Our little one has been attending Chinese school for a few months and it's been a great experience so far. The main teachers we have are Teacher Rosie and Teacher Mei Mei. - Rosie is very organized. When we were initially learning about the school, she was very responsive to emails, answering questions, getting our first trial date set up, all our paperwork and tuition. Now that we are attending the school, she is equally responsive to text messages. - the school uses an app to keep you posted with pictures and what the kids did during the day. They keep this very up-to-date, which is really useful as well. Our family members love all the videos of our daughter, speaking in a different language. - I like how the class has a very age-appropriate structure, unlike some places that feel like more of a daycare. It is a mixed age class, but usually it starts out with some songs and learning vocabulary words, outdoor time, then art time. The classes are small enough to keep all the kids engaged and give every kid a chance to participate. read more

My daughter absolutely loves it here! We enrolled in the weekend class, and after every class she asks if she can come every day That pretty much says it all. Rosie is always responsive, and Teacher Meimei has such great energy and keeps the class engaging. My daughter is a naturally happy kid, and having a cheerful, encouraging Chinese teacher has made a huge difference in helping her develop an interest in learning Chinese. We love PM and the quality of bilingual education. Teacher Rosie goes above and beyond with the kids with field trips, camping excursions outside the classroom. During school hours they learn so much the curriculum is creative and fun. My 4 year old has been there for over 2 years and his mandarin vocabulary is way better than mine! The other teachers are great too, they have dance class and yoga class every week and I like that they use the playground app to keep parents informed on everything throughout the day. Purple Magpie is incredible! Teacher Rosie is a wonderful human and educator - she is so talented with children and you immediately feel her nurturing vibe when you meet her. We've been part of this Mandarin immersion preschool community for a while now and can't say enough good things! Our 4-year-old has been attending the weekend 3-hour classes for the past year, and his older brother also attended two years ago--so this program has been a part of our family's journey for a while. Purple Magpie Mandarin is a true gem. We were looking for a weekend Chinese school and it's been challenging to find one on the Westside. Every day my son would ask me if it's Chinese school day, it makes me incredibly happy to see him run into school and not even say goodbye at drop offs. When I first enrolled him, I was very concerned at his ability to speak chinese...he wasn't able to get the pronunciation correct and I wasn't sure that once a week would help him. Needless to say, I'm blown away at how fast they learn. It would be awesome if there is a curriculum for weekends we can follow so we know ahead of time what is being taught, but Rosie always lets me know what they learned when I pick him up. That way I can practice with him at home so that he can retain the information. The Director Rosie, is hands down the best. You can tell how much she loves the school because she really invests in it. My son comes home with the coolest art and crafts every week. She is incredibly patient, kind and compassionate. My child has been going to Purple Magpie for nearly two years now and we have loved it the entire time we have been going. Teacher Rosie has made the experience so fun for our child. Everyday they have so much fun playing games, making artwork, and making friends. Every day Teacher Rosie provides us feedback, pictures, and video of our child's progress with mandarin. By going to Purple Magpie, our trips to China have been much more comfortable, fun, and engaging. This year, our child has also successfully transitioned to a dual immersion mandarin elementary school. My soon to be 3 year old daughter has attended Purple Magpie for just over a month now, and so far we are very pleased with the school. Teacher and founder of the school, Xiqian (also goes by teacher Rosie), is so pleasant to deal with. She radiates kindness, and it's also clear that she has a lot of knowledge in how to work with kids in a respectful and productive way. She is very good with the children, and give them a lot of love and patience. I've seen her comforting a crying child, and it was as though it was her own. It was very sweet, and made me feel so much more comfortable leaving my daughter in her care. From the second week there, my daughter was completely fine with drop offs. This is because she was already comfortable at the school and knew she would be taken good care of and have a fun time. The school provides a good balance of fun and learning. Several times a week I've seen them have dance classes or yoga sessions, and they also do arts and crafts, cooking, as well as other learning activities. There's also that much needed room for play, which is so powerful for learning in the toddler years. There's a bug back yard where the kids are able to go crazy and fulfill their needs for physical activity. I think my daughter is learning so much both socially, emotionally, and cognitively at this school. I love that it's not only a language immersion school, there's also cultural immersion. This is key for kids growing up in a global world and in a city with such diversity that being able to understand different cultures is crucial. I feel we've been welcomed with open arms to the school as a family with no Chinese background (I'm European). We do not speak any Mandarin at home and our daughter did not have much prior exposure to the language, but this has not been an issue at all. I was very surprised when our daughter started singing songs in Chinese on our drive home from school after just a couple of weeks. It's amazing how quickly babies and toddlers pick up languages. I also appreciate that this school offers a lot of additional learning opportunities, such as weekend classes and after-school program for elementary school children. It means we can continue to send our children here for many years, even beyond their preschool years. They also offer part time, which many other local preschools do not. Purple magpie offers a very nurturing, fun, and educational environment for our daughter. We love that it's a small school with kids of various ages. It's healthy for kids to learn to interact with kids of different ages than themselves. We can't wait to our youngest is old enough to attend as well. Most preschools or daycares would separate them because they are 2 years apart. At purple magpie they will be able to spend their day together, which in an of itself is so valuable to us. The hot lunches provided at the school also saves so much time in the morning from having to prepare a lunchbox. I'll continue to edit my review as we gain more experience at this school, but so far it's absolutely perfect. My son has attended purple magpie for almost 1 month. Every day when we are in the