The staff is universally helpful, playful, friendly and caring. The facilities and greens are now well-cared-for, and one can tell that staff takes pride in their work. This can be felt in groundskeepers, to barkeeps, to starters and marshals and cart girls, to the folks in the pro shop.

Here's the weird thing: I pull into the parking lot at 0700 and I'm getting passed in the lot by grandpa's in their Lincoln town cars and Camrys. They're doing 50 mph in the big parking lot racing for spaces. These old guys jump out of their vehicles before their car comes to a complete stop, they hop out, and in one fluid motion they lace up their sketcher extra wide spikeless, open their clic gear, toss their ping cart bag full of metal woods and wedges with iron covers on the cart and grimly hobble as fast as their reconstructed knees will take them into the proshop to be first off the tee box. It was the angstyest golf scene I've ever seen. But here's the thing. It's well run, the pro shop flows people thru, the starter pairs them up quick and the pace of play on a Friday morning at this high round count track was okay. 18 holes in 4hrs...not bad. Greens rolled true but look like they're recovering. Fairways okay, bunkers for sure need more sand and less clay but hey, it ain't Augusta. For sure worth a round but I might have caught it on a good day as it has the high potential to be a 6 hr round and if the staff changes I can see how you can hate the place...so go soon before anything changes!

I've played here twice in the last week and on both occasions really enjoyed my time out there…read more The course's greens were recently punched (*it's a summer time thing that has to be done in the desert) and ironically, after I figured out that the ball was not going to move very much because it was jumping straight ahead the whole way to the hole (instead of being affected by the slope and lean of the blades of grass) I started to drop some long putts. In addition to Arizona National being both, a really nice golf course (that will beat you down and keep you on your knees if you let it), and that it sits in a location that truly amazing, the staff that works here is exceptional. The cart girl who brought us beverages in the desert heat was exceptionally pleasant and caring, as was the young man who took my food order when I stayed behind and grabbed a post-round lunch. He too was also super friendly and courteous...and patiently listened as I shared a couple boring golf stories. I also really enjoyed the interactions that I had with the starter, and the "customer support" guy who sets your clubs up in the cart, and the pro shop guy were all very enjoyable and made me feel welcomed and appreciated. I will close by sharing that I did have an off-putting experience (where the pro-shop guy was openly rude to me for no apparent reason). This was two years ago and I had vowed to avoid the course... and actually had not played there since. I am glad that my golf buddies invited me to play there last week as the experiences were really good--in every way that a round of golf could be.

Yesterday I had the House Salad, full of the usual vegetable suspects, a hardboiled egg, several slices of bacon, and a sliced chicken breast, hot off the grill and super tender. The default dressing is ranch but I love the chef's Caesar, so opted for that. I was almost able to finish the salad and it was delicious. The restaurant and golf course are semiprivate so open to the public. Wednesday and Friday nights are dinner specials and holidays have special menus. Thanksgiving was fabulous (no cooking or cleanup for me!) and a teaser was just put out for St. Patrick's Day.

It is a hallowed land, free of sorrowful ball-marks and lowly divots. A place where a golfer with true-heart can be blessed and his spirit filled. Can I get an Aye-Maaaaan!!? For lo and behold... it has been said about El Rio, that the cart paths of the righteous man shall be beset on all sides by inequities of the lazy groundskeepers and tyranny of unkempt cart girls. But I'm here to tell you, there's something else. A world of never ending happiness. You can always see the flag pins...day... or night. And I shall strike thee down with furious vengeance and great anger, those that attempt to poison and destroy the reputation of my brothers and sisters who walk in righteousness upon these putting greens at El Rio. Blessed is he who swings a 7 iron through these valleys that were once thought dark and not well maintained. That is blasphemy. For he who chooses to play here is truly a low score keeper and the finder of lost golf balls. Amen. *Guess I better not quit my day job, as that was a terrible sermon upon the Yelp. But El Rio is actually a pretty good place to play. The staff there is so welcoming, the playing conditions are above par, (you knew there was gonna be a golf pun tossed in somewhere!), and I always sense a feeling of community and camaraderie when I choose to play here. We have scheduled another round next Tuesday with the purchase of a golf pass. The course was watered and the fairways were green. I would rate it a 6/10 for difficulty. At our age we are looking to enjoy golf not to competitively score our lowest scoring round. Many of the par 4's can be reached in regulation. We had a nice experience and that is why we are returning. The golf pass reduces the cost from $70+ to $55. That is a good savings. Plenty of parking. Nice inside restaurant to get a bite to eat or a drink. Water throughout the course. It is hot now in the afternoons in Tucson. Suggest a morning tee time. Enjoy your round.

All staffs here (pro shop, starters , OSP) are all very friendly and professional. Each cart comes with two bottles of water. There are 3 nine holes; Palmer, Gambler and Pioneer. Our group's favorite courses are Palmer and Gambler. Palmer: this is not the typical easy pleasy resort course. It is super challenging / tough, a very target golf. Definitely not for beginners, but extremely satisfy after the round. Bathroom (Palmer): clean because it is literally a JW facility. But it requires a little walk through the pool area. Gambler: not as tough as Palmer but still quite challenging and fun. Bathroom (Gambler): I think it was portable. Sad since it is such a fancy facility. Pioneer: this is the friendliest 9 out of the three courses and appears to be the busiest too. Bathroom (Pioneer): don't remember. Playing off of lush grass always makes for a nice day of golf as it is easier to hit from. The course is pretty challenging for me, as any time I need to carry over water, or in this case, desert it gets in my head and I tend to not hit well.
