When we decided to adopt for a second time, we were looking for a different experience from our first adoption. We had previously adopted through a high-volume California attorney. The process was impersonal and they disappeared during weekend of our son's adoption. We were so fortunate to be introduced to Katie Zimmerman at Purl when we set out to adopt again, and I can only hope that every prospective adoptive parent is able to do the same. Katie and all of the people who make up Purl are adoption advisors. Many of them are adoptive parents or adoptees, and everyone there has a personal connection to making the adoption process transparent to all members of the adoption triad. I don't say "easy" because anyone involved with adoption quickly learns that the process is difficult, long, challenging, scary, traumatic, uncertain, fraught with tricky emotional landmines.... But when entered into with open eyes can be a beautiful way to create a family. What drew us to Katie and Purl was our first meeting with her. She let us know she would be honest and direct and not just tell us what we wanted to hear. Signing up with her would give us access to a network of adoption professionals across the country that she personally maintained, and she would help us with a strategy of how to present ourselves to the agencies and attorneys that would most likely to connect us with a potential birth mother. She also had monthly educational zoom calls that featured birth mothers, adoptive parents, and all kinds of professionals that could speak to many aspects of the adoption process, from how to feed your newborn to how to research substance abuse, to how to navigate adoption related tax credits. We quickly saw all that Purl had to offer in action as we got our profiles out to adoption agencies and attorneys across the country and participated in several of her zoom calls. One call in particular about how adoption agencies work even helped me to understand some of the frustrating dynamics that happened in our first adoption and let go of some negative feelings. Our second adoption did not come quickly. We had some preferences and concerns that were keeping us from being shown to a wider range of birth mothers. Katie continually and gently encouraged us to reconsider what was underlying our fears. She did this supported by education she had collected and by advising us to consider some of the medical professionals in her network as well as our own doctors. We never felt pressured, but we did get honest feedback about how likely we would be to adopt on our timeline unless we challenged some of our perceptions. When we were finally matched for a second adoption Katie and Purl immediately connected us with a fantastic attorney to handle our side of the adoption. There were some complicated emotional and legal questions during the month that the adoption took place and Katie was one text or phone call away every step of the way. If she didn't have an answer for us, she immediately directed us to someone who did. Purl's approach does not just extend to the adoptive parents. As I mentioned before Purl is concerned with the entire adoption triad. Katie and other members of Purl provide education and their own experience about how an adoption can best serve the birth parents and the adoptee, and to underscore that the connections between all involved will be life-long, no matter what level of openness is chosen. They are honest that these relationships may be messy or difficult, but also have the potential to be beautiful and positive if the feelings of all involved can be valued. If all of this just sounds like me heaping praise, the point I would like to make is that Katie and Purl are outliers. There are many amazing people working in the adoption world on different parts of the process, but to my knowledge hardly anyone else who has detailed knowledge, experience, education and strong feelings about the process as a whole, and is as committed to making the process better for everyone. There are not enough wonderful things we could say about Katie at the Purl Adoption Advisory. We came to her after being on a wait list with an agency for nearly 6 months longer than we were originally told we would, and we were frustrated. Our overall adoption budget was less than most, and we had contacted several well known, larger consulting companies who all said they could not work within our budget. Then we found Katie, and we are SO glad we did! Katie specializes in lower cost, ethical adoptions, and she means it. She cares deeply about adoption as an adoptive mom herself. She gave us so much information at every step that we would have really never known or understood had we not chosen to work with her. Within 2 months we were "matched" with a baby born several days later. She called us in the middle of the night to let us know he was born. When the match sadly disrupted for a very rare reason, Katie sat on the phone with me while I sobbed and sobbed.
