    Equipment for each classic class
    Jessica K.

I won a free month of Pure Barre from Fit fest and was admittedly resistant. My first real exposure was from Fit Fest and that class was a bit chaotic because of the sheer size of the class and logistics. But I decided I was going to give it a shot and not let that class give me the true flavor since I had the opportunity to do a month of classes. So now here I am half way through the month and I am sold. The first few classes are a little intimidating since there is a sense of community there and everyone seems to know what they are doing, but now I have gotten the hang* of it. Note the asterisk...that does not mean I am a master of the moves by any means, it means I understand what is going to be coming. Even the fitting of people (like people who are also teaching some classes) are shaking and showing that it is not easy. It is completely scale able from those of us just (re)starting our fitness journey to those who are in killer shape. They offer a free week of classes to everyone, so I personally would recommend to try the week, do a classic class 3-4 times and you will get a good flavor...I'm digging it.

I am a runner so I am fairly fit but like most runners, I need to gain strength in my glutes and core if I want to continue to run.

I found them because I asked a friend who loves dance where the best place was for beginner level hip hop and then grabbed an unlimited membership during a deal. Best choice I've made for my health in 2019. Straightline is a great place to meet new friends, and I do exactly that almost every single time I attend a class. Every class I take is challenging but modifiable. The variety is great. Even though I came for hip hop, I love 305 Fitness (think cardio clubbing), yoga, piloxing (pilates and boxing!!!!!), pilates and barre, YOU NAME IT. The app to sign up the classes is super easy to navigate and gives you an option to add the appointment to your calendar when you sign up. Love that. The studio is also very active on social media and responds to any questions in a timely manner. I am here at least 3 times a week and tell anyone I can how great it is. Join their email list to be in the know for their events and special offerings - worth it even without a 'deal!' This community gives me something to look forward to throughout the day when normally in the winter I'd stay home, holed up in the dark. I'm not saying Straightline is curing my seasonal depression (hello Minnesota winter) but it certainly helps!! The two things that I'd change: the bathrooms are downstairs and there's nowhere to shower after a sweaty class. Literally the only two downfalls of this studio. If you're still reading this review, CHECK THEM OUT! I can't recommend Straightline Dance Fitness enough.

During class, they also dole out individual attention and take the time to be encouraging with a gentle nudge toward better form or a compliment. I enjoy the mix of barre, yoga and HIIT classes. Last week, they had iced tea for free in the little sit down area after class. Nice touch. They've been doing this for years I think. You really improve with flexibility with the heat, and that is great if you aren't hyper mobile, which I. am. not. (Thankfully!) MOV does a great job making sure everything is clean and there is no mold smell anywhere in the building, etc! I unfortunately will not join up again because it is too far from my home, and I wheeze and get a headache when around moldy smells from some men's mats or clothes (Sorry men, it is never women!... yet). Then they (some, not all men) cover the moldy smell with some good and smelly detergent or fabric softener, making me wheeze from the chemicals. Just so you know, I love men, but their system is less sensitive to mold, and well, then they don't know they smell (or they think they covered it up, dang less sensitive to mold men!). :( My last free class I had to move, and pissed off an angry yogi. C'est la vie, get over it, and I gotta do what I gotta do. I only slid my mat back to an open spot to get away from the smell, and breathe! Said thank you and sorry and got a dirty look. She had space to move from me as she wanted space on both sides of her, I guess. Hey, I got a free smoothie on my birthday too! Very generous of them! And Dave gave me a copy of his book! Thanks so much Mov and Dave! I hope you are around for a good long while. If my system gets stronger, I'll probably join sometime, at least for a month like January!

A couple of places charge $20-22 per class and that's with a package. So, yes, please! TimeOut's barre classes are called "Behind Bars". I've only had Madeline so far. I find her a very effective fitness instructor. Even though the classes have 20-30 students, she scans the room and offers up corrections and modifications. This impresses me. I also liked the fact that there seemed to be a wide variety of ages in my barre classes rather than a bunch of 20 something year olds clad in Lululemon with fake tans unlike a certain yoga chain that I will not mention by name. I would recommend signing up for class online. Also, you get a "no show" charge if you sign up for a class but don't show up but this is pretty common with barre classes. I haven't taken the other classes yet, but I might take a pilates one to switch things up. The studio itself is also very, very nice. There are dressing rooms, hot towels, and tea. Reception area people are nice also! So, you have to sign up for an orientation which at first I was kind of bummed out. But, when I went to the orientation, I found it really helpful and the instructor seemed knowledgeable and interested in everyone. Orientation is only about 15-20 minutes so not really a biggie. I would recommend trying to fit your orientation in before a class you want to attend. I've also not had parking issues at this place either but I usually take the first class of the day.
