After years of wearing startup T's and shorts, I left the startup scene and joined a corporation where there is an unspoken dress code and shorts are frowned upon. The new job came with a nice pay bump so I figured I'll dress nicer. I reached out to Katie when I was visiting New York and she was able to squeeze me into her schedule within a short notice. As someone who never really shopped, I really didn't know what to expect. Katie held my hand through the process and the whole experience blew me away. Before meeting Katie, I filled out a form that asked me who my role models were, who I thought looked really good in TVs and movies, and other personality questions so Katie could get a feel of the kind of personality I want my style to convey. I really wanted a Harvey Specter look. HA! When Katie and I met, I confessed all my physical insecurities to her. Specifically, I had short stubby legs and finding jeans had always been a problem. Some jeans make my legs short and others make my legs look fat. Fortunately, Katie listened without judgement and none of my shortcomings unfazed her. After about 20 minutes of chatting and getting to know each other, we started shopping and I had the best time of my life! Katie and I waltzed into Banana Republic and Katie immediately grabbed a handicapped fitting room (there were no handicapped person in the store). She asked me to try on some stuff and while I was putting them on, Katie disappeared and returned with a pile of jeans, pants, and shirts. In my past shopping experience, it usually takes me hours to find jeans that fit. So when everything Katie picked fits my body type, I became the happiest person in the world! I eagerly tried on everything Katie brought into the fitting room and we spent most of our time going through the styles and colors and finding the right combination that would make me look my best. By the time we were done, we had a huge clothing pile of maybes and definitely-nots. After Banana Republic, we shopped at Bloomingdales in the same process. I would spend all my time trying on clothes in the fitting room while Katie looks, gives feedback, and brings in more and more clothes. We looked at styles and picked the most flattering styles for my body. By the end of the shopping experience, I had a head to toe wardrobe combination for every occassion (formal, business, business casual, casual, and very casual). Complete wardrobe makeover! Its been a little more than a month since my shopping experience with Katie and I can honestly say Katie had changed my life for the better. I get complements on my new look and I became more confident. After looking my best every day, I started developing a sense of what looks good on me and what doesn't. GREAT taste and very efficient. I didn't know what to expect with my first stylist consultation, but Katie knocked my socks off. I was in dire need of a wardrobe overhaul and getting to be a bit more fashionable. She first came and gave a review of my current wardrobe to understand what I liked, why I liked it, what I hated, and what was just too old or poor taste and had to be donated. Katie really tried to understand what types of outfits I needed for going out, work, dates, and lounging around. Then she wrote down a list of what I seemed to be lacking and then we went shopping to get what I needed. A few other unexpected things that she helped with was recommending how to best keep clothes in good condition for a long time with proper hangers, storage, and care techniques. Then, the shopping experience was a breeze. She was sooo quick at finding good things. I had a date in about 2 hours after we got to the store, so we had somewhat limited time, but we didn't even seem to be in a rush. She did some fun things like get almost 30 pairs of shoes and try them all on to find the best. All the other guys buying shoes were certainly jealous that I had a personal stylist. We narrowed it down to a few pairs of shoes and sandals that I really liked. Then we proceeded to find some good shirts and try them on two. Katie certainly knows when something does and does not look good. Including if something that looks good just doesn't fit right. If I was shopping myself, I probably wouldn't have been as adventurous with some of the styles, but after getting them home, I realized that I do really like her taste and it is good to not be so conservative. And, she helped find really good deals. After years of watching me stare at my closet for hours, trying to find an outfit, or watching me run to buy a cheap blouse every time we had to go out, my husband suggested that I hire a stylist. So I did some research and contacted Katie. I'll be honest: I thought she would come over, tell me to toss some sweaters, ask me to buy a new pair of jeans, and then create some outfits. I did not expect a completely life-altering experience, which is exactly what happened. Prepare for this. Katie asked me to do a lot of homework before she came. I had tear out looks that I liked from magazines, complete a questionnaire about my style preferences, lifestyle, etc. And then I had to put out ALL of my clothes. When she came over, we went through the looks to establish a style I was going for (chic-modern), and then we went to work. Basically, for the next three hours I tried on EVERY piece of clothing that I owned and she took detailed notes. This was exhausting and mildly traumatic: it was like watching parts of your life go by. Although I frequently clean out my closet, I cannot believe how much stuff she got rid of: basically, if it did not contribute to the look I was going for, it was gone. But as terrifying as this may sound, the clothes left in my closet MADE SENSE: they all fit together. No random peasant blouses or Navajo-inspired shorts (or whatever trendy buys I made over the years to create some kind of look). In a very nice way, Katie suggested that I should not shop alone. She was right. So we met later at Bloomingdales and I DID NOT LEAVE the change room. In 5 minutes, I had 5 pairs of pants that fit me perfectly. I had to ask five times if we were in a room with a "skinny mirror," they looked so good. The came the tops, and sweaters, and all sorts of other things. She was conscious about price, and I came out with an incredible number of high-quality items. Finally: outfit creation. Katie came over and made about 36 outfits for me, which she photographed and compiled in a look-book. I use this at least 4 times per week, and I also create my own outfits now. As a result, I have not shopped in months. And I never leave the house feeling like I am dressed in an odd combination of clothes from grad school, trendy pieces from H&M, and a randomly expensive handbag. Another unexpected outcome is that the experience got me over a lot of body image issues, probably because I am not trying to fit myself into trends good only for 5'10 models. I am so impressed with Katie. Katie is a fantastic fashion stylist. I don't enjoy shopping BUT I really want to look good and spend the smallest amount possible (quite a quandary). Thank god for Q the Stylist. Here's what Katie does that's so amazing: she figures out what you really need to look and feel goo (even if you don't know it yet) and helps u get it quick and cheap. I've now used her for two major wardrobe refreshes...they go a little something like this. Katie and I go thru everything in my closet and drawers and we identify the gaps in my existing wardrobe (and we clear out all the stuff that I should give away). Then we head off to a discount designer type store to get 80% of the stuff I needed. I really need her for this step in the process because I don't have the patience or desire to shop at big stores like this, but this is where to find great deals on good gear (I justify paying her because she saves me so much money at this step). She picks everything (and I pick some stuff too), then I try it all on and we both have veto rights...I don't buy anything I don't like no matter how "in" something might be. Any remaining pieces we couldn't find after the main shopping trip, Katie can take you to other stores or, what she usually does for me, email me ideas/places to checkout or stuff online to find that piece I'm still missing. Overall great experience, I'll continue to use her. She's killer at follow-up (gives me advice over email on watches and glasses, etc) and she goes the extra mile to make sure you're happy. I've worked with a few SF stylists and I have to say that Katie tops them all. She's wonderful to work with! She asks questions - a lot of them - and that's a very good thing. How else can she get to know your likes and dislikes. She listens and takes notes and suddenly you're off and running! I love that she has a system she follows to make shopping quick and easy. For example, she took me Nordstrom Rack (a place that is overwhelming to me) but shopping there for shoes with Katie was a breeze. We've been on two shopping trips so far and I can already see a new fabulous wardrobe emerging from my closet that held practically nothing.
