, you get a percentage off with your yelp check-in! Although the membership is pricey- about $120/month, I definitely want to come back. read more

I just popped in for a morning class and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. The studio is really nice, thicker mats than I'm used to, which was better for my elbows. I've been dragged into doing my first half marathon, I blame my triathlete bf. Some days are great and I love it, some days are hard and I question myself why Im running, some days are painful and sore and all I want to do is lay down. But I'm determined to not walk during the half marathon and do as much as I can to do to cross train which is where Barre comes in. I found a living social deal for $50 for 5 classes so my sister and a friend and I all signed up. The first class was hard. My abbs and ribs were sore and It almost hurt to breathe. But it hurt so good. If you know what it feels like for your body to shake while working out, that's the norm in this studio. But don't let that hold you back, when you look at the instructors lean toned bodies it will be inspiration enough to keep going. The instructors are awesome! Ritchie and Lianne are passionate about barre and it's easy to see during their classes. And even though they are fixing my positioning more often then not, they have this kind way of doing it so you don't feel singled out. Although you'll see pictures of ballet bars on the website, those are only used to do exercises. You don't have to be a ballerina. I'm definitely far from it. I've only done 3 classes so far but I'm definitely hooked. Hopefully my butt, legs, abbs will thank me soon enough. :) read more

I have this thing called arm envy, where I get incredibly jealous of females with perfectly toned arms. 2 years ago I told everyone and their moms that I wanted Michelle Obama arms. I even told my boss about my arm envy and my boss stated "you want her arms?" And in my head I screamed "umm, have you not seen her guns?! They look fantastic!" Fast forward two years and my arm is still shapeless... and if I was to describe them to you my arms are pretty much cankles glued to my hands. Depressing? I know... After finishing my half marathon last month, I decided to put my foot down and stop crying over my arms and do something about it. I heard about barre and thought it would be the perfect solution. I looked up Sweat + Soul, read their reviews, and decided to take a class. The studio is beautiful and exceptionally clean. They have towels, mats, and other equipments for you to use. You can use your own socks but I would highly recommend purchasing a barre sock since it grippy and won't have you sliding everywhere, The classes are a hour and it's extremely fast paced. If you love workouts like yoga sculpt and body pump, you'll love barre. Same intensity and energy but totally different workout. If you have read other reviews prior to mines, you may have come across people talking about "shaking" during the workouts. Shaking is real!!! One time, I shook so much during a certain thigh exercise I thought I would going to topple over and bring the girl in front of me down too. I have taken classes with Richie and Melissa and they are both excellent. They're incredibly friendly and their music choice for the workouts are great. Parking isn't difficult at all. I have never had a hard time finding a stall in the area after work (around 5:30PM) and even on the weekends. After taking some of these classes I have a feeling I am on my way to achieving those beautiful toned arms like Michelle Obama's.. I mean they can't be cankle-ish forever right?!?!?!?! read more
