Well... we moved to our current house because we wanted our kids to grow up in Puyallup Schools. Our oldest son and daughter went to Brouillet Elementary. Our experience started off strong as we had some really good teachers but after a new principle took over many of them jumped ship. After a very disappointing and ridiculous approach to the pandemic, we left for private school. We felt that after nearly suffocating our kids for year and a half, we were DONE. Enduring the combination of far left progressive politics infused in the classroom and oblivious approach to child development, it was apparent that, to the administration, our kids were seen as $ signs and political statements, not as people. As far as teachers, there are some VERY good people who work in this district. We have many friends who teach in district and are AMAZING in spite of their environment and the BS they put up with. Now, I would give the teachers overall a 3 star because our experience was so bipolar. One year our son had a really great teacher, who challenged him, held him accountable and pushed him to grow. The next his teacher stopped showing up after the first week. Literally no showed, leaving the whole class in disarray. Ultimately, we felt that the "luck of the draw" approach was absurd, and we subsequently left. Private school is a major sacrifice but far better, very enriching with HIGH expectations for personal responsibility. We will never go back to Puyallup Schools. read more

I'm a student apart of the Teaching Careers class. currently we are on a field trip to Central Washington University and before we were promised a charter bus. a large amount of the classmates got excited and brought all sorts of things for the charter bus (I've been on one before so I knew what to prepare), but when students arrived for the trip, instead there was a regular ugly yellow bus. as many of students know, the buses are so uncomfortable to sit in, heating sucks, and there is little leg room. I was hoping this could have been a bus for a sports team needing to go someplace early, but instead we are given this. I am honestly disappointed in both school district and whoever sets up charter buses. You promised us a charter bus, we deserve that charter bus. Thank you. read more

We love the Puyallup School District! I have 4 "children" (the oldest are now adults) who have all gone through the Puyallup school system. In addition, my 3 siblings and I are also products of the district. My family has been in this district for many years and I could not imagine having my children educated in another district. I myself work in education and have seen many neighboring districts as an employee and am very proud to call Puyallup home to my own children. The students in the Puyallup School District are pushed to the highest achievement. The graduation rate is very high (over 90% in their "traditional" high schools) and many of those students go on to college following high school. I do feel that my voice is heard in Puyallup. As they try to figure out how to fit all their growing population into their existing schools while in the process of building new ones, like many school districts, they are forced to look at boundary lines and grade level shifts and things like that. A few years back. They had to make the decision to move many of the districts 6th graders to the Jr. High Schools (Puyallup had traditionally had a Jr. high model holding 7th - 9th graders. The High Schools held 10th - 12th). Though many of the surrounding districts have a Middle School model that holds 6th - 8th graders, many parents in Puyallup really liked the idea of keeping their 6th graders in the Elementary Schools one more year instead of moving them forward to the Jr. High where they would be exposed to the older teenage influences a year earlier. I suppose we may have been hoping to hold on to their youth and "innocence". The Puyallup School District worked with the parents and came up with a system which is currently in place where some of the schools were allowed to keep their 6th graders in the Elementary. The employees are incredible! Sure there are some that are still learning the ropes or possibly overwhelmed with responsibilities, but you would find that anywhere! To me, that is a sign of a healthy environment. There is not a high turnover rate. Most of the teachers in the district stick around providing continuity and consistency for their students. And those veteran teachers (of which there are many), take the new ones who are learning the ropes under their wings and you see a large amount of collaboration among the staff. The reason they may seem overwhelmed at times is because people are aware of how amazing the district is and there is a huge amount of growth because so many people want their children to be in a school system that will nurture them and help them learn to be successful! Another amazing thing about the Puyallup District is the connection between staff and family! Many schools in Puyallup hold a large number of ways for the families to get involved. Now, for us working parents it is not always easy. However, there are so many different opportunities with even the fun spirit activities - the Barbecues, Bingo Nights, Skate Nights, Dinners, as well as the amazing performances put on by the students. The schools are very good about keeping the families involved in their children's education and, at times, I have found that we have so many families involved that we run out of seats for them all. You find a space to sit on the floor along the wall or you stand. There are so many opportunities to be involved and everybody enjoys being there! AND, at our home school, the most amazing thing is that after each of these events the families all help to clean up their spaces and put their chairs away before leaving. It seams like such a silly little thing, but it is huge when you are trying to teach your child about community, responsibility, and everyone working together. It is such a wonderful community for our children! I can not say enough amazing things about this district. It may not be perfect. It may have it's faults. But they are doing some amazing things! I am proud to be part of the Puyallup School District and could not think of anywhere else I would want my children to be educated. read more

The Puyallup School District is set up for a stay-at-home parent. They have a late start at the school on Mondays, the school does not start until 9:50. A normal day still begins later than any school I have ever dealt with, 8:40. Making it to work on time is impossible. Instead I have to pay the very high before school program prices. In addition, their band program for elementary school is at the middle school and there is no transportation to that from their other school, instead, they must be dropped off. Again, making it impossible for a working parent to get their children to the program in time. In addition, they do not provide transportation from our home as we are in what is considered to be walking distance. In order for my 10 year old to attend these programs, they want her to walk almost a full mile and would need to cross the railroad tracks in downtown Puyallup. Due to being so close to the railroad tracks there is a high population of homeless and drug users. This is very frustrating as in order to keep your child safe you must take time off from work daily just to get them to and from school. **If you can stay out of the Puyallup School District, I would. read more

The Puyallup School District is an exceptional public district for students at all levels. Great grad rates, and many programs for college and career bound students. Wonderful music, arts and athletics at Junior High and High Schools. The schools look great and several new schools are being built. The district is bringing many new options for parents with regard to pre-school and kindergarten. Puyallup is a great community and known for the quality of the schools. read more

The Puyallup School District (often referred to as PSD) is a great school system serving Puyallup and the surrounding areas! It seems that the teachers and administrators really care about their students and if really respect that. Most of the campuses are either brand-new, or newly remodeled so you the schools always look for sleek and modern :) I like their implementation of new technology like using iPads and laptops and electronic reader boards in the educational process. I have been in the school district all my life.i went to zeiger 1-6th grade then Jr high at ballou.now I'm at rogers high.they have great administration and the food is good after you get out of elementary.all in all its great. read more

I have had mixed experiences with the PSD. Kudos to several of the teachers my children have had, to the principal and counselor Mrs. Buck at Aylen Jr. High, the athletic director at PHS, the secretaries at W.R.. I appreciate the cleanliness of the schools as well. On the other hand, as a client I do not feel that the PSD values parent input. Getting a hold of teachers is hit and miss depending on the teacher. I would like for there to be a policy of returning parent correspondence within one business day of contact. Classes are over-sized and my children have suffered because of this. Teaching specialists are moved around the district and there is often no continuity from year to year. Office staff seems overwhelmed with their workload and things have to be done a specific way. There is often no-one to direct you and help you when assistance is called for. Often the attitude is just - I'm sorry, go figure it out yourself. I was told there was no program for young children only to find out years later that such programs do exist. As with most institutions, things are cut and dried with no creativity in regards to student ability. It seems that if a student can not roll with how things are then it is up to the parents to try to fill in the gaps. Many of the systems have not changed since I was a student many years ago. Finally, the website - source of all information is sorely lacking. It loads slowly and the personnel are not committed to keeping it updated. Some teachers and coaches are stellar, but others are not. It tends to be a frustrating experience rather than useful and helpful. Overall, I find that the district often does not meet student needs, care about serving clients or parent concerns, and is slow at making progressive changes. read more
