Can't say enough great things about the summer camp and the focus on developing wrestlers, and as important good people and teammates. There are discussions about the mental side of wrestling- often forgotten about, how techniques can conquer all, nutrition and weights/cardio, and the honest truth that wrestling is hard and a grind and is not for everyone- you, the wrestler, need to want it - it is not the coach or the parent (although they are important to support the wrestler). If I could give this place ZERO stars I would. I had to fly my son home early from this nasty, dirty camp because he was absolutely covered in a rash all over his entire body. The coaches kept advising him to keep wrestling and told him it wasn't a big deal. Thank goodness he was more of an adult and knew it was not ok. The night he arrived home, I immediately brought him to the ER. He was diagnosed with staph, hand/foot/mouth and shingles! He has scars on his arms that he now has to live with for the rest of his life because of the irresponsible "adults" and "coaches" at this camp! GROSS! Do not ever send your child to this camp!!! My son flew out from the Philadelphia area to do his first sleep away camp at Purler and he had a great time. He is only 9 so one of the younger kids in the session and had pretty bad homesickness the first day but the coaches helped him through and he really enjoyed himself and feels like he learned a lot! What an experience it was. Top notch camp with top notch facility. This was our first time to attend a camp. My son wanted to try it out before he commited to a much longer camp this summer. After leaving today he was already trying to figure out when we could come back before the summer. Had a wide variety of high quality partners. This is a huge plus, as you can go to some places and have no one to drill with. I would recommend it to anyone who's son or daughter wrestles. I was very disappointed in the Purler Take Down Machine Wrestling Camp; I had very high hopes, and expected much more based on my research. The campers are housed in bunkhouses, there are about 25 campers in a bunkhouse, but there were only two toilets and two showers in each house and the restroom area is very dirty. Upon arrival we found the restroom to be in very poor condition, the conditions would only get worse as the week progressed. When I say they were bad, I mean bad! My sons are 10 and 12 years old, they were placed in the bunkhouse that had the older campers, aged 15-17, not with the kids in their age group. The bunkhouse for their age group was oversold and out of space so the only option was with the older crew. The conditions were bad enough and I was uncomfortable with them being in the older house so I decided to have them stay at a hotel and I brought the boys to camp each morning and picked them up each evening. They did use their bunk during the day, spending time there between sessions. During this time there was ample cussing, nudity, the use of the N word, and other horse play (including possible porn on computers) that they were exposed to, I can't image the nonsense that occurred after dark. I was sold on the idea that there were many coaches and fewer campers, allowing for a lot of personal attention. This was not the case at all, typically there was a single coach during the 6pm live wrestling portion, and this single coach was tasked with supervising the entire 50 campers in the room. I saw two injuries, some bullying, my 12 year old 6th grader was paired with 10th and 11th graders that outweighed him by 20 pounds in addition to being 5-6 years older than him as well, an injury waiting to happen! We are avid wrestlers, we have done Ken Chertow camps on multiple occasions (a very solid camp with great supervision and many instructors), and tomorrow we head to the Naval Academy for another 5-day camp as well. We are not shrinking violets, this is wrestling, and it is hard, we know and accept this premise. I found the Purler Take Down Machine camp to be very dirty, unsupervised, lacking in leadership, a 6th grader should not be paired with an 11th grader, for example. There should not be sex videos, the use of the N word, nudity, etc., in any bunkhouse, at any camp ... let alone one that has a 10-year as a resident (and this is just during the day since my kids left each night). We did not get our monies worth from the Purler Take Down Machine, it was a big disappointment: we will not be coming back, I think there are other, far better camps available. I hate to be negative, these are our experiences, we had high hopes, great expectations, and we left feeling very disappointed with the overall quality of the camp. read more

I would recommend Purler camps to anyone who wants to improve their wrestling. My son has been attending Purler camps for 2 years and has never had a bad thing to say about these camps. You can definitely tell a difference in his wrestling after attending these camps. Not only has his wrestling improved, but his confidence has also increased, which is priceless. My boys have been attending Purler for several years now. What started as something to do in the off season has progressed as the boys have grown and become more serious wrestlers. Watching their love of the sport and their skills increase every year has been worth the time and money spent with Purler Wrestling. They have moved from PWA, to Elite, and now my oldest is in the WCWP. The interaction the boys have had with the coaches from the beginning to present has been amazing. His teaching is great and his rooms are always under control. It is a great environment for new and experienced wrestlers. I was very disappointed by my experience at purler wrestling camp. I have gotten absolutely nothing out of the consistently boring 2 hour practices. Coaches somehow managed to teach the same lesson plan 6 times with out noticing. It was to my up most disappointment that Nick Purler, the head coach, failed to teach or even show up to a practice for more than 30 minutes at a time, except when he showed at the end when parents where filming watching where he acted like he was teaching and coaching the entirety of the entirety of the camp. The practices failed to be challenging or a learning experience in anyway, this by far was my most demotivating feature of the camp as I knew I was wasting time and money towards a camp that ultimately taught me nothing. I would also like to note that one of the coaches, who's name I will remain hidden for privacy reasons, randomly would snap at us and at one time it got to the point where he was yelling at campers for worrying about a mess he made and seemed to pay no attention to. Over all my experience at this camp was awful and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody except a parent who is looking to punish there child. read more

My sons continue to do Purler. The practices can be boring because of the repetition. However, so fielding a thousand ground balls or rehearsing the same song over and over. Greatness comes with repetition, not flash. Odell Beckham said accredited his circus catches to practicing them with brothers and trying to top each other. If you fail to get anything from a practice that is your failure. Own it. I know Nick cannot be at every practice, everyday, at every place, at every moment. We have worked with all his coaches, most were Division I wrestlers. They are running a system based on repetition and focusing on the core college moves. It may seem basic but that is what wins. Single legs and double legs may seem boring but they are the bread and butter. What most kids and some parents do not realize, it is about trying to be perfect in position at all times through the shot and transitions. Many just look at it as a basic move and then get beat over and over again, because it was boring and they did not work and focus in practice. I made this follow up post because, I want people to know what it is about and not just the ax grinders and more selfishly because, I do not want the pouters coming and wasting my kids time.
