The Theatre/Music/Dance departments have been excellent two years in, and Tom Smith is an outstanding department chair and advisor. Finally the students are just exceptionally thoughtful and conscientious. Students and parents will love the PLU experience. I love PLU! Always have, always will. The students here are the nicest I've ever met. Like it just feels like they care and want you to be there. Now this might sound strange but they actually hold the doors open for you, which is a small thing but it has a really big impact. They are great community members and always there to help their students. During the school years they partner up with the local community in many different ways. Some clubs will go out and volunteer, others will put on performances for elementary schools. There are a couple students who volunteer at the local middle school as well. I believe the static is that 100% of varsity athletes volunteer! That's amazing!! Great place to be. All are welcome. Although they are a Lutheran University, all are welcome. Only 17% of student actually identify themselves as Lutherans. They also have great support for marginalized groups. The professors are amazing! They work great with students and actually know your name in class. My professor actually offered me a job one time because she saw my hard work in class and had a perfect job for me. Also PLU is very well know for their study abroad experiences. I know that played a huge factor when looking at colleges. I actually went to Australia in my time here. PLU is a great location for conferences. They have huge conference rooms that people can rent out. Also their food and dining is amazing. Whether it's for a special occasion or just their normal meal times I really enjoy the food. The chicken strips are bomb. The food definitely played a part in whether I wanted to come here or not. I mean, I would be eating this food for four years, I have to like it. PLU is here to support you! That's what their mission statement is all about. Overall the perfect place for me. I graduated from PLU's Marriage and Family Therapy program which teaches psychotherapy through a systemically inclusive lens. The professors I had the privilege of studying under were wonderful, brilliant, and genuine. For me, the school gets a huge bonus for being COAMFT accredited (you're guaranteed about half your licensure hours upon gradution) and having their own therapy clinic to intern at! I am a 1982 graduate from the PLU School of Business and my son is a current student. I paid every penny by myself working full time through the school years and graduating on time. Admittedly, I was pretty "frosted" about the cost of college in the US. As a parent paying for my son I still get frosted by it. The price is staggering. But I can tell you without exception that attending PLU put me leaps and bounds ahead of people that graduated from a large state school. Part of it was the related work experience over the 4 years. Part of it was an average class size of 20 or less. Part of it was the actual relationship you can have with professors and staff because of the intimacy of the small campus. I cannot compare qualitative class content issues as I did not attend a state school. By way of example, I can tell you I would have likely not finished my degree had I attended a major university where some class sizes are in the hundreds. Why? Because I new my PLU Professor's and they knew me. I was not the best student but I had a voracious appetite to learn. They knew I was pulling a full load and working full time. At one point in my senior year I was flat out of money and thought I was done. A Finance Professor by the name of Stuart Bancroft found out. He took me to the business office and introduced me to some of the staff. He explained the situation and they arranged for the money I needed to finish the final semester. Additionally, I had interviews waiting for me prior to graduation because PLU is highly regarded and because I took the time to build relationships with the PLU staff. Is it expensive? Absolutely. And worth every penny if you drive yourself toward excellence and hold yourself responsible. I am deeply appreciative of what my education at PLU has afforded me throughout my adult life. THANKS to all that work there! Regarding the negative review from the Canadian university student... I appreciate your perspective and feel your pain. Your education in Canada was subsidized by the Canadian government. That is not PLU's issue. It is the policy of the American government to subsidize based on financial need as a form of redistribution of wealth, not a students ability. You are comparing apples and maple syrup. Wow, what to say about PLU. I graduated in '09 with a B.A. in Communication with an emphasis in conflict management and peace building. The communication department is hit or miss depending on which advisor and focus you want to do. I'm realizing as I'm writing this that reviewing a whole university is very difficult. I think I'm going to do bullet points. Pros: -You'll make the best friends of your life. PLU makes it really easy to become connected with other people and be involved on campus so unless you hate people, you'll love that about it. -There are opportunities to get involved no matter what your interests are. -The financial aid packages are generally good and they'll work with you pretty well to find solutions to gaps in funding. -There are several professors who are so educated and experienced about their topic that it'll blow you away. -The campus is gorgeous. -It has a great reputation, especially in the west coast, which looks good on a resume. -Even though it's affiliated with the ELCA, you wont feel uncomfortable if you're not Lutheran because most people aren't. Cons: -It's expensive, even after financial aid. Yes I did say they would work with you but it's still expensive. -Like I said there are great professors, but there are also some that should have been let go years ago and are completely useless. -The administration. Oh, where to start, Just about anyone who has any connection to PLU will tell you that the administration and it's ways are archaic, frustrating and set in stone. Filing forms or asking questions is such a frustrating process and will take you forever and they'll be grumpy, even if it goes smoothly. *Note* this wont be the case if you are a prospective student. They will treat you like a God and be super friendly and helpful at that point. The snotty attitude doesn't start until you're actually enrolled. -The neighborhood around campus is, well, not great. There are some fun houses to live in but in general the streets are not safe. Myself and man of my friends had our cars broken into on several occasions and the university is always sending out reports of muggings and assaults near campus. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at PLU and I often think back on it fondly and wish I were still in college. Granted, most of those experiences I miss were out of class or off campus but in general I did have a really good experience. read more