car on the way back, I always ask "do you want to come and see teacher Rosie tomorrow", the answer is also "yes!" They have tons of different fun, creative and educational activities. And every week they have a theme to relate those activities, it can be an animal, some kind of flower etc. My son not only has a lot of fun there but also learns a lot! Were really happy we found Purple Magpie Mandarin. Teacher Rosie is really awesome! Our daughter has been attending for a few months. We get a ton of photos throughout the day of her doing lots of activities, always with a huge smile on her face. She has been learning Mandarin as well, and says new words each day. The facility is very clean and organized. Our daughter only cried for the first couple of days when I dropped her off, but now she lights up when I tell her "we're going to see teacher Rosie." We love Purple Magpie Mandarin! My son has been enrolled in three different Mandarin immersion daycares in LA Westside (including WorldSpeak and Stratford West LA). We've definitely had the best experience with Purple Magpie Mandarin. We sent our son to both the weekend Mandarin program, and the weekday family care when he was 3-4 years old. He started at the Sunday afternoon Mandarin classes with Teacher Rosie, Teacher Ma and Teacher Wu. All are awesome. We had our newborn and mostly needed a weekend daycare. The teachers were able to meet individual child's need. In addition to learning with a small group of friends, the teachers also help with my son's extra reading material. They are extremely good at getting the kids engaged and motivated. My son can finish reading out loud the same material with 2x speed compared to when he does that at home, because he loves his teachers and wants to impress them:). He was able to review reading all the passages from Grade 1 and 2 textbooks currently used in China with the teachers over ~30 Sunday afternoons. Compared to most bilingual preschools in west LA, where the target audience is mostly kids of 2+nd generation Chinese Americans where the whole classes take turns to learn how to say "grandpa" in Chinese, or typical Chinese after schools that requires a good amount of hand-writing and more suitable to school-aged kids, this is the only school that we found helpful in terms of tailoring to each kid's language level and need, thanks to the teachers' dedication. In addition to the formal learning, my son enjoyed making all kinds of traditional Chinese food/snacks and art (that includes mooncakes that hardly any Chinese parents can make nowadays). I love that my kid is not only learning but more importantly, gets to spend time with native Chinese teachers who embrace all the little joys in life and culture. I found him more confident as a praise coming from teachers that share the same race, culture and ethnicity is worth 1000s. We were particularly thankful for the weekday daycare my son was temporarily enrolled (for ~ a month) after withdrawing from an undesirable Mandarin Immersion Preschool, and was waiting for a spot back to his old daycare close to where I work. If it weren't for the long commute, we'd have kept him in Teacher Rosie's family care till school age. The teachers were so loving and nurturing. The kids were so friendly. The lunch was so yummy. He was the youngest in the weekend class, and the oldest in the weekday daycare, he had so much fun either way. I think the teachers' own cheerful spirits, love of life and learning and all kinds of good characters have infected our kid. For educators, who they are, how they love and what they do probably all matter more than what they teach. That's the quality of care we were looking for. Fun fact: for the time my son was with Purple Magpie Mandarin, he considered going to study Chinese there as a weekly reward to his Chinese learning time with me. My kiddo has been at Purple Magpie for over half a year. Overall, my partner and I have loved our experience with Rosie (the owner/director) and her staff. A few things we really like: 1) Rosie and the other teachers are all wonderful in how they teach, nurture, and interact with our daughter. They engage actively and are all sweet and enthusiastic, creating a very positive and fun learning environment. We see how happy and comfortable our kiddo is in the space and with the teachers. 2) There is a fresh, hot lunch served every day. It's healthy and what I love is that there is a mix of different foods offered (ex: rice, noodles/pasta, different veggies, meat/tofu/salmon) each day. Honestly, it smells amazing during drop-offs in the morning! They also have different types of fruit and snacks ... some of which are tied to a cultural holiday or lesson (ex: zong zi for the dragon boat festival)... which is awesome. I love that my daughter is able to enjoy different meals regularly. 3) There is a wonderfully rich curriculum. It is filled with so much creativity and fun -- I appreciate the mix of hands-on activities, use of imagination, teacher-led reading, circle time, as well as outdoor play time (with shade) among other activities. Rosie is an excellent educator and has impacted my child's life for the future. We Love Purple Magpie Mandarin!! She also cooks hot fresh food for lunch daily! We never sent our daughter to school with food and we knew that she was getting a well-balanced meal with Rosie + snacks throughout the day. For me, it's really important that my child feels safe and Rosie's nurturing personality accomplished that. She gives children a school experience that is really enjoyable. I truly believe that my child thrives when she is in an environment which gives her a sense of security, Rosie was able to teach my child various subjects and concepts, such as the continents, body parts, numbers, colors, seasons, and career fields. My two year and a half year old would share with me what she had learned from school. Here is an example: Mommy, I eat food in my mouth and then it's in my stomach and it's in my intestines and then I poo. Like omg! You are right! Good job!!! Very good!!! That's the kind of education you are getting at Purple Magpie. She can say the word 'intestines' in Mandarin (amazing). Then the next couple of weeks she told me.. "Mommy, I have lungs and they are located and she pointed to her body in the correct space and then pointed to where mine would be and said they are for breathing." She also told me..Look mommy (as she pointed to her head) and said, "I have a brain in here. I am smart. Mommy is smart. Daddy is smart. Teacher Rosie is smart and then named all the kids in her schools name and said they were smart!" I love how inclusive Purple Magpie is in their way of teaching. My child knows everyones name and tells me about each kiddo. I love Rosie's teaching style, education, and love. My child is well-rounded and adaptable for elementary school. Rosie is not only an educator but also a mentor, she is guiding their young minds to understand the purpose of school and fostering a safe learning environment. Teacher Rosie is very kind and talented in terms of curriculum design - our son learned so much not only the language skill but also art creation, taking care of younger kids and playing with peers.
