When they needed to ask me something it was discreet and quick. I didn't have to worry about incidentals. I dropped off the picture boards (which they supplied) and other items I wanted displayed (pictures in frames, lions jacket, guitar, etc.). They took care of displaying these items around the room. When the day was done they didn't rush me - not once! The next day at the church they again went into action without me having to worry about a thing. They knew what the church permitted and how everything was to happen. We had military honors which they made sure of. Again, I didn't have to organize one thing! I tried to give them a "tip" at the end. They wouldn't hear of it. He politely said no and said it was his pleasure. I would highly recommend them!!

She said 'We have to dispose of child eventually" When my disabled child passed the first agreement was half the money now and I would get my child. The next day she took over and said that contract was void. She kept him for 18 days and cremated him without my permission and held the death certificate. Had I seen it I would have known he didn't pass from natural causes for the death certificate had the cause as cerebral palsy and epilepsy he had neither. She did no obituary and called like a collection agency instead of helping me through. She has no licence and shouldn't have been involved. If the first contract wasn't voided by her there wouldn't have been a problem. I knew he needed an autopsy and then she had him cremated immediately after and tried getting me to sign it. Also he wasn't embalmed for 18 days! If you have no insurance or want to be harassed and abused daily wanting "her money" I found others this happened to, many others. Read Hollie Kirchoffs review. I attended a service there only to have it RUINED by the lack of respect. When we asked NUMEROUS times to have them quiet down, the staff seemed irritated that we dared ask... well... I was to the point of wanting to barge into the other room and telling them to "shut the hell up"... NOT how I wanted to feel at my cousin's funeral. SO if you want to have PEACE & QUIET to grieve, to say goodbye... then this is not the funeral home for you. Their rooms are not soundproof and you will be left feeling aggravated and upset. And they ask for their programs back. You know, just take your loss and turn it into little barbs. So, yeah, my mom died unexpectedly in August and I haven't felt much like writing on here since. The future reviews collection stacks up but I planned to make Kaul next and every time I think about it I'm like nah, later. They did a pretty good job. Mom looked alright in the casket with birds on it they had. She had a bit of a frown, like she was disappointed she's dead. We all were. It was a tough time. Jason met with us for over 3 hours, going over particulars. He was pleasant enough. I could tell he meets with the aggrieved all the time. He did make multiple typos in the obituary but we ironed it all out together eventually. The space was what you'd expect for a visitation, at least akin to previous wakes I'd been to. The adjoining kitchen was nice and the food was basic but nourishing and plentiful. We had leftovers for awhile. Kaul made a nice book from the digitized photos we provided for a slideshow, mailed to my dad. And I was able to make a playlist for the visitation on Spotify but it took a good ten minutes for them to figure out how to get their iPad hooked up to the sound system and a bit longer to get the volume at an appropriate level. Not the hugest deal but at times like that little stressors get magnified. I had this grief brain fog which I learned is a thing. All in all, I do think we sent my mom off in style, as painful as it was. It was my first time losing a parent and this is my first time reviewing a funeral home. I can't speak to the financial aspect as my dad footed the bill but there were no major wrinkles in the visitation. Ample room for flowers and photo boards and for family and friends to visit.

When my grandma passed, we of course went with Kauls. From the first meeting to the last, it was a struggle this time. And that is unfortunate because it is such an emotional time. My grandma is a WWII Marine and the director we were assigned had no clue what to do. She told us a ton of faulse information.. like we could not have the Marines at her service because it was on the weekend and they would not come. I had to take it upon myself, during a time of grieving, to arrange and reach out to the military and do the arrangements on my own. The military were fantastic and even scolded the funeral home. When the Marines arrived, they were appalled to see that Kauls had folded the flag wrong and displayed it incorrectly. During such an emotional time you would think a funeral home would offer support.

As hard as it may seem to believe to some people, there are some cemeteries that are sub-par…read more Worse than that, they are just downright disgusting. Luckily, for a select few of my family members that have passed, the Mt. Olivet Cemetery is NOT one of those places. Admittedly, I hadn't been back to this location in probably 8 years. I don't have many family members buried there, and those who are buried there are members I was not as close to (either because they passed when I was young or before I was born, or because we were not close family members). Either way, I never remembered much about going out to this location. Maybe it's because I'm older now, or maybe it's because my older family members are starting their (hopefully) slow decent from the prime of their lives, but this is the first time I've ever truly paid attention to how this cemetery looks. Now, I was only there for about 45 minutes, but I think it was long enough to truly take in the location. First off, the grass was green and well kept, and the crypts were not dusty or dirty. Again, you may think that goes without saying, but unfortunately that is not always the case. The pavement, at least the roads I traveled, were free from potholes and graffiti as well. Lots of people I spoke with assumed that it would be a very bad cemetery due to the location in Detroit, but I did not find this to be the case. If you don't mind the hike, depending, of course, where you live in proximity to the cemetery, I think it's about as good as you can get in the Metro-Detroit area to have your final resting place - but let's hope that, for all of you reading this, that date is far away in the future.