I had to take 2 classes at PLU during summer a few years back to make up credits for classes I um...didn't do too well in, at my regular school (University of British Columbia). I was visiting my parents in the Tacoma area and they told me I had to take summer classes somewhere for sucking my 2nd semester of school. But the low rating given has nothing to do with the fact that my summer vacation was forced to be spent here. Biggest con is the price. On the website right now, it says summer session costs $605 per credit. If I recall correctly, both the classes I took were 4 credits, so I paid around $2420 for each class (or close to around that, I don't think the fluctuation a few years ago was out of that price range). I think that's crazy! I only pay $450 per class at UBC, and it's a school consistently ranked Top 40 in the world university rankings. If I was going to school full time, for $2420 per class, it'd be the same price of an Ivy League school without any of the prestige or name recognition. The campus is alright. It's in Spanaway, so there's typical suburban activities to do around like your typical US chain restaurants, and it's easy to get around if you have a car. There's a really nice rec center within 5 minutes of the school, and a couple dive bars. I wouldn't say it's a great suburb though, some people label Spanaway negatively, but I think it's alright. The look and size of the campus isn't amazing though. It's clean, very private, and has lots of stuff for sports (tennis, indoor pool, basketball). Their Student Center is nice, library is average. For the price, you could be attending a way cooler school with state of the art buildings and facilities. One of my classmates told me during the fall PLU gets way busier, and they have sports stuff going on. But it's a dry campus, and the people didn't strike me as the type that would be into throwing lots of campus parties. For half the price you could be going to a high ranked school, with more parties - so why wouldn't you? The two classes I took: Communication, Media & The World: This is the reason why I give PLU 2 stars and not 1. The class was tiny, it started with 7 people and ended with 5. I took this because UBC doesn't have Communication classes, so I found it interesting. The Professor gave a strong effort, I think he said he use to work for CNN. The class was easy, I got an A, which is a 90%something at this school. For the same effort, I would have gotten a 70-75% at UBC (a B- to a B). One of the nicest Professors I've met though, one of the positive things I'll remember about PLU. Biology, Introduction to Ecology: Within one of the couple classes, the Professor made a comment about how, "Certain animals can walk on water by manipulating molecules. So this proves that Jesus can walk on water." Thing made another comment in another class about how something completely unrelated to Creationism proved Creationism. I'm not joking, he said this stuff - in a biology class. I have nothing against Christianity at all. But he needs to keep his religious theories out of the biology classroom. We mostly did a lot of busy work like walked around in a grass field for hours, or count seeds (I wish I were joking but I'm not). The class was small, it was like taking a remedial high school science class. I wouldn't choose to go to PLU full time. There are much better options in every way around not only Washington, but the entire Westcoast. read more

My wife and I just attended a concert at PLU, School of Arts & Communications, Department of Music. Concert was called "Matthäuspassion" and suitable for the Christian celebration of Good Friday. We must say that we have attended a number of Christian Concerts, but this one surpasses all of them. The language of the singers for this concert was German and quite difficult, but they were assisted with English translation and the power of their songs was so well presented many in the audience (including myself) were moved to tears! Dates of Concert were March 22 & 23, 2016. We are impressed with this School and with the overall quality of the programs provided by PLU. Our intent is to participate when possible with attending such fine arts programs as the one just experienced and other functions that are open to the public. read more

Although pricey, but the experience was worth every penny. I went to Pierce for two years before I went to PLU so I could afford the education they provide. Being a transfer, the university made sure I felt comfortable and gave me resources to go to if I need help. Classes are small and the campus is beautiful. I was able to study abroad, be a part of LASR radio, make the Deans List and get the tools I need for my post graduation life. 6 months after I graduated, I truly miss it. I'm headed here in the fall to be a Communications major (with a concentration on Journalism) and I couldn't be more excited!! Today was my second real time on campus (every other time has been on a basis of fun, not planning) and I registered for my classes. The academic advisor that I was set up with sat with me for an hour and listened to my absolute every thought as I tried to balance everything in my life and set a final schedule for my first semester. In the end, we got it figured out and he was like, "Don't even worry to change your mind and call me later!" Even though I was super stressed, looking back at it now, I have full confidence that everything will be okay, even if I do change my mind in my minor. The campus itself is so beautiful too. It's got a very old history feel to it, and I love it. The surrounding area is kind of sketchy but PLU feels like it's in its own little world. Everybody on campus, including the student employees, are so nice too! I'm so excited to be a Lute! read more

Best known for it's sports games, including Spring Games for Special Olympians! The people there are nice, and so are the staff.

We have always had positive experiences from PLU!! My daughter has attended here for several years. From pre admission to the present, my daughter has had individual treatment, positive help, and many wonderful experiences. Their study abroad program was affordable and excellent! They have many options for financial aid, both merit and need based, which have helped our family tremendously. Their student welcoming weekend is great for students and families! I am also an employee of a nearby school district and PLU has offered many students there an opportunity to continue their education even if they can't afford all of it!
